A lot of great musicians started by learning by ear. Eddie van Halen, for example. He started by playing piano when he was young and was great at it, but didn't learn to read music even when taking music lessons. His teacher was teaching it with music notation, but Eddie played all of the pieces by ear anyway. Luke combs Before I met Luke, I had already won an Emmy and worked with artists. Trace Adkins, Michael Ray, Cole Swindell, Craig Campbell, Craig, Morgan, lonestar Randy Houser. I Produced and engineered and Mixed and Vocal coaching for the first three songs that Luke ever recorded in his life Including the song that they added Upchurch to Can I get an outlaw That I produced for Luke I hired Musicians that ended up being on his number one smash Hurricane. He hadn’t recorded any songs “ever” I had modest gear that I upgraded, and he came back and recorded three more songs And then I upgraded more gear and he came back and recorded six songs that I produced and engineered and Vocal coaching That ended up on his first five times platinum album When I met Luke, he had awesome instincts, rhythmically, and Tone But I taught him a lot of the tricks of singing in the studio that I learned from Seth Riggs when I was in Los Angeles for five years, and he taught Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder Prince Ray Charles, Barbara Streisand, Hall & Oates, David Coverdale, Sebastian Bach, and too many others to list. And then I moved to Nashville and studied voice with Renee Grant, Williams, who taught Christina Aguilera, Garth Brooks, and all of the super stars of the 90s and early 2000s before she passed away Both of those Vocal Coaches being iconic I shared all of that information and taught Luke how to sing in the studio But his instincts were already on the way to greatness Rock on Luke
@DC Electric I heard that same line about iTunes and that must have been a 15 minutes of fame moment. After looking today 3-20-23, I didn't see his name at #1 for artist, song or album. I guess the creek ran dry, kinda like upchucks career.
This was a dope origin story. Had a passion in music early, pursued the academic route, got kicked in the nuts. Gave up on it, went the college route because you're "supposed" to. Failed at that, found himself at 21 years old - which is young but it isn't when you are 21. You feel the clock ticking on finding a passion - and while having some alone time, decided fuck it. Might as well go for it. At worse, you will fail and be in this same spot anyway. And here he is
Luke is a dude who is a perfect example of having g trade schools for kids, not every kid is book smart they would rather be doing all day! He seems so genuine, look at him now! Love to meet him, I sing a lot of his stuff!
Bro acting like he stumbled into music. He’s been a vocalist since he was a child and sang solo at Carnegie hall while he was still in school. Music was always his entire life
It’s always amazing to me how non-musicians are fascinated with musicians who don’t read music. Music is from the heart. You don’t have to read. Reading won’t help you create either.
That happened to me. I took two guitar lessons as a kid because my parents made me do it and I hated it. Then in my late teens I bought a guitar and started tinkering with it and now I can't put it down.
I'm not even a huge fan of Upchurch or anything, but the dude worked hard to get where he is, he deserves what he's earned. And it makes sense to let him share his story when he helped Luke get to where he is today.
Wow, he seems totally different than his music. No mention of Ryan Upchurch, Can I get an outlaw? People try to erase the past and rewrite history. Smdh.
I think a lot of people aren’t giving enough attention to one little detail. All this success and the lifetime of opportunity that’s before him was set in motion by one thing. A mothers encouragement. Talk to your kids, your family, your friends. You don’t know how big one small gesture could be
Most musicians who learn to play by ear and teach themselves their instrument struggle to learn how to read site/sheet music, but the saving grace is we know what the chords are so we can reed chord sheets. The more creative and motivated musicians in my opinion.

It would be great for him to quit lying how he became known in music cause he didn’t have hardly had a following at all in 2014 and then when he did the song “outlaw” with the chart topping, completely independent, outlaw himself UPCHURCH!!! That song was the first song he ever did that reached tens of millions of views. That was what put him on the music map to become as big as he is.
My head hurts trying to read your comment. How bout a comma or a period, every now and again, instead of two, long ass, run on sentences??? That would truly be great!!!
I've never learn to read music as well but I soon realized that understanding theory was significant. Theory will progress your learning and skills much faster than someone who just tries to remember what to play.

Sorry should have added fake country boy
He sounds pretty country to me! But everyone has a right to thier own opinion on music.
Larry the cable guy sounds like he's from the south as well, but he's from Wisconsin. Isn't about the sound it's the way he acts an how he's treated people I'm from nc an have talked to people who've known him an hes a mainstream sellout not exactly an opinion when there's been mutiple sources that say hes fake
Luke Combs got his start because of Ryan Upchurch. #RHEC
Looking forward to seeing Luke play at BOA stadium July 15th! Going to be one hell of a concert. Carolina proud
For the longest time I couldn't read music and only played through chord diagrams or tabs, until I finally found like a reading music for kids book that was simple enough to start.
Also, kudos to his mom for encouraging him to learn guitar.
Remember the name?
What is the book name?
@@alejandronopasanada5302 The book's name is: theory made easy for kids by Lina Ng book 1, note, this is really introductory and even comes with stickers. If you want something more grown up there's Learn to read music by Howard Shanet. This books are really great
@@JesseFloyd1991 The book's name is: theory made easy for kids by Lina Ng book 1, note, this is really introductory and even comes with stickers. If you want something more grown up there's Learn to read music by Howard Shanet. Both books will get you there
We have two super badass podcasts coming. I can't wait!
I'm almost 40 and still hope to learn to play the guitar. I have played the alto saxophone since the 4th grade so I'm not a complete novice to music. I just need to find the time...
You're never going to find the time. Make the time.
You can totally do it!
Luke combs
Before I met Luke,
I had already won an Emmy and worked with artists. Trace Adkins, Michael Ray, Cole Swindell, Craig Campbell, Craig, Morgan, lonestar Randy Houser.
I Produced and engineered and Mixed and Vocal coaching for the first three songs that Luke ever recorded in his life
Including the song that they added Upchurch to
Can I get an outlaw
That I produced for Luke
I hired Musicians that ended up being on his number one smash Hurricane.
He hadn’t recorded any songs “ever”
I had modest gear that I upgraded, and he came back and recorded three more songs
And then I upgraded more gear and he came back and recorded six songs that I produced and engineered and Vocal coaching
That ended up on his first five times platinum album
When I met Luke, he had awesome instincts, rhythmically, and Tone
But I taught him a lot of the tricks of singing in the studio that I learned from
Seth Riggs when I was in Los Angeles for five years, and he taught Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder
Prince Ray Charles, Barbara Streisand, Hall & Oates, David Coverdale, Sebastian Bach, and too many others to list.
And then I moved to Nashville and studied voice with
Renee Grant, Williams,
who taught Christina Aguilera, Garth Brooks, and all of the super stars of the 90s and early 2000s before she passed away
Both of those Vocal Coaches
being iconic
I shared all of that information and taught Luke how to sing in the studio
But his instincts were already on the way to greatness
Rock on Luke
Upchurch made him famous dumbass
Bring @Upchurch on your show !!!
Shout out to Ryan Upchurch for making #1 spot on iTunes today with the Pioneer album 💿 #Creeksquad #Upchurch
Rayan help him. Get going then they shit on him. They he cry about one song to make his name bigger.
Luke is a sale out saying the confederate flag on his guitar was a mistake and shitting on Ryan
Ryan really out here in multiple genres making it happen while truly independent! Won’t see him apologizing for being who he is.
CreekSquad Downunder 🔥🔥🔥🌎
And here he is
Besides the fact that he straight up lied.
That just it A STORY 😂😂😂
He's a punanny
This guy RYAN UPCHURCH should have be talked about I'm just saying,,
Luke is a dude who is a perfect example of having g trade schools for kids, not every kid is book smart they would rather be doing all day! He seems so genuine, look at him now! Love to meet him, I sing a lot of his stuff!
Respect to Luke & love his music but one big thing he failed to mention was the guy that put him on the map. Gotta give credit where it’s due.. #rhec
Seen him at the MVP arena back in October. Very good show
Ryan upchurch was and is one of the first and biggest country singer to blow up online stop fkn lying.
I saw him live at seahawk stadium he is my favorite country singer easily. "Crazy beautiful" video gives me goosebumps
He's fake country. Nc we don't claim him. He's a big peice of fake hockey
Joe needs to get Zach Bryan, Childers, and Colter on now. This new generation is reviving real country music and bringing to bigger heights than ever.
Or or or hear me out…billy currington
I had no clue that Luke finishes almost every sentence with the word “dude” when he speaks. Dude!!! Sweet!!!
Upchurch n Rogan would be bad ass show
That Waylon hat is so dern badass. Cheers, Luke!
Luke Combs is my hero ;) have a good day!
That happened to me. I took two guitar lessons as a kid because my parents made me do it and I hated it. Then in my late teens I bought a guitar and started tinkering with it and now I can't put it down.
That’s awesome!!!! I like those kind of story’s. They’re a huge inspiration.
I knew there would be a bunch of upchurch fans in the comments lol. He should get him on soon
I'm not even a huge fan of Upchurch or anything, but the dude worked hard to get where he is, he deserves what he's earned. And it makes sense to let him share his story when he helped Luke get to where he is today.
Just checked Spotify and it’s not there yet!
You don’t know how big one small gesture could be
Upchurch should get an invite to Joe's podcast to give his side. See what ppl think about Luke then 😂
Good to see ya Luke
Enjoyed listening
Same. Can’t read music at all but I play 4 instruments proficiently. It’s a cool talent but nothing compared to creativity
2 LEGENDS!!!!
That was one of the most honest interview moments I've seen in a long time.... He seems like a good guy. 👍
Glad to see it worked out for someone it's very hard man playing now for 35 years but I only played for personal reasons bless ya brother
No one wants to know my thoughts I give them no one listens it's a narcissistic world esp someone who isn't real
Anyone else not seeing new episodes on Spotify?
You gotta love how Upchurch is like Voldemort for Luke combs.
!! We do not speak that name !!!😱
Most musicians who learn to play by ear and teach themselves their instrument struggle to learn how to read site/sheet music, but the saving grace is we know what the chords are so we can reed chord sheets. The more creative and motivated musicians in my opinion.
This man single handedly saving country music. Love me some Luke Combs.
Let it die.
Country is the worst shit ever created!
Heehawing MFrs
@Magic Jordan I have two. Rather poor attempt at an insult there bud.
Sturgill, Billy strings, Tyler childers, colter wall.. Those guys are saving country, Luke is going for the pop/country sound.
@Magic Jordan As a non american asian, Country > your peoples killing stealing cocaine snorting music
Colter wall
Thanks Joe & Luke! Great podcast
Well Joe you have to invite Ryan Upchurch on your show now. Especially since Luke lied and he can tell you the truth about this sellout and how he actually got his first fame in music through Ryan Upchurch and #CreekSquad
Love you Luke!
I’m just blown away Joe thought Calgary was a country …
He should really publicly thank Ryan Upchurch instead of throwing him under the bus
FACTS 💯
Lol, you think his brief appearance in Upchurch video made Combs? hold on. 😂😂😂😂
Luke Combs is fake
@@lt.spears1889 find a video he realeased before 2015 that had more views
Every artist plays with and opens for other people when they are being discovered. I don’t have a clue what video you guys are talking about and I listen to luke combs religiously. He was on his way either way. Relax.
His first Hit was Can I Get A Outlaw with Ryan Upchurch give church his creds
Wtf Luke talking about? He and Kane was not anywhere close to being the first social media anything, matter of fact Luke would’ve never been where he is now without #RyanUpchurchofficial.
omg so excited to see Luke on Rogan.
Joe please have upchurch on ur podcast i know you only have people on you are interested in talking to urself but if you look into Ryan Upchurch i promise you'd be interested in what hes gone threw his entire career/life. If it wasnt for ryan there would be no luke combs
100%
You got that right! This sell out turned his back on Upchurch who brought him to light. #creeksquad #upchurch
Loved hearing this!
Hey Joe, you “love those awesome stories”??? You should reach out to Ryan Upchurch & invite him on your show.. NOTHING BETTER THAN HAVING 2 GOATS IN THE SAME ROOM. Just like you Joe, he’s the ORIGINAL... & THE MOST TALENTED.. (not to forget, he’s funny A.S)..
Jre is the best
No mention of Ryan Upchurch at all 🤣
Luke Combs is my guy! He is awesome.
He needs to have Ryan Upchurch on the show!!
Doubt it’ll ever happen but would be better than Luke Combs
@@kassidywoods9415 I haven’t watched this episode yet. They didn’t happen to talk about “can I get an outlaw” did they?
No doubt I know I know yo rogaine and Ryan Upchurch what end up burning one and become best friends
@@Outkast353 who the f*** is Luke Combs anyway
Anyone else not have this episode pop on their Spotify til they searched it ? I saw this video went to his channel it wasn't there so then I searched it saw shane gillis was on the 17th went back to the channel to see that since I'm saving luke combs for work tomorrow and didn't see his episode. So searched it and there it was then clicked back on his channel page and it was there when it wasn't less than a minute earlier.
Exactly that's what I'm saying
Forreal, this shows how unauthentic he is and will fabricate a story to look good. Its a joke.
Y’all outlaw nut riders are hilarious
Oh really? The first time i heard him was hurricane... that's the song that blew him up.
