Am 5th generation Hakka and mixed. My great great grandfather was sent to British Guiana by the Basel missionaries to work with the Hakka community in Georgetown. My great great grandmother was also Hakka. Thank you for these videos Professor 🙏
Thanks for posting. This video makes me feel homesick. I am a 3rd generation Bao’an Hakka speaking Sabahan but living in Canada now. Hakka is like the National language of Sabah. We speak only in Hakka among family members.
I did a quick search on Sabah. The population is around 3.4 million people and Chinese people constitute around 9% of that. But from the sentiments of the guest speaker and yourself, it seems that Hakka is spoken by all 3.4 million residents in the state. Is that true?
I’m a Hakka from in Sabah, now based on the UK. Many of my Hokkien or Fukien, Hainanese or Cantonese or Teochew friends can speak Hakka. And I can speak their dialects too. Unless Hakka is spoken in the home, some younger generations may start to lose interest in speaking Hakka. So thanks be to Prof Liu in trying to promote the use of Hakka among the young people.
I am from Kuala Lumpur living in UK glad to know so many hakka living in Sabah. Hakka people are really hardworking people around the world. Thank you for posting.
On the island of Borneo there are many Hakka people. Especially in Sabah, Sarawak and Singkawang. You have to go to the city of Singkawang, the city of the Hakka people.
I stay in kk, sabah and it is true previously that" if you cant speak hakka, you cant survive in sabah". But nowadays, most young chinese here speak more mandarin and less hakka as there are plenty of chinese migration from peninsula and sarawak to sabah bringing their own dialects. However, hakka is still popular in most of the major cities in malaysia such as kajang, ipoh, semenyih, batu pahat, kuching, miri, etc but not as widely spoken as in Sabah. Nowadays we hv plenty of other chinese group such as sarawakian foo chow doing business in Sabah and they are the owner of many succesful and major business here.
I'm from KL and I've only finally been to Sabah last year. Hakka is really the lingua franca Chinese language there, my Grab driver aunty was not a Hakka but she was quite fluent as she learned from friends. I'm definitely coming back there again, hopefully even live there some day.
I love my Hakka language, learnt it before I picked up Mandarin and Hokkien. Sabahan at heart, living in Australia with Wuhua connection, thank you for the great historical lesson, keep up the good work!
This episode is an eye-opener I am a Sabahan sino - kadazan, and I speak Hakka growing up although my Chinese descent is Cantonese on my grandfather side, out of my 4 children, only my eldest daughter speaks Hakka to her kids, the rest can only understand a few hakka words. The names Lunchun and wuhua, I've heard my mom discussed with my aunt, my aunty spoke a few sentences of the Lunchun Hakka, it sounds like a sing-song language, rather funny to my ears. Dunno how correct did my late aunt pronounce it though.
Thank you, Prof. Liu. Sabah is my homeland and I was there a week ago. My Hakka improves every time I am back in Sabah but I will not be able to reach the level of my late parents & late uncle (my father & uncle taught & preached in Hakka) - I use English when I cannot remember a word in Hakka. It will be interesting to see if the younger generations in Sabah will be able to speak Hakka with their parents / grandparents over the next decade or so - some young members of my extended family in Sabah can understand Hakka but cannot or will not speak it. Still, it is never too late to learn.
Every Hakka should speak Hakka to each other. The usage will ensure the continuation of the Hakka language. It should all begin at home because there will be plenty of opportunities for young students to be exposed to other languages. Hakka begins with me, and Hakka begins at home.
I agreed… i love the Hakka culture .. so I speak Hakka at home so my nephews and nieces would exposed to it and we can preserve the dialect . The gentleman the teacher interviewed speak the exact Hakka as my family .
Malaysian TV should have Hakka programmes. Right now, the country's only Chinese TV 8 channel is airing Cantonese and Hokkien drama serials from Hong Kong and Taiwan respectively. Why can't Hakka productions be on the station's menu?
That would be interesting..I have learned that the Chinese taught the Peruvian how to grow rice and brought the vegetables there to grow. Now the Peruvians call ginger ‘geng’ scallion ‘chong’
Thanks Prof Liu for the excellent video. Keep up the great work you are doing. I’m from Sabah based in the UK. Have you done any research or videos on the DNAs and origin of the Hakka people? One DNA ancestry test I have seen show some genes from northern and western minority and no southern Han genes.
Melayu and Hakka (dna, language, culture) all Chinese descendant. Melayu Austronesia language root still can track to old mandarin language with local southwestern dialect in yunnan that still exist in Bulang Dai ethnic group (Ecun Buyang , Qabiao/Kabao, Paha/Baha).
From my understanding, in the mid-late 80's, when Sabah was one of the 3 opposition States in Malaysia, the population of immigrants from Southern Philippines and Indonesia were given Malaysian citizenship by the Federal government at that time to increase the population with the sole intent to out-vote the local Sabahans in general elections. What the Federal government didn't expect nor had intended was for government officials to sell large numbers of identity cards to migrants (including to those from Bangladesh & Pakistan) that resulted in immigrants outnumbering the original Sabahans. Sabah used to be majority Christians (same as the other Malaysian State of Sarawak), but with the influx of the huge numbers of predominantly Muslim Filipinos, Indonesians, Bangladeshis, and Pakistani, Islam became the majority religion and, from that point onwards, was the start of the decline in use & popularity of the Hakka language. Of course there were also other factors for the decline.
Hakka language went extinct in Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia due to the influence from Singapore's Speak Mandarin Campaign launched by PM Lee Kuan Yew. Ironically Lee Kuan Yew is a Hakka but drove Hakka language to extinction.
i am Sabahan, living in Australia now. I teach my 4 years old daughter to speak Hakka and she speaks quite well.
You should speak to her in Hakka most of the time.

Unfortunately no - Colonisation encouraged English as a primary language and ancestors lost both language and a lot of cultural heritage
