I bought a Phoibos Leviathan last year, and I've been really happy with it. No QC problem at all, not even a minor scuff on the DLC-treated case, and the NH35 has been running great. I do recommend Phoibos, although this one doesn't grab my interest for whatever reason.
I think that’s more of a “To infinity and beyond!” rather than a salute. You can tell this because the astronaut is leaning forward, rather than standing up straight. Thanks for the review.
Phoibos has some nice original designs and good quality. I bought myself a Eagle Ray GMT (in red) and my girlfriend a Sea Nymph (in white) and we love them both. The fact they use good movements as a base is nice, both sporting Swiss Ronda movements rather than the usual cheaper movements used by other micro brands. Price and style are great and i highly recommend their original designs if they catch your eye!
I thoroughly enjoy Phoibos. Not all their designs are for me but they have several attractive pieces with better fit/finish than many more expensive watches. I have a blue Wave Master that’s fantastic and have my eye on getting another soon.
I actually like the quirkiness and originality of this dial. I even like the handset! And I’m with you on the logo…looks perfect! Love a great logo without a signature.
Super weird designs but decent quality. Don't ever make a deal with them other than a review in exchange for a free watch because they will NOT honor the terms of any agreement. I literally named one of their early models for them(the Wavemaster) and they chose not to give me credit nor honor the terms of our other agreement. Yeah, you could say I'm a tad bitter!...lol.
Of their models, the Kraken & Eagle Ray are definitely the most attractive (and worth a review!). Others tend to suffer from poor font choice or somewhat childish looking shapes on the dial
I really like the dial layout! But you're right with the font on the bezel - most watches seem to not have appropriate (though subjective) font on the bezel, including on the Grand Seiko diver with a sapphire bezel.
First of allBen, thank you for a new thread and also for every review about watches. All of them made from a impartial and also aseptic point of view. Such a good advice for us all. This model wich Phoibos has produced is a "tooly- sportive" dive watch, made in titanium. The best is its dial truly. More than 300 bucks for a watch wich is equipped with an NH-35 is too much from my particular point of view. Being equiped with a Miyota 9000 series or a Sellita one would have been an score. Above all, thank you Ben for bringing to us this model and for everything as well. Saludos!!
Has a few shortcomings like every release and other more questionable decisions but take those away and it's a pretty different and quirky watch. Too big sadly but like you said they have smaller in the range. Nicely done mate 👍
Phoibis has proven that they have the manufacturing chops - that matte dial, the titanium finish and sharp edges on the crown guards, the sandwich dial, etc. But the - to be generous - quirky design choices on this watch make it a nonstarter for me, and as a child of the 60s I'm cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs for anything that has even a whiff of space and astronauts. I'll wait for another Phoibos design to add to the two I already own.
Hi Ben. I’m confused by your review. Whilst I can’t dispute the pros and cons you have pointed out, this version of the Apollo has been superseded by a Version 2 which is quite different. Whilst this version in different colour ways are still available, I actually think the V2 is much better looking. I myself have a green dial Wavemaster and I have to say it is a beautiful watch. The dial is exquisitely detailed, with the wave pattern very reminiscent of an Omega Seamaster. Build quality is excellent and it feels really well put together. It’s a larger watch, with some weight to it, and the non-tapering bracelet may not be everyone’s taste, but on that point the engineer bracelet is supremely comfortable. I don’t think the Apollo was one of their bigger sellers, but the redesign V2 looks better.
Shouldn't we instead be baffled by the actions of Phoibos themself over the 'redesign', under the same name no less? It seems to have about Zero things in common with the previous model. Everything user-facing: the dial, the hands, the lume colours, the crown position even, and the fonts, and even even the case material are different now. How is this not a completely new model and is instead 'Apollo' again?
Great review Ben of this quite unusual watch. I have three titanium watches from different manufacturers and you do notice case v bracelet finish differences. It does not bother me too much but I get where you are coming from. This is a big watch but the lightness of titanium offsets that hopefully. Not for me though. It will sell well for its looks alone, nice to be different even if different is not nice in everyone's eyes😂
2 things came to mind 1 the large crown a tad easier to use for us chaps that have working mans fingers , 2 the pose of the space man on the back is reminiscent of Buzz Lightyear ...... to infinity and beyond !!!
They have now released a new Apollo version which is nothing like this one but still has the same spaceman. Shame really as I have 3 Phoibos and on those the casebacks are incredible but for the apollo it’s a let down and I find it strange they haven’t upgraded it.
If surface hardness is so important, why not go for a layer of titanium nitride? Gold-ish color, used to coat steel drill bits but can coat titanium as well.
I read a lot of divisive comments about the Apollo. The watch is different, yes, it's not as most cookie-cutter/homage divers out there, but I do think a lot of people are just being fuzzy or picky about it. Are there things that I would change? Perhaps, but then again I might as well design my own watch to my own likes and specifications. In my opinion, it's always appreciated when a brand tries to do something that "breaks" the mold even if it's just a tad. But to each their own. Everybody has different tastes. And I'm a sucker for sober eye-catching dials, if that makes sense. Overall it's a pretty solid watch. A lot of bang for your buck. I own the blue dial version and I love it! A real looker and a compliment magnet. It's become one of my favorite watches to wear.
03:51 "Um akchutally, it's the right hand that would be _problematic_ 🤓" Joking aside, I can't believe they let that go to print as the final design. Own goal. 💀💀💀
Wow! Startling similarity to my Hamtun Kraken 2.... amazingly so. Except the Hamtun manages to blend the colours of the titanium case and bracelet to be..... identical. There's even an octypus logo. Castellated bezel? Check!
I have a very nice Phoibos diver with stainless steel and ultra brush brushing.😉 It's a great watch, but I'm not into titanium, despite hardness coating, they scratch very easily as I found out to my horror when I scratched my Seiko Titanium on coral despite its supposedly super hard diashield coating. Unless you're desk diving, stay clear of titanium, and even then watch out for rogue staples and paperclips.
I think RZE uses Ultra Hex simply as a marketing term. It is still the exact same coating applied to any other microbrand watch that uses such coating....simply put, other microbrands are not as good at marketing as RZE.
not sure where they were going with that caseback maybe he was flying with the jetpack and they just forgot to draw his legs at an angle so instead of flying it looks like hes still standing
I have the Voyager version 2.0 in that powder blue and the Leviathan in PVD, love both but the Apollo never did it for me. The Kraken with champagne dial is tempting though.
The NH35 has been used to death but that doesn’t mean it’s bad, sure it’s not great but I don’t know what would be a competitive movement at the price point considering that the manufacturing of titanium cases isn’t cheap and the materials are much more expensive too. Other than that I really like the watch. It definitely isn’t for everyone but it is unique as you said wich is harder and harder to come buy these days (outside the word of micro brands). The biggest flaw imo is the color mismatch of the case and bracelet wich I can’t wrap my head around. Maybe they used a lower grade of titanium for the bracelet but that doesn’t seem logical. If I had almost 400€ to drop on a watch i‘d seriously consider this one.
I just had one of the worst customer experiences with this company. I ordered the Voyager and it arrived with a broken movement (hand winding and shake wasn't working). I then contacted Phoibos and they told me to "wear more than 8 hours to observe" as though it just needed time and would fix itself. I noticed that inside every Phoibos box they include a little note that says if you size the watch or take the plastic off of the bracelet they will not issue a full refund. When I proceeded to let them know this they said that I must cover shipping back to them and that there would ba a $50 to $200 fee if they suspected I wore it! Outrageous. Clearly trying to get their customers to null their refund. I wouldn't be surprised if they just lie about it and charge me anyways. Will document for proof should they try to pull a fast one. Just wanted to give a PSA to everyone to know how shady ordering direct from their website can be.
It's different but still pretty derivative...I just want to say though why do all these watch review and other product review channels always use that same music, sorta elevator jazz, swear teddy baldassarre uses exactly the same song
I don't hate the typeface as much as you, Ben, but the UltraHex thing is worrying. If they did that, what else is around the corner? I think time will tell with this watch that was not a pun sorry.
Great review and a really good looking watch. But then, I LIKE the Orient SK diver re-release so perhaps my approval may not be a reliable benchmark. With everything this watch has going for it they went with an NH 35 A movement? This is a unique watch with a solid, sturdy case. Using the same movement as everyone uses in everything is a disappointment.
I do like Phoibos, one of those brands I'd recognise even without the logo....I think they've only produced one piece that I don't like that being the great wall, can't be doing with squares and bricks on my dials creeps me out....I know not why....🏴⌚🏴⌚
Such a nice design. It grows on you over time 😅 but it's very expensive by Indian standards. I hope I can own something like this after my graduation. Some Day 😆
If you were familiar with 20th century history you’d notice that he uses the left arm while national socialist Germany as well as the ancient Romans used the right Arm for the salute. A decisive difference if this goes so much against you political believes
Btw, a new cardboard box is much more expensive to desigm and manufacture than a wooden or nylon box, thats why. Once you've manufactured half a million or so the savings of scale kick in but the set up costs are prohibative and also the factories concerned really don't need your custom as silly net zero rules prevent cheap manufacture of same in Europe and USA....
discovered your channel 2 months ago (i think) and have really enjoyed your reviews. Great analytical reviews while not taking yourself too seriously. Would really love a small move to include watches a little way up the budget chain - say maybe £500 - £1000 - £1500? I know these watches wouldn't necessarily be considered 'budget' by non watch nerds - but i think for people who have grown to love watches and want to maybe move into something a bit more special or maybe a one watch collection that cant shell out for a 5k omega - this part of the market is really important and i think your style of review and also the things you tend to focus on would be really interesting at this price point. I foresee alot of brands claiming all sorts of things being caught with their pants down... and conversely... some real gems being found for people who want to take that step - myself included. I have had a Hamilton Khaki king for 3 years now - and i love the watch - but for my 40th i want to maybe move to something in the range of a Sinn 556 or maybe even a Tudor BB 36 - and think this is a whole segment of the market your reviews would really sing. - anyway - thanks for the cool content.
I like this version of the Apollo but the new version they've just released looks like a kids watch. I'll stick with my Proteus and Wave Master for the time being
From the images I'd say that it is one of those watches whose date wheel sits too far back, making it awkward to read in gloomy light, or from non-perfect angles. I own a few sub-£100 watches suffering from the same issue, but at this price point this is very disappointing.
I’ll say it again - why do name brands get away with clear homage watches but Pagani gets a knowing chuckle? There’s no Seiko out there trying to look like something else?

Don't worry, Ben lad. The revolutionary salute is given with the right hand. Major Tom there is reaching out with his left. You're golden, mate.
I would like to think I speak for every viewer that the Pokemon movement introduction sequence would be welcome in every video going forward lmfao.
Deffinitly got a good laugh out of me, haven't seen the show in ages but any references to it still make me laugh
I like that Phoibos has dared to be different. I didn't like it the first time I saw it, but it grows on you.
I bought a Phoibos Leviathan last year, and I've been really happy with it. No QC problem at all, not even a minor scuff on the DLC-treated case, and the NH35 has been running great. I do recommend Phoibos, although this one doesn't grab my interest for whatever reason.

I own a couple and they are excellent value. Very well built for the price.
I keep reading it as Pho Bois, which would be an okay name for a Vietnamese soup restaurant…
I actually like the quirkiness and originality of this dial. I even like the handset! And I’m with you on the logo…looks perfect! Love a great logo without a signature.

I literally named one of their early models for them(the Wavemaster) and they chose not to give me credit nor honor the terms of our other agreement. Yeah, you could say I'm a tad bitter!...lol.
I'd venture the difference in tone between case and bracelet is due to radial brushing (case) Vs. vertical brushing (bracelet).
I love my Wavemaster, and I was very close to buying a Voyager, I don’t think the Apollo is for me though 😅
I think the character on the caseback is Buzz Lightyear, 'to infinity and beyond'
Handgestures are not trademarked. Hangestures are not bad.

I think this is pretty great value compared to others on the market
What is that watch at 5:11?
QC must be doing their job. Looks great close up.
Has a few shortcomings like every release and other more questionable decisions but take those away and it's a pretty different and quirky watch. Too big sadly but like you said they have smaller in the range. Nicely done mate 👍
I just got my first Phoibos, the red Voyager 3 that showed in the opening on the website page. I like it.

I Love that Pokémon reference near to end 😂😂😂

I think the hour markers are mini rocket ships. To compliment the case back.
They have now released a new Apollo version which is nothing like this one but still has the same spaceman. Shame really as I have 3 Phoibos and on those the casebacks are incredible but for the apollo it’s a let down and I find it strange they haven’t upgraded it.

I absolutely love it! I have the steel version in now and that's also fantastic!

Hey mate! Just subbed. What's the watch at 2:40? I really like it. 🍻
Gotta say for a space diver it it kinda cool for a seiko
The clasp is identical to my old Casio Edifice EF131
The marks on the dial remind me the WT Author No.1973 dive watch.
Do these companies let you keep these watches then for reviewing them, or do they expect them back ?
Maybe by any chance You could do a Omega Swatch review and Your thoughts? :)
Wonderful.
Companies need to understand the importance of smaller wrists.
I don't but close.
I think RZE uses Ultra Hex simply as a marketing term. It is still the exact same coating applied to any other microbrand watch that uses such coating....simply put, other microbrands are not as good at marketing as RZE.
I always change out my steel bracelets for leather straps but I always keep the titanium.

Anyone have suggestions for watches that suit my frist of 14,5cm. Price up to 250€ and preferably with sapphire glass. Thank you!

great looking watch
I love the brand but not really a fan
of the titanium.
I like that. Good looking watch.
My Speedy came in a nice suitcase.
Great video
Of only it was day date it would be more seiko skx alike
Where is the company actually based on?
That astronaut on the back is posed like Mega Man firing his cannon.

Hi Ben!
If ever you get tired of the looks of this watch contact me, I would be very interested 👍since I have big wrists!
Thanks for the review 👌❤️👍
I like this version of the Apollo but the new version they've just released looks like a kids watch. I'll stick with my Proteus and Wave Master for the time being
Ben,
You crack me up!
😆✌️❤️⌚
Well made, decent looking watch. I think a bit of a silly comment RE: TM of coating. easy mistake to make. V silly comment RE: spaceman pose. come on.
The back case... lol.... instant bestseller in Germany 😂
From the images I'd say that it is one of those watches whose date wheel sits too far back, making it awkward to read in gloomy light, or from non-perfect angles. I own a few sub-£100 watches suffering from the same issue, but at this price point this is very disappointing.
They do some nice designs but this one doesn't appeal at all. I have a Wavemaster v2 and that's a fantastic watch.
Nice video, though this watch isnt quite my taste in terms of looks. Also it looks very chunky. I dont think this has to do with your wrists.
My friend told me the hour indices was amongus 💀
Sapphire isn't glass mate .
Squid are cephalopods not molluscs, but yep it is way too big.
That spaceman pose...lmfao
Bought a Phoibos last year, way crooked dial, sent it back. Probably just got a bad one.
Police Batman review please
Thnx i like it
Is it just me or does the logo look like a Luchador mask from a distance?
I never ever would buy a watch without sapphire glass
‘Quirky’ is not good, it’s for sure a pejorative.
All watch company's should use negative endlinks
Review a brew watch
Cool 😎
Good review. 'Oribble watch....
That case back… I imagine they intended for the figure to point to the stars, but the result is so out of place. Even down right offensive.
should have had the astronaut dabbing instead of performing a sieg heil
I’ll say it again - why do name brands get away with clear homage watches but Pagani gets a knowing chuckle? There’s no Seiko out there trying to look like something else?
Righton.......hail hydra!!!
