My perspective on “lite” consoles is that they will always be a console that allows a less fortunate kid to be able to experience games. That $100 is a big difference to a lot of parents and without it, I would never have gotten my first DS years ago

That, It’s pretty much like a 2ds: an entry point for people not wanting to spend too much on a game system with always the option to move to a better one later on.

This is where Scott seems to be out of touch occasionally. When you look at his collection of games and game systems, it's pretty obvious he has A TON of money to spend. 100 dollars is a lot of money to most people. And I say that as a person who spends a ton of money on games and controllers.

Thats why I loved the 2DS. Around 2017-18, I really wanted to get back into gaming, but was too broke for a Switch.
But the 2DS being only $79.99 WITH a game included was an absolute steal. It was perfect for me as I always find 3D gimmicks unappealing anyway, but I still wanted to play some great games.
It’s important to give options for folks on a budget.

I worked at GameStop for a few years during my undergrad and before the OLED the lite used to sell REALLY well. Just had a lot of parents of younger kids come in and didn’t want the commitment of a $300 device that was more complicated and fragile. And the amount of attempted Lites that were traded in just completely fucked and obviously manhandled by a child under 10 was crazy

I have been a home console guy since day one of playing video games, yet owning a Switch Lite myself isn't really bad. Now that I got a used switch for free with he dock, I still use my lite more. My biggest gripe with the Switch Lite isn’t that it can’t be docked or connected to the TV, but simply because IT’S MISSING HD RUMBLE. There are countless games that I can think of that have such nuanced rumbles built into them that just increases the immersion so much more. Loved the console, but eventually sold it in favour for an OLED just to have the rumble back .

    • @athena5573
      @athena5573 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

i agree, i didnt even realise that it lacked HD rumble until i connected some wireless joycons to it and suddenly felt vibration. probably the biggest downside to me, i like playing my switch while watching tv in the background, so while the dock is definitely a nice thing to have, i'm not really missing much. i just wish the rumble was there... i do think the gyro might be better on the lite? i dont know i tried my gf's animal crossing switch and i just felt like my lite's gyro controls felt tighter in like zelda and fortnite

I love that the switch lite exists, but I agree with your statement that it's been really overshadowed by the original switch. When you're given the option to pay $100 more for the ability to connect to a TV, it almost feels like you're missing out by not spending the extra money. I would have loved if Nintendo allowed people to plug the switch lite in to a TV using a USB-C to HDMI connection or sold an aftermarket dock, but unfortunately that's just functionality that you can never get back after the initial purchase.

That's one of things that bothers me about the Switch Lite. Without the TV connectivity, why call it Switch at that point? The entire point of the Switch is to be able swap between being a home console and a handheld. If you keep it as a handheld, that kind of removes the whole gimmick, no?

@@alexandercorbett1147I mean Nintendo has done this before, whole gimmick of the 3ds was 3d, but then they made the 2ds and it’s own line which got popular for fixing some problems of the original. On the days where I need to be in the office, I bring it along, on the nights where my young children won't stay in bed I bring it out and play on the rocking chair in the hallway while I play hall police, and when I travel you know it comes out on the plane. I honestly would prefer a few inches off the screen to somehow make it pocket-able. But at this season in my life, TV mode is just not possible. I would have also enjoyed this device as a youth, because I had a large family and never had access to the family room TV. So perhaps I also have a bias for handhelds.

I will say, part of this is because I usually tell people if they are getting it for someone who is younger, I recommend the lite because of the fact it can't get broken as easily. With the original switch, there are so many ways it can get broken just by taking off the controllers alone so I always recommend the lite for younger people.

I'd kill for an OLED Switch "Micro". Make it smaller, lighter, with better brightness, contrast, and less noise/ideally no fan, if they can manage.
Shoot, I'd buy five of them, no joke. Enough for our household, plus a couple of friends.

I just got a used Switch Lite since I want to play games in a more portable way. And just like you said, it is kind of impressive to play Switch games in the smaller handheld, while in the regular Switch I'm always thinking how better it would be if I could have a more powerful Switch.

This thing was definitely made for train commuters in Japan. The handheld market is so much stronger there given the lifestyle and the social aspect. I wish it were different here in the west (especially most of the USA), but that's just how it goes.

I can second this, for some strange reason the Switch Lite is a little bit more cheap than in the US, even going as low as 150 Dlls in some supermarkets. (Wich is pretty strange given that the normal Switch usually costs around 400-500 dlls).

I think it’s a pretty niche product but serves an important market. The cheaper price makes it way more palatable for parents of multiple kids. Each one will want a their own Switch (especially for long trips or car rides) to play on and this helps cut costs and solve arguments vs giving them a priced and more fragile iPad or some garbage cheap Android tablet
