An angry Jubilee in a blizzard, what a magnificent shot; I think you must have sold your soul to Old Nick to arrange that one. Thank you for your dedication to the hobby.
Thanks Gary , as I was waiting for Galatea the conditions worsened and I thought if it doesn’t appear soon I’d have to leave as the roads would’ve been impossible to get home but thankfully I got lucky 👍
These clips show your dedication to your passion - come sun, rain or snow. Great work. Loved all the shots. My fav has to be through the snow at 1:25 although Miles Platting bank at 3:59 is a powerful shot! Galatea - a figure in Greek mythology - was famed for her alabaster like complexion (love the white smoke) and she was a spirit of music (the beat of that exhaust)!!!!
Excellent footage, thoroughly enjoyed watching it. A credit to the crews on the footplate, and those who keep this loco in tip-top condition. Stanier design at it`s best..and hat`s off to you Sir, , for braving the wintry conditions, and bringing us some different footage in very snowy conditions...
Great compilation video Steve, showing the Jubilee at its finest doing what it was built to do. Let's hope we see a lot more of her this year than last year.
Those were the days Steve, not long ago but seems like ages since we had solo steam, very nice collection there, probably my favorite loco too, it was a great sight to see, cheers Steve . 👍
Poetry in motion! Wonderful stack talk! A steam locomotive doing what they do best! Hauling folks from over there to somewhere else in remarkable comfort! I'm jealous that this is across the pond from where I live! 😂
@@TheStephengthompson Being brought up in the age of steam, I think what beautiful machines they were/are, right down to the lowly shunting locos in the sidings
Fantastic collection of scenes. I'd love to have been there for that last one - I bet that was impressive to get close to. Being a dignified lady, Galatea had of course, refused to have her backside disfigured by the obligatory diesel carbuncle :)
Thanks Phil , the last shot worked well to be honest as on the day the snow was blowing into the lens so I had the camera hood shut until the last seconds and thankfully the snow that did get onto the lens didn’t spoil the shot 👍
A fine compilation Steve with many wonderful clips. Sad to watch in a way as we're unlikely to see such sights again unless there's a change of heart or things are going on that we don't know about!
Thanks David, while I was waiting the blizzard appeared and it got that bad I thought the steam better appear soon or I will have to head home or get stuck .
Appears to have a centre cylinder gland packing issue, clearly seen at 0:49 ! (Visible by the repeated steam emission coming from behind the centre of the front buffer beam cylinder drain cock pipe). A problem I notice with too many preserved locos out on the mainline !
@@TheStephengthompson My first Railway job (in the 1970's) was as a Shed Master in charge of a fleet of steam Locos ! So this minor issue of the cylinder gland packing is not serious, it simply means the loco losses a little steam, and the pressure in the cylinder is marginally interfered with. Probably loose a few horsepower in the process. The problem is most likely those responsible for putting in the "packing". This is effectively part of the daily maintenance of these mechanical monsters - they need a little TLC. Or possibly the material supplied for cylinder end packing is no longer what it used to be !
This loco along probably DoG is a testament to how far the preservation movement has progressed. I remember seeing the rusting hulk many years ago at the SVR I think and when I commented that they had their work cut out to restore her was told “Oh that’ll never be restored, she’s only been acquired to provide spares for the other two”. Now not only has she been restored to working order but has a main line ticket too!
Galatea is pulling 500 tons. The drawbar power is immense. In steam days, an occasional double header was the only assistance. The so called diesel assistance is to provide lecky, air conditioning and shunting. A superb watch. Thanks.
++@@TheStephengthompson ++ That's about what I thought. No doubt there are unladen weights shown on each carriage somewhere but then there'd easily be several more tons of people in each if it was full. That's a hell of a load to get moving from a standing start and to stop again when needed. Rather different to rubber on tarmac!
So it is but they’ve changed the name and number a few times but it’s still Galatea underneath Ben 👍👍Admittedly I didn’t mention that in the description so I’ve changed it 😃👍
@@geoffreyking4515Had a good chat soon years back with an ex BR steam driver called Gordon Hodgson who at the time had started working again for West Coast and he said they were a monster 👍👍
Thanks Colin . The shots apart from possibly the Oxenholme and the last were the only ones I could have panned around as the others were impossible due to various reasons but ultimately that’s my style of filming mostly.
Never was there a more true representation of the past. What a driver and crew! Fantastic video. Well done.❤
Great compilation with excellent videoing as usual.
"Unassisted." This only enhances my enjoyment of the fine sounds of a hard working steam loco!! Thank you!!
Cheers Peet , much appreciated 👍
Brilliant video , great to see the loco hauling MK1's and early MK2's. So much more authentic
Glad you enjoyed it Kevin 👍
poetry in motion, brilliant atmospheric filming, thank you

It's one of the finest shots of steam I have ever seen as it is so timeless. Just great,

Thanks for the kind words as they’re much appreciated and like you say a great sound on Mallerstang ledge 👍

Love Jubs , Back in the day often flogged and run to their max wonderful shot through the blizzard. Proper stuff.
well done
Thanks Paul , thankfully the location with the blizzard had a high wall to my right so the snow went over the top of the camera 👍😂

Happens a fair amount of times sadly but obviously I’m no tech expert.

Currently doing jack all in Carnforth whilst Tangmere and the Black Fives run about the place.
We shall see what happens very shortly 👍
Excellent footage, as always! What's the drawbar weight of those eleven coaches?
Good question John as someone mentioned five hundred tons earlier in the comments 🤷

Ten fully-laden coaches out of Manchester Victoria unassisted by a banker ?
Did this happen in the 1960’s ?
Thanks Elaine, it was some display out on Man Vic and I’d be surprised if they let a Jubilee loose with ten on back then.
An angry jube...don't they sound brilliant, give me a jube anytime

She sounded awesome, pity when filming you didn't follow the locomotive, it remained pointing in one direction. That was my only criticism.

@TheStephengthompson ok. I was just saying, but it's hard if your taking photos.
