Same band that song is Pop. Goes to world also. Enigma sadness or The River of belief or Gwar sick of you or Rock and roll or the road behind. Just name a few
They did this song as a “Bleep You” to getting kicked out of clubs for “Pogoing” that the bouncers thought was dangerous. One thing at the end was a Firebee target drone.
I was a teenager when this song came out down here in Australia and we heard it on the radio EVERY day for a long long time - became a cult classic for years - loved it
Wasn't quite a teen myself but definitely can concur with it bombarding the airwaves on the radio for quite a while In Australia. Between this song 'What About Me' by Moving Pictures, "6 Months in a Leaky Boat' by Split Enz and 'Down Under' by Men At Work it was a good year.
That little move with their arms forms an "S" for safety. One of my all-time favorite happy songs. I love the synth runs. In live versions, they have two synth players to pull this song off properly.
Thank you for this wonderful trip down memory lane for me! My teenage years where in the early to mid-80s, and this is probably my all-time favorite song (and video) from that era. All of us who want to can still... Dance (and sing)!!! Thanks again.
It's an 80s video, many of the 80s the videos had nothing to do with the song. Supposedly he wrote this song because he got kicked out of a disco for not dancing "safely" Thanx, Bill!! Keep on keepin' on, young lady!
Ah, to relive the joy of my misspent youth watching this video...Thanks for making me smile...I wore out a couple of cassette tapes due to this song...
Always loved this song and video. It came out when I was in jr high and was a huge hit. Seeing the dancing now reminds me how much I wish I could still move like that lol. Always thought she was a doll. Fun times back then.
80s child here. I just saw them last weekend on the Totally Tubular Festival tour with other 80s new wave bands. Ivan and the band were amazingly good. It was so fun.
If you watch videos made in the late 70's and early 80's it was usually just the band standing in front of the camera playing their songs. When Safety Dance released on MTV I remember thinking these people were all on drugs as the video was so offbeat. It's an example of how musicians struggled to come up with ideas for their music videos as at this time MTV and music videos in general were still a new concept and in their infancy. There was not yet an established formula for making music videos. So videos from the early 80s are some of the most creative.
Your comment "holy cheese muffins " just made me smile ☺. Great job on the reaction and I really like your energy, you are a beacon of light in an otherwise dark world, we need more people like you, keep up the good work and love your channel ❤.
Thank you for your lovely comment. 🤗💖 Hope to see you on our livestream in less than 1 hour as we are doing Anne Murray reactions and many, many more: th-cam.com/users/live41ZNlGfjjcE
This should be a commercial for Thorazine. How many times did I sit thru this and A Flock of Seagulls because a Van Halen video was "on its way." Damn you JJ Jackson!!
The costumes are medieval. You can see them dancing around a maypole which goes back to pagan origins. The one slight oversight was the presence of a telephone pole in one of the shots. I'm certain they didn't have phones back then, but it's not supposed to be a serious video. Absolutely love this song.
Filmed in the quintessentially English village of West Kington, the dry stone walls, and the bright red (British Post Office) post box 📮, the dancing mummers at the end give clues. Feels like a village's spring festival.
A wonderful celebration of joy! And I am like you. I have been exposed to so much music, my head is like a dish of hard candies left in the sunlight on the windowsill. You can't pick up just one piece.
Back in high school I heard two stories about this song. Originally I was told it was a protest song against nuclear armament. Some time later it came out that it was a protest song against bouncers at the local English clubs who were bugged with people either pogoing while dancing or mosh pits. Both of which were considered to be unsafe. You decide which you believe.
The song is about Nuclear disarmament and the flash of all the weapons on the end were to represent nuclear weapons of the time. A lot of the songs during this time period were subtle nuclear protest songs. The Renaissance fair also was to represent what life would be like after nuclear war.
Just saw these guys at the Totally Tubular Festival in DC. Out of the six or seven artists they stole the show. Opened and closed with Safety Dance. Reminded me they had a few other songs that got radio play (Antarctica, Pop Goes The World, etc.). Great catch on Alphaville Maggie. Sound of the times.
If you are looking for an 80's song that just makes you happy, then try Strawberry switchblade --- Since yesterday. Another 1 hit wonder, but one I am sure you will love.
The writer/lead singer Ivan Doroschuk has explained that "The Safety Dance" is a protest against bouncers prohibiting dancers from pogoing to 1980s new wave music in clubs when disco was declining and new wave was coming in

For me and millions of others we remember YOU can dance if YOU want to, YOU can leave your friends behind YOU can go where You want to........ For those of us who grew up with this song it was always YOU can dance. The Mandela Effect is real. The name is a terrible name but everyone is affected by the Mandela Effect.
Ivan absolutely looks like he could be part of my family (we are Frenchy Canuckiens.) In fact he looks more like my sister's brother than I do. Loved this song since it came out.
One of my many favourites. Depends on my mood. I've always thought that whoever wrote down the song's title got it wrong. From the lyrics, I believe the title should have been "Safe to Dance", which is in the lyrics.
When i was a teenager we used to joke with their name and call them "Men with one hit," and "Men without pants." Whenever I hear this song it reminds me of visiting a strip club in my early 20's. The DJ was playing it.
For me, this song was so hilarious at the time for them having been denied pogoing (which was a punk "dance" mostly consisting of jumping up and down and sideways...). Much like the mosh-pit of more recent years. So they went back to the may-pole dance of the middle ages, more or less, with this funny video. Well, pogoing way back then must have been just as harmful to the innocent bystanders of the time. Or not... 😆
I was very confused when you said it sounded like "Big In Japan" because I thought you meant the one by Martin Solveig and Dragonette. I think I've heard Alphaville's version once or twice but never paid much attention to it.
I heard that the song came out when they said the audiences at concert weren't allowed to dance because of insurance reasons. So if the singers gave the S sign, they could dance.
The odd images at the end of the video were the band's jab at the largely label-directed video: the song itself is a protest against a local club banning a dance called "the Pogo" on the basis that it wasn't safe - at the peak of the cold war! Ivan has always been anti-war, and the pettiness of banning a dance over safety in a post-nuclear world rubbed him the wrong way, so he and the band got those images inserted as a contrast to the cheerful and carefree video to make his point. Unfortunately, it went over most people's heads, but fortunately the video for DEVO's "Beautiful World" used a very similar last-minute contrast to make the same point - and at least a little more successfully. MWH were unfortunately typecast as a "novelty band" by this video - when in fact they were underrated. If you are interested, check out songs like "Antarctica", "The Great Ones Remember", or the short "Ban The Game" from their first album "Rhythm of Youth", or "No Dancing", "Mother's Opinion", "Messiahs Die Young" or "I Sing Last (Not For Tears)" from sophomore album "Folk of the 80s (Part III)" - well crafted pop music, with deeper lyrics than is generally expected of pop music.

"You know, that dance wasn't as safe as they said it was." --Philip J Fry, 31st Century
Safety Dance came out a couple of years before Big in Japan.
I just love both for dancing!!!!
They did this song as a “Bleep You” to getting kicked out of clubs for “Pogoing” that the bouncers thought was dangerous. One thing at the end was a Firebee target drone.
Absolutely correct!! I love that fact! I also love the Renaissance theme.
This is such a fun 🎶
I wo dered if anybody would contribute that!!
@@robertcampopiano6001 I used to go to a local club where we would pogo to the punk scene. It was such fun!
I agree

For years I thought they were an Australian band but then I realized I was mixing them up with Men At Work.
I was in my 20s when this came out. So much fun.
There is a video floating around where someone sings a "literal translation" to this video. It's quite hilarious if you ask me.
Imagine getting kicked out of the clubs for Pogoing and going home and writing this banger 💯. The 80s' kicked ass🤘
That little move with their arms forms an "S" for safety. One of my all-time favorite happy songs. I love the synth runs. In live versions, they have two synth players to pull this song off properly.
The video was filmed in west Kington a small village in England dates back to the 13th century
Kenny Baker is in the video he also played R2 -D2
Yeah, more than Teletubbies, the video gave me Ren Faire run amok vibes
Really ? Cool !!
Men Without Hats and Alphaville have such similar sounds...YES! Both lovely 80s gems!!!

I thought Safety Dance was an alteration on "Safe To Dance".
As an 80s kid and even today, this song 🎵 cheers me up when im sad. ❤
Ah, to relive the joy of my misspent youth watching this video...Thanks for making me smile...I wore out a couple of cassette tapes due to this song...
I was iny teens when this came out. It's a fun tune then, still fun now.
Oh - 80, like 40 years ago..👍

Believe it or not, Men Without Hats are still out there playing live shows!
80s child here. I just saw them last weekend on the Totally Tubular Festival tour with other 80s new wave bands. Ivan and the band were amazingly good. It was so fun.
I really love this album and this band. They had a really unique sound. Thanks for letting me listen to it again for the first time with you.
The Extended version are great
I definitely remember this song and video, it was part of the early MTV days lol.
I believe the young lady in the video is singing "dancé" in French, though it sounds like "and sing."
Bought that album based on that song alone. Still enjoy it.
Love this song. Very upbeat and fun.

This should be a commercial for Thorazine. How many times did I sit thru this and A Flock of Seagulls because a Van Halen video was "on its way." Damn you JJ Jackson!!
When released,, There was no in between with this song,, People either loved it or hated it.

Just saw Men Without Has about a week and a half ago. The best thing... I was not one of the oldest people at this show for once.
Just wait until you hear their song, "Pop Goes the World". The music video for that one is MAGICAL.
I love Pop Goes the World. It feels very underappreciated to me.
I used to live in the village of "West Kington" in Wiltshire,
Is that where the video for Safety Dance was filmed or is there some other kind of connection?
@@jacquelinecallejas1390 Where it was filmed , and its its still pretty much the same today! classic Wiltshire village !
This song was so far out of my wheel house and I loved it in the 80's. At the time I was into metal.
Infectious.... DANCE!
I never thought I would hear someone compare Safety Dance to Tellytubbies. I busted a gut laughing at that one.
Part of the reason I love this song is because it was filmed where I used to live (near Bath, Somerset)
Back in high school I heard two stories about this song. Originally I was told it was a protest song against nuclear armament. This is why Gen X is permanently happy compared to everyone else
No it's just the drugs
You absolutely HAVE to do the "literal interpretation" of this song.
Safety Dance came out first, I believe.
Safety (Dance) is important.
It was a Ren Fair for Mayfest.
That is the Maypole the kids are wrapping.
Well, if there’s a song that gives off Maggie vibes it’s this one

I would love to see you do a mash up of Big in Japan and Safety Dance! Big in Safety Japan? Safety in Japan Dance?
I* think the costumes are supposed to be ,medieval in theme, but it also looks like the backdrop for the future hobbits movies
most of the fans of this song are probably in their 60s!
Big Eighties One-Hit Wonders, baby.
The video was shot in the UK

Fun fact, this was the actual original ending to game of thrones but they decided to change it and give us a revised crappy ending.
Grabbed their band name because even in the heart of a Montréal winter they refused to wear hats, since it would mess up their hair.
