Well, it was a long time ago (1964) when I was commissioned as a 2LT in the Army after completing ROTC. I was put in the Artillery branch and placed in air defense. My base pay was $ 222 and $48 for subsistence allowance per month. I was assigned to a HAWK missile battery in Germany. I was there for 3 years. My army life consisted mainly being a Battery Control Officer at the HAWK site. A BCO was responsible for running the site and having all the equipment ready to fire missiles within given times, sometimes within 5 minutes in order to be prapared for a possible Soviet air attack. Our radars could see into East Germany and we would monitor planes flying there. Sometimes we could see a Soviet plane approaching the border and then veer off. And, of course you were responsible for the crew that was operating the site. The LT was responsible for selecting targets and ordering missiles fired. We did a lot of that in simulations, 2 or 3 times a day, many times for evaluation teams that were constantly showing up to test us (and stress us out). That was basically all I did in Germany. We operated the site was 24 hours per day every day all year long in rain, mud, and snow and freezing cold. It was a stressful job. I remember seeing our maintenance warrant officer being carted off in a strait jacket one night. As a bachelor I usually took the duty for a married officer so he could be with his wife on holidays, like Christmas. So sometimes I stayed on the site for 3 days at a stretch. The site was primitive, mainly tents, but we had one metal quanset hut. I only got to take about 10 days leave during my 3 years there. Bachelor officers were required to live in the BOQ at the barracks. Single NCOs had to live in the barracks. Married officers and NCOs had to live in the army housing units. We LTs didn't have all those financial considerations back in those days. My life mainly revolved around being on the missile site and crashing into my bed at the BOQ after I got off the site.
He does live a luxurious life but he can afford it. I would’ve bought a $2k used Camry. For entertainment, you don’t always have to spend money for fun. Lastly, $300 on groceries seems great to cook. I can’t wait to spoil myself as an officer.
Not sure i would go that far to call it luxurious, but he is off to a good start.
You're really living a life of luxury. No wonder I feel like everyone is rich and I'm not, it's because everyone is spending a large percentage of their income when I'm not.

I think it's because he always lived in NY it's probably because it's like that. Though as time goes by and you get promoted/time then the pay increase just goes up dramatically. Could be that probably.

Great, that is what I am calculating now, and I got confused. If I understand his explanation well, only $500 goes his saving account per month that is $6000 a year. If you add up the total savings even in a period of three years it will be only $18,000 in a rough calculation. Please, let me know yours.

I think he meant $25k houses in savanna are cheap too.
I think he meant to say he is saving for a down payment on a $250k home, but I’m pretty sure he is going to use the VA loan in which he won’t need to make a down payment in most cases.
In the military you don't need a downpayment, va loan.

This is absolutely not a typical case in the Army. If you want typical, put a Sergeant in that seat with a wife and two kids; preferably one that is not a POG which this guy probably is.
