In this video, I'm sharing 3 main things that private accounting is different from public accounting.

I choose Private accounting because I have a family and want to be home by 5:30 pm. I suppose this decision would depend on where you are in your life at the moment and near future.

I have been working in private accounting for 5 years and am about to finish my CPA. I have been debating if I should stick to private and go for a senior or management position, or go for public accounting and possibly start from the bottom... May I ask why you decided to go for public? And was it a pay decrease for you?

Hi Jackie. I absolutely understand your concern. However, just staying in public accounting for 2 years, I’ve learned so much more than what I learned in private for 5 years. Also, the salary pay in public during first two years may be low, but your pay accelerates quickly. I changed to public because I got bored with private accounting. In public accounting, every day is different and there are so many things to learn even when you are a manager or partner.

@@CPACareerPaths Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Do you recommend a large firm like big 4 or a mid size firm?

With some experience from private industry already, I would recommend to go for Mid-size firms instead of Big 4 as you will have a chance to get paid better and move up faster. Also, you may work with people who are on the same boat with you (have some prior experience somewhere else) instead of working with all recent graduates. Also, the hours at mid-size are a lot better than big 4 as people like you and me may need time for family or house project or housework. Just my opinions.

@@CPACareerPaths I am very excited to hear everything you said about the mid size firms. Those were my main concerns; pay, hours, and promotion. I was terrified of what I hear about big 4, but how it would look in my resume seems very appealing too. I've only worked for small companies, so I always wondered what it's like to work for a big company/ firms. I definitely like all the points you made about the mid size firms though.

Can Accountant work in Mergers and acquisition

Yes. Many public accounting firms in medium-big sizes are recruiting for this position. You will learn a lot more in public accounting. There are many companies just focusing on mergers and acquisitions as well. These companies do recruit accountants.
