Monster Hunter Wilds Might Have the same HUGE Problem as World and Rise

  • With Monster Hunter Wilds Release date set for 2025, I want to warn a lot of the newer players and remind veterans of the direction the franchise has been going in, and how the base launch versions of Monster Hunter Games tend to be with number of monsters, mechanics, locales, and how they've slowly been adopting a live service model leading to some potential complications for the release of Wilds and what might happen with it.

I don't really see this as a problem. Capcom doesn't ask you for anything extra for what they add to the game except the actual expansion packs (Iceborne, Sunbreak). There are actual games that come out unfinished and then there are games like MHW that come out strong and end up better by the end of its lifespan. Of course, the finished product will be better but this is what many games are doing, not just MH. Hell, even Elden Ring is doing it but that doesn't mean it's a problem. The people want more and the devs/publisher are in a position to provide. We have much worse going on in the industry for this to be considered a problem. No hate, just my 2 cents.

Its worth noting that World and Rise had to rework all the existing monster skeletons and thats why World and even Iceborne is lacking in enemy variety (and why most monsters used Flying Wyvern and Brute Wyvern skeletons), Rise added most of the old skeletons that were missing in World and moved on to RE Engine, as of now theres just a handful of missing skeletons and most of those were used very few times like Snake Wyvern and Neopterons (and could return in Wilds)

    • @AkantorCZ
      @AkantorCZ หลายเดือนก่อน +10

On top of that they moved to completely new engine. Which is no easy task from technical stand point. In this regard, the Wilds could do better since it most likely continue on RE engine. Saying that, I believe the Wilds will attempt to create true open world which might bring new technical challeges, so I rather keep my expectations low.

Yeah this was my biggest concern. World got a SHIT TON of new fans in the last few months, and I have a bad feeling they are gonna hate Wilds because every monster hunter has done this. Tri to 3U? 4 to 4U? World to Iceborne? Rise to Sunbreak? Its always been live service before we had a word for it.
But World and Rise got multiple new (or returning) monsters within a mere few months. So it's not like the game stays small. You usually get another 5 to 8 monsters through free updates and then the "G" DLC like Iceborne or Sunbreak bring a SHIT TON more.
I personally prefer this model, because it gives me a reason to come back more than just once when a new expansion drops.

However, their games have slowly been getting more and more monetized (just look at the list of DLC you can find on Monster hunter, Resident evil and Dragons dogma 2 steam pages). And right now they are not really intrusive in any way, other than the fact that players can see which furnitures they are missing out on in World (in game) for example. Street fighter 6 too is quite badly monetized from my understanding.

The issue (as someone who has played monster hunter for a very long time), is that monster hunter is a PVE game series with a player base focused on chasing the meta. FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE, it is very smart to drop feed content. Why? Because MOST players will not fight monsters multiple times, unless 1) their rewards feels useful or 2) the armor/weapon you craft from them is more powerful/useful.
    YOU HAVE TWO USE CASES
    1) You release everything at once: the player may “hit walls”, but will eventually hit endgame and tend to “grind” the monsters that give the best rewards. That gives most quests a “one and done” exposure
    2) You release content over time:
The meta will constantly change. You will grind to endgame, repeatedly kill the most powerful monster for a week, get a new more powerful monster, repeat.
The difference? You may take 50 hours to finish all the content if it was all there, but then you may take 100 hours because you grinded each update 10 hours a piece with friends.
The goal IMO in their eyes is to prolong your duration in the game, keep you happy, but ultimately have you there a long time so you can spend money in the shop due to time commitment.
Do I agree with it? F*** no. I love playing mhgu because it has so much content just sitting there waiting, but I was okay with stepping away from the game between updates and I think that’s a healthier approach.
They’ll continue the live service model because they can prolong player engagement and keep the shop dangling in front of us as each update allows for trailers revealing the new paid dlc items (they went hard with the advertising in mhrise sunbreak with having NPCs reveal the content as a way to engage players further with the shop).
It’s disgusting in my opinion, but it’s business.

it hasn't gone away since but now it's with the updates, chasing the live service trend. this didn't come from nothing in World.
i hate the meta mentality too, screw the few toxic players that wine about having to follow it. i just want to make my own wacky builds for creativity's sake. that said, this community overall is much better than most games with the community problems. the gap is closing, sure but it's still there.

    @werecoth หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Monster Hunter since the start, always releases a base version of the game and then an expanded version a year later with G- Rank, new monsters an gameplay adjustments and changes.
World was an especially big hardware jump that required the rebuilding of the Monster's skeletons and thus took a lot more work to implement over rolling previous monsters forward and adding new aspects. It took a hit on Worlds Monster count and Variety that even Iceborne didn't completely overcome. They did also add a bunch of other detailed aspects as well with ecology and the truly rich environments.
Wilds on the other hand, though likely ambitious in many new ways, does have the advantage of having 2 games release before it in the same engine so it can build upon them like games before World did. It indeed likely won't have as much as an expanded Monster Hunter entry at Launch, yet it will likely be in a stronger place than World at Launch and even Rise, as Rise was the game most impacted by the Covid times.
Aside from their expansion model, monster hunter has always been a game with a somewhat "live service" aspect though it has become more involved. Yet event quests being added regularly after launch has been there since near the start.

I did not have any prior knowledge of the game before I started playing it (I just bought the game because it was on sale on steam and I was shocked by how enjoyable the game is and I felt stupid for not playing it earlier). I'm kind of disappointed by the possibility of us getting an unfinished game or just a game with few monsters on release but regardless of what we get I will still play Wilds till the end as long as they roll out updates. Theres a lot of weapons for me to go and get so maybe Ill do that while waiting for updates to come. Man, I hope it's big, and there is a hard/struggle mode or something, but you're probably right. I played Freedom 1 and Unite as a kid and absolutely adored them, but I couldn't afford the switch to Nintendo. I wasn't able to play again until World released and man what a let down. I put in nearly 1000 hours into each of them, and by the time the Freedom Unite released, I still wasn't donw with Freedom 1 or 2. And I never even beat either of the games. I literally never met anyone who had ever seen a Fatalis, let alone killed one. lol
So to go from those expectation of MH being this MASSIVE adventure to MHW's tiny roster and extreme casualization was depressing. I beat everything in about a week after release, and it only took maybe 50-60 hours to beat everything, my worldview of what MH was completely shattered. It was such an easy empty waste of time. Then being told that I needed to wait months for another monster to release, and then just beating it was beyond deflating.
But Freedom 1 was an expansion of G which was an expansion of MH1 and second Gen was an expansion of 1st, so a lot of my perspective was formed from experiencing games that released with baked in expansions, and I would probably have a different expectation if I started with MH1 or Tri. World and Rise were very disappointing to me but I still want to love this series, hoping Wilds is something special.

Ok MHGU when I played it after MHW felt waay too much, I wanted to enjoy hunting each monster but the knowledge that hey your in LR everything you do here is pointless made ot hard to enjoy, I was burned out halfway through HR never reached GR, there's so many monsters but continuesly grinding monsters as if I was playing MHW planning to get all gear was extremely tiresome. I love the periodic release of content in MH not all games only MH, It gives you time to enjoy each content to the full before moving on to the next, it keeps the game alive, it gives breaks to play other games but then comeback later, I don't know I maybe nostalgic about my first playthrough of MHW and the two year time period I spent playing that game until Fatalis, it was akways exciting the seasonal events the excitement of the new monsters dropping each few months the speculations all of it it was a fun journey, I'm all for the Periodic releases, the player base is always chasing the Meta and to have all content released at once would make most of the game pointless, who would hunt deviljo when SafiJiva is around? Who would hunt Safijiva when Alatreon is atound? Who cares about Elder dragons when Fatalis is there to hunt? The periodic release helps alot by constantly changing the meta and oeople spending time doing every part and enjoying it before moving to the next thing, I just hope they tone down the microtransactions, I hope they learned something from DD2 release, otherwise the periodic release of DLC content is completely fine for me, honestly it would be very overwhelming if the entirety of MHW/Iceborne released at once. MH is a grinding game you hunt monsters 10s of times if not more, so to have all that grinding without pacing it over a period of time is a bit much. Also it helps by making people hunt together.
Also, take care of yourself man don't let the negativity get to you.

    Very good video.
I've been playing MH since Freedom Unite and I've been watching this change from the games having everything at once vs the new style of live service that 5th Gen brought in. I definitely see where you're coming from that World isn't remembered for its launch (which had a lot of problems) and that Rise, too, got much better over time. I think you're right and that Wilds probably IS going to feel more like World and Tri did. It is, after all, the official Monster Hunter 6. The first of a new kind of MH.
One thing I will say that serves the new Title Update trend really well is that it's always accompanied by really fun marketing and I don't think that's as appreciated as it should be. They always start with the roadmaps to tell you what's coming to get the taste buds primed but, man, I have to say it. THE TRAILERS that they produce for the title updates are so hype.
They remind me of Monster Hunter Frontier back in the day. Every time there was a big update with a new Monster, locale and/or gameplay mechanic there was always a cool teaser done for it that showed off the new music ( which nearly always slapped ) to go with it. It was so amazing because this was me in high school getting pumped up and hype FOR A GAME I COULDN'T EVEN PLAY. That's powerful.
I think Monster Hunter going in this direction is for the better and everyone who's disappointed with the launch version of the game needs to put their seatbelt on like us vets and realize they're just getting started.
As nice as it was to get MH4U complete with everything in it so you never have to feel like it ends... Well, it DOES end. All of the DLC was event quests featuring content that already exists in the game but tweaked for fun new experiences, but that WAS IT. With these new MH games, the party doesn't stop until they're just flat out making a new game.

I already thought rise could be unfinished before it released, because it was developed during the pandemic. I gotta say that I disagree with the point that the new mh games have been unfinished. I think that (except for rise) there always was a way to keep you going until the next major update. In world there was deco farming for your builds before kulve taroth, in iceborne there were the guiding lands were you could augment your weapons and in sunbreak there were anomaly quests to max out your weapons for your build, so there was always a way to grind and try new sets until the next update dropped to grind more new sets and new endgame mechanics and to try out your builds on new challenges. I think the monsters and new endgame mechanics have been put in title updates to fill the dry gap between a game and his expansion or between a expansion and the next game and i would say thats a good thing because as I already mentioned it fills the gap between games and expansions, it keeps you hyped for the game, it doesnt overwelm new players with to much to check out after the end of the story and most impotantly they dont use this system to scam money out of people by charging extra money. But I still would say that the game is complete with the release of the base expansion. Just because there are many big title updates released after doesnt mean that the game is incomplete without them it just means that they are big content drops. You always have something to do with the endgame that was already implemented into the game and setbuilding. I also think that its kinda unfair to compare the newer games with the older ones in terms of monster quantity. The devs dont put less monsters in their games because they are lazy or sth. Its just much more work required for things like balancing, monster animations, graphics, cutscenes, new combat mechanics, more details in hub or areas etc. that the old games did not or the devs just didnt do, like in the old games monsters didnt need animations to traverse the area, they just popped in because of the loading screens between areas. I honestly much prefer this system as long as it stays like it was in world, iceborne and sunbreak. Also i wouldnt want to have g-rank/masterrank in the base game.I would rather have a game with complete content +free title updates and a gigantic expansion that i would pay extra for +again new free title updates that has a life time of around 3 years with downtime between the last base game title update and the expansion to come out every like 3 years instead of one big game that releases every like 5 years.
Btw Yes base narwa was in the base game and fun fact mh4u also had title updates with gold rathian, silver rathalos and a unique version of crimson fatalis being unlocked a while after release.
Even tough I understand what you meant with new players could think wilds will be unfinished I gotta say that I dont think so, because there were new players in world who didnt said it had not enough content and same with iceborne and sunbreak and even though i understand how wilds will probably bring the biggest number of new players to the series i also think that the
monster hunter devs always brought us games wich were full of quality content without title updates. Well besides base rise of course
Great vid btw! Keep it up man👍

Tbh the only thing Im worried about is if the best sets in Wilds will be sets that use the complete skills or even over-clocked skills like in World/Iceborne or if it will be more similar to Rise/Sunbreak where you get better outcomes of having like 5 skills at level 1 for their conditionals. I much prefer it when specialisation or maxing a skill out gives you the most value.
Other than that though, I'm not very bothered by the idea that the game might take time to reach its endgame state. My friends and I usually only get the weekends to play due to timezone/life-schedule differences. I much prefer being able to rotate between games for a few weeks whenever they get new updates. Like in a few days Helldivers 2 get a new patch with new gear so I'll play that for a week or two and then another game might get an update and I go onto that.
Regardless of my opinions, great video. Enjoyed it, informative. Cheers

I just have to gripe, but World had 30 monsters at launch lol. Zorah and the variants definitely count. Separate hunts and armor sets.
And yeah it could be deemed light on content but i think its enough to still be a complete experience. The title updates outside deviljho and kulve were collabs that were fun and different.
I like this approach to the games with title updates. as you said coming together for events and getting new gear is fun. Iceborne did this really well and outside maybe volcanic and tundra zones it felt like pure additional content.
Even if Wilds mirrors World in content ill be happy.
I think sometimes less is more, as long as the monsters are done well and the gear is good
    cheers

This is not unique to Capcom. The internet changed the way games release. Bethesda, EA, CD Project Red all the Borderlands, Witchers and Cyberpunks of the world release unfinished. In some cases (like anthem or ME:Andromeda) the games get cancelled before they are complete.

A good example of this practice is the Dragon Resistance stat in MHW. Before Deviljho, that stat was completely useless since that were no monsters that dealt Dragon damage, aside from (I believe) some Xeno'jiiva's attacks. It just shows how unfinished the game was.

Monster Hunter games have always started with just the base game (low and high rank), with expansions happening a year later as separate games. Tri and 3 Ultimate, Generations and Generations Ultimate. It was only until 5th generation where the expansions were treated as actual expansions rather than separate games. So Wilds having G/Master rank right at the start, yeah it's not happening. lol

I'm still struggling with the fact that I never made it to the "finished" version of Rise. The missing ending of the base game made me quite angry. I did return for Sunbreak, but I simply stopped playing halfway through the update timeline. While I think that some of it has to do with the mechanics of Rise, maybe the live service nature of the game also played a role.
With World I don't really remember that kind of disappointment, even though I also played during its launch. But maybe that's because I've been away from the series for almost three generations.
What I expect from Wilds is that it doesn't feel like an unfinished game, but maybe that's inevitable idk...

How the hell did you expect them to have as many monsters as MH4U or GU. This is the largest graphical leap the franchise ver had they had to make the models completely from scratch, and the fact the models were all extremely detailed and required more effort to craft then past gens along with the fact they had significantly more animations for immersion. The fact that we got 71 monsters by the end of its development is bloody amazing and is only 3 monsters of MH4U

As long as the initial release is at least 50 hours of content with a roadmap of updates, it's fine. Capcom has delivered on their promises in the past, no reason to doubt them now.
For me, the real issue with Wilds is the RE Engine. DD2 has shown very clearly how poorly optimized it was for an open world game.

I played World around a year from when it was released and thought it was great. I didn't really have too much expectations from then but I was plenty satisfied with just the base game... even just playing it until the ending was great, then I got to the end game contents and events (only a few were actually newly released, and some haven't been released).
Around the time I couldn't play anymore, Iceborne was released and I never got to play it since I didn't have my own PC... funnily, Iceborne had mixed reviews at the time (it's easy to imagine how the launch was + all the talk about the clutch claw) but I still wanted to play it since World was amazing from my pov. Though as I said, I never got to play it.
I now play Rise/Sunbreak and I got exposed to the actual end game loop. Weirdly enough, I still think World (base game, but not launch ver.) is amazing in comparison even though there's not as much content in it... and somehow I don't get the same feeling from playing Rise/Sunbreak, if Rise didn't have a great loop and lots of content to go through then I probably wouldn't be playing it.
I'm experiencing World/Iceborne vicariously through streams and videos for now. And yeah, even just the graphics quality is marginally better than how I played it back then on a mix of medium/high settings.
I'm just hoping Wilds retains World's feel. Cuz for me, I definitely can't play it on launch. I don't even have a PC that can run World rn.

World is definitely a superior experience, no wonder tons of Rise players moved back to World. World's maps feel like living ecosystems, the combat is more technical and varied (no spam wirebug counter to win nonsense like in Rise), animations feel more weighty and satisfying, I just didnt enjoy Iceborne as much because of the introduction of the clutch claw but still enjoyed it way more than the entirety of Rise/Sunbreak.

While Monster Hunter isn't my cup of tea, I still appreciate the game for what it offers other players who do like it. However, I also think that its important to add some context, which I would like to add into the discussion Capcom's recently released game, Dragon's Dogma 2. As a long time DD fan, I felt disappointed with Dragon's Dogma 2 (DD2) and felt it was incomplete & lacking. Sure, the graphics looked great, but so much of the game was a step backwards. All the caves (mini dungeons) looked identical, you were fighting the exact same monsters time & time again, the map while bigger was just a series of zig-zagging paths, and the end game content was boring. And I could go on & on. There is speculation that there will be DLC that adds much needed new monsters, new bosses, etc. But I feel that much of this should have been in the main game, as the game was so bare bones & generic that it felt like content was purposefully cut so as to add to future DLC. Now keep in mind that this is the same Publisher, Capcom.
Some might say that even Dragon's Dogma 1 had extra content added later on that made it a much better game, and they would be correct. But keep in mind that the added content for DD1 was said by the lead creator that the original was supposed to have the added content in it but Capcom made them rush the game out. Do you see a pattern yet?
Don't get me wrong, as I like it when additional content is created to extend the life of a game, but there is a difference between adding new content & cutting content so as to add later for a fee.

DD2 is the definition of an unfinished game. I won't touch it until it's on a deep deep sale, and I'm one of the people who have been waiting for a sequel since Dark Arisen originally dropped. Outside of Devil May Cry or maybe Street Fighter, everything from Capcom is best played a year later.

I think Capcoms track record speaks for itself and that everything you have said here cimes from a place of truth. I also love these games and Worlds was my first MH title I tried and was instantly hooked. I do have high hopes for the new title, but Im still holding the reins on my excitement for sure. How you can have such a large catalogue of monsters to fight and not be able to, day one, give 70/80 monsters would be quite surprising. Time will definitly tell. Keep on keeping on Dude. so make a video on a game that is very much still in development and track record from what games up to MH 4 were complete including funny non sequel games, so that leaves World and Rise, should mention this game was started before Iceborne released for World, so about 6 years ago, also as they put it they don't have components even in the game yet and the game may not be set to release till later next year like summer or fall and its May when this video launched, also the game is actually in a pretty good state just needs stuff like armor added and the more minor details to add some of the cuter side of MH. Remember Monster Hunter launched on PS2 in fact they are good at developing for both hand held and consoles and make good ports, I have 0 clue how long MH world was in development the fact that it was indeed a complete game despite not having master rank. also we have seen a handful of monsters and one location which is already 2x local map size in World and has unlockable areas as you progress.

Its worth noting that rise released on the 2020 covid year and it most definitely released unfinished. Rise has been the only unfinished game. The melding QOL in rise sunbreak is an example of it.

What i see happening is wilds coming out with a finish story and light end game. Almost as if they are testing the waters if what they have going on with the game weather its gameplay mechanics environment etc. As the updates come in we’ll see added monsters and tweaks such as nerfs, buffs, qol and changes they feel like they have to make based on what they tested with initial launch and just like what they have always done they add the “ultimate” “grank” “master rank” version of the game where they will again try new ideas out with a new complete story followed by updates of new monsters, tweaks, qol, buffs and nerfs and ideas they could try for the next game

This is all probably true, but honestly? I think it's for the best that Capcom will release updates slowly overtime. One of the main selling points and the reason I love the series is the constant grind. Let's say Day 1 of Rise's release in early 2021 that we have EVERYTHING that was added via updates all the way till the Primordial Malzeno who was released near the end of 2023. Do you think the game would be better for it? People would just focus on getting to endgame and making the "meta" builds that can't be improved upon and stop playing because there is nothing left to grind for. That's why I stopped, no mountain left to climb. But that's after 3 years and 2000+ hours of gameplay.

honestly, this isn't really a problem for the game. any game that's as big as Monster Hunter, whether the game itself or the player base, is going to take time to finish. it's common for games to come out unfinished but decently playable and enjoyable. Wilds has to come out after World and Rise, those were not small/shallow games. Honestly, I'd be a little bit suspicious if Wilds didn't come out unfinished. The problem is (I don't have any other word to describe it) stupid folks who dont take a moment to think about the game and what could be happening with its development. Not only will Wilds probably be unfinished and updated upon release, but, looking at the track record, it will also have a DLC that double the amount of playtime.
I do feel like, however, this video is a good warning to the new players who might whine about the game being unfinished. But then again, looking at World and Rise, there's no way those two games could come out without needing updates or endgame content. I only started World a year ago, rise half a year, and even I can tell there must have been a lot that was added later.

Game is not close to releasing yet. Only monster hunter titles that were released in unfinished state or with just low content were Tri and Rise which both have reasons for it. Tri was low on content since underwater combat took too much resources to make. Rise was low on content since it was developed during the pandemic. All other MH titles have been shipped in a good state content wise. And even if it launches with fewer monsters than world did, it will still get title updates and eventually its own G-Rank dlc. Even if other capcom franchises may be badly handled, I have never been disappointed in MH game content wise. (Maybe tri but that had underwater combat which I liked :D).

I expect extra content to be implemented as the game lives on, but i do not expect another "Rise release" incident

That's the positive outlook. The realistic outlook based on Capcom's track record says otherwise, though.

I think Rise had a lot of things before sunrise almost as much as mhworld before iceborne. Ofcourse MHW had master rank before iceborne but rise is just midtier game before the real big game so can't expect too much.

As long as the game comes with an actual ending this time... (RISE COUGH COUGH) I think they can make the post game content work, they did it decently with world, albeit a tad bit too mmo fomo feeling, and each even was a slow power creep from the last. the events did feel a bit power creep esk though, like lunastras stuff was decent, but brachys was the best of the best, then alatreon came out and shat on so many players because they only ran stat sticks and not element. Then fatalis just says FU to balance.
Also the sheets for monsters is pretty wrong.
Base world had Teostra and the colored raths. Rises first update (version 2.0) added in the elder dragon trio teo, kush, and chameleos and little people knew, HR was locked until that point at HR40, bazel was sneakily added, apex diablos and rathalos were added here as well in rampages. So by that logic, rathian, mizutsune and arzuros were in base rise.

I get your trying to let people know how content rolls out for mh but idk why you sound so negative lol. Like “oh 1 month after launch they added all these monsters! 😡 “ it’s a pretty great system imo. Most people are gonna be overwhelmed anyway. There’s 14 fleshed out weapons to figure out what you want to use

Monster Hunter is not a live service. It that would be the case, there would be no Rise/Sunbreak/Wilds. Instead there would MHW with new updates.

      False
Live service doesnt inherently mean eternal development

You can have different definitions for Live Service but this ain't it. This implies that Destiny and Destiny 2 aren't live service games because Destiny 3 (very probably) is coming.

    • @AkantorCZ
      @AkantorCZ หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Mugthief With a similar logic you could say the BG3 is a live service as well because the game's content being updated past release. I'm translating live service as a long term support for the game that generates income to keep the game running. I would at least expect that something called service requires you to have an online account. MH so far has strictly defined development lifecycles and it's a game that doesn't require you to be online. How can you call something like that a 'Live' 'Service'?

    • @Mugthief
      @Mugthief  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@AkantorCZ Because BG3 isn't lacking anywhere from 20 to 35% of it's content, and most of it's endgame, including it's ending, behind you being online. Monster Hunter World and Rise do.

    • @AkantorCZ
      @AkantorCZ หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Mugthief I disagree with MHW lacking content at release. It had some issues with monster variety in the end game, bacause only elder dragons offered top deco rewards. But I wouldn't call the game unfinished. On the other hand, it was probably the closest thing to live service game (as I understand it) with its siege / seasonal events.
However I can agree the Rise was rushed and unfinished. Pandemic etc. And Sunbreak was also kind of being finished over time. Still MH titles always offered some kind of bonus content in form of event quests or collaborations. And now it's all considered unfinished content?
I believe the development of MH is shaped by the community more than you would think, e.g. Fatalis wasn't initially planned to be implemented, PC port of Rise wasn't planned, etc. I personally wouldn't mind if MH Wilds would turns into live service game. But at the same time the generational development life cycles had proven to be quite a good approch to test new ideas and inovations. Either way I hope MH Wild will be a great game.

9:15 this has nothing to do with your video. But man you are bad with the longsword in mh world. You have a counter and chooses not to use it on the most telegraph move possible.
11:57 she was but only in base form. Her almother form was add with the patch that gave us the ending, the last one with crimson glow valstrax. Still remember beating the game and getting a goddamn iou from capcom

It's a fair message, but one that might be needed closer to the game's release once the hype machine takes over. I don't think the model they have going for the series is technically bad, but you're right that i might catch players off guard if they're only used to jumping into these games when they're 'completed', or even the veterans who prefer a specific, completed experience.
I think Capcom has an interesting predicament when it comes to this model:
On one hand, it's boring/frustrating to lose mechanics and abilities between games, essentially going through a starting over process that requires months of waiting for the patches.
On the other, this is kind of the expected standard with standalone game releases that in order to attract new players; everyone has to be 'onboarded' from the start again. And to get all of the added systems and mechanics into the game takes time to adapt to how the game is playing.
If MH were an MMO, this wouldn't be as much of a problem, since expansions could keep building or iterating on the game, and I think in a lot of ways, MH could be viewed as an MMO-lite with how this model functions.
The problem is perceptions of how MH is supposed to function. I think a lot of people expect the MMO-style continuations of complex mechanics and systems between games, even though Capcom treats them as more traditional standalone game releases.

I'm happy just saying "I told you so" once the hype begins, but I'd rather the people that watch this today don't get swept up in the hype expecting the game to be something it won't. If I need to repeat it in 6 months, I just...will, I guess.
