I came to your channel years ago because of the Oliver’s. We had all IH and then Case IH equipment. What I very much like is the history lesson behind the equipment. You were like it’s been 13 minutes, I need to get to work, I was like just keep talking, this is interesting as hell.
Our preferred machine shop is C&P Machine in Fort Wayne, Indiana. We have used them for years with good results. They just did a set of 5.4 Ford heads for us in less than a week. Thanks for the video.
You definitely made the right call on not bringing the motor to vandykes in Fremont. When Vandykes owned it was a dam good shop but now not so much. Guy that runs it is part of the farm stock tractor pullers and I'd heard he brought his motors to somebody else to get it to make power and stay together🤣. Used to be a good shop at Hesperia automotive north of Fremont but all the old guys retired and its run by a bunch of newbies learnin now I've heard.
3 of my uncles worked at Oliver in Charles city. To add to what you said they all said the same thing when white motor took over everything went to shit including their tooling which they desperately needed replaced. Said when they started building the 55 series it was extremely common for the machining done to come out wrong due to wore out machining equipment and if it didn’t pass the little amount of quality control they would throw the junk parts back into the foundry and try again. And it was done way more than what’s normal. Always exciting to watch someone rebuild motors tho lol
They had an entirely new assembly line made for the corporate program. A company just north of here built it. They were to the point they were ready to start hauling parts to Charles city. When they killed the corporate tractor program they just scrapped the new line.

Thanks for the video, glad you are getting started on this one. the machine shop things getting bad to find one let alone a good one, that last Perk I did they got 7/8ths of the valve springs the right way up when they rebuilt the head and you could see it was wrong and they missed it ! But I got no real choice it's about the only one within a days drive each way taking and picking up stuff. I'm wondering if you got chance now if it might be worth sacrificing a gasket and pull that hyd top and find out. It's probably not going to get better, and after making that bracket and doing the motor for planting you'll be sick if it $#!ts the bed planting when you might already be pushed for time with weather and other work. The kid with the girl needs to get his priority's right or go work in walmart 40 hours a week. After a 10 year relationship ended I had the best summer ever working without having to think I need to be rushing to fix this or hope the phone don't go with a service call and I'm supposed to be someplace else with her. I even ended up driving a combine for one repair customer when he was short a guy for a couple days, That was fun and I'd of never had chance the last 10 years. I'll do more this coming harvest, he's already asked and raised the pay. Take care
@@TheJohndeere466 Yeah there are some out there squatch 235 has a Cat from a restoration project on his channel he calls the "Beer can motor" I picked up a Fordson that broke a cam follower, but on pulling the rocker cover I found where 2 head bolts go through they broke the bolt hole sides out about 2" deep. They milled the broke places out bigger diameter and deeper and brazed in 2 sleeves to hold the head bolts. I'd love to know what they did to that head that's 4" thick to bust the 2 holes out that are 1.5" apart ! There is some more stuff I've seen not to far in makes me question the rest and want to scrap that motor instead of rebuilding it as well.
Lifting the engine with the forklift reminds me at work one of super heavy press electric Rousell brand old unit needed to be moved. I herd something crash in the shop. Here when my coworker picked it up it toppled over from not pick it up in the right place. Shields were bent but straighten. An still works!

Are you going to have the injection pump rebuilt? The 4320 that we have has a stanadyne pump similar to that one and I had it rebuilt and turned up. There was all sorts of problems with it, and it would barely run. A fresh rebuild fixed that.
So now you have this but tall tower of hard to control shit. But you still didn’t answer the question. What do you do in the spots where the ratchet barely fits? Meaning, you don’t have any head room…
My initial comment was merely my praise for using an impact wrench to save time and effort. In a situation where limited space requires it, I would use the appropriate hand tool.
It is a long shot but could there be an internal breather somewhere that oil could escape from the hydraulics to the rear end because in use hydraulic oil is likely to get much hotter and tgherefore thinner or in some cases froth up with increased volume? Regarding the positioning of the planter controls / monitor when your steering do you like to steer with your front wheel on top of the previous wheel mark or perhaps use a centre line view down the bonnet? Linked to this, which tractor do you have in mind to use on your bigger sprayer. I know in the long term you have previously said that you plan to use the most recently aquired cabbed tractor to haul it once repaired. I was thinking a) you might want think about a universal mount for the controls of both machines and b) if using it to pull the sprayer the position you were talking about using might block your sight of the rows on the RH side of the tractor when trying to steer between two crop rows. Just a thought. I hope that this repair goes as quickly and smoothly as you would wish but in my experience it rarely does!
Seems like finding anyone to do agricultural engine machine work is pretty tough. Which is crazy because most good engine machine shops are always busy.
How hard is it to find parts, like the 3 speed case parts and others, to find? A peice of conduit mounted to the platform for you harness would be my suggestion and would be a unit when putting the monitor on and taking it off. I grow up with my uncle owning a 60 and an 88 and when bought his 88 at his auction. Then we bought a 1600 and bought we owned 2 1800s at the same time. One with the checkerboard decal and one with the newer trim. I believe one was a series one and the other a series three. I loved the Olivers. Then we could not get, I believe a 1955 and my dad bought a 1468 IHC. After that he went red because our local Oliver dealer retired and the IHC dealer took care of my dad as good as the Oliver dealer did and the rest is history. I did love the Olivers except the oil that was always on the platform of the 88. The rear high level oil was not cloudy, was it?
Looking good and I hear ya at 7:20 . We try to keep machine shop work to a minimal unless it's truly needed . May have missed it in the video but what was wrong with the 310 , using oil or excessive blow by ? Keep up the great work !
Eager to see how this all works out. My 1950T still has the 6 point rod bolts too, so a rebuild is in my future plans. Hope you can find your injector pump parts. I just rebuilt mine on my 1855 a month ago and the shop said parts were getting hard to find. Also curious if you had a part number for the turbo you put on your 1955? I called and called and searched and searched and ended up only finding Chinese cheapo replacement turbos.
I am considering buying a 1855 but I don’t now what is wrong but should I purchase it. It was ran on a hog farm so I know it was beat pretty bad and the top half of the motor is out of it. I don’t know the hours.
I don’t know what to tell you. We tried everything the first time we pulled it. There is no angle at which that engine comes out without binding between the rear engine mounts and the chain coupler first. It ain’t like this is our first rodeo.
As much as I enjoy watching you run this old iron, it really kills me hearing the erosion of mechanical skills in this country. There are good well paying jobs in the trades, you will not be rich but you certainly will be comfortable. It is just as bad here in the Northeast.
Good video. Companies trying to save cost at all costs rarely make good decisions. Another example of this is British Leyland of the 1970s, and how the parts bin special car out competed their "bold vision of the future". I find it strange that they used the 310 on the 1750 and the 1950t, but the 1850 has a Perkins 354. If they were comfortable with using the 310 in the t, why not the 1850. Any thoughts? Thinking about it some more. Massey Ferguson had the 600 series where 5 tractors had 4 unique engine models and but the two that did share an engine, one was turbo, the other was not. Crazy eh?

The dash mount for a 1850 is the same as a 1750/1800, I believe you are correct anout the T's being the only ones with that guesset so low. Your hydraulic leak into the rear end could also be coming from the seals for the dtaft control rod that goes through the pan. Where did you get your engine stand from, is it home made?? I need to either build one or find something heavy duty enough that will hold a diesel engine.
@@Oliver66FarmBoy I did not realize the T had external draft sensing, mine has the catIII hitch I have never used the tractor bought it knowing it had a bed engine. I did look at my 1600 dash this morning it has the lower guesset. I think those are different because of shaft for the pedals.
My 1650 is going in to the shop this weekend. I was taking out hay with it and don't know what happened to it I jumped off of it to close the gate and got back on it as soon as I pushed the clutch in it wouldn't move
It sucks your go to guy had to retire because he couldn't find anyone to work, and that guy that quite because he's gf didn't like him dirty, I'm with ya she would be going down the road, cause he missed out on a great opportunity. But count wait to see everything your gonna do on the old girl

Love the information in this one. Curiosity question, I've read and heard 1950-Ts are kinda known for popping head gaskets. Am I wrong? And if 1950-T's are, is fire ringing it an option? Obviously the engine builder is busy as hell so added work may not be an option. If I'm wrong please enlighten me.
White was one of those companies that looked good on paper but turned all the companies they bought out into shit. Anything with a turbo needs an oil cooler and piston coolers.

I run down the center line of the tractor and there are no monitors or any electronics of any kind for the sprayer.
Call TTP down in Pierceton. See if they have a 310 ready to go.

I’ve never had any issues with parts. They are a little hard right now but that’s due to the current government manufactured “supply chain” issues.

Hard to find a shop that does GOOD work on something with close tolerances Farm Boy.

Make sure to use Arrow pistons.
The Reliance pistons simply do not work in Waukesha diesels

It was never supposed to be built. It was produced as a cost cutting measure because the Detroit was deemed to expensive.

It has external draft sensing. It doesn’t have the rod through the sump pan. And we made the stand.

They were known for breaking clutch fingers. There was a service bulletin about it. Could be the problem.
Not always true. My buddy had one break in his 1655 and it wedged the pressure plate open.

All of the 310 turbos were known for head gasket failures. They had poor quality control on the machining.
He would have failed at it anyway.
