  • Just a hobbyist and tinkerer modding a TI83+. Nothing to see here.
    2 different display boards were shown, but the pins are just off by 1.
    I'm not sure, but I might be going too fast in some areas. Let me know in the comments so I can adjust for later videos. THANKS!

    I did this with my TI-82 too. Nice that I can see it clearer, but two downsides. I need to peel of the silver reflective sticker of in order to stick the EL panel in, not so ambiemt light friendly. Also EL panel use 60+ VAC to drive it, sucks a lot of battery juice. Nevertheless it still gave me really consistent backlight.

    Hey Pixel, another great video! I've really enjoyed checking out your channel over the past couple of days. My only suggestion is to leave the text up on the screen longer (for slow readers like me) or even stop the video, throw the text up, and leave it up for several seconds before resuming. I find myself pausing to read then going back to see what you are doing. Your editing is really good. I found out very quickly that I don't have the patience for creating engaging content. You are doing amazing. Keep this up and your channel will take off. Question: how much can you get for your modded calculator? Can you do a similar mod to an original gameboy?

    • @PixelMaker04
      @PixelMaker04  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Regarding the text, that's what I was thinking but would have had to make several changes to an already long editing time, so I decided to let the comments let me know. I haven't done any price checks for a modded calc. I just did these just for fun and experimentation. And yes. The original gameboy has a similar mod you can get for it. the removal of the reflective film is more troublesome with those. I did one myself along with an aftermarket shell for it. I also installed a backlight kit to 2 gameboy pockets.

    Awesome mod. Really want to attempt this myself!
    This should be possible with pretty much the same steps on a TI-89/Titanium, right?

    • @PixelMaker04
      @PixelMaker04  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do have an older 89 as well as a Titanium in my collection. One way to find out. I was going to try it on a TI86 that had horizontal lines, but I ended up botching the ribbon cable on that one while trying to fix the lines. Oh well. It's for parts now I guess. But essentially yes as long as the LCD enable and ground lines can be found as well as getting the screen's reflective layer off the back of it.

    • @thekojac

      @@PixelMaker04 Out of curiosity, I just opened up my 89 Titanium to have a look. Unfortunately, the screen is connected to the motherboard with two different ribbon cables. This means I can't flip up the screen to remove the metal backplate, as those flat ribbon cables aren't going anywhere without destroying them.
      Oh well, was worth a shot!

    • @PixelMaker04
      @PixelMaker04  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have one open for repair right now. It will be doable if you don't mind some fiddly soldering in the smaller, side ribbon cable. I'll be trying to get a few more "for parts or repair" TI89 Titaniums in to test this theory.

      @@PixelMaker04 Have you ever considered doing a small run of something like this in a crowd funding site and watching it rain?
      There's almost certainly an untapped niche market for something like this.

    • @PixelMaker04
      @PixelMaker04  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TAGMedia7 Yes and no. I had thought of doing the mod on the colored TI83+ that are floating around (translucent green, translucent blue, translucent purple, translucent blue but more blue, baby blue, and there's a rare for the U.S. pink and translucent blue I was able to get from a French seller for my personal collection). I've got my TI83+ SE on ebay for a little while just to see how it goes. Priced to what I think is fair if not a bit low for product, parts, and labor.

    Hi. It looks amazing, but won't that mod drain the batteries pretty fast?

    • @PixelMaker04
      @PixelMaker04  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't done a time study with it, but like most other devices that have a backlight it will increase the battery usage. Possibly only allowing around 75-80% of total work time. Again, I haven't done any comparison so this is just my guess.

    Hey Pixel, I've been into TI programing for a number of years now. I was wondering if you ever thought of doing programing tutorials for TI-Basic?

    • @PixelMaker04
      @PixelMaker04  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have and I've done some type-in programs on my retro computers before on twitch, which I need to get back on. That would depend if you're referring to the TI graphing calculators or their home computer - the TI99/4a from the late 70s. I have more experience on the TI83+ as that was the one I had during high school and I am still very much a novice. However! I do have one of the TI presenter TV display devices for the TI83+ Silver. I do want to get another one of those calcs with the presenter connection and backlight one it to be able to use that for some things. If there is enough interest I can do a few entry-level basic tutorials. If anything it would be to see how it goes as I do enjoy sharing my knowledge to those who are interested and I'm not afraid to learn new things. It could be one of those step-by-step online tutorials and troubleshooting sessions similar to how I've done to the type-in programs one some of my older twitch streams. I've got connectivity for the presenter for the TI83+, TI84+, TI92, and voyage200 for those that are curious of what I can get plugged in.

      @@PixelMaker04 wow! I didn’t know about those larger TI products. I would just some simple advice on programming on the TI-83 plus. I’m trying to program the game Oregon Trail (or at least a simple version)

    • @PixelMaker04
      @PixelMaker04  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For a simple version first thing I can think of is you'll need to have menus to handle your profession, shop, and other selectable options. Next you'll need to use labels to be able to jump around to where you need to. Third will be using variables and strings for your inventory and names. Perhaps use a list for inventory as it will be contained onto one "asset". There is a commodore 64 version that uses a similar process of menus and variables. Having an end point, probably a number in the list variable, and a step count that increments based on the difficulty would be a decent start. having a random number for who gets what illness and who passes would also work out.

    • @swackswack5406
      @swackswack5406 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PixelMaker04 The inventory is what I'm having the biggest issue with. I got the random events and even a way to do the passage of time but the problem is the innovatory and tracking how much oxen, food, parts, etc. the player has.

    • @PixelMaker04
      @PixelMaker04  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Swack Swack Using a list might help out. You can "10->DIM(L1)" to make it have 10 slots or something like that and write and read numbers to it similar to "5->L1(5)". That should be the basic command for the list. i haven't used them in a while since I made my Magic the Gathering life counter programs in basic. Example- L1(1) could be the profession number, L1(2) could be the money, L1(3) could be the oxen number, L1(4) could be the food lb/kg number, etc.
