    Currently 27 and work for USPS for past 3 years now. Looking at going into the reserves just to get some more benefits and honestly the experience. I was told that it would up my federal pension even for USPS. I think I’m gonna give it a shot.

    I joined the Coast Guard as a reservist and just graduated boot camp and I have not reported to my unit yet. So i haven't had the chance to ask them my questions i had during bootcamp. As a reservist, is there a lot of opportunities to go active duty on orders, or pick up deployments, and if so, what does that look like? I really want to do some active duty time and pick up deployments, when i would ask instructors at boot camp, most of em seemed like they didn't know much about the reserve aspect of CG because they're all active duty members. Also, have you ever been on a deployment or on ADOS aside from training? If so, how did you like it?

      Hey I'm going to answer your question with a video because it's going to take a few minutes to answer properly. I agree there aren't enough instructors who know much about the Reserves. I experienced the same thing when I went through.

      I’m interested too.
      I’m currently 31 and interested in joining the Coast Guard reserves, mostly for the experience.
      I own a small business but would like the option to, volunteer to pick up deployments when I’m available for longer durations than just the 2 weekends a month.

    Thank you for this video! I am 27, I have a B.S., and I just got an MBA. I am considering joining the Coast Guard Officer Corps, and I'm curious if Reserve Corps is a viable option for me. What is the process for transforming from a civilian into a reserve officer, and will I suffer for not having active duty experience? I want to attempt to join as a reservist first, so that I can keep my civilian job, and then potentially switch to active duty in a few years depending on if I can be accepted to basic flight school. Any feedback on my plan?

      Reserve Officer Candidate Indoctrination (ROCI pronounced”Rocky”) may be a good course for you. It’s a 2 week “knife and fork” school to train folks to be reserve officers. Call your nearest CG recruiter and tell him your situation and ask about going to “Rocky”. Just tell them a retired Chief sent you.

    I’m pursuing a career as a civilian firefighter, and I’m curious if me being in the reserves will hurt my chances of getting hired as a firefighter due to scheduling conflict. I know that each employer is supposed to honor the reserves schedule and they will, but sure that may deter them from hiring me in the first place? Have you known any civilian firefighters during your time in the reserves and if so, what has been their experience?

    Hi I want to give the reserves a shot. I may have messed up my chances by being a flake. My recruiter set me up for MEPS, and I stayed over night in my hotel. I then got too scared to leave my kids and wife, so left at night. I want to give it another chance. Did I mess up for ever with my recruiter? Any advise would be helpful. Thank you.

    Appreciate your insights. Just graduated college and considering joining the reserves in the near future. How accommodating is the CG in stationing you close to where you work/live? Also wondering if there’s a difference in this regard for enlistment VS officer membership.

    • @CGCareerCentral
      @CGCareerCentral  ปีที่แล้ว

      For the reserve side, the Coast Guard will make every effort to have you within a reasonable commuting distance from home. Keep in mind this relies on how close you are to a station that has openings for your job.

    • @CGCareerCentral
      @CGCareerCentral  ปีที่แล้ว

      Officers tend to have to commute further for their job because as you move higher in ranks, there are less amounts of jobs available.

    Are the benefits worth it? Going reserve, I have a wife and two daughters under 2 yrs old, I don’t really want to go active duty.

      I did a video on this topic a while ago. But here is a good resource that lists the vaccines you'll need at Basic Training. If you have proof that you already received them you won't have to get them again.

    Would the Coast Guard accommodate me studying abroad or doing an internship in another state? I'm headed to a PSU and my understanding is that they're pretty strict on coming to drill. And there aren't many units overseas, so would it be impossible for me to go to Asia / Europe for a quarter or two?

    • @CGCareerCentral
      @CGCareerCentral  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's going to be dependent on your Command. Generally, you can go where you want when you're not drilling, as long as it's a cleared country. But just check with your Command to be sure.

    What do u mean there are times where u don’t get paid but it counts towards retirement? So u don’t get paid in the moment, but u will have a pension that pays even more than if u didn’t work those days u didn’t get paid?

    • @ericte2400
      @ericte2400 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's called IRR-- Individual ready reserves. It's where your still part of the cosst guard, but don't drill at all at your unit, you do get retirement points but no paycheck. Some people use this cause they are going to college full time or have a family situation that requires them to do home alot.

    • @CGCareerCentral
      @CGCareerCentral  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      2 days a month is the standard. Some Commands will allow you to do 3 days (Fri-Sun or Sat-Mon) and then you only go in 8 months a year. Or if something comes up and they need assistance during the week, though generally if that happens they would put you on Active Duty orders.
