Thanxs for showing elusive kefir grains of homesteading vry critical tip to wash wid distill water not wid chlorinated tap water which kills kefir live cultures
Thanks I do exactly like you and have been doing this for over 6 years. But my grains have never been "durable" or rubbery like it seems they should be and not stay above a spoon or even giggle like yours. If I stirred hard like that they would disappear. I still can make kefir by just adding milk to some of the milk with the busted up invisible grains. Thanks I would like some advice or hear from someone who has the same problem. Excellent video
I like it better when it begins to separate... more flavor and a little thicker. Also a good shake will take care of it. My favorite is second ferment peach 🍑 😍 kefir... mmmm mmm good.
I had good results with Meyenberg goat milkfrom Walmart for several months, but recently, the same product didn't produce kefir. The milk would not ferment. Cow milk works. Not sure if it's a bad batch of goat milk or if they started adding antibiotics?
@@milkweedfarms5481 hi n I need to know can I gain weight by taking kefir milk every morning ? I am very skinny n I want to gain more weight ya. And I love kefir milk. Thank you again .
Instead of putting a lid on the jar can I use a cheese cloth n cover it? I learnt that it needs to breath n cannot tighten the lid Isit correct? I love kefir
Yes. The more it devours the sugars out of the milk the more curdly it will be. It also matters as to how many grains you have. The more grains the quicker it uses up the sugars. Try not setting it out so long
Add more milk, shorten ferment. The fresh addition of milk will refresh and sweeten the sour kefir. Set on counter 12 hrs, then put in frig. I've also added MAPLE SYRUP at times.
Try doing a second ferment. After you strain out the grains, add a bit of fruit to the jar and let it sit on the counter again for a few hours, before putting it in the fridge. I’ve used different berries, orange or lemon slices , dates. You only need a couple pieces. The microbes eat on the sugar in the fruit and the flavour of the kefir mellows and gets a little fizzy. PIt also boosts the vitamin content even more. You can reuse the fruit or peel for several batches.
Great tutorial !!! I'm new to Kefir making and I love it! I'm pleased to learn how to wash the grains. Thank you for sharing. All the best.
Thanks a lot for today’s tutorial .
I love homemade kefir blended with frozen fruit and a little stevia and honey to sweeten. It comes out like ice cream.
Never use honey with kefir
I love orange, pineapple and kefir!
@@Error-lz1vpwhy not?

Yes , that is true. I use distilled for everything!
Thank you for a very informative video. I love kefir!!
You are welcome! Hope it helps!
Finally the video I wanted, thanks so much
Awesome! I hope it was helpful!

I havent had that happen. I stir them cigourously and they are pretty sturdy.
Makes great biscuits or quick breads that call for milk or buttermilk in the recipe.

Me too! I love the tartness although it is an acquired taste for some.

That's a thought. They may have added antibiotics. I have not tried goat milk
Can I keep kefir grains in the freezer n how long can it be there? Thank you very much
@@ViennaNSLim I have heard that you can. I have never done that. I put mine to sleep in the refrigerator. The longest has been 5 weeks.
@@ViennaNSLim I keep mine in the refrigerator when I want them to go to sleep. I have kept them in there for 5 weeks
Oh ok I shall keep some in the fridge to try out. But for five weeks isn’t it too long now n do u keep feeding it every few days?

@@ViennaNSLim yes. I open mine daily so I give it some air that way but you sure can!
Thank you for kind advice.
its easier to add milk to the kefir with grains and shake and strain.
I will also give that a try!
This is how we “rinse” grains - only with a little milk 🥛
I also learnt that fermenting kefir on counter top minimum must be 24 10:07 hrs Isit true? Thanks again.
@@ViennaNSLim yes but the time depends upon the amount of kefir grains in your jar
My new kefir grains are reallly small... will they grow over time. I mean get bigger?
Yes! Mine have grown as they are fed and also multiied!
Im new to milk kefir, mine isnt smooth, its kind of curdly, am i fermenting too long? 24 hours or maybe more?
Yes. The more it devours the sugars out of the milk the more curdly it will be. It also matters as to how many grains you have. The more grains the quicker it uses up the sugars. Try not setting it out so long

Can I buy some of your grains
@@lindacheney2764 sure. I've never shipped them but since it's cool out should be no problem
How much do you sell your grains for ? Thx
15.00 when I have them. I usually just sell them locally
What to do if the kefir turns out to be too sour
You can test it as you go. Usually 1 day will not make it too sour. I will say that over time, I have developed a taste for the more sour flavor!

Don't rinse them apparently. No need to.
@@johnfreeborn979 I understand. This works for me if I let them sit too long
