- This was the night fishing portion of a 36 hour snapper, tuna and deep drop safari with Captain Matt of Smith and Son's Charters on the Bluefin! We traveled over 100 miles to fish the Boomvang floating oil rig and from there headed to a nearby ship and then Nancen before heading back to Boomvang. We caught blackfin and yellowfin. There were tons of porpoise feeding on flying fish. My friends and I used the lures from this video • Top 8 Tuna Lures! for ... to catch tuna.
I caught them on chunk and the white hammered diamond jig. We also caught them on the Williamson Bethos jigs, halcos, Frenzy flying fish and the flatfall jig. I did not see enough topwater action to throw poppers very long and my short herring jig did not get any bites.
Striker Tackle Popper- did not use much, no topwater
Halco Max 130- no fish for me, several people caught yellowfin and blackfin with them
Unnamed jig (similar to a Williamson Herring Jig)- I used a little but no bites
Williamson Benthos Speed Jig- multiple blackfin for Imran and Matt
Striker Tackle Flatfall jig- blackfin for Matt
Glow Hammered Diamond Jig- Lost one fish and caught blackfin
Ocean Tackle International Jaeger Jig- did not use, current was light
2/0 HD Circle Hook for chunking- caught one yellow and lost one
Frenzy (or Yummy) flying fish- Sebastian caught a yellow on his
To make it easy for you to find the products that I use in my videos, I have become an Amazon affiliate so that I can add links to the products that I use. I do make a commission from each sale, but have hopefully created a one stop shop for you to find everything that you need! If Amazon does not carry the product or the price is crazy, I listed links where you can find them or just listed the names so you can grab them at your local tackle store.

Awesome Video. Thanks Eric!
You bet!
Great video. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching!
Nice. Thank you for sharing Eric
You bet! Thanks for watching!
That is awesome ! I use to book trips 12 hrs never been 36 hrs before,
I like them a lot more. First I have to drive down from Dallas so its a long trip for a few hours of fishing... second, catching tuna on topwater can be epic... my new favorite is deep dropping! That was a blast and I cover that in video number 3...
what rig was this, Perdido, Nansen Boomvang? Great trip!
It’s been a while but I think it was Boomvang and Nancen
Is a five foot eight inch rod good for that
I use a short rod for jigging vs. a longer rod…. For casting I use a 7 1/2’ plus rod, for jigging normally 6’ or less. Chunking I normally just use a jigging rod. I recommend a rod stout enough to put the heat on a tuna, don’t go with a lite rod or you will have a prolonged fight and a higher potential to lose a big fish!
@@ThumpemupFishingchannel Thank you
How do you like fishing on that vessel compared to NB?
I love it, it’s smaller so much fewer tangles and Matt is a great captain. The quarters for sleeping are smaller but other than that it’s great!
Planning on buying a reel for future tuna trips which size would you recommend a 14k or 18k Saragosa? Thanks
14K for popping, 18K for jigging
How many lb should I spool each reel? Thanks
@@aristotletheexplorer7114 I normally use 65lb
U don’t use electric reel
I don't at night for tuna but Mick used his and he caught a bunch with the jigging mode. I prefer poppers and swimbaits or chunking to jigging but the electrics are super effective for blackfin...
You use an ugly stick tiger elite
Yes for my electric and trolling umbrella rigs on Texoma. Works well for me!
Sorry but seriously? All that huff and puff and tagging out you had me hoping for an two-3 gaff 80 to 100 lb+ yellowfin tuna not a 20 lb-. Man bummer. Maybe next time.
The big girls come out in the winter time… unfortunately not that many tuna and fewer monsters in the summer!
Or you can let the very small baby tuna go and grow up.
Nope I prefer sushi to catch and release
