  • Extreme FishingNZ Injun Park took Moe, Kaz, and myself on a two day trip to Waihau Bay to teach us the full process of how he catches Southern Bluefin Tuna - What lures he uses, outrigger setups, secret tips, food preperation, how to perserve the catch - this video documents this trip from start to finish.
This part is an excerpt from Injun's NZ Fishing News Article
We headed down in the evening and drove through the night. Bright and early the next morning, we set up the gear with all the same equipment as the previous week and began marking lots of bait on the Simrad Sounder. As we were mowing the lawn, the boats around us were continually hooking up. We would go past, then next minute the boat nearby would have a four-way hook up. We even heard on the radio that a boat had hooked up and was on a three- and a half-hour fight, which was still going (the fish is a pending world record at 179kg). It was actually a rather frustrating day but there are always days like this and it’s all part of fishing. We decided to call it and get a good rest before heading out the following day.
Day two arrived, and bright and early we headed to the same spot as we knew that the SBT were there. People were hooking up all around us again, so we decided to work ourselves up to a deeper area of Sea Valley. We were fishing at about the 1450m mark when we heard our Daiwa Saltiga LD60 start to scream. We were thrilled and once this reel had started, we saw another SBT jumping out of the water after hitting our second lure. This second fish dropped but our line was tight on the first. It was Glenn’s time to shine. We harnessed him up and he was away fighting his first SBT. After about 30 minutes of fighting the fish, we had the leader.

What an awesome video mate showing the whole process from launching the boat to rigging the spread to catching the southern blue fin tuna with Injun Kaz & Moe! Epic, really felt like I was there. I still haven't launched out Waihau as we launched Kawhia that time with Enchanter ... I probably need to catch another BFT tbh 😅🤙

Yeah, he did tell me he will hit me up this season for SBT, I am really hoping I can get few days off work but not super confident tbh 🤣 he gave me heaps of tips when I went out to get my first marlin aye , real nice guy! btw while your there, I have been contemplating to get the slow pitch set up and initially was looking at daiwa ld 35 with jigstar slow jerk(I am a big fan of jigstar) but seen your vids and kind of deviated to oceans legacy! I used to be in big love with catching kingies jigging off the yak, would you have a recommendation for all rounder slow pitch setup for bottom and kingies ?

@@fishaminmilesoutfishingadv199 Origin PE2.5 for all rounder, PE3 for targeting kings

@fishaminmilesoutfishingadv199 sorry I had a longer winded reply that doesnt seem to have posted. As an OLnz Kayak fishing team member, I've used a few rods from the yak for both kingies and general fishing. If you want the best jig action, the Origin rods are the best option. If you want a tougher rod that's a bit more forgiving when a big kingie turns and runs under the boat, an elementus is a better option. The Origin is my preference. Just have to be careful at the kayak and be ready to stick the rod tip down into the water if a fish turns quickly on you
