I found your channel again after so long, i love watching your stuff
My first show waa 5 years ago and it was so nerve wracking, but playing with other seasoned musicians was a really fun experience. Now im about to perform again this weekend im so excited:3
I was the bassist and singer in my band in high school. Our first "real" gig was in Newark, New Jersey and I think I counted 11 people in the audience. No one clapped after any of our songs - they were waiting for the bands to come after us. We still made it through the whole set, somehow. I honestly still have PTSD about that gig. But a couple months later, we played in front of about 1,000 people opening for the thrash band M.O.D. and the crowd loved us. So I felt better.
You should always expect to look back at your old work and cringe, this is true of every skill. It's a good thing, it means you are learning and growing.

As a mom of musicians, I can definitely say that watching the kids now hurts my ears a lot less than it did when they were younger.

Did not thought nothing about imperfect playing, I was just too happy to see a bass focused concert before watching one of my favorite bands, Def Leppard, and way more happier that it was you (already was subscribed and since I knew you were playing I put on my schedule for this day).

Same here Davie, as a bassist and guitarist (pls don’t kill me, i didnt know what bass was before i played guitar) I looked back at my first live performance and cringed. Although I had already played guitar for 2 yrs and was actually pretty experienced, i was sooo nervous beforehand that I literally barfed not 5 mins before I went on, and on the first song (a guitar solo) I absolutely burned. The notes were played like 3 times too fast (due to my nervousness) and I got off the click track pretty fast. It’s been a whole year since that terrible experience, and i feel like I’ve grown a huge amount (I also discovered bass in that time) from where I first was. I’ve gone from playing basic barre chords (and not being able to use a pick) to now playing stuff from João Gilberto, Jack Johnson, and other guitar greats. So, I will encourage all of the other slappers and pickers out there - although you may cringe at yourself now, just wait - the longer you play, the better you will get. Although you may not be able to master stuff from Paul McCartney or Davie Biale (hehehe) yet, just keep on learning. Good things come to those who wait 😁

Well done Davie! One of my friends just learned to play guitar, he knew he was quite shitty at it, but he went up on a stage anyways to play Jimi hendrix for 20 min right after some epic performance from another guy. It was quite hilarious, I cheered him on loud as the only one in the audioence for the whole set 😉👍❤ He just did it to get as much experience as possible, respect.
I had been playing for myself for years when someone heard me and asked me to play live with their band. But I'd always played and even practiced with the band sitting down resting the "instrument that shall not be named" on my knee. During the first live performance, although it went well, I was constantly in my head because standing while playing added a whole new level of discomfort.
yea Im a grown man but my mom has always been really supportive of me lol and when i first started playing she wanted me to come over for Christmas and play some stuff for family and friends so i learned like 4 or 5 Christmas songs and had only been playing for a couple of months and thats when i found out playing standing vs sitting is hard so from then on out i only played standing still do when i practice i hardly ever sit now i learned it early
My first live performance was playing the national anthem on guitar for my high school graduation. I was super nervous and definitely botched a little bit of it but I'm definitely proud of that moment. The roaring crowd afterward was one of the greatest feelings of achievement I've experienced. Thankfully they recorded the whole thing so I can watch myself be awkward on stage for the first time over and over again.

I felt exactly the same in my first live concert. A pianist accompanied me and I studied the song over and over and I was happy just because I could play it technically perfect. A couple of days before the concert, she told me that I was playing it without any feeling, and I got really surprised and angry, I didn't believe that. I played that concert like a robot, but I didn't know it by that time. Nowdays, 20 years later, I totally understand what she said. I think that most of us just don't know how to properly perform at first, and we focus too much in technique and other stuff, but feeling it and enjoying it is a must.
It's strange how that works. "Technically perfect" is perfect, but it doesn't sound as good as a performance with feeling, which I guess wouldn't be "technically perfect" although it might be "musically perfect". So you have to achieve two perfections to end up with one perfection that's more perfecter than the other two. Or something like that. It's all very complicated. 😵💫
Tbf, telling that someone a few days before a concert is kind of a shit move.
Not that it was wrong, but at that point and with the available timeframe it will not really be possible to change that at all.
Like if you would have had a deeper understanding of that you would not have made that mistake to begin with - so what did she expect to achieve?
It does not really make a positive difference and is more likely to make someone more nervous and tense.
Not that she should have kept quiet about it, constructive feedback is valuable after all, but she could have given you some more sublime pointers maybe.

@@jbennett3578 Not that strange. The "feeling" being highlighted here is "having fun". If you are having fun and having a blast while playing a piece that you know inside out, it will show up in the performance. It will elevate it and gives it life.

I had my first ever show not too long ago, and it didnt go well, leaving me very embarrassed. I thought after that performance i should just give up my dream. Davie you have just shown me to "never give up". Thank you
never give up wierdo. I've made many mistakes over the years and I even got the tempo of a song wrong a few days ago when I was doing the intro by myself. A song I've played live hundreds of times. I could feel two of the other band members enjoying my discomfort, but I just kept going and got in sync after a few more bars. We are all human, even Dave, so just do some more practice and go again. It's worth it. I've done a couple of thousand shows now that I wouldn't have done if I gave up back then.

playing live is a skill that needs to be practiced. My first ever shows were so damn bad compared to the ones I did years later and that was just solely based on rehearsing and becoming a better musician and also relying on the acquired experience. So Never give up! Keep developing your skills.
There's a reason why the term "bedroom musician" was coined. Playing live is a whole different ball game. Keep going at it, but stay self-aware. Record yourselves, rehearse like you're actually playing live, always aim to entertain and make people feel what you want them to feel with your playing. Observe more experienced bands and apply what you're comfortable with. Embrace any cock ups when on stage, with experience you'll eventually learn how to correct/laugh at them on the fly. I spent years swinging between good and horrible shows, until a tour in Japan suddenly made everything clicked for me.
Just remember embarrassing yourself and failing aren't immoral. You didn't do anything wrong.
I think anyone who has ever had performance anxiety will appreciate this video and find it inspiring. Your second performance of that first tune was beautiful...yes confidence is key, and if your unconfident performance makes you lose even more confidence it can spiral, but if you realize that's the issue then just believe in yourself and your potential and keep working at until you get there.

I feel like I go back and watch my old drumming videos and cringe, only because I see the growth I’ve made and consider my former self “not as good”. Davie looks back on his first performance with a criticizing attitude, which is to be expected, but I think he did an amazing job regardless. For anyone to put on a first show without missing a note and still leave space between the notes can say they did a good job. But being hard on himself to be expected, especially at such a professional level that Davie holds himself to. It’s true his confidence definitely brought a whole new level to his performance
As you mentioned Bocchi the Rock with some pictures, there is a very important quote from the drunk bassist. "You are not in a combat with the people in front of you." and Bocchi realizes, that she "never had enemies here".
I think this is a very important thing to mention, that the people aren't against there will at these events.
I'm a pianist and in my first performance I clicked an effect button by mistake. I turned red as a tomato and was shocked for a moment but I had to finish the song so I deactivated the thing and finished.
A year later I had another oportunity but this time everything went perfect. The whole place was filled with magic. I almost cried from happiness.
That's why I can relate with everything Davie said. Never give up, guys, it's totally worth it.

The first time I performed live I played two songs (Devolva-me by Adriana Calcanhoto and Great Balls of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis). I was extremely nervous, I was sweating profusely, my hands slid a couple of times due to the sweat, I missed a few notes, and I was dreading the moment when I'd make the first mistake, because at the time I would just freeze when I realized I had made a mistake. Still, looking back, it was a nice moment. I was playing with people who had a lot more experience than me and they were really supportive. I ended up playing quite a few more times and by the last couple of times I performed live, I'd be playing way harder songs, with confidence, and enjoying it to the fullest. That's just the way it goes! I had videos online of me playing simple songs on the bass and looking back at them I do cringe, but I also realize that that was then and now things are different. I could not have done then what I can do now and that's fine!
I've played guitar for 20+ years, and I can honestly say that if I were to get up on a stage in front of hundreds or thousands of people, I would probably play as though it was my first time holding a guitar. I suffer from panic disorder, and I have a very hard time just being in large crowds, much less performing in front of them. We're all only human. Keep slapping bro! 🤘

As a drummer my first performance was terrible but I managed to get through every problem.
I played with another guy's drumset, the bass drum was sticky for some reason, so the beaters wont come back, solved it with some tape before each song.
No carpet what so ever on the floor so it was "the night of the living bass drum" as it moved forward and away from me, solved it with some rope tied to my throne and to the bass drum.
As a noobie playing double bass pedal i used a drop clutch to keep the hats closed, but accidentaly stepped into de hh pedal twice so they opened and was too loud, i didn't have the accuracy to close them back with the stick, so i had to lower my dynamics.
Also broke many sticks, and had to reach for new ones with very bad placing for I didn't had a propper accesory to keep my sticks
....
For me it was a nightmare, but then, to my surprise, people had a great time an my band members were happy, so I guess I did it pretty well 😅
Never give up, the show must go on, the people watching you deserve the best of you. If you have problems improvise and solve them the best you can, and think about them for the next time you perform. That's how it goes

All they see is only the final product of you, but seeing your struggles with this video, it makes sense that everyone have gone through pain n sacrifices even Davie504 himself. Hi ! My most embarassing moment was this year. I played a song un front of 500 person and the singer missed half of the rehearsal. It was only my second time on a live performance. She had no rythm, missed the start. I had no emotion while playing and my bass strap broke. I had to play on my knees praying that someone back stage would come and fixe the strap. It was a hard time but I think I’ve learned from this moment and gain in confidence.
And here I was stressing over missing two notes in the beginning of a song for 300 people... You got this
My first performance occurred in 2012 only a few months after starting to play bass again. I had not played for 27 years and was in my mid 50s. It was a terrific experience and I'm now performing in 3 different bands.
I remember back in the first band I played with, every time we were to perform new songs my arms and joints actually hurt before going up on stage. As I grew more used to the songs, and to performing, this gradually went away, and I grew more confident performing. I can still feel some of it the first time performing new material, but I’m much more confident now.
I know exactly what you mean, I went through the same thing back in the day. It's just the physical effects of anxiety, which can be minimized by the perfect amount of alcohol. I would always have 3 drinks before going on stage to lower the anxiety level, but not impair my ability to play or sing.

Super tough pill...ow to swallow when assessing yourself and admitting one's failures or faults. Good for you Davie for slapping yourself and getting it done right. I was a guitarist (slapp myself) until I damaged my neck and back in 2005. I couldn't feel anything in my fretting hand (left) and my fingers couldn't move quickly, so I stopped playing. Towards the end of last year, I finally got feeling back in my fretting hand. I picked up my Les Paul and forgot everything and sounded like poo poo. I have always wanted to play bass as well and have been to a lot of music stores, here in Japan, to check them out. I am afraid to plug in and try because I don't want to hurt the employees' ears (ah, good excuse).
When I watch your videos, I always get a chuckle and some inspiration to finally go and get a bass or maybe a tuna.... *crickets*. I just have a problem finding the right beginner bass that will also be a great long-term friend like my Les Paul was/has been. Then I have to get the confidence to sound like caca at first and practice turning my sound into Pavarotti.
I think this video has helped me take more steps (mentally) toward getting a bass and learning to slapp.
The question I have: Which bass would be a great investment as a starter and go-to for many years (hopefully, since I am past 50 ha)? 🪗👋💚💯

Honestly if people pick apart every detail in a live performance, then they aren't really music lovers. They're just armchair music critics. I don't think that neither the first performance of Hallelujah, or the fretless noodling were necessarily bad at all. But it is great to see your humility and improvement since then. Thank you for inspiring all of us!
I definitely respect the fact that you can look at past performances and see where you could've done better....and actually incorporate that in your growth. That was commendable.
But to be real, i didn't really see anything wrong. Not trying to negate your learning or improving. You definitely grew a lot as a musician. But overall, at least to me, you did good.
Video 1 (first hallelujah) was kinda fire, ngl, even with the nerves and "lack of emotion," because it had groove. Lol. Personally, I think that song depends on how you look at it. Admittedly, the second playthrough of hallelujah you did had more emotion behind it, which was one of the big things you felt you needed to address; that was great. But to me, the first one was passable. I was friggin' FLOORED by that performance, because you were doing harmony and melody at the same time! That was amazing!
Video 3 (fretless) was also kinda fire too! You had some NICE bass chops on that one, fam. Now, I'm not a bass player (I do guitar, and I did drums before I took a hiatus), but I'd imagine that fretless is kinda hard to do. I don't think I'll ever play a fretless because I don't want to deal with that level of uncertainty, lol. I say all this to say that it was amazing doing all that you did on it. And the intonation.......it was a fretless in all fairness. Lol. 🤷🏾♂️
Tell me what it's like playing on a fretless if you can. Is there a trick to it? Should I play a fretless guitar? Gimme a reason. Lol.

My first live performance was in front of a prison crowd. It was a whole bunch of hardened criminals and I was interrupting their weight lifting and other recreational activities with my electric twanger. When they found out there was punch they all lightened up and had a good time... I played horribly but afterwards I got a lot of nice compliments from killers, thieves and drug addicts that made me feel really good. I was really surprised that no one left, I guess you could say I had a captive audience. :)

My first concert experience was as a vocalist in a terrible cover band that had a bizarrely diverse repertoire - I remember Greenday and shortly after Creedence Clearwater Revival, so you can see where that would lead (to nothing, of course). The guitarist's cousin had a band that we were always making fun of because they made music to play at tacky dances in the community. So out of nowhere in a great act of courage or dumbness (most likely), these guys invited us to open for their show, which we discovered would take place in the parking lot of a supermarket in a country town. We are talking about a country in Latin America, where I live. the band's bass had nowhere to plug his instrument so the feedback and amplifiers were the same for guitar and bass. vocals had no return. We got there and I had the worst vocal performance possible for a human being, while we were watched by two people who apparently enjoyed the sound, until later we realized that they were completely drunk and in no condition to understand anything in terms of music.
It still felt very genuine to me. You may have been nervous but you were brave to stand on that stage by yourself and play such an emotional song in front of so many people.
My band and i had our very first performance yesterday and even though we were nervous, i'm still proud of us. Just as we all should be proud of ourselves when doing something that requires us to step out of our comfort zones. Therefore i am proud of myself and my band and every single one of you people who either were or are scared to perform live. I am proud of you and you can do it!
At my first concert, I was so nervous, I started my piece an octave too low. I just heard my music teacher in one of the front seats go "Hmmm, that's interesting".
I never improved though, so I play by myself now, with earphones.
So well done to Davie for getting over that block. It's not easy to play an instrument in front of many people. Also kind of feels like you have your entire heart on display :s

Being nervous at a performance is a sign that you care about doing well, and avoiding that discomfort is a great motivator for being prepared. Not that preparing will necessarily eliminate stage fright conpletely, but the confidence of knowing you're ready helps. And performing in front of an audience takes practice just like the actual playing.

My first live gig (playing guitar I am ashamed to say), was in a pub in the UK. I was so nervous I kept accidentally turning down the volume knob on the guitar. This was probably a blessing for the audience as half the notes I was playing were wrong anyway. Like you, Davie504, I think I have come a long way since then - we all have to start somewhere!
David, I'm a keyboardist and don't even play the bass at all. I subscribe to your channel in order to understand the other musicians that I work with. The lesson that you taught me today was one of the most valuable that I ever had. As a technical performer myself, I did not see anything wrong with the first version ... until I heard the second (so much better) version! Just wanted you to know, your channel not only helps other bass players to improve their art, but other musicians as well. Thank you David.

1976 at age 13. i knew 1 song for less than a week. was in a band. we had never played together. i had no amp.there was a talent contest at my school. asked a teacher if she had a dollar so we could rent amps and a bass for me. she let us skip all our classes so we could go to ask all the other teacher to donate. we collected enough but no ride to pick u the equipment. 1 teacher whose husband was the metal shop teacher. ironic, metal shop. who had a van. i rented a rick 4001and a sun 100 w bass head with cabinet. we practiced in the auditoream 1 hour before show. the rick had a broken nut and the e string would frquently slip out. but we played our song and won 2nd place. the winners were awarded based on audiance applause. we lost to the school jazz band that had 35 members who all clapped for themselves. that was the only reason why we got second. the song was simple. rush temples of syrinx. but 1 week before i had never picked up a bass,

I'm glad I got to see your process. There's certainly people who are better at improvising or at playing compositions after practice, and there's nothing wrong with it. Tim Henson himself, from Polyphia, usually writes complex guitar riffs, so when you see an improvisation, you don't really get to see the same complexity, which of course doesn't mean he's faking it.

Tip: Yes, you improved immensely by getting into the feel of the song. One thing to remember (so that it doesn't look like you are playing the song alone in your room), is you need to "give" the song outward to the audience. It's the difference between keeping it to yourself, versus sending it out. It's an energy thing, and other people can feel that. When you've practiced alone for a long time, it can take practice to shed that habit.

Davie, even if you have a bad performance, which all musicians eventually will at some point, you’re still an amazing bassist, and the reason I became a SLAPPER.

I'm someone who didn't exactly bomb my first performance, but didn't exactly crush it either. I was focused on everything except the performance. I really appreciate hearing this from you! I'm going to get back up on that bike and take another ride. 🙃
I auditioned for a band at an open mic. The band leader Gary loved it and said everyone would know my name and I would be in magazines in the next 5 years. Then we did another open mic one week later and I totally sucked. Gary said "well I guess we know you can't play" and told me to get off the stage before we finished the first song. I went home and literally cried as soon as I walked through the door. I practiced very hard after that. 1 year later I tried again with a different band. I am now considered an "expert" in my new band, a "hot-shot" if you will, and even though my skill has not improved much, I am better because I practice all the time and I play with confidence. I feel you Davie. My first ever live performance was just frightening. Although the response from the small crowd was encouraging, I came away feeling very unsatisfied - innately knowing that 'vibe' was missing. It was only until I finally felt that comfort of being 'in the moment' when it all began to click.

On my first ever performance in a club I broke my lowest E string in the very beginning so I needed to quickly re-arrange the songs for the other strings in mind while also singing. I believe it was Come Down by the Pillows from FLCL OST. I did a pretty good job in that regard but in general the gig was awful)))

My first live performance was playing the six string bass with a band sweet child o mine the intro and first two solos, was really nervous, my hands were trembling, but the feeling of being on stage with everyone's instruments blasting was awesome, maybe someday I will also play the final solo
Davie I've performed since 10 years old. I started on bass, now i mostly play accordion. Despite your genius creativity you are like me ... Introverts. Look at the stage presence of Robert Trujillo. I know we feel awkward but we must learn these things. Kiss made an entire career on stage presence. I still have a hard time with this but this is the only thing you lack and only best advice i leave you with. Another friend if mine with great stage presence is Percy Cardona from Last Bandoleros and The Mavericks. I can play like him and more but his stage presence leaves me dead in the water. Also, do you ever deal with anxiety? Just wondering. Most of us do or will. Keep rocking. Amazing bass player.

Drummer here, the first concert I played I practiced for it a LOT, by myself and with my band. But even so, the night of the concert I was so nervous that minutes before going on stage I drew complete blank and forgot our entire set and how to play everything. I quickly huddled into some corner of back stage, put in my ear pods, and tried to listen to all the songs we were going to perform. Once I got on stage and started I felt more comfortable but I was so so tense for the whole performance. I survived tho 😅
My first performance... I play bass since 11 years now, but I had never performed. In a bar I like to visit, there are jam sessions, but I never join them, only because I can not improvise very well. Still, people knew I play bass, so they were asking me over and over again to play in a jam. Then, they came with a new concept: an event where musicians can attend to, with their instrument. On months before, they get a few songs they have to practice, only to know who you are performing those with 15 minutes before you have to go on stage. So no band rehearsal at all. So I studied my bass lines and went to the event. A few hours before the event, I started becoming nervous. I did not know what to expect of being on stage for 150 people. Would I forget my bass lines or make terrible mistakes? 15 minutes before performing I met the other people I had to play with. Then we went on stage. Actually: the moment I got on stage, my nerves disappeared. I played mistakes, but my nerves were gone and I enjoyed. Later, I performed a few times with a band, and I was never nervous, which was pretty cool. An oh, I'm still not 10 % as good as Davie504. I started playing bass at 35 years old and I don't think I'm talented, but OK, I also don't practice enough.

My first live experience was being 15, playing synthesizer in a 80's big hair band named Caution. We played at a middle school in front of the whole school & staff. It was an awesome show. We played 2 hours & the auditorium was packed. Just a fun show.

1st times are almost always so awkward. I remember my 1st recital when I was 9, I was singing STIFF on stage like a damn rock. And of course since then, performers get to be better at their stage presence. Since then I've joined competitions and won, did a few gigs & performances here and there. May not all be perfect but every performance whether a lot are watching or just your ceiling watching, its always a perfect opportunity to improve ❤
My first ever live performance was kinda traumatising, and left me very anxious to try doing live gigs again. I played at an open-air bar with my two friends. The tricky part was - there was no sound engineer to help us out and there was only some crappy, old amp that we had no idea how to use xD So basically it sounded... Not great. We had no audio feedback to hear ourselves and I was trying to do live-looping, on a stage which was made of some broken wooden pallets - EACH, and every single time I would try to make a loop, the mic picked up thompy noise from the looper pedal and stomping of the other guys 😂
Ended up as a total disastrous cacophony ❤ After that I had a couple more terrible, traumatising gigs, and every time I was like "nah, I dont wanna do this ever again". But I did not give up and am now doing quite frequent gigs and tours :)
I was so terrified playing live the first time, I was shaking nearly uncontrollably. Put an extreme introvert in front of a crowd of people actively analyzing him... no stress.

I have yet to perform live in front of an audience, so I have no way to predict how confident or shaky I'll be when it finally happens. However, this video really does bring me comfort knowing that looking back on that first performance years down the line is going to make me cringe no matter what because the only direction I'll be able to head is up.
