Best Non-game Game Thing is Lacrimosa of Dana book. Pretty niche but it is by far the best novelization of a game I’ve read. Very true to the source material while also expanding on some story elements to build even more emotion from what was already an incredibly emotional story. Anna Kashina did an amazing job and deserves recognition for her devotion to creating a faithful and heartfelt representation of the story.
Your view on BotW vs TotK is very interesting and is really telling of our differing perspective. The way you feel about how Tears has some sore spots that keep it from the perfection you wanted are exactly how I feel about Breath, and had trouble LOVING BotW as a result. In the meantime, TotK is everything i wanted out of the predecessor, and it's one of my all time favorite Zelda games. I felt it had a really good balance of old and new and a lot of much needed variety. But i do truly think either view makes sense, and I'm glad both games exist.
I love Tears of the Kingdom with all my heart, but it winning best narrative over Alan Wake- or Sea of Stars for that matter- is quite silly. It’s a fine story on it’s own, but there are just too many executional flaws. On top of that, there’s that classic Nintendo-ish repetition thrown in after each major area that gets annoying after the 3rd time.
I think that, in general, polls tell you more about the voter base than about the 'truth' of what is being voted on. Since Tears is a more prolific game in terms of sales numbers than the other games, and especially since Kit & Krysta are ex-Nintendo, it is likely that many voters for Tears in that category just haven't played the other games, at least not fully or to the same depth (no pun intended) as they did with Tears.
@@markieman64it wasn’t meant to be an objective take, I’m just responding to it with my own opinion. To be honest, I was not under the impression people thought Zelda’s story was that good so I was a little shocked more than anything.
Props to Kit for bringing "I Want to Live" into the conversation regarding the score of Baldur's Gate 3, the song and theme is really beautiful and it's woven into the game's different musical cues as much as Down by the River is, legit got me a tad emotional when explaining the motive of all the characters: to live. And even more props to you two this time around as well because I was gonna say while this was a GREAT episode, I feel some Nintendo bias here and there, but choosing Baldur's Gate 3 and Spiderman 2 as your personal Game of the Year shows that in the end you have a clear vision. ... With that being said, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty not getting best DLC is absolutely criminal and you two have to go play that right 👏now 👏, I'm having none of it, there's no way a bunch of (ported) tracks that don't even meet the design standards of the base game (from the WiiU, mind you!) rank better than this expansion that also brought in an entire overhaul to the game progression systems 😤
@@kitandkrysta Awesome! I think some categories feel really silly with a heavy Nintendo bias from the voters(I mean duh with the channels focus, i'm a Nintendo fanboy but even I think some of these are very narrow minded winners that were picked by the community). Like, TOTK best narrative? Zelda best character?! Mario Kart 8 best dlc?!? TOTK best RPG?!?! (on top of Xenoblade 3 getting snubbed from even being in the dlc category) Like, cmon guys, seriously? lol
This channel whether Kit or Krysta want it to be is going to be Nintendo fan Slanted. I imagine some people probably only game on Switch, what would you expect them to pick? Starfield?!
Fantastic year for the medium. Unfortunate and messy for the industry. I'm glad you took time to highlight both. I'm not fussed on what wins, but what deserves recognition. Brilliant episode as always.
I agree with Krysta about ultrahand, granted there are ways to bypass the ultra hand but still sometimes especially at the begining - mid game it could be a little bit tedious to use it, but to me a huge letdown was the swordplay overall keeping the same 3 swing animations which were already bit boring to do it, something like wind waker did good with directional inputs affecting the outcome of the swings animations. Wish link could learn different techniques or swordplay
Awesome awards! So much better than the actual game awards lol. TOTK is my game of the year but I also have been LOVING Mario Wonder 😊 I definitely agree with your critiques of TOTK, nothing can really match the experience of BOTW, my fav game of all time. But it was still INCREDIBLE!
Excellent job Kit & Krysta on a wonderful awards show! I feel it did a great job at expressing the strength of this year, as far as game releases is concerned, with the variety of games discussed! I feel like the theme of this year is freedom being expressed in various ways: - Alan Wake 2 represents freedom of a developer to truly craft a game to their vision unencumbered by hardware and funding restrictions, as Sam Lake has clearly done with this game. - Baldur's Gate 3 represents freedom of players to craft their own narrative through their choices and actually have them meaningfully represented in a game's story proper, as Larian managed to accomplish with their vast permutations of events that can occur throughout the game - Tears of the Kingdom represents freedom in player driven goals, exploration, and puzzle-solving through its wonderful mechanics, design systems, and world design. My personal favorite games of the year are: 1) Tears of the Kingdom - What more needs to be said about this one, just incredible to have such an innovative mechanics as described earlier but a compelling narrative and characters with the highest highs of the Zelda series story. It's last act is quite literally perfect and games rarely come together so well, particularly "The Last Catch" which is one of the best gaming moments of this year and of all time. 2) Metroid Prime Remastered - the best game of all time remade wonderfully, what more is there to be said? It's mechanics, music, and gameplay are still the peak of gaming even 21 years later. 3) In Stars and Time - this was a complete surprise to me but from the moment I started playing this I was enamored with the elegant turn-based RPG gameplay and the most amazing character writing of the whole year. This is the most emotionally devastating story I played this year and I love it for it. 4) Slay the Princess - another indie masterpiece in narrative writing that is so wonderfully enjoyable to uncover. It got its grip on me last year when the Steam Next Fest demo happened, but playing through the game again now it completely delivered on its promise and surprised me every step of the way. 5) Super Mario Bros Wonder - There is not much more to be said of Wonder's amazing level design, innovative mechanic twists on well-trodden ground of genre traditions, and its utterly appealing aesthetic and audio composition. Of all the games this year it was probably the most concentrated burst of fun I had this year. - Runner-Up: Chants of Sennaar - One of the most interesting game concepts; a puzzle game built around deciphering a language from context clues alone, it is among the most intellectually stimulating games I ever played, with a really good theme at the heart of it. Do not sleep on this title! Personal Misses (games I have not yet found the time to play but are excited to delve into in the coming months): - Pikmin 4 - I was playing through Pikmin 1+2, as well as 3 Deluxe with a friend, to get myself ready for this title, but timing struggles getting together with my friend prevented us from meeting. As such I have yet to play Pikmin 4 even though I'm certain I'll love it based on what I have heard about the game so far and my love for the series and all things Dandori. - Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon - I have never played an Armored Core game before but have always admired the series from afar for its aesthetics and music. Every bit of footage I've seen of this game looks so wild and fun to play that I can't wait to try this for myself over the holiday break.

In the spirit of Kit and Krysta doing their own game awards, here are my Top 5 games I played in 2023: 5. River City Girls 4. Sonic Superstars 3. Super Mario RPG Remake 2. Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom 1. Trails From Zero I posted a similar list earlier, but TH-cam must have deleted my comment: what the heck
Baldur's Gate 3 is probably my favorite soundtrack, with my favorite song being an optional boss fight that is debatably harder than the final boss. The character sings in his own boss music lol.
The farther out I get from playing Tears the more "messy" it sort of feels like in my memory. Not sure id ever wanna play it thru again. i dont think id ever wanna do the depths again.
I can see why Nintendo took out item duping from TOTK. The depths are for the battery (because I liked ultra hand and creating things), but if you dupe your way into it, you don’t really need to engage with it. I loved the depths for upgrading my battery and duping would’ve ruined the purpose for that.
If you want any chance of upgrading some of the cooler armour (like OoT) you basically need the duplication glitch. Because it requires a ton of star shards which only spawn at night, if it spawns in your vicinity. I went almost the whole game and didn’t naturally come across them often. Only had like 1-3. You need 3-4 for _each_ upgrade step. At max, if you’re trying to farm them, you might be able to get 3 per night but that’s if everything works in your favour. It’s way too tedious. Some items like those should’ve had reduced thresholds, while other materials the game showers you with should’ve been reduced since you’ll run into them so often. It’s the only time I used the glitch. I just wanted cool armour to upgrade. It’s not even the strongest armour available, yet it’s harder to upgrade than the Royal Guard armour which is stronger.
I honestly didn't think anything could unseat Tears of the Kingdom for my own GotY, but Spider-Man 2 for sure did that. Also, a great year for games set and/or produced in Scotland! 🏴 Viewfinder was a highlight for me.
Btw my top 3 in order Bg3>Zelda tears and Mario Wonder. I think these 3 were way above anything else this year. But being a huge fan of BG2 - top 10 game of all time - and returning to the forgotten realms and meeting Jaheira afain (whom I had in the party in BG1&2) was too much nostalgia and fan service that it became my GOTY.
Love the Kit and Krysta Edition of the 2023 Game Awards! Zelda TOTK has a place in our hearts. Krysta was right on point with TOTK and the mechanics. Love the suit Kit! Kit putting the blame on Krysta along the way! BOTY, quite silly 😂
Pizza Tower is my game of the year. Pikmin 4 and Mario Wonder are excellent games, but it’s not even close to how badly I love pizza tower. It’s been years since I’ve felt such fervent love for a game.
The year is almost up. Here’s to a great episode! Ok…that was fun! Great game of the year discussion, including all categories. Good reflection back on Super Nintendo World and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, too.
Krysta's perspective on Tears of the Kingdom around the 2:04:48 mark is exactly how I feel about the game. In my mind, I keep going back to how much I absolutely loathed Ultrahand, and how the mechanics and gameplay sequences revolving around it completely soured my time with the game. It seemed like no matter what I tried, nothing I built with Ultrahand worked, and I kept seeing the immensely detailed creations from others online work flawlessly.
Three Houses says hello. Engage fell very flat in terms of impact, even though the FE community largely agrees it has far better gameplay than 3H and many previous games. The world, story, and characters really grabbed people in 3H, and the voice actors getting so involved with the community generated so much post-launch enthusiasm, which just wasn't there with Engage. I hope that wasn't just lightning in a bottle because I would love to see FE reach that level of fame again.
Nintendo's reasoning for delaying a game about over a real war is silly and overly cautious. I doubt anyone would have associated the two since they're not related.
Forspoken in the Biggest Disappointment category is the biggest disappointment of this entire video. There was a lot of misinformation and slander with Forspoken and many people think it was disappointing despite not actually playing it. Give it a chance and it’s actually a really solid and fun experience.
My Personal Picks would be: Best Graphics: Hogwarts Legacy Bringing the world of Harry Potter to life. Immersion through the roof with the settings alone. Best Narrative: Slay the Princess Amazing visual novel with branching paths, fully voiced, and all within 5 hours? Hell yeah. Most Cozy: Suika Game Although very frustrating lol it was a nice chill game to pickup and play Best Soundtrack: Hi-Fi Rush Two separate tracks for everything and everything bopping to the beat, can't beat that. Most Disappointing: Starfield Idk how they made a game that feels a decade old but worse. Best Multiplayer: Lethal Company By farrrrrrrrr, by far out matching everything else. The sleeper hit of the year. My #2 fav game of the year tbh. This Was Cool But No Category For It: The Sonic Symphony Seeing the history of a franchise as a live concert. Unforgettable experience. Best Vistas: Spiderman 2 Man the lightings amazing
Krysta: “I must have loved this game to have played it so much.” Playtime does not necessarily correlate to how good a game is or how much you enjoyed it. I have 700 hours in Splatoon 3 and I kind of hate the game.
Great video as always 🎉 yall are awesome! I just wonder why yall dont talk about splatoon? The splatfest are so much fun, i wonder if is only popular in japan.
I didn't vote for Mario RPG as best Remake because I hadn't played it yet until yesterday, but it absolutely would have got my vote. Now I'm learning that this may have very well made the difference
Clive is generic eye candy!?!? 🙀 I wasn’t a fan at first the whole package of FF16 but I feel like Clive was one of the parts in the game that made it special l, Cid was amazing too of course but I really liked Clive as the main hero, also I’m suprised the world changing in Alan’s section didn’t get a nomination.
How Totk got best narrative is beyond me. It’s my goty but I thought the narrative was rough. Had some really strong moments but the complete lack of cohesiveness from botw on top of the horribly cookie cutter cut scenes after each dungeon. Also has no motivation for ganondorf. Completely disregards the rest of the series which is fine, but it also kinda disregarded what happened in botw too. Just had no business in a best narrative conversation LOL
I'm offended for Tears Link. I don't usually think he's hot, but Link with his hair down 😍 Also, there needs to be a non-human hotness category because I loved Rauru sooo much (may be VA bias though).
It’s not good for Zelda, people are nuts. Play any of the 3D Zelda’s that aren’t BotW/TotK, and you’ll have a better time. They’re by no means masterpieces of story-telling, but they’re enjoyable and have likeable, unique characters.
I appreciate the sweat and tears Krysta must have poured into researching the BOTY category this year, and to Kit for fanning her along the way

Seeing the history of a franchise as a live concert. Unforgettable experience.
Best Vistas: Spiderman 2
Man the lightings amazing
Krysta: “I must have loved this game to have played it so much.” Playtime does not necessarily correlate to how good a game is or how much you enjoyed it. I have 700 hours in Splatoon 3 and I kind of hate the game.
xenoblade 3 rex is hottie of the year. those who know know.
Great video as always 🎉 yall are awesome! I just wonder why yall dont talk about splatoon? The splatfest are so much fun, i wonder if is only popular in japan.
Kit, I think you might be the only person in the world who pronounces "Spider-Man" like that.
The Switch version of Sukia game is the best version I've played. The app has too many ads and the website doesn't work as well.
OMG KIT!!!
He looks so good!
Nintendo should hire Studio Ghibli work on the Zelda movie.
So hyped :D
How can everybody's 1 2 switch be most disappointing when you already knew its was gonna be disappointing?
I didn't vote for Mario RPG as best Remake because I hadn't played it yet until yesterday, but it absolutely would have got my vote. Now I'm learning that this may have very well made the difference
Clive is generic eye candy!?!? 🙀 I wasn’t a fan at first the whole package of FF16 but I feel like Clive was one of the parts in the game that made it special l, Cid was amazing too of course but I really liked Clive as the main hero, also I’m suprised the world changing in Alan’s section didn’t get a nomination.
Best DLC: Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores
How Totk got best narrative is beyond me. It’s my goty but I thought the narrative was rough. Had some really strong moments but the complete lack of cohesiveness from botw on top of the horribly cookie cutter cut scenes after each dungeon. Also has no motivation for ganondorf. Completely disregards the rest of the series which is fine, but it also kinda disregarded what happened in botw too. Just had no business in a best narrative conversation LOL
Wow that thumbnail. How could I not click?
Why is WarioWare Move It in the list of most disappointing games of the year? 🤨
Yo yo yo whattup 😮
I wish Sabotage would lower the price of Sea of Stars. Maybe a game of the year award sale.
The Law Offices of Spiderman and Spiderman. Wario the new im"butt"ee into the Bodie HOF.
I'm offended for Tears Link. I don't usually think he's hot, but Link with his hair down 😍 Also, there needs to be a non-human hotness category because I loved Rauru sooo much (may be VA bias though).
Fire Emblem: Engage was done dirty.
You both look so shnazzy! 😍
Like a dragon ishin is not a remake it’s a re release for the west
Tears of the Kingdom was not enough story at all. I don't think it stood out. If this is good for Zelda, I don't think I should play the rest.
It’s not good for Zelda, people are nuts. Play any of the 3D Zelda’s that aren’t BotW/TotK, and you’ll have a better time. They’re by no means masterpieces of story-telling, but they’re enjoyable and have likeable, unique characters.
this needs chapters (ಠ_ಠ)
Final Fantasy XVI should have been in most disappointing.
Starfield 100% most disappointing game
Had to stop listening because y'all were dropping too many spoilers
Zelda does not have a good story.
