Make Simple Strong Shelves for French Cleat Garage Storage (New Garage Workshop Part 2)

  • Here's a surprisingly strong shelf that i made pretty simply. Will it support my weight plus all the junk on it, or will it collapse leaving me on the floor in a puddle of my own failure to build a simple shelf? Watch and find out. It hold up, though, so if that was really the cliffhanger to keep you watching, well, too bad. i spoiled it. Darth Vader is Luke's father by the way and Bruce Willis was a ghost the whole time.

    Great video. Love the captioning. I've tripped over my stuff that is all over the garage so many times. This is the nth video that will eventually lead me to do something about it.

    Seeing corded drills is like seeing a classic car on the road. Such an odd thing to see.

      I prefer classic cars and corded drills both. The tools mainly because they have more power and don't die. I have a cordless Dewalt drill and impact wrench in my work truck, they are great but the power varies with the charge and they always die at the least convenient time. Corded drill is more powerful and never dies. I might die tripping over the cord, but that's another issue lol

      @@PaulsGarage Yeah, definite advantages and disadvantages to both systems. As a simple home DIYer, I prefer cordless. But yeah, suddenly running out of battery power is inconvenient.

      @@dfhowes I have a circular saw that I have known most of my life (from my dad). What makes it last? You can replace the bearings and races. As long as you can easily deal with the wear parts, old tools will last forever.
      Had a fridge that lasted around 40 years. Not the best installation. Just worked and worked and worked. Finally couldn't get the replacement for the coolant. Our next fridge, a fridge with electronics in it, failed 3 times in 8 years - always the same time - motor board. Because of the compression location as related to the motor board (yes, the latter was close to the other), failures were going to happen quite often.

    I wish I would have seen this before building two sets of framed two level 8 foot shelves. They function fine, but these allow for so much more customization.

    A bit late watching this one. I've started putting up French cleats in my garage shop. A really good system. Like you, I'm in the process of hanging all my hammers on them. Good to be getting them off the floor and out of drawers. I've been doing a lot of rearranging and organizing the last couple of years and boy does it help.

    I’m probably preaching to the choir but having all your stuff organized with easy access makes working on projects soooooooo much more enjoyable and faster. I just finished cleaning up my garage workshop, not at the level your doing, and I never want to go back to the over stuffed, everything everywhere, no space to work properly setup ever again.

    Finally! Someone who builds a large shelf out of French Cleats. An awesome video! I'm going to make a 2ft deep by 4ft wide Desk like this.

    why hasn't anybody thought about this before? so simple and inexpensive and quick to make. Everybody needs shelves! the net should be full of videos with this idea, yet there is nothing.

    100% agree on peg board. I moved into this house 18 years ago and did french cleats. Have yet to move anything on them. Next time I'm gonna just cover the wall with 1/2" ply

    My friends 'discovered' boxes in the attic that hadn't been opened since they moved, 20 years ago. I recently found stuff dated July '95 that I had no memory of. Almost three decades. Boxes are the worst !

    • @PaulsGarage
      @PaulsGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I knew one person who told me if they don't open a box for 3 years they just throw it out without looking inside lol

      @@PaulsGarage Oh and I wanted to mention that I ended up going with a "Windsor" woodworking bench from harbor freight which is surprisingly decent (except the drawers aren't that great). I also added retractable workbench casters from Amazon so I can wheel it around, but you can also retract the casters so that the workbench is more solid for workbench-y type hammering and sawing things.

    Be careful with your finger, at minute 4:12 it is very exposed to the saw blade.
    Many greetings

  • @TheOriginalFreak
    @TheOriginalFreak 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The saw only goes up to 50 Degrees because to cut at 60, you set it a 30 and then flip the work piece, assuming it has parallel sides to maintain the angle.
    Not ideal, but a design the manufacturers often use to keep costs down and reflects the existing ingenuity of the trade as guys have been using then that way for decades as a saw with a 60+ degree range hasn't been affordable for most craftsmen for the last 100 years.

    • @TheOriginalFreak
      @TheOriginalFreak 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To clarify, by "Flip", I meant rotate 90 degrees. My bad for not being more clear.
      The piece you're cutting will stick out from the saw instead of riding along the rail.
      You use a speed square, jig, etc. on the waste side of the saw to hold your piece in place while cutting.
      This will work for this project as the cut is short (a few inches), but would not work on something with a deep cut like some crown moulding.
