I forgot to mention bioactive components! She has isopods. I will be adding mealworms + beetles.
I heard it’s impossible to keep isopods alive in a uromastyxs enclosure because the humidity is too low, if you have success keeping them alive please share how, I would find it really helpful
How are u keeping the isopods alive with it so dry?

Not impossible but it does take trial and error! Things like mealworms and beetles definitely do much better in arid set ups :)
But they’re vegetarians? Does she not eat them?
I’m planning to get a yellow Nigerian uromastyx after Christmas I have been researching and I think they will be the best fit for me. Wish me luck!

This that and the other... Been watching and listening about the Uromastyx. Saw so many considerations on the substrate and that sand is not a primary in their environment. holds too much moisture and they do not do well in too much moisture. Also , rocks are primary in their environment and retains heat too...however: I am curious how your setup worked!
it worked out great! Perfect temps, perfect humidity, she really thrived in this set up! I had to tear it apart when we moved because it was too heavy, so its not as exciting right now, but I can't wait to redo it and go all out even more this next time!

yes!! I have lots of care guides in the works! they just take a bit of time and work to prep for lol! Shes getting a new enclosure, so once thats in and set up her care guide will be moved to top of the list :)

Id go for a uro for a first time! We have an ackie at work and their sensitivity to humidity being too high/low during shedding stresses me out 😂 I have 0 stress with chalupa! The hardest part with them is just making sure your lighting is correct and you have access to nutritional greens! Shes one of my easiest animals🤗
Definitely a uro! I LOVE my little bro! Dr. Skuttlebutt lives in a massive viv in my kitchen and hangs out with me and watches me cook every day! I highly recommend uros! Great temperament and they’re vegan! No bugs! 😁

ZA Reptiles Nice! Uromastyx are a lizard I want to get in the future and I really want to do a bioactive their enclosure. I’m just worried since even though they’re mainly herbivores, they do rarely eat insects and I know it’s not good for them if they eat too many. Are you worried she might start eating the clean up crew?
thats not something Im too worried about :)

Not gonna lie my fave part of your channel is that we have all the same lizards lol like nobody has an iguana anymore so I love that you do, you helped A LOT when I was first getting my little lizard loves. Obvi I also have a yellow uromastyx but mine is named Evan. Ps. Does chalupa eat salad? Bc Evan only eats seeds

wow thank you so much!!! 😄 and yes surprisingly they are doing totally fine! I havent installed a light for the plants in her enclosure yet, so I wasnt sure how theyd do, but they are all still alive! 😂
@@zareptiles is there a list of safe succulents? I had a hard time determining what was ok and not with allot of them.
Does the styrofoam and grout combo work in semi aquatic environments? I have an aquatic turtle and I want to use this in the dry(ish) part of her enclosure. It would not be submerged but she would climb on it while wet.
I would look into things like pond shield and drylock for something like that. Your best bet would be to ask those in the aquarium hobby what they recommend:)
can this withstand the heat of their basking bulbs?

hopefully! Ive got a lot of care guides that have been requested that I now have to get through since Ive had most my animals for atleast a year and they have their new enclosures! But uros are definitely on the list 😁

She hasnt tried to, but In the event that she were to, I make sure all plants I use are reptile safe :) The only part of the background I have to clean is the ledge because she designated that her litter box 🙄 I just get in there with some paper towel, cleaner, and a scrub bush 😂
I got canyon isopods and they keep dying. Have a chuckwalla. I hear the isopods need moisture but how can I keep it moist when it’s so hot? I hear moisture is bad for chucks
So I didn’t have great luck keeping this particular set up bioactive, BUT with some of my other drier set ups that I had some success with I would keep one moist area (for example overfilling the water dish so that under the water dish would be a wet spot) because it would give the pods somewhere moist to retreat to. A chuckwalla would be a good scenario to bring up to a bioactive group on facebook to see if they have any tricks and tips!
Are those love plants? If yes how do keep the humidity out? How do you water them?
Yes! They are succulents, so they are meant for drier environments so humidity isn’t a problem

She’s very good about leaving them alone :)

Its not too bad! I don’t make them for others because it’s very time consuming, but also I wouldn’t even begin knowing how to ship them so they don’t get damaged and they are heavy. Try switching to drylock! Check out my latest corn snake upgrade to see that compared to grout. Its so much easier and my new preferred method

How did you attach the uvb fixture to the ceiling?
the light fixtures come with screws and fixtures that you attach to the ceiling and then you just clip the light fixture in
ever have issues with clean up crew eating at the foam? Like the mealworms and beetles.
I have not, because the foam is covered with many layers of grout and then sealed :)
Sounds a bit dangerous. Polystyrene with a hotspot that warm.
Water based polycrylic - used all the time in custom builds! Some people will use it to seal their enclosures as well. HOWEVER, I will say that those hot basking temperatures are not aimed at the custom background. The basking rock is what reaches those temperatures

Sorry this is late - 60" is great, but I would go 24" minimum for depth. Height depends on if you are installing your lighting inside the enclosure or outside. For inside the enclosure I would go 24" min. Outside the enclosure I've seen people do 15", but personally Chalupa likes to climb, so I would go 18" min
How have u been keeping the isopods alive with the arid environment?
What kind of topsoil do you use? I just bought some but it has bark chips in it which worries me.

I was also wondering if it is required to feed them a omnivore diet because when you look it up they are herbivores but I see youtubers feeding them mealworms also
Yup, they need to eat the proper vegetables and insects
Vitamin powdering and misting the food sometimes are also good ideas
They are mainly herbivorous feeding on greens, lentils, and seeds. They can eat insects but only on occasion, every 3 weeks to a month.
Also do you run into a problem with the crickets eating your background? Ours did. It was annoying.
Why not paint those vents with the same color paint?
The paint would likely chip right off the vents and I didnt want chipped paint falling into the substrate :)

I just used a non sanded grout, then non toxic craft paints, and then coated with water based polycrylic. everything can be bought at home depot and walmart :)
Where did you get chalupa, and was it a wild caught buy
Chalupa was a rehome/rescue. I got her with my leopard gecko Queso. They were being housed together in an 18x18x18 exo terra.
is the humidity ok with all the plants?
yes! they are all succulents so they are meant for drier environments! Also the deeper your substrate is, the lower layers can remain damper for the plants and clean up crew, while the upper layer dries out for the animal :)
What amount of gallons do you recommend for a uro??
This is a 4x2x2 which in my opinion should be the minimum for smaller uro species. it ends up being roughly 120 gallons I believe

I hope you didnt burn the Styrofoam in your house, that stuff is horrible to breath in id recommend just using a knife instead
typically I use a knife, but I wanted smoother edges and more texture. It was done outside with all necessary precautions :)

She hasnt paid any attention to hers, but that is something to keep in mind and why its important to research plants before putting them in with your animals. I research every plant before putting it in with my animals, so I can make sure it is safe, that way should they make an attempt to eat it, it’ll do no harm :)
