- This is the Dungeons and Dragons 5e Paladin Class Guide. Paladins are great defender, damage dealer and all around powerful class that's flexible enough to also fulfil some healing and support roles. The price for playing this class is that it comes with some roleplay expectation the player need to fulfil.

..........weeb.
jk making saber for a d&d campaign sounds like an excellent idea. i can't believe i never considered it.
From the United King
I’m looking for him and
I’m going to California!
We have a gentleman of taste here :-)
Ironboy32 I was thinking Agrias
im stealing that outfit design for a oathbreaker(my paladin broke there oath to save the unlife of a undead who was innocent
A video game should be made with this art and animation style.
It will be glorious.
I would love to know what program you use for these animations.
DeathByProcrastination adobe
Like Runescape?
AdventureQuest
For newbies, I wanna recommend a fun little Oath of Vengeance build I've come out with a while ago. Human, take variant (Great Weapon Master) and take great weapon fighting. Use a Maul as a weapon. Your turn for murderfying one thing in particular is: Vow of Enmity ( It's a bonus action ), attack with Great Weapon Mastery feature (-5 to attack roll, +10 to damage. You are very unlikely to miss with -5 because of advantage) and dump as much smite as you want into the poor victim (It is not an action to use smite, and it can be used as many times a turn as you want, though not for the same attack). Repeat the second half if you have multiattack. This comes out with an absolutely stupid amount of damage, and is just kind of a fun stupid lolcannon build.
Why the maul?
2d6 for damage rolls vs 1d12 which will normally skew damage to the middle of the range, but great weapon fighting style lets you reroll damage dice that come up 1 or 2. Basically with 2d6 if your dice came up 1 & 6 you would only reroll the 1 so you end up with something like 4 & 6.
TLDR: higher damage average vs other great weapons
Andrew Matiukas maul is 2 handed? Spaced out, but I normally thing greatsword with GWM
A maul is a tree stump on a stick (kinda like a even bigger sledge hammer), it very much is a 2 handed weapon.
Been waiting for this one
Currently rolling a Goliath Paladin of Conquest, check out Volo's and Xanathar's
Walked right into a bandit camp and demanded their surrender which I got by rolling a nat 20 on intimidation
Who knew it was hard to argue with a 8ft tall, 550lbs, half giant covered in full plate?
Sombody toucha my rogue!
Good to see you wrapping up this awesome series!
I've been playing D&D 5e for over 2 years now and wish I had found something like this when I started I would've answered a lot of my questions. I hope in the future you keep going with this with some of the other subclasses because this is seriously good stuff
Honestly, I'm a little bummed to see the series end. It was REALLY good & I enjoyed it very much! It even made me seriously consider playing 5th edition.
I love the way you made a story with all the characters, and it's satisfying to finally see them finish their dungeon crawl!
With those twin drills your paladin is sure to a great leader, but hopefully she doesn't lose her head.
Heimskr, Prophet of Talos :-(((( this feels like a Mami Tomoe joke and I’m hurt by it
Kasane Teto the Holy Beheado
I played a paladin like Judge Dredd, Lawful Neutral. He would smack down any lawbreakers he saw, but as long as the law allowed it, he would ignore any heinous actions
Mr Freddo Renton paladins really shouldn’t be anything but Lawful Good or Evil.
@@jamesduke4253 that's up to the dm
@@jamesduke4253 sounds unimaginative and boring. Think outside the box.
@@jamesduke4253 have you even seen the oath of the crown paladin?
@@Bruh-lq7ev depended on the area. He was constantly researching the local laws and bothering the town criers for legal business. That's how we stopped it getting on everyone else's toes. There was one island that only accepted giant stone wheels as currency, and this research meant out earthbending druid could get us whatever we wanted.
Woop! What a fantastic Series. Not sure what you are gonna work on next!
Just brainstorming here: Maybe an overview for GM's using the DMG and Xanathar's about building a balanced campaign? Episode on...
1) Intro & World Building: Creating a world, creating a villain, creating hooks, how not to be salty when players miss your cool sub plot. Small intro to the planes and multi-verse.
2) Magic & Knowledge: Custom Spells, Scrolls, The importance of spell casting NPCs, performing nature checks and arcana checks to learn information about the world. How and when to describe magic to players.
3) Building a Fair Challenge: Creating Encounters, Environmental Challenges, Survival & rations. Should you care about cary capacity. The importance of managing Resting and vs encounters.
4) Balancing Loot: Some basics on magic items, managing an economy (good luck on that one), Magic Item tables and rolling for loot, Friendly NPCs and having large groups of NPC allies and how to balence it all.
5) Dungeons, Traps & Secrets. How too generate a dungeon, how to populate it, tools for generating dungeons (donjon.bin.sh/5e/dungeon/) What NOT to tell players and how!
Maybe something like this? I dunno tho, you have a good style go with your instinct cos they are spot on!
In a campaign of Hoard of The Dragons, I am playing an Aasimar Paladin of Devotion, and I have to say, I love it. Even though my character tries to reach to perfection, I do try to play her with flaws. The biggest one being anger issues, and I must say, I love it. After an accident that resulted in one player killing another, my Paladin almost broke the oath but stopped herself from smacking the guy with a Warhammer (Bludgeoning weapon for the win.) and wrecked the wall instead.
She tries to teach others of her faith, being it Torm, but she does not force it on others if they don't want to listen. I am having a great time with little argue with a party member that treats gods as children, it's a little dodge and weaves every week.
Though I really recommend reading "Powered Keg of Justice". It's a little story about a Paladin from one campaign, and honestly,
I strive to roleplay as good as that guy.
Also, have to say I enjoyed story you have made with all these class guides, and I have to thank you for making me learn about D&D quicker, and by doing so, having more fun, and making me less confused.
Love it! : )
And remember young paladins, don't kill Lord Shojo in a zealous frenzy, or the Twelve Gods will strike you down and revoke your powers, and no one wants "fired by a divine bunny rabbit" in their resume.
This class guide is probably a better campaign than at least one officially recognized D&D5 campaign.
So glad to see it up! You've done SUCH a great job
I've been waiting for so long for this video, CJ. Every Monday for the past three weeks I've hoped it would be released, but it wasn't. I knew I'd have to wait for something this epic, because of the quality of the animation and the time it takes to put it all together. Keep it up, big guy!
I hadn't realised until now, looking at all the class guides introductions and conclusions reveals a mini campaign, nice work!
I'm waiting for the whole day for this upload! Yasssss we have our girl! She so pretty & strong 😍
thanks for an amazing series CJ! i've learned allot from this, probebly would never have figgured out the magic system if not for all this! Can't wait for what's next.
I kinda chuckled at 1:30 with Serio and Pally() leaving Grent and Leraline on the floor without stabilizing them. All in all, all the class guides are a great introduction to the classes, especially now that i have started playing with some friends. Though now that you're done with the class guides for D&D, are more D&D coming up? I would love for you to follow this series up with an introductory guide for dungeon masters and encounter/world/NPC building.
I am currently looking at a few possible options.
Just started D&D'ing recently, this was a great help finalising my second character, a homebrew Zora paladin.
Logic: Wears a full plate armor, is armed with a rapier.
i mean... tbh... if your Dex is higher than your Str and you wanna grab heavy armor mastery that really helps keep that hp up... why not?
I ts just VERY heavy
You need at least 17 Strength to wear plate armour though.
Edit: I was wrong, you only need 15. Still, if you're going to max out Dex, why take plate over something like studded leather?
You can use strength with a finesse weapon just as well as using dexterity.
Sure, but then you might as well use a non-finesse weapon that deals more damage.
Playing a Level 8 paladin atm. Before grabbing my 3rd level slot I want to dip my toes into 2 levels of Fighter. An extra fighting style and Action Surge is definitely worth the wait.
Paladin is my favorite class in just about anything. D&D 2e, 3.5, 5e, Pathfinder (never played 4e), JRPGs, and anything else that has them available. Some of my favorite characters in Final Fantasy are paladins. Cecil, Agrias, and Beatrix. I'm playing a Paladin in an ongoing Hoard of the Dragon Queen game.
With the class guide over what’s next for this channel?
Inquisitor Thomas my guess? Races or extended classes
ARTIFICER AND MYSTIC
Wolf Namina well he’s already doing archetypes from Xanathar’s Guide, Sword Coast’s guid, And the DMG so not at the moment, perhaps we’ll see them when they are moved out of Unearthed Arcana and officially added to some supplements.
The character names are too good. Love the spicy meme included in the end too
Quick TLDR on the other oaths:
Ancients
versatile story-wise, can represent either a dedication to old ancient nature gods, shrines, etc or a focus/dedication of light, love, passion, etc.
(I totally have a swashbuckling drunk passionate ancients paladin as a back up)
Mechanically:
you're going for that level 7 aura of halving damage from spells for everyone within 10 ft. Rest is alright.
Vengeance:
Story wise, pretty versatile again and can represent an unwavering dedication to something regardless of morals, to a specific hatred of something.
Prone to edgy stories.
Probably, by far, the most played archetype.
Mechanically:
Channel divinity as a bonus action to give yourself advantage against that target for a minute. Nuff said.
Xanathar's:
Conquest: Brutal Templar crusader, basically the facism oath and a go to for a lawful evil character.
Mechanically, awesome fear/ aura control domination stuff.
Redemption:
Can be played either as A. an über devotion pally who wasn't pacifistic enough or B. a once criminal/ immoral individual who's on a path of redemption. There's more ways to play it.
Mechanically: very defensive and support oriented. Great spell choices.
Sword coast adventures guide: Oath of the Crown.
Story wise: as it says on the tin.
mechanically: pretty much a mix of redemption and conquest imo, with some decent support/defensive/control stuff.
When I first found your channel I couldn't watch because i couldn't understand you much so I stopped watching then I found your channel again and I can understand you perfectly
A combo I personally like to run as an Oath of Devotion Paladin is taking the Dueling fighting style, picking up the Polearm master feat, and then grab a quarterstaff (wield it one handed and get a shield), a standard paladin will deal (with no divine smiting) 1d6+5 and 1d4+5 damage. Outclassing even greatswords in maximum damage output. Then once you unlock your extra attack you'll get to deal 2d6+1d4+15 damage assuming all attacks hit. Which is pretty fantastic for a 5th level character
I'm playing my first paladin in my current campaign, I'm usually a sorcerer so it's a bit nerve-wracking, but this has calmed me down a lot
when i subscribed to your channel i was wondering if you will upload a paladin video, now i know this is the best channel to learn how to play D&D, i will promove it on my channel and streams, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!! honor and glory!!!!
best combo i found , Trition Paladin with ancient oath. perfect defence
Here is my second favourite/favourite class depending on mood.
Mainly because my first ever Paladin was a Dragonborn and had the Knight background and 3 Kobold Retenues.
I have now watched all of yur class guides, and i have to say thise are perfect for new players :) I have made a point of directing new players in my game to this channel for an easy to follow video guide on how to play and what classes do :) Thank you so much for your hard work. What will you be working on next? (If thats something you can give us hints about ;) )
Well, I have a few things in mind. I will announce it on the channel once I have something in mind.
I really enjoyed playing a Paladin during the playtesting. I played a Dragonborn paladin of Vengeance, sworn to Tempus because the world was set on Faerun. He had a great big
Maul, and I had a lot of fun smashing bad guys into bits. I really like how they did the divine smite in this edition, and making "smite plus different effects" into spells was a stroke of genius. I was really fond of... I think it was called thundering smite? For knocking monsters away from my squishier allies. It also got used once to open a fortress door after goblinoids had taken over a fortress and our sorcerer's convoluted "disguise and talk our way in" strategy started to tank. Still, he got us to the door so I could smash it down without being peppered with arrows, so it wasn't a *total* failure.
You should go over all the races and what they are all about and what they are best suited for
That farnese artwork for the paladin xD
Awesome video and animation. Though as a DM I have disliked that Paladin oathbreaker is so powerful it nearly encouraged to go down that path.
I made a human paladin whose god had only one rule which was basically humanity first and purge heretics. This gave me alotta leeway and bonuses when talking to human NPCs but had a huge disadvantage when talking to non humans. My gm said "for every atrocity I will add -1 to your charisma rules against non humans". I thought little of it until I got -8. Then I learned to stop burning down every elven village I stumbled on. I had a fun time with my character and the primary human kingdom became the superpower. Until the other races had enough of my characters shit and had millions of gold pieces on my head. Then my Rouge betrayed me and I got executed. Long story short, the humans held out but were eventually conquered and all humans became slaves, except the Rouge of course. He lived a cushy and wealthy life.
This reminds me of Alexander Anderson for some reason. The whole *PURGE THE HERETICS!!* deal.
It's always the spaget!
Absolutely awesome videos. I can't imagine the time you spent on these! Thank you so much. It's a bit hard for me to read the text sometimes, and I was thinking maybe it would be more readable if it were not all capitalized? I am really not sure about that though just maybe it is worth trying. Anyways have a great day, I am meeting on friday with my group playing as a mighty human paladin! :D
A fantastic series. These vids make bringing new people into my games a breeze. I'm curious about what's next for your channel, D&D or otherwise.
While all of this was amazing the best part and something few bring up is that a paladin's oath is personal to them and not a standard to which others should be held up to. Thank you for pointing this out. It's likely the best advice I've heard given to potential paladins
Love your videos. Are you gonna do anything for the other archetypes for the other classes?
Or anything for Xanathar Guide to everything?
I can do quick reviews of them, I guess.
I’d like to see this but only if you enjoy making them
Can you discuss about mounts regarding combat and stuff. I'm really confused about it regarding movement, attacking it, feats with the mount, getting up and everything else
Great series, paladin is my favorite class so I'm glad you saved the best for last.
For me to become an oath breaker is doing a major act that does not effect the oath, example: killing innocent. but doing something to further progress of good does not count, example: stealing an artifact to stop an evil god or being.
CJ you rock man your videos are easy to follow and very well edited and I love art .
Best thing ever, Smiting on a crit. I have a Half-Orc Crown Paladin with the Sentinel feat. This has basically turned me into a brick wall so thick that in corridors less than 20ft wide it is almost impossible to get by me. If I was willing to lose some AC and then get the Polearm master feat, that would get even wider.
Forgot to add this CJ
This is a very hard kind of class to balance
Think of them to some extent as the jack of all trades masters of none kind of class
They are good at fighting in the frontlines with proficiencies in all armor and weapons
While at the same time further boosting this with their use of spell slots either for spells or their smites
They can even heal with lay on hands and cleansing touch, not to mention certain other spells such as the ever awesome aura of vitality and circle of power, they also have something like lesser restoration and remove curse
The one thing that makes this class hard to balance and play is
It is very MAD
How you assign and decide to boost which ability score depends on your intention for this build
You may need to bump up str or dex for better chances to hit, don better armor and increasing your chances for your hit for the sake of your smite to even work
But neglecting your cha will make your spell save dc and related spell modifiers just very substandard
On the flipside increasing your cha helps a lot for your spell save dc and modifier
But majority of your good spells are smites
Which only work if your melee weapon attack even hits
So not having enough for even your attack modifiers can waste your spell slot for smites and other concentration spells
This isnt even talking about how important your con is for your concentration checks on your smites for example
Really plan out if you really do want to be a paladin
They are my most commonly created and personal fave class too
They for me also require some planning
I wonder, will there be more to this series? I was thinking you could explain monster types. It would be interesting to see how it would be done. I would understand if it would be too vague as to explain what they are and how they are to be, but it's just something I thought would be good food for thought.
I will make more of these major videos once I have finished preparing all the necessary assets.
Also something funny from the wording of lay on hands
It didnt say it cannot work on the paladin themselves
So following the same logic as the cure wounds spell(bearing a range of touch)
It means they can use lay on hands for themselves
Perfect for more evil alignment paladins, or just plain selfish vengeance paladins who prefer to keep themselves alive
Witch Knight
The Paladin Warlock Multiclass combo is one you may want to try
Especially Hexblade so you can boost your cha and con
Then leave your str at 15 to don heavy armor
Since you can use cha mod for weapon attack and damage rolls instead of str or dex
wow this is a well done animatic
no shit lmao I found your channel last night and thought "awww there's no paladin video yet."
Get out of my head Charles
Isaac Merquise lol is that a reference from X-Men
I'd recommend doing a multiclassing guide. The only reason why I can do it is because Roll20 does all the calculations for me.
If I remember correctly, CJ was going to cover dungeon-mastering next right? I've been looking at several guides as to how to run a campaign, but I've been looking forward to CJs the most!! Great job explaining dnd in an informative and fun way from start to finish
Question for any and all. I want to make a Paladin/Fighter/Barbarian. The idea is they are a Paladin that took an oath of vengeance that is willing to do anything to smite all evil from the world and has a righteous fury to them. To this end I feel a Chaotic good Alignment is the best, they will follow rule of society to a point But if it gets in the way of killing a great evil then they will do what they feel is needed. This covers 3 of the tenants and doesn't really effect the last one. But I was wondering, can a Paladin be Chaotic good and if so what Deity do you suggest?
Artificer *Artificer* *ARTIFICER*
Lovely series. Great work.
Also, that paladin is really adorable
Three big suggestions with Paladins. If you are a human variant and starting at the lower levels start with Heavy Armor Master (-3 to all mundane slashing, piercing and bludgeon damage) and go with Dueling as your combat style. This lets you wade into combats with confidence vs most low level monsters and humans. Acting like a Shining Armored tank that can deliver damage or healing (helping with death saves) where you need to support the party. really goes far to helping the first levels be less deadly for everyone.
Second, when you RP always move from the position of your paladin is an example of doing what is right. If the party does things you can RP him trying to talk them into being good ONCE. After that go with the I will show them the right way. They can lie right in front of you and you just can walk away or watch as your character just knows this will blow up and laughs when it does. You are there to help them see what the value your oath and your religion. When it comes to your party, your faith has it that anything that happens is along your gawd’s will and if he/she does not like it then they will give you a sign. You are an Exemplar and not an Enforcer.
Lastly, when you want to really make an impact, choose the Oath of vengeance and the moment you can get charger. You hit him with your divine at very short range and then you can charge in and get charge damage bonus +5 and then you toss a smite on it...when it all works you will either send the bad guy to your gawd or get him much closer to it.
Do Aura of protection stack if there are more then one Paladin or do you just get the higher bonus?
Another great video! Thanks for your hard work!
Seeing that you made a new vid and it made my day. 😊
I could be my love for Space Marines but I like vengeance the most
How about a paladin, who gets everyone on the party arrested, for a quest heist, that he wasn't actually part off, like he was sleeping when it happened. What are you supposed to do with THAT dude!?
I play a rogue assassin, and I definitely know that my character archetype can't possibly trust that person ever again. What am I supposed to do AFTER that 30 fun days in jail he caused by snitching us all? Let him guard my unconscious character during long rests, and continue fight side by side to him as if nothing ever happened? Because I'm thinking, a dagger in the back is more suitable at this point..
Back me up guys. Am I wrong or what?
There are two kinds of players, those that understand Batman and Superman are Lawful Good, and those who don’t pay attention while reading the alignment description.
I've been working on a Halfling Paladin who's just incredibly insecure, convinced he can never live up to the expectations placed on him and is just in the midst of a constant existential crisis, it's pretty fun.
Wow XD the spaghet meme
Also i wish you put our a video about the little story you we're doing on this series I'm very interested
single means 1 of something, signle is not a word
Any chance you could do a video on the new class Artificer ,or the one class Blood hunter that’s being used on the new Critical role campaign?
2:09 anti signle
😥 Uh no... I won't hear the end of this...
It's ok, I really appreciate these videos, I'm running for a group of noobs, so you are helping me out so much.
s
congratulations, you have now heard the end of "this"
please read it out loud so it actually works. thanks
Also balanced only has one E.
Awesome, Thank you CJ for the video.
Its a shame it took so long for the Artificer to come out since they weren't able to be apart of this series.
who would u guys say is the best defensive tank paladin: Ancient Paladin (control and defensive spells/abilities) or Redemption Paladin (supportive spells and abilities)?
So I can create a chaotic good paladin? Cool!😊👍🏻 I always wanted to create a Robin Hood kind of paladin👍🏻😉
If it's not too much trouble can u make a series going over all the archetypes
A blonde paladin with twin drills and a smug attitude
I SEE YOU ARE A MAN OF TASTE AS WELL
That's pretty much the Paladin I played.
I want to play as a SPESS MEHREEN paladin. Just to scream Dawn of War quotes everywhe- *FOR TEH EMPRAAAAHHHH!*
My paladin:goes in a crussade to purify this land off lychs, necromancers, and undeads
My party:oh thats cool
My paladin:fucking destroys a mass of necromancers
My party:thats not how...
My paladin:he didnt surrender..
That's it.
I wonder what's next?
Do you think you will ever make one of these for the artificer?
I actually found your channel again after a long time because i remember when i forst really started picking up 5e, these videos were the BEST i could find to learn!
And i cometh to you for help again, cuz artificers got me lost in the sauce @_@
Can you make a video of how to make magical items in d&d
Could we possibly get a guide on how to play artificer?
Great job, thank you!
hey CJ, could you make videos on Matt Mercer's Homebrew Classes (gun slinger, blood hunter, Lingering soul) ?
like if you agree =-)
I'm not sure if you've mentioned it in another video, but when are you going to go over the extra xanathars subclasses? And keep up the great work, these videos have taught me a lot
Cj cj cj cj cj!!!
I really like your content!!!
Hope i can play D&D again
Thanks btw from australia
Hey for every action I do like divine sense or lay of hand(sorry im new)do we all have to roll a 1d20 to make it happen
hmm... I am creating a Tiefling Paladin, this will be interesting
Could someone explain how the Paladin starts with a holy symbol
It hurt to see what happened to the Paladin after tsr went out of business. The lines between cleric and paladin are increasingly blurred.
For the next series, how about talking about Xanafar’s Guide to everything?
What if a Tenet forces you to break another? Like obey who have just authority over you?
Finally the best class thx
Anyone else think that the Paladin's spell casting ability should be wisdom?
Paladins are usually leader-like characters that lead a squad into battle, they are the frontline tanks that protect the weak. Charisma just fits that way more, since you're meant to be charismatic
Can you please do a race guide series
Some time after the DM series ends I will do something like that.
I am making a new character who is dead serious about worshiping her god and protects the weak and slays her enemies in the name of that god. I just don't know if i should make her a Cleric or a Paladin. Can someone help me?
Both can work, it really depends on your play style. Paladin if you prefer melee and cleric if you prefer to take on more supportive role.
She looks a lot like that character from berserk :)
