- *** ERROR CORRECTION***
Hello everyone, as some commenters have pointed out, I made a few mistakes in this video. Here are the corrections:
4:16 - The Dragon Ancestor feature at level 1 works with all dragons.
6:14 - The font of Magic feature uses Bonus Action instead of Action.
Thanks for catching the mistakes, everyone. I'm reading as many comments as possible and please feel free to give any kind of feedback.
*** END OF ERROR CORRECTION***
This is the Dungeons and Dragons 5e Sorcerer class guide. Sorcerers prefer quality over quantity. Unlike wizards, they know fewer spells, but they have extraordinary control over them. WIth their metamagic feature, they can enhance the effects of their spells, making them extra potent and sometimes even discover new use for some boring old spells.

D&d spellcasters in a nutshell
Wizards - Students who study for hours a night for straight A's
Sorcerers - Prodigies who just need the basic gist
Warlocks - The one who sleeps with the teacher
phatman274 what about the clerics?
Not sure,
Teacher's Pet?
I don't think that applies to the clerics
Maybe student teacher? Didn't really give them much thought
I think the warlock pays the kid who already passed the class to do his homework and sleeping with the teacher is the bard's role.

A old but a good one.
Despite the name, Dr Strange is not a d&d sorcerer. He’s a tome pact great old one Warlock and wizard multiclass.
Scarlet Witch would have been a much more appropriate d&d Sorcerer proxy. She’s straight up wild magic sorcerer.
I never realized that the Scarlet witch had her skin change colors randomly when she cared a spell, I always figured she had a bit more control. Huh, guess I didn't know anything
You do realise fluff like that is just flavour that you can change/ignore right? The point is her magic is random and chaotic, which is exactly what wild sorcerer is all about.
he's a warlock? did I miss the patron?
@@marcopohl4875 in the comics he calls different entities to cast spells
I got to say, all the easter eggs in this series are really great. Not only are they good as a normal easter egg, they can also serve as inspirational examples on how to play such a character.
Hey DST, just want to say one of the most well executed channels on youtube. Very well done simple and effective animations while being informative and entertaining. 10/10 bravo.
Thanks, Tyler!
I feel like there should be more classes that cast from intelligence
Well there are, fighter and rogue both have advancements that casts off of intelligence (Arcane Trickster and Eldritch Knight) Also the wizard is typically reguarded as a very expansive class, so you could argue its multiple classes :P
Yeah, I kind of want to try an Elf Sorcerer, Bard or Warlock and I want the bump to Cha, but don't want Sunlight Sensitivity...
Sekan13 fair enough, I didn’t think about those
Only drow get sunlight sensitivity, I think halfelf and human are the strongest races for charisma based casters. That said sunlight sensitivity can be dealt with if you use save based spells
Totally agree. Drow Bard actually seems very strong, and an interesting concept. For Warlock I want that Agonizing Blast at +3 to start with without the Sunlight Sensitivity to the attack roll thougth lol. Half Elf/Human is the logical choice, the lack of any Armor/Weapon racial proficiencies makes me want a lvl 1 in Fighter(Hello, Con-save proficiency). So many characters to try, so little time lol.
CJ, you have no idea how much I love this series. It got me into dnd, which has practically taken over my life at this point. Thank you.
Any one else saw figet spinner badge on wild sorcerer?
I noticed it

Lol I was just going to point that out but then I saw your comment 😂
yes. i was looking through the comments to see if anyone else noticed
YASS MY FIRST EVER DND CLASS!! tbh, i wanted to play a spellcaster that used a rapier and persuasion to fight... or specifically, to stop fights. i ended up as a half-elf sorceror with a draconic background and i was op since i dipped 6 levels in fighter and kinda melted everyone that couldn't be persuaded to put their shield down.
sounds like a bard was what you may have been looking for.
Subtle counter spell so the enemys don't know you do it thus can't counter spell and heightend spell because heightend meteor swarm is a thing, twinned is also good with the power words and the such, sorcerers make great specialist, as he said
Subtle counterspell, this is pretty funny.
The first animation with the battle was actually pretty cool. I was enjoying that. Your information was also very helpful for my stone sorcerer and gave me more confidence in using it over a wizard.
Holy shit I was just thinking about making a sorcerer as I got the notification for the video! Keep up the good work!
I love this animation style. I'd like to see a one-shot or a whole campaign played using this animation style. It might help new players understand how to run their characters better.
Really love all of these videos. I have been showing them to my D&D players that are completely new to the game and it helps them quite abit.
I do hope that you will consider covering some of the extra classes like Artificer and Mystic as well from Unearthed Arcana, or even go into abit more detail about the other paths in classes and stuff added in from Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
Sweet, sister, sadistic, SORCERER
Been waiting patiently for the sorcerer class guide, so worth the wait, the amount of detail in these guides is amazing!! Thank you! :D
I would love to see a series of videos on the options that were released in Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
Sorcerers in the house!~ Sorcerer for life! ~
LostAxisARA HELL YEAH
applauded in sorceress
I noticed some technical mistakes in the early part of the guide. Doubling a draconic bloodline sorcerer's proficiency bonus works with all dragons; it does not say dragons of the same color. Also, converting between sorcery points and spell slots is a bonus action, not an action.
Thanks for that Ben. I will put up a note these errors soon.
That blend s meme...

Yet another great, enjoyable video from DST.
That gate spell came completely out of 'left field' and I darn near wet myself from laughing so hard!
I really do love your channel/ these videos. I honestly feel comfortable now for if/when my friends & I transition from Pathfinder into 5th Edition. (I'm normally very stubborn & resistant to changing editions of gaming.)
Thank you.

These are some of the best guides I've ever seen
Really love these videos. Can't wait for the epic conclusion!
Honestly, Sorcerer's are my favorite class to play. Love this vid!
I disagree with your assessment of Wild Magic sorcerers--they are fairly balanced out against Draconic sorcerers, and they are good for more than just funniness. They do have some protection from harm via their Tides of Chaos and Bend Luck features--those features don't just make Wild Magic sorcerers more likely to succeed on a hit, you know. There is, of course, the glaring disadvantage of potentially killing everyone every time they cast a spell, but that chance is very low unless they use the Tides of Chaos feature. Also, there are fifty possibilities on the Wild Magic table, and many of them are either harmless or beneficial. If the sorcerer survives to level 14, they even get some control over what their magic surge does--they can roll twice and decide which outcome they want.
Beyond that risk, Wild Magic sorcerers get features that also make them harder to kill--I'd put it about on par with the Draconic origin's defensive features. They can gain advantage on d20 rolls using Tides of Chaos, and alter other creatures' d20 rolls by 1d4 (either positive or negative--the sorcerer decides). This means, among other things, that if someone attacks them and hits, they can try to change that roll to a miss. Where Draconic sorcerers are better protected, Wild Magic sorcerers can "roll" out of harm's way; where Draconic sorcerers can magically charm their way into someone's good graces, Wild Magic sorcerers can bend their luck and increase their chances of just talking their way into favor. Draconic sorcerers can do bonus damage to spells of certain types, but Wild Magic sorcerers can hit even harder when they're lucky. In short, the two origins do similar things with different flavors--the biggest difference is that that Wild Magic sorcerers can't fly without casting a spell to do so, and they also might have feathery beards every once in a while.
And, I mean, if you're that worried about your Wild Magic sorcerer, just be comforted by the idea that they might accidentally turn themselves into a sheep and bolt off into the wilderness, harmlessly leaving the party.
Finally! Thanks for doing all of those, you are awesome!
...Now do a guide for each archetype in all official books. :^)
This is very helpful. About to start a new campaign in 5E. I haven't played since 3.0 and this my first time as a spellcaster. Draconic bloodline sorcerer I will be!
By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth its the Sorcerer Supreme! I love this channel! It is unlike anything else out there! Super primo as always!
I have a sorcerer that is an aasimar but also has a draconic bloodline, a black dragon. So, I’m a cluster of good and evil. When fighting I am ruthless and show no mercy but when communicating, in lawful and reason a lot. My DM was really confused on how my character worked and when I was attempted to be killed off by acid, the dm forgot what color dragon I was and I lived. He still is confused but accepts my character to this day.
i am planning on a variant tiefling divine soul sorcerer with heals, ac boosts and summons
Thank you so much for these videos CJ, they really are helpful getting started and getting to know the classes a bit better!
Important to note that Sorcerers are the only full caster that has proficiency in constitution saving throws. This means they're more likely to be able to keep concentration spells going when they get hit.
The best part of wild magic is that DM's ive met generally hate the wild surge table, and don't make their sorcerers role on it.
So you can often use the class with impunity
That's the meta-metagaming-ception. Nice!
2:25 The guy (Wild Magic) has a fidget spinner xd
Ah, you noticed. 😜
Don't Stop Thinking lol
Jann That is amazing
@@DontStopThinking Its because of his anxiety, right? A common Sorcerer problem... we all know.
I have a bad history with sorcerers, I tend to die as them a lot. Or nearly die. Recently a Divine Soul Sorcerer of mine got nearly killed (knocked out as a campaign cliffhanger) by a Hellhound, and in another campaign, I have a ranger who MCd into the phoenix origin sorcerer (UA). It hasn't affected him too badly for now, at least.
You’re gonna HATE Psykers
Draconic sorcerers get a bonus to charisma skills against any creature of the dragon type but just the one associated with your background.
You mean, "not" just the kind in your background? Because if so, you'd be correct.
Point of contention: Wild Surges in 5E are a lot harder to trigger than you think and are WAY less character harming than 2E's versions of them. Also, this is leaving out some of the beneficial side effects of wild surge effects. Also, just because a wild surge happens does NOT mean the spell didn't happen. Just it didn't happen as expected. There are specific surge effects that DO overwrite a spell, but those are case by case. The biggest downside is when a surge happens you have to have the book handy to look up the random effect.
I really love your videos! keep it up man!
Fantastic! And I learned one or two things I had missed for Illiana. (Also, I'm going to have to go over the errata for her.)
BTW, that was an Iron Man figurine on the bookshelf, wasn't it! ^_^
Yup. I wonder if you realise what the Sorcerer's costume is inspired by.
I'm thinking Dr. Strange.
4:20
CJ corrected himself, you gain this bonus with all dragons no matter your color
WHY IS THIS NOT TRILLION VIEWS ????!!!!!
sagerx TH-cam Algorithm didn't put any levels in Intelligence or Wisdom, and it skipped the Common Sense feat.
that is a really good Reply i must say :D
Sharing the video, also helps.
This is fantastic! Great video! I hope we can get to paladin soon
i love your thoroughness buddy your so apreciated
Oooh I’ve been waiting for this one
thank you very much, this shall help me very much with playing my character and knowing what the hell i'm doing
I'm afraid I don't understand how the Wild Magic origin's drawback works. What dice (and when) should I roll to see if I recover hit points or get hit by fireballs? How do I calculate the damage of the fireballs?
If you're going to talk more about Wild Magic sorcerers in a next video I can wait of course ^_^"
Anyway
Thank you again for your dedicated work, I'm learning way more from your videos than official manuals! :-) Bravo!
whenever you cast any spell as a wild magic sorcerer
you roll a d20
if you get a 1
you roll a d100
then look for the result in the wild magic surge table
A friendly reminder that as Wild Sorcerer you can have Meteor Swarm deal 240 damage on a 40 foot radius. And make your enemy auto-fail saving throw.
or turn them into trees for reasons...
Lv 3 sorcerer: oh this is cool
Lv 20 sorcerer: I AM A GOD
Aw man was hoping to see wild magic sorcerer... everyone else's video covers dragon. HeratigeBut very few people cover wild magic😭
when you have a wild magic sorcerer in the party but its the rouge that accdentally blows up the sun
GIANT SOUL!
GIANT SOUL!
GIANTBSOUL SORCERER !
I have a wild sorcerer I play in D&D Adventure League. He's had wild magic effects go off several times, but thanks to some good party saves, have only negatively effected himself or an enemy.
STILL waiting patiently for the Paladin video... I guess there's about a 95% chance for it to be next now. :)
For empowered spell I reroll numbers 1-3 on the d6 because the odds are you will roll a higher number more often than not.
What is the next class video? I really need help with my paladin, and your videos are the most help
Paladins will be the next class I will be covering. But it will be released only on the first half of January because I couldn't find enough time to work on it since I have to work my day job even at the holiday season.
Don't Stop Thinking this is alright with me, love your videos
1) it is Dragons, not just the color you chose.
2) You can convert SPoints as a BONUS ACTION... Action economy is important.
1:45 hidden fidget spinner
Wild magic
I love your channel. Really makes me wish I could play a game with you. ^_^
Levyathyn i concur
I had just realized, the wild sorcerer has a fidget spinner on his belt
that's pretty frigging wild tbh
So the next character I'll make will be a kenku sorcerer. And his goal will be to become powerful enough to get his wings and finally be able to fly freely without a spell like he's always dreamed of.
id like to point out that you will not get 2 sorcery points if you transform a level 1 spell slot but just 1 because its based off spell level and not the table for tranforming sorcery points into spell slots
These are great, keep it up!
Clerics can benefit too, as 17th level cleric and 3rd level sorcerer the cleric support is boosted with the distant and twincasting metamagic and flexible casting let’s the cleric use higher level spell slots to recover lower level spell slots for healing spells
divine soul origin of sorcerers already have access to cleric spells without multi classing
Thats not in the players handbook...
@@anthonycannet1305 that is what the expansions are for
So no need to multiclass
Plus divine soul allows cleric spell use without needing to multiclass
@@anthonycannet1305 this is to prepare for some games that dont allow multiclass
if this is the end of the class guide videos, then what happens in the adventure story you used as the background? did they all beat the lich? was peace restored to the kingdom? i must know these things.
There's still one class to go: the Paladin. The Sorcerer was the last full caster class.
There is 1 more class to cover. But everything might be wrapped up in an extra video.
Don't Stop Thinking will you do the UA?
Wild mage for life!
You should do something like this for the races too, give us an overview on each.
and monsters
Thanks for getting this to us.
according to dndbeyond it's a bonus action to convert spells into sorcery points, not an action.
My Second class playing 5e , good times
The Irony is that the Sorcerer Supreme Dr. Strange is actually a Wizard...
While "Yer'a Wizard 'arry" Potter is actually a Sorcerer.
I have a gambling addiction and therefore I must play wild magic.
Sad to hear this is the last Class guide they have been great :D.
This is the last full spellcaster, but not the last class guide. There is one more class for me to cover.
Great to Hear :D
1 left! Your almost done!
Or... Multiclass with barbarian for extra health, select defensive and close range spells and build a tank
Hey can you do blood hunter and artificer the books really don't help at all
I'm really looking forward to the Paladin episode. I know that, because of how many times I checked if it's up :D lol
Divine Soul is my favorite sorcerer bloodline
flaming sphere for 1 day now that's something terrifying
I always found raw magic more fun than draconian blood, it just wasn't as fun without that wild surge table cause of my awful luck
I have never played a sorcerer but i assume that Tiefling sorcerers would be devastating if you make them dragonic bloodline.
Sorcerers are _not_ bad, infact I could argue there one of the most powerful classes but they require a plan on what you want to do with them - this is why newer player can strugle with sorcerers, if you want to play a socerer have a plan! Will you be going over Xanathar's Guide to Everything?
I can do quick review of them in the future.
Thanks!
That would be awesome
I think even just you giving your stat rating on the new subclasses would already be a huge help to players.
It'd be cool to see an Aasimar Sorcerer with Divine Soul...
Man, thanks. You are amazing
Here we go for my Fallen Aasimar Sorcerer!
I had so much hope for focus on Wild Magic Sorcerer :(
At 9.06 or so, you cover the Quickened Spell meta magic, saying that Fireball is a Cantrip.
Other than that though, great video :D
I meant to say firebolt, but I may have said fireball.
i have a dragonborn sorcerer as well
You are flying! Now I am gonna flip you off!
Disclaimer: I’ve played literally one session of D&D ever, though I’ve watched hundreds of hours of campaigns. I’ve drummed up the idea for a trickster sorcerer with wild magic, always trying to steal things but then having the dice say otherwise. I was hoping to go for a utility caster, but after watching this video I’m more skeptical. Is this character going to be viable as a more spell focused arcane trickster, or should I go with an arcane trickster?
It is viable with subtle spell, but you need to be creative with the use of your spell.
its a bonus action to turn sorcery points into spell slots
You're right. I completely missed that one.
no problem everyone makes mistakes. i just thought it would be the right thing to correct it so beginners don't. though I'm surprised you don't think sorcerers don't multi class into wizards that well they both use arcane focus and bot have have good synergy with each other bot thematically and mechanically.
damnit dude i wanted you to discuss the wild sorcerer
I'm playing a wild mage skirmisher warforged with bad a negative dex and a +3 to strength. It's a lot of fun.
Hey man, I got a question. Since the class guide series is coming to an end, what are your plans for the future?
Im planning on making a short how to dungeon master for complete beginners series. Lots of people coming to the channel seem to not be able to find a table where they can play, so I guess the only solution is to teach them to play.
But producing it will take a while, I will be making other videos in the mean time. I'm having a blast playing Monster Hunter World, so I guess I will do some videos on that too.
Don't Stop Thinking That would be amazing! I'm starting out as a new DM for this New Year and I'd love to see videos on dming with your style and animation.
@@DontStopThinking you are by far the number 1 person I go to for all my dm questions. Thank you so much!!
Where is the 2x dice damage at level 5 coming from? I cant find it in the player handbook.
Look for the specific damaging cantrip you want to look up
Like firebolt or chill touch
Question cj using the following scenario
Assuming the sorcerer is hidden somewhere and they aim to use a spell modded with subtle spell on some enemy guards
Shouldnt it mean the sorcerer gets advantage when it is a ranged spell attack roll or disadvantage on the targets if it forces them to make a saving throw?
Should said unaware guards even roll for a save at all when they dont have any clue what is being done to them?
Last class would be paladins!!! Hype for it
mystic too
