This video walks you through removing the fuel tank on a 2000 Chevy Blazer, GMC Jimmy and other GM vehicles. This is the first step in the fuel pump replacement procedure. I'll be posting a video on how to install the fuel pump, as well as how to install the gas tank, when the order comes in. Removing the fuel tank on a Chevy Blazer \ GMC Jimmy is not that bad of a job. I've also posted a close up shot of how to release the quick connectors on the fuel line. The instructions in this video will be the same of similar on several other vehicles. I would not recommend purchasing a cheap fuel pump, stick with AC Delco, Delphi or possibly Bosh. I purchased a Delphi fuel pump on Amazon for $169.99 (free shipping). You can replace your own fuel tank sending unit!

Note to other DIY mechanics, GM made two different gas tanks for these types of vehicles around this age. One plastic tank and one metal tank. There are separate pumps for each tank and one will not fit into the other. Made that mistake and ordered the plastic pump (not specified) instead of the pump for the metal tank (also not specified) and thought I would pass this info along. Note: my vehicle is a 98 Chevy Blazer LS

I just successfully completed my fuel pump today on a 2004 Blazer. Great videos on how to go about doing it. Appreciate the help and the money I saved by not having a mechanic do it. I know I saved at least $800 doing it myself. Bangerang!!!

Car would not go more than 30 mph today. Pulled over, died. Hit with starter fluid, ran for a moment, so i know its not getting fuel. Pulled filter, put a straw on it and blew. No resistance, same as the new one. Likely the pump. Bought the service manual a while back, looks easy enough to drop the tank but I find so much value in watching a vid first. Thanks for posting. Gonna do some more chris fix diagnostics tomorrow to confirm the fault. Will repoert back when Im done.

SO THANKS!

Yea.....a lot of parts for this car you can't get anymore...can't get a replacement fuel tank either so best be careful not to puncture your tank....

I would add one thing to this, though. I pulled the four bolts out of the back u-joint, tied the drive shaft up high, and it gave me a LOT of room. Still! Thanks for putting this up! That forward bolt was a (poopy word!)! But I used an impact and the back and forth with the vise grips like you did. Worked like a charm, and no rung bolts!!!

Thank you for this video series. I had the fuel pump crap out on my 1999 GMC Jimmy and this video proved invaluable. Now, know on wood, let's just hope she keeps running. The worst part for me was getting the fill hose and vent hose off because I didn't want to damage the tank or hoses. It took almost 6 hours to get the tank out, it was frustrating. Cleaning and getting back in took about 3 hours.

***** $350 for the Delphi pump at O'Reilly's. Got the same pump, lock ring and fuel line clips for $180 shipped off Amazon. After all that, I couldn't get the fuel filter off to replace it. I gave it a good soak of Liquid Wrench, we'll see if she budges later this week.

Hi. If you use a radiator hose removal tool on the filler hose it comes off easy. Also if you run a die nut as far up the tank strap bolts as possible the nuts come off easy too. A pair of right angle long nose pliers will help a lot while removing fuel lines, should come off in 1 piece. Thanks for the info Mark, I'm about to crawl under the patient with a hand full of toys & fix it. Would be nice if they had an inspection hole above the pump wouldn't it.

Good video!! However, removing the bolts for the bed, and jacking it up on the front end is a much easier process to gain access to the fuel pump assembly. I guess it all comes down to personal preference. Good job though!! Two thumbs up!!

Great video! I loved how well you got your camcorder into them tight spots to get the view we needed to get the job done right. I may have to do this to my 95 Jimmy (w4.3L Vortec), if in fact that turns out to be the cause of it not wanting to start. It will start if I use starting fluid though. I hear the pump priming for 2 seconds when the key is turned on, plus I hear the pump's relay in the glove box clicking on as well so I'm kinda ruling out the fuel pump now. Your thoughts on this please?

    • @StrayCat414
      @StrayCat414 9 ปีที่แล้ว

+Mark Jenkins Thanks for your reply. I'll try the shovel smack trick. I replaced the fuel filter a few months ago thinking it was the cause of the (assumed) restricted gas flowing into the motor but it wasn't. I gave this a full tune-up last December too. It wants to fire but doesn't catch enough to actually start it though. Do fuel pumps lose their oomph before they die and don't put out enough fuel pressure? Thanks again.

  • @RodknockRhett

You can siphon the gas out by just disconnecting the quick connect on the fuel filter and attaching a hose. Then jump the fuel pump relay (Pins 30 to 87). This will force the pump to run. It made my pump run even though it wouldn't with the key on. My pumps motor seamed to seize and that somehow freed it up. (Do NOT jump 85 or 86!)

I have a parts question. I need a replacement tank for a 2002 chevy blazer 4dr ls. Every tank I come across online for that make model shows it is for 2dr. However, it is suppose to be compatible?? I would think so. I previously order a tank for s10 blazer, (apparently my vehicle has s10 components as well but according to vin it is "blazer" , even have s10 decals on the truck) and that tank I ordered was not the right one. The original is a plastic tank, all the ones I come across or metal.

Hey any chance you have had to replace the fuel line & filter after replacing the Fuel pump.. I'm about to and it was a Rusty hole in the fuel line I think cuz it all started spreading out from the side of the door I checked all my hoses and clamps they were pretty solid so now I get to go back home today after work and drop this gas tank again just to get to the fuel line

Only place I screwed up is I didn't buy fuel line clips they don't come with the kit that's the clips he squeezes with his hands and breaks one off I just broke all three since I only had a floor jack and if you don't want to lay on your back the whole time then listen to mark and take that spare out I also took backside driver tire off while doing the wiring part which you will have to do unless you spend $500 for a Oem instead of $250 for an aftermarket lifetime warranty the clip is different with the new pump

Your lucky to have a plastic tank, my 96 blazer had a metal tank that rusted all the way down the side and broke open when i did this same job.

I just cut a hole in the floor and removed the pump from inside the vehicle. Put a sheet metal patch over the hole, go to go!
