@@bambi3595 i did watch it. Any kind of open flame or too high of a temperature can set wood in fire. That's why skewers are being soaked, so they don't catch on fire. If that happens, it could be extremely dangerous.

But he said it's for Yakitori. Yakitori is different than let's say, Indonesia Satay beacuse Yakitori's skewer are a lot smaller but way thicker than Satay skewer (most of the time). Traditional Yakitori skewer also has that small square at the end fot holding and gripping.
Satay on the other hand (at least from some places i eat) had a way thinner longer skewer, because unlike Yakitori which are meant to be eaten in smaller bites (which mean less cooking time overall, and lesser chance to burn the skewers), Satay tends to have more meats on a single skewer, which means it'll stay longer on the grill and higher chances of burning the skewer.
I think at least for this video, the yakitori looks meatier than satay that usually sold by street vendor. Altho i never tried yakitori before but from the look of it, the taste will be bland since they are not marinated beforehand.

Honestly the first time I heard of soaking skewers was on TH-cam XD We never soak them but they never burn so I think experience says it's redundant

My family normally soaks the skewers. I did it once and forgot to soak it and it burnt

He was making chicken skewers in the oven and we all smelled something burning, and we found out it was coming from his oven. He said he didn’t soak them because he didn’t think they’d burn.

As far as I was aware, I thought the skewers were soaked, to prevent the skewers from splintering and getting bamboo fibers stuck in the meat... I'll just stick to metal ones

Im just gonna say soak en cause its not about the handle but rather that small piece thats hitting the flame between the meat and the handle it will burn occasionally and when you pick it up the stick just breaks and your yakitori will fall to the ground

Yakitori sticks are thicker than normal bbq sticks. Even the grill is different. So I understand why they don’t bother soaking the sticks. But yow, you’ve lived here in the Philippines before. Bbq sticks here are so cheap. You can buy it for like $1 for 100pcs and you know they are not the thickest.

I’ve never heard of Yakitori before, so forgive my ignorance..but does it get seasoned or anything after it’s cooked, or a sauce? The sear on that chicken looks perfect.

When you soak them they get easily soft when you use it. It also causes possible contamination for the meat

Meh. His reasons sound whack. When you use a yakitori grill, even if the handles are technically off the flames, the parts that touch the grill still burns and sometimes breaks off. I didn’t hear any actual reasons as why you shouldn’t soak the skewers.

Chicken bacteria will not spread from a moist skewer because the grill is too hot for bacteria to survive anyway.
