    idk if anyone mentioned this, but Naomie Harris (the mom) shot all of her scenes over the span of three days. She was able to show the massive time jumps in her performance and carry a whole character arc in three days of shooting. This is why she's one of the most underrated actresses working right now imo

    the way i interpreted that last shot was that his inner child was being healed. being touched in such a loving, innocent way by someone that he loved made him feel like a child again, especially since he had been deprived of so much of the love that he deserved. i also thought maybe that last shot was supposed to be him as a kid looking at his future self and realizing that he can be happy, or maybe it was his younger self being proud of him. i mean, don’t we all want to be the kind of person that our 10 year old selves would look up to? definitely up to interpretation but that’s how i felt about it :)

      It's also to allude to the source material that was titled "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue." But you're right, it was that original scene on the beach where someone showed him unconditional love. So it's basically a full circle moment.

    • @krautgazer
      @krautgazer ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're absolutely right. I also want to point out the symbolism that the movie makes around water and fire. "You like the water, I'll introduce you to some fire" - Kevin says that when he shows him love for the first time. water is a form of escapism for Chiron - be it in the beach, the bathtub, or the cold water in the sink. He uses water to numb himself emotionally. That's also the same thing Kevin says about the sea being a place that people go drown their sorrows. The film is divided in three parts and each part has a beach scene. In the first part, we see Little being introduced to that form of escapism by Juan (who also provides another form of escapism to Little's mom). Juan himself is like the water and Little is constantly coming back to his house to escape. In the second part, we see Chiron going back to the beach to escape everything. In the third part, we see Black just looking briefly at the beach but this time he doesn't go there, he chooses fire/Kevin/human warmth/love/his true self. I think the fact that Little is looking back instead of looking at the sea in the final shot may also be significant because of this water symbolism. He's not choosing to numb himself anymore.

    • @krautgazer
      @krautgazer ปีที่แล้ว

      Another thing to point out about fire being a symbol of love is that Chiron already knew "fire" when he smoked that blunt. He says his mom leaves a lot of stuff around. He knew motherly love but the love his mother offered was only partial and indirect, only leftovers. Kevin was the only person to actually offer him true love. The only person who has ever touched him (physically and emotionally).

    NGL, I was salty when the whole Oscar snafu happened and this one won over La La Land (I had not yet seen Moonlight). However, after finally watching the movie, I recognize it’s importance. Until recently, most LGBTQI+ mainstream movies were very stylized and very campy. This film stripped all of that away and offered a brutal, yet realistic, depiction of the toxic masculinity most encounter when growing up queer in low income/non-white communities, and I’m glad that those involved with the film were recognized for bringing that to the forefront (which is why it connected with so many people).

Moonlight deserved it way better.

    The last shot is regarding the monologue Juan gives in the scene where he teaches Chiron to swim. In Cuba in his earlier days, some Cuban lady told Juan that in the moonlight (title of film), black boys look blue. The colour grading of the shot reflects that. Young Chiron smiling is probably because he opened up to Kevin and shared healthy love finally.

    This movie was shot in only 20ish days and the director didn’t let any of the 3 actors portraying Chiron interact or meet because he didn’t want them copying or imitating eachother so the fact that all 3 read this script and got this character so perfectly is ridiculously impressive.
    Also, the title Moonlight is from the quote “black boys look blue in the moonlight”. They light Chiron wt many different colors including a lot of blue - that last shot especially.

  • @afonsords
    @afonsords 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You said, at the end, you couldn't interpret it and yet you beautifully did! In my opinion, the final shot with him looking back at us while facing the moonlight is him inviting us to look at ourselves (in the moonlight), as he is doing. That is, to see our true self (i.e., who we are in the moonlight/ in the "dark"), as opposed who we are during the day (the front we put on for society). Art differs from entertainment in that it exposes something deep inside us. In that way, it *is* almost like a therapy session. So, no surprise you had that reaction in the end (and I say this as a psychologist)! This is especially relevant for men since masculinity explicitly encourages men to repress, not express.

    The first man to touch him with any love and compassion was Juan when he took him to the beach and taught him how to swim. He was the light when he was in a dark place. No man ever touched him again to show him love and compassion until Kevin at the end. The final scene, he is seeing himself back in that safe place like when he first felt it on the beach. He found his light in the darkness. He could let his walls down and just be himself. The concept of "manhood" historically seems to center around toughness and strength when in reality, he became a man when he was able to be open and vulnerable.

    SEB: I am glad to see you watching a drama instead of 'entertainment', despite the fact that, as you noted, dramas do not necessarily set out to make us feel good, and I think that's important. Films like "Moonlight" and so many others remind us of what life is, what people can do good and bad, and how choices are often grey, not black and white in more cartoony movies.And you have an eye, you recognize the difference in look and feel, even shot language, and how sometimes dialogue isn't necessary. I hope you continue to branch out in your movies - how about 'The Favourite', or "Killing of a Sacred Deer' - both by Yorgos Lanthimos, for instance. Anyway, bravo for expanding your cinematic universe and with this great film.

    Love your reaction. I remember seeing this at the cinema and it stayed with me for ages. There is so much to unpack in this movie. But that scene at the end when Kevin says “I have an idea” and Black let’s his guard down is amazing. His whole energy changed in a second and it was done so well! That broke me.
    I don’t know how everyone else feels, but with these types of movies (having such an emotional, realistic storyline) I find i can only watch them once. I let all the emotions wash over me and then I have to let them all go.

    You're a special one, y'know, and you're always such a joy to watch / watch with, through all the emotions. This was really heartfelt.
    This may be a bit random but your thoughts on characters and your comments on the end, particularly about masculinity and such, made me think you'd really like the TH-cam channel Cinema Therapy, if you haven't seen it already. I fell in love with them over start of quarantine, and I can already think of like 15 videos of theirs I think you should watch haha - anyway, would definitely recommend :)

    Little Black Chiron is proud and free and now BIG ADULT CHIRON gets to be free and himself and perhaps with Kevin who finally admits that I missed you like the singer missed the person in the song. The actors never saw each others performance. Today on December 26, 2022, I watched this film for the 32nd times and I am still broken to tears. Toxic Masculinity and Struggle and Trauma and the tenderness of finding someone who sees you and then you think you’ve lost them and the power of him thinking about him and coming to find him. I AM NAMED KEVIN AND I AM A BLACK GAY MAN. I am Chiron though, little and tender in a world that told me I couldn’t be me and I had to find my voice.
    AND YOU GOT IT: we all have our fronts!!! That perspective is absolutely spot on and insightful!!! Please cry

    I saw this movie on a date in the theatre and the advertisements for the film weren't explicitly state that this was a movie with a gay main character. The movie is so beautiful, but the audience reaction just really affirmed the issues that society has with gay people. People laughed when the kid asked if he was a fggt, people were grossed out when the kiss/sex happened on the beach, and then groaned when his friend was supporting him after all those years.

    I love these types of films. The more you think about them, it can affect you a bit more. This is one of my favorite movies of the past 10 yrs. I have held so much in for so long and it has really affected me. But now I realize that its ok the let it out. It's quite cathardic. Great reaction. I was that one on the top right hand side of the cinema crying loudly until the credits stopped rolling.

    Hey, glad you watched this movie. It still to this day makes me cry & reflect on how my own unique but similarly-horrible situation turned out & how it could have gotten worse. Glad I chose to embrace my softer side. BTW, the title 'Moonlight' is from what Juan's grandma said to him that he told Chiron when he was younger. Oh and in conjunction, the two older actors got the mannerisms from the younger actor & the director got the other two to follow his lead to give the consistency. 🖤💜🖤

      I thought this was the cause because of the most famous example of this: Forrest Gump. Tom Hanks famously copied the mannerisms and accent of the actor who played young forrest.

    This movie hits a little too close to home as a closeted person. Whenever I watch this film I get the feeling of pure isolation. Just feeling so alone in the world, with no one to reach out to to help you. Being so self aware of your every movement. Not just of how you physically act, but the things you’re into, the friends/relationships you have. It’s such a tiring existence to have to hide who you are for so long. Even though it’s gotten a lot better for LGBTQ+ people, we still have such a long way to go. There are so many “littles” out there. Desperate to live their life free of shame, fear, and self hatred. Sooner then later, I hope we can get to that place where they feel comfortable living their truth. Everyone deserves too.

    I love this film so much, and everyone does such an amazing job. Thanks for sharing. One thing I think is interesting is his name. Chiron is a character from Greek mythology, a wise and kind centaur when most around him were savage. He was also notably kind to children. And yeah, I can't watch this without tears. It really is remarkably beautiful, and woof... Trevante Rhodes. Dude. I'm dead. Send flowers.

    i felt seen and understood the first time i watched this film. i was raised in a conservative, catholic, mexican-american household; and i knew from a very young age that i wasnt straight. i also knew that not being straight was considered a bad thing that i would have to hide for some time. i knew because kids threw the word homo at me like an insult before i was old enough to know what it meant. i knew because the church told me gay people go to hell. i knew because my father said that if a man isnt a macho leader for his wife and children, then he is a failure. so much happens within this movie where so few words are said. so much of it was things id been through, things i had wanted to say, things i wished could happen. this film very honestly depicts what many people globally face when they have to grow up gay in communities that dont support them.

    Hey. My screen name isn't my real name (because I'm a secondary school teacher in the UK and we can't be having the kids knowing what we teachers comment in public haha), but - just to say - I've always loved your reactions and your reaction to this was so powerful and moving (particularly in your outro). I've cried every time I've ever watched this film all the way through - it's a film that says so much about growing up and trying to fit in and finding your place in the world - and I show it to my Y11s every Christmas (when we have two of those 'waster' lessons) in order to build empathy in my students so that those kids like Chiron and me don't get treated like Chiron did in this film. I love your channel, Seb. Keep it up.

    Awwww! Your reaction in the outro was so beautiful and I think I got it all without you saying any words, just as the characters in the movie.
    As for some of the symbolism, much of it relies on the story the drug dealer tells the kid when they go to the beach, something about a Black boy bathed in blue moonlight or something of the sort. A beautiful image.
    And yeah, its all about how enclosed and trapped you feel when you negate yourself. The main character has been ignorant about himself, then scared and also fearful of his surroundings, especially living in a bad neighborhood with bullies. And then, in the last few minutes, we realize he gets a glimpse at being free from all of that. That's why they don't kiss or have sex, they just hold each other as they enter a new phase in their lives. It's a beautiful movie and I yelled when it won Best Picture over La La Land.
    And what does it mean to be a man? Nothing. We created the meaning so we can create another or just not care about labels and live our best lives. Thank you for opening a door to these kinds of conversations.
    Recomendation: watch God's Own Country. UK movie, released the same year than Call me by your name but sooooo much better in every way. Jack O'Connor (The Crown) gives a magnificent performance.

    Beautiful reaction. Thank you for opening up and sharing with us. I've gotten used to most reaction channels picking movies/shows that are more "popcorn entertainment," so it is nice that you react to both. Sub from me! This film resonated with me. It is a beautiful example of artistry.
    If I may make an off the wall recommendation, I would suggest the mini-series Angels in America. It's been almost 20 years since I first watched it and it is still my favorite "movie." (I view it as a 6-hour movie! haha) I was young when I saw it and it tackled so many issues that I was struggling with. It is beautifully made and the performances are out of this world: Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Emma Thompson, Patrick Wilson, Jeffrey Wright, Mary Louise Parker and more! I tear up just thinking about certain scenes and there are scenes that still make me burst into laughter. I highly recommend!

    It's not really a typical reaction movie since it's so understated without the big in your face moments that make reactions. But I'm glad you decided to do this one. Your thoughts and reactions were wonderful to see. It's such a sweet movie even with the darkness it carries in a lot of the scenes. Honestly if there's any movie to get emotional about or to cry over, it might be this one. Especially on the topic of thinking about what it means to be a man and your relationship with your masculinity since Chiron struggled with that the whole movie. It's a pretty emotional film. I love that they took someone in society who is typically the "bad guy" (a drug dealer) and showed him taking a child under his wing and showing positive masculinity that was genuine and not as a means to abuse the kid's trust. It's also sweet that that home was still a haven for Chiron even after Juan died because he still felt safe, wanted and loved by Teresa. It's a nice take on found family.

    I love how you think they are so similar since (my fave trivia for this movie from IMDb):
    "In an interview, Barry Jenkins said that the three actors who play Chiron never met during production. He wanted each of them to build their own persona of Chiron during their respective segments, with no influence from the other portrayals. The same technique was used with the actors who play Kevin."
    Also, the title Moonlight comes from "The film is based on the unproduced play "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue" by MacArthur Fellow Tarell Alvin McCraney."

    I fell in love with this movie the first time that I saw it. I was so sad throughout the entire movie and then to finally see Chiron appear to be "free" caused to be go into a full ugly sob. I feel like everyone in this life should get to be "them" and knowing that some people have to suppress the true them, for whatever reason, breaks my heart.
