  • Lt. Columbo (Peter Falk) Roasts Frank Sinatra (1978)
    Dean Martin managed to get all sorts of great names to sit down and be roasted but when he finally got Frank Sinatra, all bets were off. Sinatra's tough reputation was well-known so would people really show up and throw jokes at him? Of course they would and what an incredible line-up that came to roast the legendary singer/actor. Special appearance by Peter Falk as Lt. Columbo.
    Produced and directed by Greg Garrison. ©1978 NBC. Vimeo link: vimeo.com/463805096

    The funniest thing about this is how it isn't really funny. The absolute precision with which Falk just rambles on about nothing in particular is utterly hilarious. A man mentioning that you can't lose a comb because it glows in the dark shouldn't be amusing, but when Lt. Columbo drops that tidbit at a celebrity roast, it's absolutely hysterical.

      The artful display of a very American meme first popularized by Ohenry: Exaultung the commonplace. Falk does it very well. These are things I am sure all these stars have dealt with among fans, and I am sure fans have all experienced in one form or another when meeting celebrities. It could be seen as drole, if it were not so overshadowed by wholesomeness.

      Well, he may not be telling jokes, but it is intrinsically funny because we're already in on the joke concerning Columbo's manner. His appearance at such a gathering is already charged with humour as it's so incongruous. Just asking if Dino's shoes are rented is hilarious given what we know about Columbo!

    • @imbrogirlioz8652
      @imbrogirlioz8652 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      In case you’ve never found it “night letter” refers to a cheaper way to send more words by telegram. telegrams were priced per word & sometimes by timing for delivery. So if you wanted to send a telegram with a lot of words, but didn’t have a lot of money, you could send as a “night letter” with more words for less money, but wouldn’t deliver until the next morning, instead of same day.
      The implication as Columbo is using it is that they weren’t being cheap - they paid to send a lot of words at the regular rate.

      @@ojtheviking I am aware this was said about 6 months ago, but I've just done a bit of research myself into this Mrs Columbo series and want to share - you may find this interesting - Mrs Columbo was married to another detective called columbo, not our beloved Frank Columbo. I would like to imagine that the two of them were married their whole lives without a divorce haha. The Mrs Columbo show was later renamed four times, with the last name being "Kate loves a mystery". The NBC originally named it Mrs Columbo in hopes to carry on the Columbo mystique without Columbo himself. The policeman Columbo was not Peter Falk's character, just some random policeman coincidentally also called Columbo.

    I find it amazing that on that stage is over 50 years of Hollywood culture shared by most everyone which is one of the main reasons this "bit" works so well. Columbo paying tribute to Frank Sinatra is beyond "beeaking the 4th wall". So far, that one forgets Peter Falk is even needed.
