  • Here's my little story on a little fire that started because of a little part I forgot to add. Don't make the same mistake!

    Very good video man! I really appreciate this video because I am going to add the same type of usb and usb c and 12v socket to my ranger in the bed and also on my brother's 1500 ram. At first when watching this I knew you had just forgot to add a fuse but I didn't know exactly where so your detailed explanation and drawing it out on paper as you did was extremely helpful for me to understand exactly what I need to do right away. Glad you didn't have a fire burn up your jeep but kudos to you for quick reaction to running for the fire extinguisher.

      I’m actually gonna build something where I can mount the fire extinguisher within arms distance next time. It takes up too much time to run to the back to grab it

    One thing I love about my JL is it came with the aux switches so wiring up other electronics to it couldn't be easier.

      Yup. Friend of mine has it too. Jeep finally learned that they might as well make it factory with all the stuff we wanna put on it

    Good lessons learned! Any power cable should be positively zip tied down so it doesn't move and away from any moving parts fo there is no possibility of wear and causing shorts.
    Also, there is no need to run the negative lead from your power outlet all the way to the battery as the entire vehicle is grounded and there are plenty of grounding lugs in the back of the Jeep that you can connect the negative lead to.
    Lastly, I have a USB charger plugged into a 12V socket on one of my cars and this socket is powered 100% of the time and is not switched - it came from the factory that way! The plugged in Motorola charger also has a small LED indicator on the front showing power once plugged in and I've left this in the car plugged in 100% of the time for months at a time and it doesn't drain the battery. The LED current draw for such a small LED is probably a single digit milliamp level so you shouldn't need to worry about draining your battery. One way you can test this on your Jeep is to turn the switch on and measure your battery voltage. Leave the switch on for a day, a week, two weeks or however long you have it not driven and measure the battery voltage with a multimeter. I think you will not find any significant battery voltage drops!

    Quick question
    I just have a quick question is it possible to install the second 12 V socket and tap into my factory 12 V socket in the rear of my 2018 jeep Wrangler JKU or do I need to run to the battery? Any help would be great

    • @BaptismOverland
      @BaptismOverland  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've tapped into it before. Good news is that socket you're tapping into is fused so it should break that if the load is too much. I DO have to say I'm not a licensed electrician so run it at your own risk. Personally I've just gone to the battery with mine because I want a constant power without ignition needing to be on.

    • @dr.christophergroves2116

      @@BaptismOverland I’m concerned if I tap into the battery running all the time will drain my battery. If I tapped it into the factory socket, I could switch it off right? I understand not being a licensed electrician. But I value your thought.

    • @BaptismOverland
      @BaptismOverland  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@dr.christophergroves2116 correct. It'll drain your battery if you tap into it IF you have something plugged into it all the time or if the 12v socket you have has a little LED light. It won't be a lot of drain but yeah def don't want that

    I would have inserted the fuses in a more accessible location along the cable, in your location, if a fuse blows, you have to dismantle all the panels.

    • @BaptismOverland

    Yes, positive wire always gets a fuse as close to the battery as possible or a fuse panel or something similar. This is probably the number 1 mistake people make when adding accessories to their vehicles. The think it's a small wire, not a lot of power, so they don't need a fuse or there's a fuse on the accessories.

    • @BaptismOverland
      @BaptismOverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. Either way that whole thing has been dismantled and I rebuilt a whole new system for the back now with a power dist hub

  • @overlandtoshore
    @overlandtoshore 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    On the opposite side you put your switch, there is wiring already there for a socket. Even if there is not a socket. My 2016 sport had the wiring with 12-14 volts coming out of the hot wire on a plug. I looked at the forums and they said it was for a socket. You really didnt have to run a wire directly to the battery. 29 bucks on amazon and then 15 more on a whole panel of sockets is well worth it.

    • @BaptismOverland
      @BaptismOverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow didn't know that! Good to know but I already upgraded the whole system anyway. There's a video now where I created a whole new distribution block to power 12V plus fridge and lift gate light

      @@cheburashkadude2189 also I accidentally removed your other comment. My apologies! If you’re running the wire all the way fr the battery to the back I would go with no smaller than a 10ga. 10 should do. 8 would be overkill and 12 is too small.
