    Haha, I first watched this video with the sound off just to get a quick idea of what you did. I thought, “looks pretty simple”. Then I watched and listened and 10:37 had me feeling like I came back down to earth. Haha

      The regular Corolla is easier to work on- this XRS has less room just about everywhere due to the larger intake manifold and extra cams, and anything else that is different.

    When installing a thermostat the bleeder hole on it should face 12 o'clock straight up, this helps bleed air out. Also, toyotas use red oem coolant and a Lisle spill free funnel kit (can get on amazon) makes filling coolant and bleeding out air a lot less messy. Also it's a good idea to clean the gasket surfaces before bolting it back on. I got from another video that the torque spec on those nuts is 8 ft lbs (sounds right). Good video. Sorry for all this criticism.

    Years ago i had my Clutch changed and went ahead and got the coolant changed. After it took a lot longer for my car's heater to start working. Wonder if they did not get all the air out when they changed the coolant. Car never overheated but a few years later occasionally my check engine light turns on. Thx for your video upload!!!

    TOYOTAS COOLANT SHOULD BE PINK. GREEN COOLANT WILL DAMAGE THE COOLANT SYSTEM.

    Thanks for this video. Soon i am doing that and some more to a 2004 corolla and since i am replacing water pump, thermostat, belt i will be taking the alternator out. That is the easy part because I have a blown head gasket due to cooling failure due to us being dumb and ignorant; cost us an engine already once and now this one almost; i am fixing this car from hell right and selling it, but not before almost becoming a mechanic myself because the guy we have been taking the car to really sucks; he could have told us all this and avoid us the expensive repairs but that is how we learn when the pocket is affected. The way that car is right now it is not worth even $500.00; the dealer wanted to give us $300.00for it, thanks to how fucked up they are, i decided to fix it buying all i need for it and then sell it running right, no BS. So far just in parts I am close to $1000, so hopefully once it is done and back from hell, i can sell it for 3-4K; car has good exterior, new brakes nice tires and rims and transmission is working good too for 122000 miles on it; first engine was busted at 80000 miles, this one went in with 62000 miles certified pre own, so from 80000 miles to 122000 that is 42000 miles that second engine has run before doing same things again all because the cooling system have been neglected always; that means the engine that is in now has actually 102000 miles on it which the real mileage the car should be go for, way too young to "retire it" just yet!

      Yeah ours has 260,000 miles on it now. The engine in yours is similar, but not the same as our XRS. But most of the jobs like radiator, thermostat, water pump, alternator, etc are the same process, but the parts may be slightly different. I have videos for all those repairs and more under my Corolla playlist on my channel. Good luck with it, and thanks for watching.

    Can you also replace the starter that sits underneath the intake manifold from the top with fan removed or the starter needs to be removed from the bottom? I have an 05 Corolla XRS.

      I have a video one the starter- check out the Corolla playlist on the channel for that video and more.

    What's up bud big fan of your vids! been looking this up because of a head gasket that is leaking I've been thinking about using blue devil K seal I've heard instructions include removing thermostat putting back together running liquid waiting then putting back engine together. Scared of doing this though don't have much money either

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually never heard of this stuff till you enlightened me. So after some brief research, seems the Blue Devil stuff is the best brand. Seems to have pretty good reviews, other than the few people whining that it didn't work. Only concerning complaint I read was ONE guy said it clogged up his heater core. But the core was probably already pretty clogged up I would guess. I don't think you have to do all that? Looks like you can just leave it in there for a little bit, then just drain it and put fresh coolant in. Just follow the instructions, whatever it says. I would recommend watching my radiator video if this one doesn't show how to burp the system properly if you drain it, can't remember if it does or not. Gotta be careful not to overheat when draining/changing the coolant.

    Thinking of getting a matrix xrs 2004 I'm assuming it's the same engine as the Corolla? My question is, does this car have a tendency to burn oil due to neglected maintenance. Since I'm buying it used @ 134,xxx miles

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it's the same engine but lift will hit sooner on an 04 Matrix XRS. As far as burning oil from neglect, I have no idea. The non xrs cars with the 1zz engine notoriously burn oil because the engine in those have faulty piston rings from the factory. The xrs cars have no such issues with the 2zz engine. But any vehicle has the potential to burn oil if neglected to the point where the cylinder walls and rings are damaged, or valve seals. Overall I think it's a pretty bulletproof engine (2zz). Ours has 260,000 hard miles now (redline every time driven and frequent racing) and still runs great, doesn't burn oil. But we change the oil every 5000mi with full synthetic and keep up on whatever else it needs too. I have a tun of repair videos on ours if you get it and ever need to work on it. Didn't really start having to replace stuff on ours until around 200k...

    • @Jame6999
      @Jame6999 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do I quickly tell it's a 2zz engine? Do they stamp the code any where for quick ID

    Is this car is the us or? i wonder where you get your aluminum Intakemanifor?

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes US model. Only the XRS model here with the 2zzge engine has the aluminum intake manifold. All other models with the 1zz engines are plastic manifolds.

    I'm having this same issue, change my heater core and thermostat.. and no heat from heater.. I did this for 39 min and still over heating..

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I assume you're talking about burping the coolant system? Raise the front of the car as high as possible so the air will come out.

  • @marcsmith3881

    I hate working in tight spaces like that so I move things out of the way. I would have removed the alternator. My luck I would pull on the thermostat and smash into the radiator.

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The alternator is a pain to remove too, same issues; no space. And getting the belt back on this car is a nightmare.

  • @seanlacroix
    @seanlacroix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you jack the front end of the car up it will bleed the system way faster.

    Isn't that the wrong color for the fluid?

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the Toyota brand recommended fluid is Orange, but this car has 260,000 miles on it now and it has had the green fluid in it since I can remember, so I'd say it's safe to say it will be fine.

    Roast me if you must; but can some one explain to me why you cant just take out the alternator to get to the thermostat?

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can, but removing the alternator is even more of a pain in the ass, and you may possibly round off the nut on the tensioner arm and then not be able to get the belt back on; nightmare of a job. I have the alternator video under the corolla xrs playlist on my channel if you care to see. I never want to mess with that thing again. Best part was, the new alternator failed less than a year later and I had to do it again, but at least then I had a new tensioner arm installed that wasn't so tight that the nut rounded off like the old one did. It would definately be easier to access the thermostat with the alternator out, I just don't know if you want to tackle the alternator. Any other car, no problem. On this thing, because of the stupid tensioner arm design, absolute nightmare. I suggest you check out my alternator video and see for yourself. Viewer discretion advised, more profanity lol. Thanks for watching, and good luck, whichever path you choose.

      I did, and it was very easy. Took about as long as watching the video. Take out the alternator, it will save you a lot of hassle. Also, no need to remove the radiator.

      @@BuckeyeBallistics no.

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The XRS has a different tensioner arm/piston than the other models. I'm assuming it's stiffer on the XRS due to the higher revving 2ZZGE engine in the XRS needing more tension against the belt. I could be wrong about it being stiffer, but it's definately a different part, and I would assume that's why. On top of that, I'm pretty sure the piston on mine was seezing up, leading to the edges of the tension nut head on mine beggining to round off when trying to relieve tension to remove the belt, which is why I replaced it. I'm glad to hear it went smoothly for you, for me it was a nightmare.
