Definitely agree about FF6, but calling FF7 graphics "roblox" ignores 90% of the graphics, which are nice hand-drawn backdrops. Combined with the music sometimes this gave a fantastic atmosphere.
For the year of 1997, that game blew everyone's minds due to the graphics. The marketing and the graphics made it sold more than it ever should. People bash on it nowadays because it didn't age well contrary to 6, but for that time, that was the equivalent of a super AAA game made in PS5.
I guess this detailed context doesn't work in this jokey podcast. Roblox is just more obvious.

6 had the best characters. Terra and Celes especially. I was truly interested in and concerned with Terra. Her story was like something out of a good 90s anime movie. Plus yeah the graphics, music and overall mood of the whole game. no other Final Fantasy has come close for me. I've played them all expect the online ones.

Yes, this is something I've thought about quite a bit actually but never really heard anyone say. They are great concepts for female characters- which a lot of people seem to have trouble writing.
Vivi is a better character than Terra and Celes.

@@keon5100 Eh, in the 1st half she might be the most important character, but I still get the feeling that Locke is supposed to be the audience's PoV for most of it. And then, Terra doesn't really play any major part in the World of Ruins, really, so I would go with the "There is no real protagonist" choice.

I think VI was Uematsu's work of art. I love almost every song from that game and don't get me started on Dancing Mad, 17 minutes of pure epicness.
Uematsu stated that 8 was his magnum opus tho, things like the Extreme and Liberei Fatali are iconic.
@@yammoto148 Uematsu didn't state FF8 is his magnum opus but 9 is his magnun opus. Its FF9 where he prepared extensively going on his way to go to europe for research. Its the one where he stated that its his masterpiece therefor its his magnum opus. He also took a break after since it drained him in terms of creativity. Lastly with all his interviews FF6 and 9 where his consistent on telling its his masterpiece while 8 is just a specific music that he likes.

I feel like I'm one of the few people that played 6, but don't love it as much as everyone else. Like, it's a great game, but somehow I don't have the same connection to it that others seem to have. That being said, as I was thinking about writing this comment, I was trying to think of the overall plot of the game, which led me down a rabbit hole of thinking of all the awesome moments that game has, and I forgot how many of them it has. I can definetely see why people value it this highly.
For real, though, as someone who's only played like 8 of the main line games, Final Fantasy IX is where it's at for me, when it comes to classic Final Fantasy. I'm not the biggest fan of the turn based battle systems, so it comes down to all the other things, in terms of how much I like the games, and I just love the characters and vibes of 9 so much. Every area/ story beat is like a character moment it's just such a character driven story, overall, it's great. Like, I don't even care about the overarching plot all that much, because these little moments for all the characters is where the game truly shines.
FF VI was my gateway drug into jrpg - the music, story, and depth is nigh unparalleled, especially in its genre. FF VII also has a special place in my heart, the battle system is one of the greatest of all time, and the story and music is just amazing. It also to this day is one of the only games to have made me cry and I learned how to draw people by mimicking the art from the manual. I still draw characters and people in the "Cloud" pose. Both are up there as my favorite final fantasy games, with X and Tactics following behind.
I played FFVI for the first time in primary school. Before that, I think games are just platformer, something to kill times. My mind's blown by FFVI, changed my outlook on games forever. Also, the first game that made me cries. I didn't even know a game could do that before then

Truer words have never been spoken. FF6 is art! It is amazing what they were able to accomplish with this game in 1994 on a SNES cartridge. So much heart and charm.

final fantasy six has one of the greatest, most epic, deep, incredible stories in video game history. and the fact that it still holds its reputation since its release all the way back in 1994 says something about how stellar this game really is. easily my favorite in the series and probably my favorite RPG of all time. I can’t wait for the pixel remaster to come out to experience it in HD.

Especially for the times. And even if it was, it's not about crazy innovative story beats, but how the character arcs are deeply relatable, unlike more stereotypical "anime protagonist". @@alexappsapp1332

Anyone that hadn't played FF6 yet and is looking for a reason, I'll give three of which I think is the best.
1. There's an opera part that will surely be memorable.

I think story and character wise FF6 and FF7 are very different but near equal. What makes FF7 better for me is the materia system. I don't like the Esper system. It's super grindy and magic is super strong which makes sense thematically but just makes you compelled to grind for hours to get all the magic. In FF7 you can repurpose the materia across characters and the growth modifiers and materia slots factor into what weapon you use. That and limit breaks make FF7 way more fun.

Ff6 is one of my favorite game I've ever played. It also has the best soundtracks especially terra's theme song.
That's what people forget about Final Fantasy 6. This was really the first game that truly felt cinematic, even FF4 (I played FF5 years after) despite also being story driven still felt like a game with cutscenes. FF6 was just a class on it's own at the time.

Man I love FF6. Every aspect of it was great. And it has a specific feeling that it gives me that no other game gives me
FF6 had one of the largest cast of characters, and not just the player characters. All of the player characters, with the exception of the secret ones (Gogo and Umaru) all have dedicated stories for them you can uncover. From beginning to end it was complete story. FF7 before all the sequels, you beat Sephiroth and the game like 500 years into the future and we see Red. We have no idea what happened to everyone else. We got Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, and Advent Children. And they fleshed the world before and after more but created even more questions, though editing choices made Advent Children a little confusing on some details (Advent Children complete cleans a lot of it up). FF7 remake is a misnomer, Sephiroth has somehow rebooted the time line??.
Ff6 managed to juggle a lot of characters and make them all memorable. That is an achievement.

I liked 6-7 but people really hate on the newer FFs for stupid reasons. In fact for those reasons my favorite is 13, not just to spite people but I genuinely enjoyed it.
I thinks the same also happened to Tales, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon etc. The mentality of the newest is trash, the older games are better. Seriously, just let people enjoy what they want.

I agree that "hardcore" FF fans pick 6 over 7, but 7 did so much to advance JRPGs and introduced so many people to them. There is no way RPGs would be half as popular as they are today without FF7. So many people have FF7 as their first RPG, and as we all know, you're going to have super thick nostalgia glasses for your first RPG, especially if you were brought into the genre halfway through your gaming life.
I'll try like crazy to make those people understand that 7 is nowhere close to 6 in greatness though!

The SquareSoft team just couldn't miss back then, despite how experimental, uncouth and flawed the mechanics were, the games they made were consistently fascinating and ground-breaking.
I never played one through three but I know four through 10 are all amazing in their own ways. My favorite will always be six or seven, hard to decide

I cannot believe that in my perusing through youtube during an FFVI nostalgia hole, I end up on a video featuring CoNnUrrrrr who I discovered via Ironmouse, who herself was a random discovery.

I played VI and VII for the first time in the same year, and I love both of them. But to me, VII was just way better. I felt like those Roblox people were real people with souls and world views; whereas I think VI had a cast of lovable characters with really great arcs, but none of them felt that deep. With VII there was this massive unifying theme that brought everything together and left me contemplating my place in the universe. For me, VI was like a really good MCU movie with a solid threat that challenges all the characters to grow in a really beautiful way, with unexpected twists and turns, but VII was like a worldview defining Ghibli movie about spirituality and meaning that challenged me to grow, confronting me with my own authenticity and mortality. Both are 10 / 10 experiences, just one defines a great RPG while the other transcends being a game.
It’s because you’re likely younger and grew up with 3D style games which you feel are more “real”. You certainly can not sit there and tell me however that 7 hasn’t aged poorly and it’s story is in anyway special, that’s a fact! There’s a reason why so many proclaim Finial Fantasy 6 as a masterpiece and if you had grown up from the very start and followed the series into 7 you’d likely seen it isn’t as special as you think it is like many of us older fans.
@@werewolflover8636 As an 80s baby and veteran FF fan myself, I completely disagree with you. 7 has only aged poorly in it's character models, the story is actually more relevant than ever now, what with its eco-terrorist, spiritual focus on restoring balance to the planet. It also has one of the greatest twists in gaming ever (and no I'm not talking about Aerith). I would actually reverse your opinion back on to yourself and say that the reason you revere 6 so much is because you view it with rose tinted glasses and played it at a time in your life when you were more impressionable. To me, its 6's plot that hasnt held up..its a standard, over simplistic good guys verses evil empire story

as a guy who has played most the final fantasy games yeah Joey is absolutely right 7 is important cause it got so many into the genre but 6 is better because it was the culmination of the previous 5 games into one where everything just came together from game play to story to music and even the sprites yeah they look dated but to this day those are the best sprites on the snes cause they were so expressive and you could get exactly how a character felt from the various poses they had like Joey said this game is art

FF6 got me to learn english at an accelerated pace at a young age. It really was THAT interesting. It was a work of art. Friendship, love, culture, evil... it exposed so many personality-defining topics for a kid.

Ff6 on snes is #1 period. 13 is also underrated and awesome.
I really like XV, even that it's a bit unfinished, the story, the 4 characters and the villain are god tier. But i still think Xenoblade Chronicles and NieR are the best

Im still salty how FFXV got treated. It's a game where it can easily one of the best JRPG of all time if they just treated it correctly and was successful. But unfortunately it had development problems that's why the game turned out like this. Half-baked game and they cancelled the DLC that was going to give a alternate good ending.

6 was fantastic but I'm more about a main character type plot. I think it will always be about Terra though.......7 is still my fav clouds redemption arc is unrivaled......8 I liked lagunas story the most.....in 6 my favorite was seltzer, his story hit me hard.

@@SeasideStrangler Well, for the older generation 6 was incredible because Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG made up like this triad of great SNES Square games.
FF6 was the first one where it felt like they were trying to compete with and be the next Disney and Studio Ghibli from my view (Lion King had come out at the time), it also had an roaring orchestral soundtrack with even opera with only 8 notes playable at a time on 22khz waveforms, it was at the time an amazing technical feat visually as well and from a writing standpoint FF1-5 seemed plain and boring, you weren’t just some heroes gone out to fight evil but there were a multitude of very human feeling characters with their own personal dramas.
It led up to the FF7-9 generation, which I felt drew inspiration also from the point and click adventure games at the time, having fixed camera perspectives instead of the 3rd person where you’d rate at the ground all the time, so I always felt FF7-9 had way better cinematography than most any other FF games to date.
FF6 deserves a remake and a movie like LOTR.

I thought the story in 7 was a little weird with the whole 'I don't remember if I was actually in soldier' thing, and I do remember that at the time I first played it I thought that was a little stupid. I think the music in FF8 was the best in the series. Not the best game in the series, but I think they did a really great job with the music. The music in 6 is very good considering the limitations of the SNES/Super Famicom hardware. I think overall, 6 is the best FF game story wise. The Playstation changed the industry though when it came to things like music in console games...

I was sorta late to FF. My first FF was 10 and played 11 for a decade, but FF6 is the best product thus far the visual story cutscene movie for 12 is pretty good as well.

See, I feel the same way about FF7, where I don't care how it looks or how poorly the graphics aged. It's just legitimately a good game with great characters, a great world, and great gameplay.
That being said, I really love FF6 too, for a lot of the same reasons. Both amazing games.
Materia is way better than Espers so 7 is immediately better than 6 for me.

Even if 6 is not the best it's up their with best: 4, 6, 7 and Tactics are games that everyone should play. I think 12 was also up there but I know for many this game just did not gel with them.
If you were to split final fantasy into different eras you would have the Nintendo era from 1-6, the PS1 era from. 7-9, the PS2 era from X-12, and then the identity crisis era after. With that being said, 6 is the greatest final fantasy game imo because it took the style from its particular era and ran with it going to a higher peak than any other game in the series for its own era. 6 is that Nintendo era FF fully realized, Squaresoft could not have made a more perfect FF game for that hardware. The pixel art, the music, the presentation, was perfect and timeless. Paired that with great characters and an epic saga. It was simply squaresoft at their best, relative to the hardware limitations they were subjected to. 7 will always be credited bringing game design to new heights, but it was the first attempt at a new hardware, and it didn’t quite age as gracefully as 6. I would even argue that in that era, 9 was superior than 7. But even then, 9 didn’t have the polish and the timelessness of 6.

YES! FF6 is THE BEST FF in the franchise! THANK YOU! Everytime the people around me fanboy/girl-ing about FF7, i knew they had never played FF6 before, and i cant fault them because most people jumped into the franchise on the PlayStation.
I was so surprised recently when i got to go watch the FF orchestra (Distant Worlds), and nobody made any sound (maybe a tiny bit) when FF4 and FF6 were playing. But when FF7 came (and the titles after) everybody was like hyped up. I literally was like "are you kidding me?". Don't get me wrong tho... FF7 and onwards were nice but IMHO the storyline, the gameplay, the excitement and adrenaline cant be compared to FF6. There were many scenes in FF6 where it was gut wrenching and heart breaking that even echoed to me this day.
I demand more love for FF6! (lol) Hopefully with the remake of FF6 it might come true? But I've no idea if it could recapture the magic with the new graphics tho. :/
Both FF6 and FF7 have the best cast of characters and they become more easily fleshed out and well beloved. FF7 may be my favorite, but I prefer to acknowledge FF6 for being such an incredible masterpiece and one of the best FF game in the series.
I would say that FF4 had a stronger cast than FF6, and FF7 is on the level of FF4 for cast.

It really is the best one. I played it for the first time last year and loved it so it wasn't just nostalgia. The moment I heard the map theme it just hit right
I am running a D&D game for a bunch of high school kids, where I stole a ton of NPC, the map, world conflicts, etc from ffvi (and modified them to fit d&d) and I was floored when a 18 year old kid saw what I was doing.

shadow hearts series has the best fight themes. ff9 has 2nd best but my fav game still ff6
