I loved Javier Bardem's acting in the movie. He radiated calm collected confidence and he spoke his lines like a true leader. Absolutely great performance.
As a fellow Spaniard, I'm also looking forward to see Javier's performance. He's a national treasure. Also, on a more personal note, as great as Spanish culture can be, I think it has a MASSIVE blind spot, and that's that it doesn't have much of an epic tradition, focusing way more on tragedy and comedy instead. If Javier's role in this big epic helps to remedy that inspiring other Spaniards to pursue epic art themselves, at least a little, I'll be thankful.

The Stilgar character in Dune was the center point on how to become Freman. Javier Bardem certainly has the looks for the character. All I can hope for is that the films presentation will do justice to Frank Herbert's original novels. Part of me wishes that Villeneuve and company would take a page from Jackson's playbook and film the whole story line at one shot for continuity reasons. Or "one and done". I really wish I had time to read all these fantastic novels again. Always seem too busy. Thank you. :) :) :)
Javier Bardem will make a formidable Stilgar. He will master the role ! He’s really the only one I am confident in for this new version of Dune. The 1984 version of Dune was the one I loved the most albeit it was at first deeply disturbing in parts. The characters were played absolutely perfectly in the David Lynch version. I really don’t know how anyone can attempt to follow in the steps of the acting genius Kenneth MacMillan for the Baron or Paul Smith as The Beast Rabban ...or the inscrutably attractive Brad Dourif as Pieter DevRies. These men completely aced their roles and I cannot see anyone else even attempting the level of mastery of these roles.
I really liked the actor cast as Stillgar in the first miniseries. I seem to be in a minority in this. I found the stoicism and restrained portrayal of Stillgar by Uwe fitting for the role as I pictured the character in my mind while reading the books. His appearence however did not fit but seemed less important to me at the time. Really excited to see what Javier can do in the role! He is amazing and certainly "looks" the part as well.
Javier Bardem is a better cast than any of the previous guys, so excited to see him in the role - the gravitas, charisma, stoic intensity, and ferocity.
I felt casting Bardem as Stilgar was a homer in. He’s a powerful man on the screen but, it’s gonna be tough to our do Everett McGill!!!!! I’d love to see it done!
Villeneuve is really going the extra mile to please the book's fan base. In light of how fans of Star Trek and Star Wars feel that later movies have strayed from their series' original inspiration, Villeneuve's careful treatment of Dune seems prudent.
Thrilled that Oscar winner,Javier Bardem is playing Stilgar, but EXTREMELY disappointed that it was pushed back 10 months! Seriously? With all that's going on in the world, we could all be dead by then! They should have got it there for 2020!
One of the great problems Paul had to deal with was the Fremen expecting Paul to have to fight and kill Stilgar. The answer showed the statesmanship Paul possessed.
I will need to see how well Javier pulls this off, but certainly better than previous actors in terms of basic presence. 1984, Stilgar comes off like a 60s savage found by the future people :p in 2000, the acting was better, but neither men held any physical presence on the camera. As long as Javier does not play Stilgar has some kind of cold monster, but rather the leader who reluctantly does what is needed without hesitation, I think he has the presence lacking in other adaptations :)
Across-the-board, the casting for the new movie is phenomenal. Its a who's who of the most all unique and bold actors around. Most movies would kill to have two or three of these actors. Pick any 3 from the main cast, and two of them would either be the best actor and best supporting actor, or the best protaginist and best antagonist, of any good movie. I simply cannot wait.

I personally liked McGill’s Stilgar and the way he spoke. I really think we’re in for a real treat with this new rendition. There was an AMC version of the 1984 Dune that was almost 4 hours that put a lot of footage back in and I really liked it. They show the making of the water of life by drowning a baby sand worm and the fight that Liet (so?) lost to Paul. They never released it for sale though. 😞 I really never enjoyed the SyFy mini series as it didn’t have the dark look my brain saw when I read the book. The Art Deco look of the original released.
@@jacobyoakum6498 You are correct. Jamis was "insulted" and felt he had to be a dick so, he took Paul on. He did not fair well and got boiled down to his water content. Not a bad way to give back to the community :D

Terrifying (but not for long), if you don't. I'm in between, I know what can happen, but I'm not trained in knife defense, or offense. Strange, how everyone in the book seems to be among the best knife fighters. Does that make Paul the best of the best of the best of the best.....?
Thanks for this video! I was interested to see a still shot of Javier Bardem as Stilgar. I’ve heard it expressed that the ‘blue within blue’ eyes of the Fremen are deep blue, but not luminescent. What’s your understanding?
Javier Bardem looks like a very good fit to play Stilgar. I think Everett McGill was great; he did a perfect portrayal of a religious fanatic; he was one of the best, most natural of all the players in D. Lynch's film, he never came off as affected as so many of the others did. I think Uwe Ochsenknecht was terribly miscast; he was too short, too old and could not carry himself like a charismatic warrior leader.
The 5 o'clock shadow look didn't sit right either. He needed a full beard, in my opinion. In contrast, Everett brought a bit of that animalistic charisma from QUEST FOR FIRE. That worked very well with Stilgar as a character.
I think it's appropriate for the Fremen to be played by actors of the same ethnicity, as they are quite enclosed with little outside contact. If that was the idea behind the casting of many of the actors playing the Fremen, why is Stilgar being played by a Spanish actor?
I think it makes sense for them to all be of the same ethnicity. Actors of Middle Eastern descent would make more sense to me as the idea of the struggle over spice has often been referred to as an analogy for the dependence of the West on oil. With the Fremen having similarities to Islamic and Arabic cultures.
@@NerdCookies I would have cast actors of middle eastern heritage too as the Fremen culture is quite Islamic. I have heard, however, that the decision not to do that was made so that people don't see the Fremen as muslim. Let's face it, although the Fremen are victims at the start of the story, it's not long before they turn into a bunch of blood-thirsty jihadis.
The Achilles' Heel of DUNE for modern audiences is the notion of Paul as a "Mighty Whitey" or "White Saviour". I would actually like for the Fremen to have a variance in racial appearance. It may help to deflect any comparison to tragic events throughout history here on Earth. Embracing other ideas prevalent in the story and extended universe, I was willing to overlook this one sore, controversial aspect. For the sake of fans and Villeneuve's inspired vision, let's hope this is the case for filmgoers in late 2020-21 as well.
The Moors ruled Spain for over 800 years. Many Spaniards have Middle Eastern blood because of it. I think Mr. Bardem is an excellent stand in for Stilgar.
Hmm, all this time I've been short sighted thinking jihad was changed because it was a buzz word.... Stilgar is such an important character - he is another mentor of Paul, and as he's the uncle of Chani (in the book) he can also be considered almost a relation. He really teaches Paul what it means to be a Fremen. I was actually quite excited to hear Javier Bardem was cast as Stilgar - it was one of those castings where I really thought "jackpot". I never liked that guy who played the role in the David Lynch movie; he had a way of over-pronouncing the endings of words that I found most annoying; he sounded somewhat like someone still doing his training in acting school. I did not like the German actor they had in the first part of the miniseries (not as such, just that he was miscast in the role). Steven Berkoff in the Children of Dune miniseries was OK, and he could get really formidable when he was angry (which usually resulted in his wanting to "take that person's water"). I can't wait to see what Bardem makes of the role, but I am sure it will be first-rate - he's not the first Spaniard to win an Oscar for nothing.
