New Super Mario Bros DS along with the Wii entry are still the best games in this sub series. I have been playing NSMBDS in anticipation for SMB Wonder and i had forgotten how wacky the original NSMB was! It had stuff like snailicorns, unagis, platforms you can bump from under, ka-bombs, squigglers, a giant Wiggler... it all spiced up a relatively good 2D platformer, even if the new power ups are kinda lame. Honestly, NSMBDS should have gotten a remake on Switch, instead of a worse version of NSMBU on Switch.

Even when I bought it (this was my first Mario game), I had NO CLUE that there was an entire single-player part to the game. Sometimes you’d find Mario Party or Metroid Prime, but there was ALWAYS a lobby open for this and Mario Kart. I actually didn’t own this game until 2011 (because my allowance was so small). For YEARS, I lived off of basically no games, but I put in a million hours in DS Download play, and most of those hours were in this game. Not that hours were tracked on the DS, but I believe the same was true for most of my peers. To this day, I can’t recall something more fun than the VS. mode in NSMB. That mode was everything. (Even after I bought the game to host my own lobbies, I didn’t touch the single player mode at first because I was like “what is the point of playing by myself?”) TBH, I don’t think that most of my peers beat the game. They didn’t buy it for that or the mini games: just this one, childhood-staple mode.
The reason there was a gap between me buying my DS and then this game was because I was paying off the DS. I persuaded mom to loan me half of the money I needed and to let me pay it off because EVERYONE at my school had a DS and I was extremely upset about not being allowed to own a console. First I had to convince her to let me buy it (and it was expensive for child me!), but I had to convince her to give me a loan!! So yeah.
