    One way to make sure that you’re sanding the entire surface, is to spray it with a light coat of water based spot trace. That’s from my yacht painting days. It forces you to sand everything, whether you want to or not. A rigid sponge sanding block is good too. BTW, you do excellent work!

      Thanks Tom. In auto painting they use something similar called a guide coat. It’s usually used for leveling off primer etc before painting.

    The sand and polish is my favourite part 👀. I's nice to hear someone who knows what they're talking about. There's so much bad advice around painting and finishing in general. Watch that mic lol. I always use water. No need to make things wet enough that water is running into holes, and I hate dust everywhere (I guess I prefer mud everywhere 😂). Right edges. Paint pools on flats, so it creeps away from edges. On top of that, edges are naturally going to get a lot more pressure from sanding than distributed pressure over flat areas.

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya, I hear way too many people saying they have sanded through their finishes and it’s almost always on edges unfortunately.

    Great video. My father had a high-end auto restoration shop for about 35 years, and I sometimes did side jobs pairing electric guitars. Followed all the same steps you did in your video series. Just curious why you don’t use water with the wet-dry sandpaper. I realize using water is optional, but just curious why you prefer to not use water. Your TH-cam channel is great, btw.

      I would use water on a car or plastic parts. I avoid it on wood - it can cause swelling that results in the finish cracking.

    Hey Brad-Question about the 2k. After 24 hours i followed this cutting schedule:800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, compound and buffed. Guitar was glassy smooth and glossy like a factory finish. However up close i could still see all the scrstches from the sanding. Did i cut/buff too soon? Didnt keep paper clean enough? What do you think I did wrong? Or what would you recommend?

    • @BradAngove

    Hello Brad, i've put 3 coats of spraymax 2k on my guitar and waiting for it to dry 24+ hours. Due to vinyl stickers under the clear coat, plus some orange peel it's obvious that i'll need a thicker clear coat. My question is up to what grip do i need to sand the first 3 coats before i apply another 3 on top of that? AND if i sand the first 3 coats won't those sanding scratches be visible through the future upper layers ?

    • @BradAngove

    High sorry to comment but on that Ford color for the base coat what did it say on the can when I looked it up it said pacific green metalic on Amazon and that's what is coming up on images on Google and years ago I painted a guitar that exact same color from duplicolor but when I go to the store none of them have it. And when I ordered a can from my local autoparts store what was labeled pacific green was the wrong color there was a calypso green that fox body mustangs used there was cayman green that Ford rangers had prior to 1996. And pacific green metalic that explorers and mustangs used from 1996 to 1998.
    Ford did not have that duplicolor makes or made something called calypso blue that's a generic vague term as there are tons of teal calypso blue variations and so if you could reply back with what Exact Ford color that it says on the can that would be great thanks and duplicolor does work well on guitar bodies.

      And sorry if I sounded frustrated but for a body I need to paint because I like to use boiled linseed oil first then let it soak that means I can only use oil based paints.
      And the other frustration is with the colors I want it's been tough finding them in laquars enamels I am finding but then it's giving me satin matte and that nonsense. Over a basecoat the sheen comes from the clear.
      But for me I plan to use deft laquar sealer sandable primer then I Grey primer that's sandable base then clear.
      But calypso blue helps.

    I've been experimenting with every finish apart from 2k because I don't have an air-fed mask. I've been wasting my time though I think! Is it ok to use a conventional mask with it? I'm only painting 2 - 3 guitars a year tops.

    • @pedraw
      @pedraw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ventilation is the key. The isocyanates are what get you with these catalyzed paints. basically if you use a regular mask I'd spray outdoors if possible. If you can smell the fumes your mask is failing.

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a full-face mask, but not an air-fed one. Having a fan or booth to help move fumes away from you is also very helpful. My sense is that if I can't smell it at all and don't get it on myself or experience any irritation, I am probably ok. With that said, I am no expert on the safety aspects of the stuff.

    • @BradAngove

    Brad, I've painted 4 guitars using this method and am having a bit of a problem. Around the neck joint on the body, specifically the sides of the block the neck attaches to, I keep getting a white milky type of look in sections. My most recent paint job had the same thing, but also had larger areas of it on the lower back portion. I am using DupliColor Perfect Match paint and SprayMax 2k clear. I am also wet sanding up to 3000 grit, the polishing. I'm assuming it's moisture under the clear, but I don't know. 1) What can I do to stop it from happening, and 2) Is there any way to fix it after it happens. Thanks for all your help and tutorials!

    I just can't bear to take dry sand paper to a clear coated guitar body. Take an old candle stub, melt or at least soften a bit of it. With a split popsicle stick or other smooth edged small thing nonmetal rub some that candle wax into all the screw holes. DO NOT accidentally smear wax on the body. Now she's ready for trouble free wet sanding. And don't drown the body in mildly soapy water! It doesn't take so much , you'll get the feel of it.
