I'm looking forward to trying to make my own blade soon. One tip that was left out of the video. G10 is basically fiberglass sheet. If you are cutting or sanding on it gloves and proper breathing protection should be used. The gloves are not an absolute necessity, but the breathing protection should be a priority. Inhaling glass fibers is not a good thing. Gloves will just keep your hand from getting itchy from the glass fibers getting stuck in your skin. If carbon fiber is being used for scales breathing protection is an absolute must. The dust that carbon fiber creates is like thousands of tiny razor sharp harpoons. Once that dust makes it to your lungs it's not going to come out.
How much was the heating things? I actually got started on this a couple years ago but as i didnt have the propane, other torch, and ...... oven thing?? I gave up
@@alexmaurice4274 You can make a firepit and get some charcoal and a hair dryer or some other way of blowing air into the flame, burn the coal til it glows hot red, put the knife in, shovel some of the coal on top of the knife and then blow air onto it to really stoke the coal
I dont mean to be off topic but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account? I was dumb forgot the account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
Thank you for making this video. I have been doing research for weeks trying to figure out what tools are a must have and what tools just makes things easier. I’ll be using this video as a roadmap to success for my first knife.
Hey Jeremy - I know that this series is about 3-1/2 years old now but just found it. I have been soaking up all that I can on knife making and there is a lot of really good, informative videos out there. Yours, in my opinion, is the best. I really appreciate you taking the time to bring us along for the ride and all the time you took to show newbies how to begin. All of your videos that I have seen thus far are just fantastic. Thanks and don't change a thing!!
You have no idea, how much I have enjoyed these tutorials. To see this going from start to finish all done without power tools, has been absolutely brilliant! this puts knife making within anyone's reach. I have subscribed! and looking forward to watching the brilliant line up of videos you have.
hahaha thank you very much! I was sure that was going to be edited out when I shot it and had forgotten about it. Then when I was going through the footage, it came up unexpectedly and made me laugh. Thought I might as well throw it in for comic relief:) Cheers!
Thank you for the information on how to get started I've been watching lots of videos yours is the one that truly makes me think I can really get started and see if I can do it
Anyone else get a Bob Ross-esque feel from this part 3 video? all jokes aside though, thanks for going thru the motions on this series, and other videos. Educating, entertaining, and really cool!
Sorry for the bother , but im just gana get started in knife making. What steel did u buy and when did u buy it? Sorry for all the questions its just this is the 1st channel that throughly explains how to make knives by hand!
Love making knifes, my grandpa made all kinds of them so did my father both brothets and myself .i think that may explain why i love this little knife you made :-)
I see a lot of people asking for where to buy the steel it's 01 tool steel. Choose 30-50mm in width: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ground-Flat-Stock-Gauge-Plate-6mm-O1-Tool-Steel/331467749934?rt=nc&_soffid=5010772200&_soffType=OrderSubTotalOffer&_trksid=p5731.m3795
I got some 01 4mm thick and 40mm width. I have a Dremel and it's not really fun removing large amounts of material lol. I bought a cheap hack saw that was doa. Recently told I should buy bimetal blades for it. Going to pick some up for my next knife.
Thank you very much! Yeah, if the camera doesn't have something it knows it should be focusing on it gets all willy-nilly. That was with a 70D but I think I'll stick with my crappy cam for shop work from now on. Cheers!
I just finished my first hand filed knife. I absolutely love it. Made from a planer blade and bamboo flooring for the scales with hollow pins.pretty much followed your process nd it came out amazing. Sharpest knife I have ever owned with very little time on the sharpening stones.
Thank you very much. I've heard that from quite a few folks that buying good tool steel (in small quantities) isn't easy. I hope you do end up getting some:)
Jeremy, I have watched this video at least 4 times. Thanks for making it. I'm working on my 1st knife at the moment and will be using a lot of your tips. Thank you!
Hey how much was the heating stuff. No offense to him but idk why he didnt throw that stuff in the first video the stuff we needed to heat it and stuff
This is excellent, thank you! One question that no channel seems to address: WHERE do you get your materials for the knife itself? Where do you buy the steel and the material for the handle? Will any hardware shop have it?
+Manuel Provencio right on! I think you're go my to enjoy it! When you do get it done, send it in and I can feature it in one of my viewer's knives videos. Thanks for the great comment and you're welcome👍
Very nice work. I've never tried making a knife, but I'm so so f**ing excited to do it ! Any beginner tips you could offer me I'll take them. Thanks for sharing ^^
Thank you! I'm glad you're excited to make a knife. Other than what's in the video (and other videos online) just get out there and have at it. You'll find ways that work better for you than others, and also don't be afraid to adapt your process to various tools that you might have available. It something that once you get into doing it, you'll figure things out and make knives in a method and style that are unique to you. Cheers!
Thank you for the videos they were very informative I've always wanted to make a blade but this is a good starting point to test the waters once again thank you
I've been knife making for awhile and I always find vedios like this to be very help I have also found a trick when cutting the profile my cut off wheel broke one me and the whole tool was useless I used my drill press to drill holes around the profile that were very close together I was then able to put it in a vise and with hammer and a little bending I was able to free the knife and then with some files and my belt sander I was able to bring it to profile I wanted but if you use this method I advise using a drill press and brand new sharp drill bits cause you will dull the bit out as you using this method
One tip I would add for anyone who has never made a knife before: If you're not using someone else's template or closely basing your design off an existing knife, do a lot of sketches and cut them out on cardboard or something to test how things fit in your hand and look aesthetically. If you take the time to start off with a properly designed blade you will be way happier with your final result. My first blade, like a lot of peoples', I kind of just went with my first drawing I did, finished it up and was pretty unsatisfied with how it actually looked and felt. The next one I sketched a bunch of concepts and even did different sized versions of some of them until I found something I was happy with. Upon finishing I had a much nicer knife than my first.
i recently found a hella rusty yet cool looking machete and ive decided to try to restore it. got the rust off and removed the old handle, making a new one will certaintly be a challenge for me due to having very limited tools and no experience so far, but it will surely keep me busy at least. hope i can pull it off with some of the tips and methods used in this video!
Great knife making video series! A couple questions as I'm finally going to give it a go. 1. What is a good 01 tool steel thickness for a small camp knife? I was thinking 3/16" or 1/8" would 1/8" hold up? 2. Should I file with the same angle as I plan to sharpen the knife? What is a good angle for camping durability for whittling & cutting paracord, and fishing line? I was thinking 20°? 3. Being that I plan to use it for fishing should I choose stainless for the blade? I do understand it is much harder to manipulate.
I'm just getting into trying out knife making as a hobby, question I have is what (pins) do you use to hold the handles on? And where is the best place to get them?
You just made me want to build a Knife even more know. it looks a lot more easier than i thought it was.. ?? tho where do I get the steel for the knife? Thank you for this video/
Dang, that's a beautiful design. I love small knives!
Thank you!

I finished my first knife yesterday. I made it all by hand using the this process. thank you so much! I'm so excited I've started on number 2.

You can give your knife to a heating service

Good series.

Beautiful knife. You should produce these using powered tools of course and sell them. It looks like a great handy small fixed blade
Great knife making video series! A couple questions as I'm finally going to give it a go.
1. What is a good 01 tool steel
thickness for a small camp
knife? I was thinking 3/16" or
1/8" would 1/8" hold up?
2. Should I file with the same
angle as I plan to sharpen the
knife? What is a good angle for
camping durability for whittling

line? I was thinking 20°?
3. Being that I plan to use it for
fishing should I choose
stainless for the blade? I do
understand it is much harder to
manipulate.
pretty little knife. really liked the vid. thanks!
