Hi, I'm new to the 360 scene. Is it necessary to have the expensive Premiere Pro when using a Mac Laptop to edit the videos? I thought that GoPro and Insta 360 provided software? Can we use iMovie?
Did you recognize the distortion in the GoPro footage? It happened when you walked to the lake and the camera was in your back. Over your head is a good visible distortion (Minute 4:41 until Minute 4:53). Anything like that was not visible in the Insta footage. I wonder if this distortion was caused by the pole or at the point where both cameras are stitched together. The footage of the Insta is more saturated (what i prefer) than the GoPro, but GoPro looks a bit more natural. The sound is better on Insta, i think. I heard a disturbing wind noise in the GoPro footage. Having seen this comparison i would go for the Insta, even if there is a problem with losing the settings. That could be fixed with a software-update, while the distortion and the wind noise can not be that easily fixed with a software-update.
in 4:39 , if you keep an eye on the top of your head there seems to be some pixelating going on. Whats causing this? maybe this is where the stitching line is depending on how you held the camera?
@@AlrosAvellana Its the bottom part of the camera facing the top of my head when I hold it backwards. There seems to be some funky stitching at the nadir which they need to improve. It's usually ok on the sides.
Hi, I think what's make the stitching line bad is that little mount screw because its thick and 3 inches or so far from the lines, try to find smaller alternative screw and let me know the results please. I might buy gopro max but not sure yet for few things.
ALOHA! BIGGEST question… can you edit and record on the fly (in app) with the GoPro app as you can with the X app? Meaning in recoded time (in app VR cell-phone) can you hit record to follow YOUR preferred POV cell-phone video so to show your POV track as if YOU were looking at it for your best points of view?

Great video. I noticed a noticeable visual/clarity difference between the 360 footage vs your in-studio camera footage. What camera were you shooting on in the studio and at what resolution? I'm quite unsatisfied with the quality of the footage that's coming out of the 360 cameras at 1080 resolution; they are a bit soft, blurry and grainy even in outside lighting. Do you notice the same?
In-Studio I am using the GH5. It's difficult for 360 cameras to achieve the same clarity because of the nature of 360 video. It's a trade off between clarity or never missing the shot I guess!

Just processed your sample files in Davinci Resolve. I had to use optimised files because the video was slightly jumpy but the main problem was the audio was lagging. After doing that it was fine without using half or quarter resolution proxies. Rendered in 1080 and looks fine. I put a LUT on it too and this didn't cause any picture breakup. I notice the sample files have a 150mbps bit rate! Some PC's and/or software will have an issue with this. I switched from PowerDirector to Resolve for a lot of reasons but high bit rate file handling was a big one. The last video I did with the Insta 360 I exported 2.7k files from Insta Studio, worked with a 2.7k timeline in Resolve and exported to TH-cam in 2.7k. This did result in an acceptable quality video from TH-cam but was a 10.5GB file for a 12-minute video!
Just to be clear on the downloadable footage: The files you are downloading are a shorter and "compressed" version of the original GoPro .mov files to .mp4. I set the bit rate to 150mbps to retain as much information as possible. So the downloadable footage will not playback flawlessly like the .mov files demonstrated in the video :)

But I would also say, wait at least 1 more week until 7th Nov. There is a couple of updates coming that is worth waiting to see what it is, and if it will change our decision.

What's the distortion like? If it's a little bit jelly then it's the gopro stitching. I need to figure out best practices to reduce the artifacts near the stitch line
Excellent point on losing the settings when stopping the recording. No other review his mentioned that as far as I've seen. Voice commands are great for shooting when you don't want to be in the shot. Thanks for the review!

I just tried the MAX on the Extended Selfie Stick and it is NOT invisible. The bottom stitch line of the GoPro is really bad. It cut my face in 2. I am hoping a firmware update will solve the stitching problem at the nadir. Sometimes it's fine and sometimes it's rubbish... The GoPro MAX and ONE X comparison video is slightly delayed because there is going to be an update by Insta360 sometime this week! So once that's out then I can make a comparison with the latest firmware.
@@Best360 ah I see. So it's the firmware for Max, just like taking video underwater (that Max would be slightly blurry (correct me if Im wrong) due to it's dome lens). @@Cashewnutella The stitching for MAX will never be as good as the ONE X because it has a thicker body. A firmware update will just reduce the distortion of the stitch line. MAX cannot record 360 video underwater. You will need their underwater case which is in development.

having background music is not helping for comparing audio diffrences... but otherwise great video. As someone else said understanding how quick the work folow is with the two uinits would be very important. If I had to wait hours longer for one to proccess the video over the other that would be a big factor for most people.
There will be another video about workflow but I'm waiting for an Insta360 ONE X update next week before making this video. The audio comparisons were just for the voice tests 😅
Hypersmooth is the name of the stabilisation. A bike ride will be more stable with the MAX than GoPro 8. But GoPro 8 will have higher video quality but only looks in 1 direction. GoPro MAX will have lower video quality but you can see everywhere.
@@anything7087 Yes MAX has better stabilisation because it has more video to play around with. Yep precisely, 1080p vs 4K. But if you are just posting to social media like Instagram or Facebook then 4K is overkill anyway.
unfortunately no, because the only way to do that would be converting to dynamic binaural format : I'm looking for years a software to do that with spatial automation on sound object.

Thanks! GoPro 8 will film very high quality 4K/60 video. With GoPro MAX, when you reframe 5.6K/25 video, you will end up with 960p-1080p looking footage at best. There is no slow motion on GoPro MAX.

I think they both have similar issues with stitching. But ONE R video quality is a little better than MAX. And at least you get slow motion with Insta360. And other exclusive features like Night Shot, Bullet time and soo much more
haha, but all 360 TH-camrs do have all the 360s at home, self Paid or sponsered? :P well, Max has been delivered today, bought it for 400 eur.. probably will sell the X and the EVO. Never had a GoPro, but for sure will buy the R from Insta ;) Always good to have several cams.. Kandao would you recommend yet?
@@i_love_europapark The Qoocam 8K quality is great! But the stitching isn't good at the moment. Which is why I have not uploaded any sample footage yet. I do wish there is a sequel to the ONE X.

I watched with great interest your comparison of the two cameras. I did not see a clear winner. Maybe GoPro shoots videos a little better. Insta 360 ONE X Has huge problems in communicating with Android smartphones. I look forward to comparing photos.
Yes - do wait until 7th November for Kandao to see what innovations they have come up with 👍. And I believe something is on the horizon soon for Insta360 also, whether that's a firmware update or camera update...
I personally think the Insta360 footage was better. You can clearly see the purple fringing in the branches and leaves at around 4:04 from the GoPro Max that you don’t see from the One X. The microphone is definitely better on the Max and the voice control is a nice feature too, I just don’t think it’s worth almost $100 more for those features especially with the fringing in the video footage which really turns me off from it.

Thanks for this comparison! I think that another easy win for GoPro Max is the fact that it's rugged and waterproof without need for any additional cases. It's just meant for sports.
Shame you didn’t edit it how the most of us would, you’ve had to spend a lot of time to get that footage, the purpose of these cameras is to get quick ready to go footage not muck around in expensive editing programs , you could make an iPhone 5 look great with all the tweaking . Enjoyed the video nonetheless, I don’t see any reason to get one of these over my insta, the next Gen insta is what I’m looking forward to

Scojo, I oderd my GoPro Max when the option first appeared. Amazon says the delivery date is mid-November. Best buy (NC) says they can mail it to me by the end of October. Should I cancel my Amazon order? When do you expect to get yours? Or anyone having the same experiance please advise.

I just got my Max. I never use voice control because I use my GoPro cams as security and fun. It's my understanding that anyone can tell your cam to stop recording because it's not voice-specific...unless that has changed. Re. your comparison, good stuff. I would've liked to have seen the footage in split screen for some comparison shots. I have both also and am keeping my Insta for the bullet feature. Neither are great quality-wise IMO. I think consumer 360 cams have a long way to go. The Insta remains lighter weight (without that chunky Venture case). Finally, I hear that Insta's coming out with a competitive new cam soon. I'd like to see that comparison.

Another great video Shanil - getting thrown out the park that was hilarious 😂. Interesting what you say about voice control I haven’t ever used that feature - I assume you just keep the beeps on to reassure you it’s recording? I had real issues with the workflow - I used exporter at first but then it stopped importing the audio on all the files, so frustrating so I edited on the app which was more time consuming. I wish they had a desktop editor even as a back up. I loved using the Max though. It will be interesting to see if insta360 put a touch screen on their next version, makes such a difference. 👍🏼
Hard to say... I still tend to use all the 360 cameras depending on what I need it for. If I had to pick one I would say ONE X because old is gold! The new ones need a lot of firmware and software updates before its potential is unlocked
Does Gopro max come with an invisible selfie stick? That really is why I bought the Insta360 X one. It’s an entirely different function and depth which I would miss too much. That’s basically what I have the camera for...
@@ninnin331 I am using the Bushman Monopod V2. But you can also use the Insta360 Invisible Selfie Stick. You will need a GoPro to 1/4" screw converter to use the GoPro MAX on these selfie sticks.
Most casual users won’t care about the stitch line, besides it’s not as bad as theta and Vuzexr, As per my experience with fusion and ONEX I was pretty sure that Max will have better picture/video and Audio quality as the GoPro’s lens quality is dam good. I was waiting for this comparison. I have and love my insta 360 one x... but there are some things i really like about the Max. In particular, the audio , front screen, changeable lens covers & water-proofing. I may have to include it my kit.
The question I have is.. is it worth the extra money. I was able to pick up a creator kit with the Insta360 One X with 2 batteries, SD card, bullet time handle, and selfie stick for $350 on ebay new wrapped in the box. GoPro would be nice with the touch screen and waterproofing, but I'm not seeing much of a jump in video quality.
Bike Tall I have the Insta360 One X and have now bought the GoPro Max for the reasons you have listed. The GoPro video editor is really easy like the Insta too. 👍🏻

Thanks! Haha I'll try... But I know that Insta360 has a waterproof case for underwater. However the nadir of the case is visible. The GoPro cannot be used underwater. You will see the stitch line. But I think they are making a case for it. You can use the GoPro for surfing and similar water sports. Now there is HERO mode (uses one lens) which will work underwater soo that will be interesting!
WOW! This is a VERY GOOD comparison video between the Go Pro Max and Insta 360 One. Both are really good but I agree the clarify on the Go Pro did appear better for natural colours. Also during your 3 little pigs story (which I quiet enjoyed 😆) you sounded more clearer on the Go Pro. btw did you do the Pigs story to have a dig at the police woman that stopped you? 😆
Please render at a higher bitrate. The best way to get around TH-cam compression is by uploading at a much higher bitrate than would be needed for local viewing. I suggest 50Mbps for 1080p footage. This video is terribly compressed and the ruins the raw quality of the cameras.

You can Reframe your shots in Insta360 Studio and then edit the shots together in imovie

Yes the optical flow stitching on the MAX is a bit weird. It will improve over time 🙂

Yes - You can record your phone movements make an Overcapture video.

A 5.7k 360 video will give you at best 960p-1080p footage when reframed. So it won’t be as sharp as normal flat cameras

I would like to know if my macbook pro 13’ retina, mid 2014, 8gb ram, i5, 128gb ssd is good enough for workflow for gopro max??
No you need at least an i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD, GTX 1050 Ti. The file sizes are huge and the exporter and video editor needs a lot of processing power.
I watched a few reviews for gopro fusion and everyone said that you need insanely powerful computer for workflow

Woo someone finally noticed! I didn't experience any "Red Dot" on the MAX so far... But the ONE X suffers from the "Red Dot".

@@thewhitecoastmusic We are filming a comparison video tomorrow soo not long before we have an in depth comparison between GoPro MAX and Insta360 ONE X. But I would also say, wait at least 1 more week until 7th Nov. There is a couple of updates coming that is worth waiting to see what it is, and if it will change our decision.

Hey bud, great video. I have the Max, but I'm getting some strange distortion in my 360 videos. It seems to be around the stitching. Have you run into that problem at all?
What's the distortion like? If it's a little bit jelly then it's the gopro stitching. I need to figure out best practices to reduce the artifacts near the stitch line

There is no official GoPro Selfie Stick. The Insta360 Invisible Selfie Stick will work if you get a converter from GoPro mount to 1/4"

I just tried the MAX on the Extended Selfie Stick and it is NOT invisible. The bottom stitch line of the GoPro is really bad. It cut my face in 2. I am hoping a firmware update will solve the stitching problem at the nadir. Sometimes it's fine and sometimes it's rubbish...
The GoPro MAX and ONE X comparison video is slightly delayed because there is going to be an update by Insta360 sometime this week! So once that's out then I can make a comparison with the latest firmware.
@@Best360 ah I see. So it's the firmware for Max, just like taking video underwater (that Max would be slightly blurry (correct me if Im wrong) due to it's dome lens). Hopefully gopro would fix it with new firmware update in future.

@@Cashewnutella The stitching for MAX will never be as good as the ONE X because it has a thicker body. A firmware update will just reduce the distortion of the stitch line. MAX cannot record 360 video underwater. You will need their underwater case which is in development.

There is no HDR on MAX. I used HDR video on the ONE X when it was suitable to do so 😊👍
having background music is not helping for comparing audio diffrences... but otherwise great video. As someone else said understanding how quick the work folow is with the two uinits would be very important. If I had to wait hours longer for one to proccess the video over the other that would be a big factor for most people.
There will be another video about workflow but I'm waiting for an Insta360 ONE X update next week before making this video. The audio comparisons were just for the voice tests 😅

Hypersmooth is the name of the stabilisation. A bike ride will be more stable with the MAX than GoPro 8. But GoPro 8 will have higher video quality but only looks in 1 direction. GoPro MAX will have lower video quality but you can see everywhere.
Ok understand... by comparision hero7vs8 hero8 is best stabilization so max the best stabilization? Lower quality you mean 1080p vs 4k?
@@anything7087 Yes MAX has better stabilisation because it has more video to play around with. Yep precisely, 1080p vs 4K. But if you are just posting to social media like Instagram or Facebook then 4K is overkill anyway.

unfortunately no, because the only way to do that would be converting to dynamic binaural format : I'm looking for years a software to do that with spatial automation on sound object.

Thanks! GoPro 8 will film very high quality 4K/60 video. With GoPro MAX, when you reframe 5.6K/25 video, you will end up with 960p-1080p looking footage at best. There is no slow motion on GoPro MAX.

You can only record 5.6K video which is around 500-600mb per minute in h265.

Now that the Insta R has been released, would you say that Max is still better? I have ordered the Max, however will also order the R.
I think they both have similar issues with stitching. But ONE R video quality is a little better than MAX. And at least you get slow motion with Insta360. And other exclusive features like Night Shot, Bullet time and soo much more

I watched with great interest your comparison of the two cameras. I did not see a clear winner. Maybe GoPro shoots videos a little better. Insta 360 ONE X Has huge problems in communicating with Android smartphones. I look forward to comparing photos.

I personally think the Insta360 footage was better. You can clearly see the purple fringing in the branches and leaves at around 4:04 from the GoPro Max that you don’t see from the One X. The microphone is definitely better on the Max and the voice control is a nice feature too, I just don’t think it’s worth almost $100 more for those features especially with the fringing in the video footage which really turns me off from it.

Thanks for this comparison! I think that another easy win for GoPro Max is the fact that it's rugged and waterproof without need for any additional cases. It's just meant for sports.
Shame you didn’t edit it how the most of us would, you’ve had to spend a lot of time to get that footage, the purpose of these cameras is to get quick ready to go footage not muck around in expensive editing programs , you could make an iPhone 5 look great with all the tweaking . Enjoyed the video nonetheless, I don’t see any reason to get one of these over my insta, the next Gen insta is what I’m looking forward to

Scojo, I oderd my GoPro Max when the option first appeared. Amazon says the delivery date is mid-November. Best buy (NC) says they can mail it to me by the end of October. Should I cancel my Amazon order? When do you expect to get yours? Or anyone having the same experiance please advise.

I just got my Max. I never use voice control because I use my GoPro cams as security and fun. It's my understanding that anyone can tell your cam to stop recording because it's not voice-specific...unless that has changed. Re. your comparison, good stuff. I would've liked to have seen the footage in split screen for some comparison shots. I have both also and am keeping my Insta for the bullet feature. Neither are great quality-wise IMO. I think consumer 360 cams have a long way to go. The Insta remains lighter weight (without that chunky Venture case). Finally, I hear that Insta's coming out with a competitive new cam soon. I'd like to see that comparison.

Another great video Shanil - getting thrown out the park that was hilarious 😂. Interesting what you say about voice control I haven’t ever used that feature - I assume you just keep the beeps on to reassure you it’s recording? I had real issues with the workflow - I used exporter at first but then it stopped importing the audio on all the files, so frustrating so I edited on the app which was more time consuming. I wish they had a desktop editor even as a back up. I loved using the Max though. It will be interesting to see if insta360 put a touch screen on their next version, makes such a difference. 👍🏼

Hard to say... I still tend to use all the 360 cameras depending on what I need it for. If I had to pick one I would say ONE X because old is gold! The new ones need a lot of firmware and software updates before its potential is unlocked

@@ninnin331 I am using the Bushman Monopod V2. But you can also use the Insta360 Invisible Selfie Stick. You will need a GoPro to 1/4" screw converter to use the GoPro MAX on these selfie sticks.
The Max always seems a bit blurry to me? Max has better audio for sure. Max also was a bit more choppy on the footage. Sticking with the 360 one x!!
Most casual users won’t care about the stitch line, besides it’s not as bad as theta and Vuzexr, As per my experience with fusion and ONEX I was pretty sure that Max will have better picture/video and Audio quality as the GoPro’s lens quality is dam good.

I was waiting for this comparison. I have and love my insta 360 one x... but there are some things i really like about the Max. In particular, the audio , front screen, changeable lens covers & water-proofing. I may have to include it my kit.
The question I have is.. is it worth the extra money. I was able to pick up a creator kit with the Insta360 One X with 2 batteries, SD card, bullet time handle, and selfie stick for $350 on ebay new wrapped in the box. GoPro would be nice with the touch screen and waterproofing, but I'm not seeing much of a jump in video quality.
Bike Tall I have the Insta360 One X and have now bought the GoPro Max for the reasons you have listed. The GoPro video editor is really easy like the Insta too. 👍🏻

Thanks! Haha I'll try... But I know that Insta360 has a waterproof case for underwater. However the nadir of the case is visible. The GoPro cannot be used underwater. You will see the stitch line. But I think they are making a case for it. You can use the GoPro for surfing and similar water sports. Now there is HERO mode (uses one lens) which will work underwater soo that will be interesting!

Both are really good but I agree the clarify on the Go Pro did appear better for natural colours.
Also during your 3 little pigs story (which I quiet enjoyed 😆) you sounded more clearer on the Go Pro.

Please render at a higher bitrate. The best way to get around TH-cam compression is by uploading at a much higher bitrate than would be needed for local viewing. I suggest 50Mbps for 1080p footage. This video is terribly compressed and the ruins the raw quality of the cameras.
