I recall being introduced to: Pink Floyd at Pompeii at age 18 or 19 and being so completely overwhelmed by the strange beauty of it. Echoes especially was nearly tear inducing. I’m nearly 53 now and it’s still a perennial favorite.

I saw it performed by Mason's band at the Royal Albert Hall and tears of joy welled up. I was going to comment that the voiceover is incorrect that the surviving members don't perform the song but found this comment before I did. It is a great shame that Mason doesn't seem to have plans to release a Blu-ray of what is openly named "The Echoes Tour" as it was a sublime set.

It doesn't impedes Dave+Rick creativities and all the beautiful musical ideas they generated, but as pure instrumentists, they're just average. In a 10km radius around my home, there are at least a dozen guitarists playing better than Dave, and I don't live in a city, I'm about 40km south of Luxembourg in a town of about 10k along the river... I even know a pianist who has nothing to blush if compared to Chick Corea, a freaking monster...

I feel so privileged to have seen Floyd many times over the years but just one concert way back in 1975 at Knebworth the first time I saw them they did Echoes live the one and only time I have seen and heard it live it was awesome. RIP Rick

I understand how David feels completely. I've lost friends and there are places I won't go anymore because it just hurts too bad to be there with all of the memories those places bring back. Same with songs. Rick was under appreciated and some treated him poorly, may he Rest In Peace.
As a fan since 69' and as much as Echoes means in the history of PF, I get where Gilmore is coming from and I'm cool with it. Something about Echoes without the twin voices of Gilmore and Wright would be obviously missing something. From 72' to 75' I saw PF 4 times and Echoes was a major part of their set. As much as the song never gets old, I'll miss hearing it live but I'll have good memories to still make me smile. There is however one thing that does make me sad and that is with each passing day there are fewer and fewer of us who saw PF perform Echoes live and one day there will be none of us left. Somehow I hope the song finds a way to out live all of us and the future finds value in it. If so, we done good! RIP Rick, we miss you.
I was lucky enough to see PF over 30 years ago in concert and there is no comparison to any other band. I’m just happy I got to see them once in my lifetime.
I saw PF in Dallas at Mc Farland auditorium in 73, playing the entirety of Dark Side of the Moon-which I had not heard yet; I was still basking in the sounds of Meddle. Second set was a bunch of long classics. At one point, someone yelled out Echoes! Roger turned around and pointed his finger at the guy, but they didn’t play it…that is until the encore. My favorite rock vocals of all time are David and Richard singing together.
For me it started with One of These Days... The white noise and synth stuff... Bought Meddle in Prague CZ on a vacation, still got that album. Later bought Pompeii on DVD. It is for me the pivoting point of Pink Floyd. When they found their new sound with Gilmour. As an amateur synthesizer player, kudos to Richard Wright. Pink Floyd for me started with white noise from one of his synths (EMS?). It was one of these days, I was about eight years old when I heard that song for the first time...
The very best version of “Echoes” is from the 2007 release of “Remember That Night” recorded in 2006 at the Royal Albert Hall. It was the last time David and Richard played it together and it was like they knew it.
I could hear that magic from “Remember That Night “ the ESP call and response of Dave and Rick that was palpable in the way the song flows, they played off of each other and it really was a moment in time I will never forget. My respect to you Sir David. And at 63 now I love your music and the special way that you present it.
I was one of the fortunate fans to have witnessed a live rendition of Echoes Pt 1 when they played Maple Leaf Gardens in 1987 for their Momentary Lapse of Reason tour. I also understood why David Gilmour elected to excise it from the setlist for the simple fact that the song is pretty long and since it was followed up by both parts of Shine On You Crazy Diamond at the time, it made for a lengthy warm up that would've had even patient fans squirming in their seats by the time "Learning To Fly" would kick in to settle that urge for something high energy.
As soon as I read the video title I figured that it was going to be a Rick Wright connection. One of the music industries true gentlemen and one of the few whose passing brought me to tears. His solo album, Wet Dream, is quite wonderful and well worth people seeking out.

Every good thing has an end, for us Floydians, we know what has been done, and what once was. I am honored that I was at Pink Floyd's concert and to have the privilege to live at the same time as they did. Thank you to you for publishing this one, to Pink Floyd for the happiness, to each member of PF as human and of course, to the millions and millions of fans of the past, the present and those who will keep the legacy going in the future.
It's the part of the song where they go back and forth and look at each other. But we all know that in all of their other songs, that Rick conveyed the different feelings throughout. He can always go back On an island to catch up with Rick and play their song again.

Echos is probably one of Gilmore's greatest songs. I was always curious why he never played it again, now it makes sense looking back. Richard was definitely the foundation of that whole song.
Echoes is probably is the masterpiece that wasn't on Dark Side. But that's ok Meddle is also a Floyd classic. I respect the working relationship Gilmour had with Wright. I can related because I had a professional working relationship with someone like that. We worked together so long it was almost like we knew what each other were thinking. And we are still good friends to this day.
Nick Mason's band and their approach is a refreshing change from Gilmour & Waters. That said, I TOTALLY understand why Dave feels that he can no longer perform "Echoes." I miss Rick.

I saw Gilmour and Wright play Echoes in Chicago 18 years ago today. It remains my fondest live music experience and is likely never to be surpassed for me. In fact, I skipped Gilmour’s 2016 tour because I knew it wouldn’t be the same.
Richard Wright was the background soul of Pink Floyd.. There is one album where he is absent and we can feel the lack of music in that .. the final cut..
He still plays Syd's and Rick's compositions and has included recordings of Rick from the jam sessions on his new album, as well as The Endless River album, to ensure their legacies live on and to ensure their estates (family), still have an income from royalties. While I've seen Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets perform Echoes and I have to say they did it great, it just didn't have the same feel as either the Live in Pompey or Live at Gdansk recordings, with the latter being so much more emotional, especially the final minutes where they're talking to each other with their instruments for the last time, as if they knew and were saying goodbye.
its seems a shame to retire such a great song. I wonder if RW would like to deprive future generations the joy of hearing it live. Almost like locking away the paintings of a great master once they've passed. I understand DG sadness but let it ring out as celebration of the man that left us.
RICK AND DAVE'S VOICES TOGETHER ON THAT SONG, BEST SOUNDING VOCAL HARMONY IN HISTORY OF MUSIC. They should have used ricks voice more, it could have really beautified the wall and final cut.
I must say, for me, the Pompei recording of Echos is one of the purist, finest pieces of music I have ever had the pleasure to hear. Each time I listen it's like the first time all over again, it is an unexplainable mystery to me how this piece is so powerful each and every time. I guess that makes it better than sex!!!
You could not watch Pink Floyd without seeing the connection between them. David was always looking over to Rick. I can see why he doesn't want to do it. I should have expected it.
I loved David Gilmour and thought it odd as Lead Singer & Guitarist he stood on the side in the dark. When I saw him in '94 he was front & and centre. Richard's marital & drug issues, made him undependable & Waters fired him. Waters was a jerk, yet David didn't need Richard to sing Echoes, his voice and range was stronger. I lost respect for David when he & Ginger divorced & he abandoned his 4 kids who rarely saw him before & he made a lot of poor choices his fans didn't agree with. Like putting his 2nd family before his 1st.
He said the song was like a conversation between the two, and you can hear it when they go back and forth between guitar and organ improvs after the first two verses. In the "groovy" part that then fades off into the "dark realm" sounding bit.
The first time I heard / watched Echos was the Pompeii video. I was at the time, conveniently participating in a self-procured, self-managed, MDMA ingestion research exercise. It was quite the journey.
Back then Dave Gilmour's triangular, almost gaunt face. Today in 2024 we've all put weight on. He looks nothing like that now... and neither do we. The best Pink Floyd track? "Julia Dream". It's from 1970 and was the first song to have Gilmour singing. It's not on any album, it's a B-side. I heard it as a child and my god has it stuck with me.
Echoes has however continued to be played by Nick Mason's Saucerfull of Secrets and has often appeared in setlists by world renowned tribute band Brit Floyd. In both cases the overall melody is carried well. What cannot be replicated so easily is the combined vocal style of Rick & David. It is also interesting to note that the shortened 16 minute performance of Echoes on the 1987 Momentary Lapse of Reason tour was not included on the extras for the Delicate Sound of Thunder extras or Later Years Box set, suggesting perhaps that David felt it never really worked as a show opener. The song was droped in favour of Shine on you crazy diamond after just 10 shows,though there are a couple of soundboard recordings on You Tube and rehearsal video footage.

Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets played Echoes on his 2022 tour, which played Toronto. It sounded great!
I saw them do it live in Indianapolis, and it was truly mind-blowing, the highlight of an already awesome gig.
Nick & Saucer's version a lovely tribute. Wonderful really. BUT. You will never beat David & Richard @ Gdansk IMO.

Every good thing has an end, for us Floydians, we know what has been done, and what once was. I am honored that I was at Pink Floyd's concert and to have the privilege to live at the same time as they did. Thank you to you for publishing this one, to Pink Floyd for the happiness, to each member of PF as human and of course, to the millions and millions of fans of the past, the present and those who will keep the legacy going in the future.

It's the part of the song where they go back and forth and look at each other. But we all know that in all of their other songs, that Rick conveyed the different feelings throughout. He can always go back On an island to catch up with Rick and play their song again.
I feel the same Richard Wright and David Gilmore where always in one at all times. Rechard would wear a tercouis braclet. It took me years to find one. I found it two years ago and wear it daily. In menory of Richard. RIP Peace Out and Love MMLZZZ

From David fully understandable, with Echoes was a unit with Rick. Respect! Luckily Nick Mason still plays the song, recently I saw Echoes in Tivoli, love it so much.
Echos is probably one of Gilmore's greatest songs. I was always curious why he never played it again, now it makes sense looking back. Richard was definitely the foundation of that whole song.
Echoes is probably is the masterpiece that wasn't on Dark Side. But that's ok Meddle is also a Floyd classic. I respect the working relationship Gilmour had with Wright. I can related because I had a professional working relationship with someone like that. We worked together so long it was almost like we knew what each other were thinking. And we are still good friends to this day.
Got to see Wright and Gilmour do Echoes in LA 2006. So sad in retrospect. RIP Rick

Nick Mason's band and their approach is a refreshing change from Gilmour & Waters. That said, I TOTALLY understand why Dave feels that he can no longer perform "Echoes." I miss Rick.

I saw Gilmour and Wright play Echoes in Chicago 18 years ago today. It remains my fondest live music experience and is likely never to be surpassed for me. In fact, I skipped Gilmour’s 2016 tour because I knew it wouldn’t be the same.
Richard Wright was the background soul of Pink Floyd.. There is one album where he is absent and we can feel the lack of music in that .. the final cut..

David Gilmore has provided the music that is the soundtrack. To my life he is one of a kind
He still plays Syd's and Rick's compositions and has included recordings of Rick from the jam sessions on his new album, as well as The Endless River album, to ensure their legacies live on and to ensure their estates (family), still have an income from royalties.
While I've seen Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets perform Echoes and I have to say they did it great, it just didn't have the same feel as either the Live in Pompey or Live at Gdansk recordings, with the latter being so much more emotional, especially the final minutes where they're talking to each other with their instruments for the last time, as if they knew and were saying goodbye.
its seems a shame to retire such a great song. I wonder if RW would like to deprive future generations the joy of hearing it live. Almost like locking away the paintings of a great master once they've passed. I understand DG sadness but let it ring out as celebration of the man that left us.
RICK AND DAVE'S VOICES TOGETHER ON THAT SONG, BEST SOUNDING VOCAL HARMONY IN HISTORY OF MUSIC. They should have used ricks voice more, it could have really beautified the wall and final cut.
I must say, for me, the Pompei recording of Echos is one of the purist, finest pieces of music I have ever had the pleasure to hear. Each time I listen it's like the first time all over again, it is an unexplainable mystery to me how this piece is so powerful each and every time. I guess that makes it better than sex!!!
Two great musicians
You could not watch Pink Floyd without seeing the connection between them. David was always looking over to Rick. I can see why he doesn't want to do it. I should have expected it.
I loved David Gilmour and thought it odd as Lead Singer & Guitarist he stood on the side in the dark. When I saw him in '94 he was front & and centre. Richard's marital & drug issues, made him undependable & Waters fired him. Waters was a jerk, yet David didn't need Richard to sing Echoes, his voice and range was stronger. I lost respect for David when he & Ginger divorced & he abandoned his 4 kids who rarely saw him before & he made a lot of poor choices his fans didn't agree with. Like putting his 2nd family before his 1st.
Paraphrasing. Those without things they regret cast the first stone. Who are we to judge why marriages fail. You nothing about this.

At least we got Saucerful of Secrets to play it. A mighty fine version of it too I might add.
He said the song was like a conversation between the two, and you can hear it when they go back and forth between guitar and organ improvs after the first two verses. In the "groovy" part that then fades off into the "dark realm" sounding bit.
He did resurrect it acoustic on his solo show quite a while ago…
David is a class act. I’m grateful for whatever he gives me.

The first time I heard / watched Echos was the Pompeii video. I was at the time, conveniently participating in a self-procured, self-managed, MDMA ingestion research exercise.

He certainly played it right up till Rick's passing. There's many live versions.
Back then Dave Gilmour's triangular, almost gaunt face. Today in 2024 we've all put weight on. He looks nothing like that now... and neither do we. The best Pink Floyd track? "Julia Dream". It's from 1970 and was the first song to have Gilmour singing. It's not on any album, it's a B-side. I heard it as a child and my god has it stuck with me.
Echoes has however continued to be played by Nick Mason's Saucerfull of Secrets and has often appeared in setlists by world renowned tribute band Brit Floyd. In both cases the overall melody is carried well. What cannot be replicated so easily is the combined vocal style of Rick & David. It is also interesting to note that the shortened 16 minute performance of Echoes on the 1987 Momentary Lapse of Reason tour was not included on the extras for the Delicate Sound of Thunder extras or Later Years Box set, suggesting perhaps that David felt it never really worked as a show opener. The song was droped in favour of Shine on you crazy diamond after just 10 shows,though there are a couple of soundboard recordings on You Tube and rehearsal video footage.
