    Have i got some sort of deja vu? As you did a video of this working last year and sprayed oil on the paint to see the writing clearly.

    Having worked in electrical engineering for the most of my fifty year working life, I used multi-meters nearly every day.
    I can say that you are the only person that I have ever heard call the resistance range the 'horse shoe' range.

    I believe these dynamotors or rotary transformers were used in aircraft radio equipment before transistor inverters became available

    They radio dynamotors, or rotary transformers for old tube radios some are for the transmitter portion, and smaller one for the receiver. They step up the voltage for the tubes, or valves on airplanes, or boats. I have one that’s a bit of an odd ball it’s military, haven’t been able to find much on it, but just based of its size at out put for watts when you do ohms law it’s probably for the receiver portion to what ever radio it went to. They are fun interesting pieces of history, there essentially an early inverter though also know that there were different versions that were AC, or a kinda of dc output( really it pluses because of the switch commutator, which was herd in the radios.

    When I was a kid I bought one of these at an electronic second hand store, I had a 1/4 hp motor and an old car 1 2v generator along with a tripolet multi meter to do experiments priceless knowledge I'm lucky that I did not kill myself shocked many times that was around 1961 or 2

      I owned one when I was a school boy in the late 60th, a classmate found it on his father farm in a tool shed. It was used for a mobile radio transmitter of the german army (Wehrmacht) , it put out 1000V at 150mA from a 12V battery. I used it for electric fishing on a little lake near my place. And yes I was zapped , a very painful experience. Later it found a job for a homebrew CB power amp with valves. The german designation for such dynamotors are "Umformer"

    @14:56 - "In new money..." I swear that I just heard this term for the first time on a Time Team episode a few days ago. They compared a measurement using old/new money and I thought that was very interesting. It's equally odd to hear it here in Phil Hardings voice.

    Those machines are called "Rotary Converters" the part the brushes are in contact with are called "commutators". Way back they would be in all sizes up to hundreds of kilowatts. I have a 1920's book with pictures of them in very large sizes used in DC mains supplies. That rotary converter would have been on a mobile radio transmitter with the 240 volts on the intermediate valves and the 500 volts on the power output, the voltage would be correct only at the rated load so the bulb you have is not a big enough load to pull the voltage down to 250 volts. I would buy it from you, say £20..

    That is designed to provide power for a radio.
    Those generally date to WW2 and the most common ones are from aircraft radios, but they generally operate on 28 volts. That one being 12 volts is more likely a land vehicles radio supply.

    @10:50 - "Horseshoe mode" I worked with a chap who was actually my boss. He always said "Horseshoe Mode" and "u-mode" for microamps and such. He wasn't trying to be funny though, he was just a bell-end.

    Adam, that rotary convertor or transformer would have been used in a WW2 military vehicle for powering a receiver/transmitter, those voltages are I believe for a 19 set. DO NOT TOUCH THEM AS THEY COULD WELL MAKE YOU DEAD!

    Only to use with (military) radio-gear (using valves)
    Totally not fitted for regular bulbs as the current (miliamps) delivered at the High voltage side is WAY too low.
    Just good enough for LED (to test)
    It will probably deliver DC ... not AC.
    They are called "dynamotors" and were commonly used during WW2

      Yeah its DC only. What sort of draw would I need on that to make it work??

      @@NorfolkMancave I don't understand what you mean with "draw" ...
      Probably "current-draw".
      Those dynamotors normally produce 2 high voltages ... one (quite high) for the transmitter-tube ... mostly about 500VDC.
      And a lower "high-voltage" (about 270V) for the receiver part.
      I cant make-up what's on that copperplate, but it should mention a mA-value for all the voltages produced.
      Seems to me that this little dynamotor doesn't come from a very powerfull tranceiver.
      You can easily calculate the watts by multiplying voltage ratio with the given mA-ratio.
      For really "big" tranceivers the military used big(ger) motor-driven generators in the field.
      But could you use this for "other" purposes than tranceivers??? Not really ...
      I'd consider this as some kind of school-display to show how a dynamoter works.

    These things are cool af I wonder with a transformer if could be used as a kinda free energy device u know like a 240 to 12v transformer from the output too the input technically it should run constantly obs would have to have a switched 12v battery to get her goin then turn off once spooling also I wonder if u had a rheostat of soem sort on the input of u could control the voltage ie slow motor down a bit to get closer to 240
