    Being a belter Miller got weaker body that a healthy earther like Holden would have , i believe thats the reason why miller was affected by the radiation faster.

      Holden's also a lot younger and healthier than Miller, which helps him a little. As much as it can anyway, when you're force-fed a mega dose of radiation.

      And Holden being genetically manipulated. At the least, if the technology exists to splice 8 different person's DNA into 1 and the "parents" could afford it, they would have the good sense to remove recessive traits if possible if not enhance him.

      @@DeFrancoFollower Enhancement beyond current human norms, true, is specilation. But the implications of removing recessive traits, which is in itself an enhancement are all there. Splicing and dicing is there. The genome was mapped more than 150 years before Season 1 There must be a science based test to prove there that there is enough DNA from the 8. And to make James the crusader, they would not create a non-viable child (duh), or one who has to struggle with his own imperfections as well as the government.🤔

    Fun fact - Phoebe, where the Anubis got the Protomolecule from, is a real-life moon of Saturn. What makes it interesting is that it orbits the planet in the opposite direction from the rest of its moons, leading to the theory that it is an extrasolar capture.

    16:30 The title of ep. #1, Dulcinea, refers to Don Quixote's idealized lady fair, the woman he strives to be worthy of. Miller fell in love with Julie sight unseen, or with the idea of her. Now he finds himself being judged by her, and feeling her disapproval. It becomes a warning to his subconscious that he needs to do better to measure up to his Dulcinea.
    Why isn't Holden as poor off as Miller obviously is. Remember what the Ceres coroner told us. Life expectancy on Earth and Mars are more than double that in the Belt. Holden was constructed from his eight parents' DNA by the best geneticist available, probably with a lack of recessive traits, and he was raised in the best of all possible conditions. Miller started life with all the disadvantages his environment could heap upon him. Even before the killer dose of hard radiation, he was in distressed condition from the get-go.

    Frank DeGraff was from Earth and part of the same diplomatic corps that Crisjen and her father were part of. He was also the Ambassador TO Mars, and obviously very much in love with the planet and culture. He wanted to retire to Mars, which is why being banned from that after Crisjen's play was so devastating to him. But he still had connections to access the drive records of the ships that Crisjen found. Normally, drive schematics aren't significant, but when you find that they're installed on a secret fleet of stealth ships....

    It's not an integral part of the plot, but those "pencils"/data storage devices are yet another example of the attention to detail you get with The Expanse. Everything in this future has gone digital--that's hinted at when Avasarala comments on Holden's mother's collection of real books, and shown by the ubiquitous presence of handheld digital terminals. So it stands to reason that the kind of overpriced, kitschy data drives a top politician with a romantic streak would use would be modeled on an archaic device like a wooden pencil.

    • @kirkdarling4120
      @kirkdarling4120 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Amos (aka murder snuggles) is a wonderful character. He is generally pretty cold as a person, but has a soft spot for children. I know you'll enjoy the slow burn of learning about why he is the person he is.

  • @Icypenguigo
    @Icypenguigo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    Holden and Miller's interactions are interesting because they have diametrically opposed philosophies. Holden is an idealist, Miller is a nihilist. Holden would like all the perpetrators of Eros to stand trial and be brought to justice. Miller's ok with casually murdering them because he thinks the universe is a better place without them in it. It's a set of differences they'll never really be able to reconcile, although they do rub off on each other a bit in certain ways.
    And the saga of Eros is far from over. The events that transpire in this episode are going to have profound and far-reaching consequences. And the so-called bio-weapon? It's existentially terrifying in ways that none of the main characters have realized yet.
    Amos is an utterly fantastic character, and easy on the eyes to boot! And I say that as a straight dude! LOL. Holden has a line in one of the books where he compares Amos to a pit bull: He can be extremely dangerous when he wants to be, but he's loyal to a fault and you just wanna hug him. All the characters in this show evolve and develop in interesting ways, but Amos has perhaps the most complex and challenging backstory of any of them, which you will learn about in detail eventually(plus the show drops lots of little hints towards it along the way). I think it's safe to say that Amos is one of the biggest fan-favorite characters.
    Looking forward to seeing your reaction to the next episode. It will be introducing another new main-ish character, and one of my absolute favorites as well. On to season 2!

I would like to warn you a bit. Some episodes will have you in tears. Have some tissue near by. When this show pull at your heart strings, they pull really hard.

  • @jebus7679
    @jebus7679 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Miller really does have a way of growing on you. It's easy to dislike Miller as just an asshole until you get to know him and realize that he's an asshole with his own code that he lives by. Even if you don't always agree with his code, there's still something admirable about that. I mean, he's dying of radiation poisoning and has finally made his way clear, found his only path that could lead to a possibility of survival, but he just can't go without settling things up for Havelock.
    This show has so many characters with their own stories weaving in and out of the grand tapestry, that it only makes sense to have longer intros than outros. There's just so much to digest and process that it all needs time to sift through and it's really hard to do fresh out of the episode.

  • @jamesholland5761

    Wow! I knew I was going to enjoy your journey in this masterpiece but you really are hooked! Welcome to the family Beratna! Fellow Screaming Firehawk! And to think, it only gets better!
    Other commenters already pointed out why Miller was effected sooner than Holden. There are many layers to each characters being explored in this story. I could explore each one in this episode but it would take hours! Holden's morality is tested here and watching Miller is very hard for him but there is an admiration to it!
    Amos- aka murder snuggles! I'm a straight male but I love this guy!! He's my Dude! As another reactor has expressed!
    Chrisjen is our Queen! Period!
    So looking forward to season two!

  • @Thyrwyn
    @Thyrwyn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I will never be able to say enough about the writing on this show. The characters - all of the characters (not just the principals) are all driven by their natures: they aren't just cogs fulfilling a role, or serving the plot. That's not to say that they don't drive the plot - because they do - but the plot seems to emerge from who they are, rather than the other way around.
    (And yes, I know that that is not how writing works. But good writing makes us believe that whatever choices characters make, any other choice would have been 'out of character'. )
    Amos and Chrisjen only get better.

    People have compared The Expanse to Game of Thrones for the political intrigue and multiple POV characters spread around. To further the analogy, the Protomolecule could be likened to the White Walkers in the early days. A fantastical, unknown other in an otherwise grounded setting which we initially only glimpse in the first episode.

  • @reverance_pavane
    @reverance_pavane 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    One of the peculiarities of radiation exposure is that one of the initial symptoms of exposure is that you feel pretty good. Probably because your microbiota is generally pretty much cactus. But then the nausea, weakness, and bleeding hits as your cells, particularly skin cells, starts dying. And then you get the pain, seizures, and effects of serious nerve and organ damage. You can still potentially survive an otherwise "fatal" dose with medical attention, although you will be extremely debilitated and essentially relying on life support to keep you alive. Although in this case it was a close thing; "hospice" mode is, I suspect, purely palliative (as in a setting to make the patient's death relatively painless).
    [And this ignores long-term effects such as cancers. The lowered modern radiation limits are due to the fact that the stochastic effects of even light radiation exposure were much more severe than most people originally imagined.]

    The simple fact that reactors feel it necessary to expound on details of what they've watched and make predictions for future episodes, really shows why this series is so amazing. Instead of dumbing down for audiences and constantly using endless exposition, the creators chose to trust the audience and concentrate on suspense, intrigue, and plot twists that when fully explained much later it just creates that WOW factor for Sci Fi lovers. Or really anyone that loves good story telling.

    Seems like your reaction to Holden & Miller's conditions was especially powerful because of your personal professional experience working with radiation and your awareness of its effects. Cool to see. Thankfully, (as you've seen by now, given that your Patreon is apparently a couple weeks ahead), they have really advanced medicine in this future... yay!

    Sweet reaction! Can't wait for you doing season 2 and also meet 2 new characters (one of which is probably my favourite in the show)!
    Why does Holden know they were hit with a deadly dose of radiation? Because his hand terminal warned him about that. Those things have built in detectors for stuff like that for savety reasons. You can see the red radiation hazard symbol flashing on his screen when it happens. I guess he didn't react faster because he was still in disbelieve about what he was witnessing.

    Great insight as always. Hugs for the fear of losing Miller. I felt the same way. Just a heads up about the Ty and That Guy podcast: There are a couple of unintentional Season 5 spoilers in the early episodes of the podcast, so maybe hold off on watching it until your second watch of The Expanse. Yes, you know you're going to rewatch, and watch episode by episode in tandem with the podcast. Enjoy!

    The stairwell isn't as scary as it looks. Eros has 0.3 g centrifugal accelaration at it's surface. The closer to the axis of rotation you go, the lower it gets but even at the edge 0.3 is very manageable. You could propably just catch the ladder again if you slip and holding on does take a third of the effort it does on earth.

    For the radiation exposure, your profession likely puts you as closer to expert, but the x-rays are relatively focused, only open long enough for the film exposure, where your exposure will be the little bit that bounces around the room before losing energy. In the show, the radiation dose is framed as a focused dose of a high level of what's likely gamma radiation (based on the radiation being contained in a room with thick walls).
    So, it is definitely plausible for a brief exposure to the wrong type of radiation to be deadly.

    When you get through the series, the actor who plays Amos has a podcast with one of the writers of the books. I think I'll wait to tell you the name of it until after a certain point in the show because the title is not really spoiler-y but kinda maybe is? Anyway, I think you would enjoy it. They go over each episode and also talk film and life and sometimes have the other actors on as guests.

    The reason that Miller got sick faster is because his immune system and overall health was a lot worse. It was stated in a earlier episode that he was an orphan on the station and had gotten inferior/expired immune /growth supplementation shots. That’s also the cause of the messed up spine protuberance on his neck.

    You couldn't have a better friend than Amos. At the same time he'd also be the last person you'd ever want against you.
    If Holden told me he was pissed with me I'd say"Ok mate". If Amos said that most people wouldn't even see the "me-shaped' blur as I flew past them, and like Forrest I wouldn't stop running for years.

    The machine keeps trying to switch to Hospice -- Means that AI of the medical bay computer is considering Miller and Holden "terminal care patients" and tries to switch to "pain management until they die" instead of trying to treat the radiation poisoning. It thinks they can't be saved. Meanwhile Amos keeps having to set it back to "triage and treat" so it will assess the problem and treat the problem.
    Holden is Earth born, while Miller is Belt born. The difference in gravity and environment would likely account for Holden's denser tissue mass, and possibly better general health, thus increased tolerance for the same exposure to radiation, hence tot showing symptoms as soon, and being in overall better condition upon reaching the ship than Miller.

    There's a reason why they don't take out (some) dead people's names from the opening credits.
    Seeing as you're already in Season 2, I'm sure you've seen why this is.
