When Drummer was doing her inverted crunches, the plan was to use a cable to give Cara Gee an assist. Gee declined and did them unassisted. Respect for Ms. Gee.
Everyone, goes on about Stephanie Beatriz as Rosa from Brooklyn 99. And her real voice. But Cara Gee.... just a bubbly, cute human, with the most happy voice. But genuinely intimidating and some what terrifying as Drummer..... Now to learn this, doesn't surprise me at all...
@@chrism7395 Amos would likely lose, Mando is a well trained assassin and very well equipped. I would however give a W to Bobbie with the armor, mainly because she is also very well trained and using a suit that often matches or exceeds mandos equipments capabilities.
@@ill3260 I don't think her armor can handle blasters, let alone the Dark Saber or Whistling Birds. Plus Mando has full flight capabilities, Bobby just has lift thrusters. Mando would win for sure. Her only real advantage would be using bullets since they could theoretically penetrate between the armor. But realistically Mando has faced tougher enemies than her power suit, and the SW universe in general is vastly more dangerous, making Mando much more prepared in general.
@@StopReadingMyNameOrElse I would argue that it could withstand whistling birds since those should realistically have pretty limited penetration power, material density only goes so far at the low speeds they fly at. You're right about blasters and the flight capability, at least in gravity. The main reasons I would give the win to Bobbie despite both sides being vulnerable to each other is the advantages offered by the advanced ai control system, weaponry, and sensor array, there is no way for Mando to approach her without being spotted and engaged first. Being engaged first is decisive here, Mandos chances against long range guided munitions that her suit carries are pretty non-existent. Its a fight of physics constrained very advanced power armor vs non physics constrained but comparably low tech equipment, none of Mandos gear abuses the space magic aspects of star wars enough to matter here.
Pinus Contorta, the Lodgepole Pine, doesn't have to "die by fire", that some poetic license that's kinda out of character for Prax. It DOES require regular forest fires to propagate, because their pine cones have a resin keeping them closed that requires heat to open. Basically a fire comes through and clears enough space for the saplings to grow, and new nutrients for the soil,, and opens up the pinecones
My read on Amos’ reaction to Naomi taking him down is that as he has effectively outsourced his conscience and decision making to Naomi (and latterly Holden), he automatically assumes he is in the wrong if his instincts go against their choices. There is a moment in the attack of the ring station that I think is important in his development, when Naomi tells him not to go and fix a thruster and he instead chooses to follow Holden’s order. It’s the first time I can recall him going against Naomi, and I think the first time he clearly shows trust in Holden. I think it’s also the start of him beginning to make decisions on his own. Learning about Naomi’s choice with the protomolecule is another upset for that previously comfortable worldview.
I know as the audience were meant to be sympathetic to a character's choices, especially when they're well ground out human characters like on the expanse here, I mean we all make mistakes, we're all human. But her choice was REALLY fucked, and it has the worst possible fallout.
SYFY cancelled The Expanse because they signed a bad deal with Alcon Entertainment, the rights holder and actual production company. The authors sold their adaption rights (or a share of the rights) to Alcon. Before the show was produced, there was a bit of a bidding war for the rights to broadcast the show between, among others, SYFY and Amazon (Jeff Bezos was personally interested because he’s a big fan of the books). SYFY was desperate for a live action space show in 2014. Around 2009-10, when BSG ended and Stargate Universe was cancelled, SYFY new executives decided to focus on non-scripted shows that had higher margins due to their lower costs. This strategy wasn’t successful and they decided to go back into scripted science fiction programing. Unfortunately, they were so desperate to outbid Amazon that they signed an economically infeasible deal. SYFY agreed fund the show’s production (which was actually done by Alcon) in-exchange only the show’s “first-run linear rights” (i.e., SYFY only kept the proceeds from actually airing on SYFY). Alcon was free to sell the show’s streaming rights to others, which they sold to Amazon (in North America) and Netflix (globally). As I’m sure you’re aware, these days, there’s not a ton of money in “first-run linear rights, especially on a basic cable network like SYFY, with most viewers watch months or years later on streaming. The show was just too expensive for SYFY to produce for such a small piece of the pie. The show was profitable, just not for SYFY. So SYFY cancelled it. Given the deal, it’s understandable why SYFY had to cancel it and I certainly don’t hold it against them. The Expanse also wasn’t cancelled for very long. SYFY announced the show’s cancellation on May 11, 2018 (between the release of s3, e5 & e6) and Amazon announced its pick up of the show just 2 weeks later, on May 25th (between the release of s3, e7 & e8). If you haven’t watched it, find the clip of Jeff Bezos personally announcing the show’s pickup by Amazon at a National Space Society banquet he was a presenter at that was also attended by a number of the cast, crew and producers. Apparently Amazon cancelled the show after season 6 due to budget disputes. Amazon wanted to keep the budget as is, but Alcon said that the greater spectacle in books 6-9 required a higher budget. Alcon failed to convince Amazon to raise the budget and Amazon cancelled the show, but not before Alcon agreed to produce the 6th season with a similar budget by shortening the season from 10 to 6 episodes (thus increasing the amount available on a per episode basis). Alcon, the authors, cast and crew have been coy about a 7th season or otherwise continuing the show, notably choosing to only adapt book 6 in season 6 rather than trying to wrap up the entire story and never calling it a cancellation, just a “pause”. It’s heavily rumored that Alcon already has a deal in place (or plans for a deal) to continue the show (or do a sequel series) after Amazon’s rights expire in a year or two, but that it can’t be announced until the rights expire.
It's partly not (all) their fault (SYFY), Back then when they were signing the show for the first season, nobody could have predicted that streaming would blow up as big as it eventually did as the primary platform for millennials ( the key advertising demographic) in how they chose to consume content. In the 4 or 5 years between when they signed onto the show and when they cancelled it, streaming went from being a sort of gimmicky trend that only some yuppies were into, to being THE primary way of disseminating entertainment and infotainment that all the big players and broadcasters would eventually be forced to get into or get left behind. And just a slight small little addendum to why Amazon apparently passed on signing on immediately to a Season 7 (at a higher budget) Three words ; Rings of Power. They knew they were going all in on the show (to the tune of an over $1 billion production budget making it the most expensive show ever produced for TV), and that meant they had to cut their losses elsewhere or at least not increase spending in other show. And you can't blame them for that decision either. It averages 20-25 million viewers per episode. The Expanse simply can't match numbers like that even with a production budget that's a fraction of that one. I have my fingers crossed that the deal that Alcon have is with Apple+. Those guys really know how to spend on a sci-fi show (Looking at The Foundation series. No expenses spared)
Thank you for the information on that, very interesting that Amazon would grab the show that fast then choose to not up the budget for the last books to be filmed... Especially with a fan of the series at the helm, with that kind of money behind them...
Agree that SYFY got a bad deal. However, I prefer to think the authors (or/and Alcon) were smart with their deal with SYFY given the network has a bad history of canceling good shows and keeping the rights. (i.e. Farscape.) There was a good chance The Expanse could have still been canceled even without the deal it got.
EXCELLENT account of the events, and CBricklyne covered the one gap in the report, re: the timing of the paradigm shift in viewer habits. Good job, both of you!
though his reputation is now marred, there's a great interview with Cas Anvar on how he orchestrated that meeting with Bezos and what transpired in the banquet.
I’m glad to finally see someone else have the same reaction I did when the Rocinante name and emblem were scrapped! To me that was a real gut punch to kick off the season that drove home how much Naomi’s betrayal changed the ship and crew’s dynamics.
I love how excited you are about this. I don't tend to be super emotive about a lot of things, but your reaction epitomizes my feelings about The Expanse. You won't even have to suffer through the frustration of it being canceled, only to be rescued by Amazon. Please don't stop yammering on in the beginnings of these videos!
Alex is a typical career sailor. He sent the message to end any chance they were going to wait for him. It's his way of giving them permission to move on.
I love the opening sequence here where you get little snippets of how people across the system are reacting to the protomolecule. Excellent world building.
Man I love this episode. The Secretary General did actually formally declare war. It was on the alert Naomi told everyone to check. One of those one line, two second info drops that is easy to miss on the first watch. I had a picture in my head of the Razorback from reading the books, and it was badass and beautiful, but the Expanse creative departments way surpassed my expectations and imagination. I think I might have squealed out loud when I saw it in this episode. Fun fact (as far as I can remember from a podcast or after-show show). The cast and crew were lining up to get a turn on those rotating seats; they were that cool. And I know, it might be the Pinus Contorta now. I guess if I were MCRN, it might still be the Tachi, but in the back of my head and in my heart, it'll always be the Roci. #ScreamingFirehawks. Man, as much as I love this show, I might love watching you and others get to really, really appreciate, and fall in love with it for the first time, even more. Thanks and see you Thursday.
Yeah it's funny, reading the books my mind just made the Razorback look like the Swordfish II from Bebop mixed with an X-wing. And then the show came out and I was like "oh, yeah, obviously that's what the Razorback should look like." Though they do mention in the book that it has both A: not enough room for more than 2 people comfortably and B: some basic living amenities for longer duration events. So I pictured the interior a bit like a mini camper trailer mixed with the back galley of a 737, with a cockpit that is more-or-less Millennium Falcon. I suppose the Razorback in the show might have a little space down below the seats for a lav and such, but they certainly don't show it.
This was one of my favorite episodes. I'm glad you mentioned people not spoiling things. Sometimes I think people sometimes get overzealous and start foreshadowing things without realizing the implications to your first time watching.
Prax _is_ great! There are other good people in the show, but I think he's the only one who is genuinely _nice._ (Alex comes close, but that message to his family may have disqualified him.) We could all use more people like Prax in our lives. "Maybe you should try tea." 😆
In all these types of shows, and even many more "down to Earth" shows, it always amazes me as to the depth of caring that I manage to develop for a ship. Yet when shows are as well written as these are, those ships not only become true characters, but ones that lodge deep in my heart. Renaming the Roci gutted me when I first saw this.
OMG! Dear Screaming Firehawk here we are!! Season three! One the best damn seasons in all of tv history! Like you said... how in the hell did this show get canceled?!? Fantastic reaction! It's understandable that the Rocinante crew would be upset with Naomi because she lied to them! Amos saying she isn't the person he thought she was! And by the way... she will ALWAYS BE THE ROCINANTE in my book!! Amos definitely looks to Holden to follow at this time!! Holden making good on a promise to Prax finding his daughter! About Prax.... we all love him dearly! At this time I will hound you to pay special attention to the dynamic between Amos and Prax! It's means a lot..... to me! Team ABC and their adventures are something special! Now we got Chrisjen and Bobbie on the RazorBack!! Erinwright.... love to hate his character! Hitch your tits! Time to peel the paint! Season three is underway!
Alex Kamal doesn't want to be a captain. He wants to be a pilot and was finally able to be honest with his family about this. He's also been the "glue" that holds the Rocinante family together (that is what the lasagna is about).
When the Arboghast is disassembled it reminded me so much of the "exploded drawings" you used to be able to find of engines and other mechanically complex items to explain what all of the pieces were for and did.
Yes, I love Prax too... The interpersonal relationships are _gold_ in this series. This grouping was often called "ABC" (Avarsarala, Bobby, Cotyar) And yes, this whole series is A-MAZ-NG!! Probably my favourite scifi property ever (yes, beating out star wars, babylon5, and battlestar)
@@funnylilgalreacts It should be a priority for you. The first season is a bit cheesy. Then the show really takes off. Has a great cast, and great guest stars (for example: Walter Koenig in his best role). It’s one of the first scifi shows to really take continuity seriously, with an ongoing, multi-season story that unfolds over the course of the series with several interweaving threads. Before you watch it you’ll want to look up the correct viewing order. There were a number of made for TV films that were shown at various points, including the pilot movie, and while not all of them are super relevant to the overall plot, some are absolutely vital to watch at the correct times. And arguably one or two episodes might be best viewed out of broadcast order, too. Although the network didn’t screw things up as badly with B5 as they did with the spin-off series Crusade (which is incomprehensible in broadcast order).
@@funnylilgalreacts Babylon 5 is now my second-favorite show, because The Expanse knocked it off the top spot. The problem with Babylon 5 is that the overall story is amazeballs, but the small-scale day-to-day stuff is often cheesy and sometimes downright cringey. The special effects were ground-breaking for the day, being all CGI, but they are very aged now, and they look out of place because while the live action was filmed in 16:9 HD, the special effects were created in 4:3 NTSC due to technical limitations. It's jarring in HD remasters of the show. I have always dreamt of a show that would combine the excellent overall plotting of Babylon 5 with the excellent small-scale execution that the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica had, and that's basically The Expanse. With that said, Babylon 5 is absolutely worth watching, and try to avoid any and all spoilers. And just like The Expanse, almost every single little detail matters. The showrunner really took setup and payoff seriously, and I think The Expanse is a spiritual follower in that sense. I don't know, but I would bet that the showrunners of The Expanse are big Babylon 5 fans.
Bobbie's armor is very much in line with the old Heinlein story, "Starship Troopers" (the movie is VERY different). That books was probably the first example of "power armor" in science fiction.
3:40 *Pushes up glasses and assumes nasal nerd voice:* It's very difficult to set of a nuke intentionally, it's basically impossible to set off by accident. Intuition about chemical explosives doesn't translate well to nuclear devices. Nuclear material is made of atoms that emit radiation. Sometimes the radiation hits other atoms, which causes those atoms to break. When an atom breaks, it releases even more radiation. As you crush the nuclear material closer together, the chance of radiation hitting other atoms goes up. If you crush the material enough, the chance gets so high that it causes a chain reaction. To make that happen, you have to exert a very strong "push", evenly from all directions, at precisely the same time. Nukes are engineered so that the nuclear material is surrounded by very precisely timed and positioned explosives. If the timing or the position of the explosives are off by even a little bit, the material gets pushed instead of crushed, and there's no chain reaction. Things like the extreme heat from a rocket engine, smacking it with a hammer, exploding things next to it, won't crush the material anywhere close to enough to cause it to explode. Sorry for being that guy, but since this is an Expanse reaction, I figured I could get away with it :p
The backpack is one of my favorite things in the whole show, an Easter egg of a scene from the book, its a shared moment between Miller and Holden while dying on Eros both of them had watched it in their childhood. My personal fan theory is that the Misko and Marisko isn't current or relevant in the Expanse, but this is Prax sharing something from when he also grew up with his daughter Mei.
Lytrics to opening song, sung in Norweigan by Lisbeth Scott: I de sa morgenen jeg (In the so tender morning I) Stige asoke (rise in search) Ja lyn tid jeg vet ha delt (yes it's lightning time I know I share) Skulder dett be na more (shouldering this I ask now for darkness)
I never even heard about the show until I found the first three seasons in a bargain bin at the DVD store. Forget what I paid for it, but it would have been cheap at twice the price.
I’m loving the rewatch of The Expanse with you, Angela. I binged way too fast and finished all available seasons and am suffering because nothing is a compelling as The Expanse. Andor is surprisingly good and more people should be watching, but nothing compares to the raw craving of watching “just one more” episode of The Expanse.
A lot of people will say this is the best season, but I personally think each season is better than the previous one. This is just a really good show throughout, and ends very well too. It does end before the books do, but it feels like a solid, satisfying ending to the show. So there's nothing to worry about as you go through this. Just enjoy the ride. Some of the best television ever produced.
A little more elaboration: Many P. Contorta populations of the Rocky Mountain subspecies, the cones are closed and must be exposed to high temperatures, such as from forest fires, in order to open and release their seeds.
Whoo! Season 3! Let's rock! Everything is so good this episode. Just throwing you into it. You're one of the few reactors I've seen that noticed the Razorback and Julie. She's an amazing design. If you can find them, you may want to find the Hero Collector models of the Rocinante and Razorback. They're pretty fun to have on a shelf. Team ABC is great and that parting of ways for Chrisjen and Cotyar is bittersweet. The Pinus Contorta name isn't too bad, but yeah, no Rocinante.
The Nauvoo was supposed to knock Eros into the sun, when it missed, it continued towards the inner system, most likely slingshot around the sun and on its way out..
Yeah, I was surprisingly emotional when Holden airbrushed out the Roci's logo too :( Interesting point you made re Chrisjen in an unprecedented situation of complete helplessness, had never considered that before and you're right, it did make her more interesting, more human. Character development done right.
Wooo season three begins!!! This is probably my favorite season of one of the greatest series ever. Pretty much every episode of this season is intense with amazing moments everywhere. Can't wait to relive them vicariously through you! Just a quick note about nukes: nope getting burned up by the extreme heat of the Roci's engine blast wouldn't really be likely set off a nuke weapon. The triggering mechanisms for nuclear weapons is actually a fairly precise science, not really something that can just easily happen "by accident". Which makes sense, those are not the kind of things you would want going off under easy accident circumstances ;) Sure they can get damaged and make a big radiation hazard mess, but they are not likely to go "BOOM".
34:39 Contorta is a really decent name. Each of the characters burned their own forest down to the ground, so to speak, and a new one is planted. Each of the characters has burned away their old selves and they have grown, a little bit. James and Prax have. Alex has come to realize he can't do it all. I don't think his wife and kid will be appreciative of his growth. Amos has not, he has switched to a new "parent". Naomi, I will say has not. Yet. And, well, Phoenix would have been too cliche'.
Regarding Fred Johnson keeping Earth's nukes and wanting the protomolecule: I think he truly embodies the "si vis pacem, para bellum" philosophy. I think he honestly wants deterrent to avoid being crushed by Earth and/or Mars, and that he is not planning on using those weapons offensively. But it is still very dangerous that Naomi gave him the protomolecule. He already had a mutiny on Tycho because other factions wanted the nukes, and it was by sheer luck that he made it through that.
You said "Razorcrest" instead of "Razorback," and Xander gave us the Mandalorian theme. I think I've told you that "Praxidike" is the Greek goddess of retribution. In the last seconds of the last episode, they showed us that Strickland and Mei were on Io. Astronomy geeks saw it immediately. Alex always votes to save a child. It will always be a crime that this show was never recognized for any television industry awards.
Great reaction. Yes they can change the ship’s transponder Name back to Rocinante or anything. Fred Johnson wants the Nauvoo to be the mothership or flagship of the OPA. Anyone tell you Danica Patrick looks like you? ❤
In the book (yes, I liked the series so much I've started in on the books) Kotyar smuggled the armor right into Avasarala's suite in a crate marked "dress clothes," which while sneakier and more James Bond isn't nearly so cool or suspenseful as the television adaptation made it.
How great was some of those comments about character and possible future story in the opening in regard to what is actually to come?? Obviously not going to get specific as to what part but everyone who has seen the show was probably smiling big, excited to watch the reaction when she gets to the relevant part of the story. 🙂
Yep, this is one of our favorite episodes. This season is going to rock your world. So happey to be in Season 3 Best quote: "Hitch your tits and pucker up, it's time to peel the paint!" said by Bobbie Draper to Chrysjen Avasarala when she was about to take off with the Razorback. Sadavir Errinwright is such a snake. When you were getting cozy and thinking he had turned over a new leaf...we knew of this betrayal. Ugh. Not a fan. Wonderfully played by the character, especially that cat...landing on his feet, again. But man did he throw Avasarala under the bus. Not a fan...for sure. The idea of Fred Johnson working with Anderson Dawes. Not a fan of this. Hasn't he realized that Dawes is a "true believer" and Fred is ALWAYS going to be an Earther with complex (ally for the Belt). He is blinded by his desire to do good, but Dawes doesn't have that flaw...he is like Saw Gerrera from Star Wars...willing to do ANYTHING (lie, kill, steal) for the cause. Nothing to lose. We believe Fred is a good man (underneath that bravado, but his ego is getting in the way, for he cannot see...that he might be irrelevant in a short period of time. His ONE move...is that he DOES have the biggest ship that was ever made...so he's going to play that card. Interesting where this will go from herre. Seeing the dynamic crumbling on the Rocci is hard to watch. It is like watching your two best friends arguing (and NOW they are getting personal...might not be able to recover from THIS arguement), what side are you going to find yourself on? Amos is trying to make good decisons by himself. You see him really trying. This is really not something that he is made for. His normal modus operandi is to cling to someone he trusts and back their reasoning (knowing that his has been compromised by his life experiences). In this episode he makes two diametrically different decsions. One to go to Tycho and then one to go find Mei. He backed Naomi on the first, but also in this episode...he no longer feels that Naomi is the person that he can trust, but after hearing Holden's reasononing, he backs him. We all love Prax. He really is part of the crew. He got to name the ship. There was a LOT of online chatter joking about the actual name of the ship. You have to see it written out...and have sort of a dirty mind...to get the joke. It's funny (at least Marie and I thought it was). You know Holden is NOT in a good place...when he smashes the coffee machine. And that line that Prax says...that he should drink tea WAS hilarious. Prax is a good person. He's the "normal" dude, caught in this ever complex world of people fighting over turf. Innocent bystandards. BUT, aren't they all...really? And, you are right...Holden deciding to go find Mei was not out of emotion, but took what Prax was talking about...him (Holden tilting at windmills) to heart, and wanted to do ONE right thing...especially since THEY already said that they would do it...at the beginning. He is becoming a GOOD leader. Way to go, Holden. The thought of seeing this crew dispersing really hurts. They've become our family. Ugh. The visuals that we see with the three amigos on Jules Pierre Mao's ship. Love the nerdy guy. Love the banter between Cotyar and Avasarala. They really do have a great, but tenious relationship. Also, the bond that Cotyar (spy) and Draper (soldier) have with each other. Mutual respect for what they both can/will do for Avasarala. Keeping her safe...is NOW mission number one. The thought of this team splitting up is distressful, too. This is the war that Bobbie has been dreaming of, and now she finds herself shunned by her own people, and ALSO protecting Avasarala (a leader of Earth). Man has the solar system been flipped on its head. Errinwright believes that JPM has killed Avasarala. His ego is so big, that he's blinded by his own shemes. He really cannot comprehend that this woman is a TRUE fighter. Bobbie keeping Thea alive is very Tolkien-esque. That same discussion happened with Gandalf and Frodo...about Golum. By keeping him alive, actually saved their lives...and possibly found a way that Avasarala can counter Errinwright. Yes, in this episode...Theo was one fo the heroes. About the relationship that Bobbie has with Avasarala...they each have to "stay in their lane". Each of them are badass women, but they also have strengths and weaknesses. When they are in their strength, the other one should shut up and listen...and vice versa. They are BOTH incredibly capable women, but in their chosen fields. They really do work well together, though...and there are wonderfully great lines that are said back and forth. Hilarious. Ah, the Protomolecule is "out there". We think that Avasarla has already seized all Protegen assets in a previous episode (before going to JPM's ship), we heard about Mao's children, especially his other daughter. We think that their name is mud at the moment...already. Now that Avasarala isn't there...and what Errinwright might have done in her absence...that is another thing. Drummer is a true badass. We love her accent. Camila Drummer is a Belter's belter. Through and through. AND, yes...getting in bed with Dawes was the worst thing that Fred could've told Drummer. She does NOT trust Dawes at all. Working adjacently with Dawes is TOO close. In retrofitting the Navoo...they'd have to bring it back to Tycho. He knows he wants someone on the Navoo...that he can trust...and he know Drummer. She's pissed at him, but she's been pissed at Fred many times...but he just leaves her alone...for a while, and then she comes back...eventually and they can work together, again. He STILL trusts her. Now, whether she CONTINUES to trust him...WAFO (watch and find out). About Alex, yes...least developed character...up to this point. We know that he's found his true love (piloting the Rocci...and being with like minded people who trust him...to do his job). About whether he should've sent that message...well, he's been absent for SO long...and sometimes it is better to know it's over, than to have lingering thoughts about a "possible" future. At least, that is the way we took it. So many plotlines...and they are all being revealed in such a satisfying way. Again, thank you for being so kind to us.
@@cluster_f1575 ...and no one person can pinpoint the BEST...for each of us get something different from EVERY one they've made. We can have our favourites, the ones with the coolest quotes, the epic moments with our favourites (or most hated characters), but it seems SO personal for each and every one of us. Also, the fandom is SO diverse, that each character, episode, arc, and season...means so many different things to all of us. One of the greatest fandoms in TV. Love the Screaming Firehawks.
Wow!!! I feel like I just read the Bible!!! Anyway I glad I did because I always thought Bobby said, "time to feel the pain!" Not peal the paint. So thanks for that. It's a way better line.
I love the Roci, but my favorite ship in the series is the Razorback. It's built for one thing and one thing only. Speed. It's basically just an epstein drive with a cockpit strapped on top, and it's beautiful. The elongated three pronged hull also makes sense, as it provides the ideal mounting points for the maneuvering RCS thrusters in spots that provide maximum leverage for twisting and turning the ship in any direction needed.
NO SPOILERS; the protomolecule does work on a set of logic and reasons, they're just not as yet understood. One of the hardest things to do as a sci-fi writer is to both conceive and express a truly alien alien. Not just a human in an alien skin. Something that doesn't have the same motivations, thought processes, responses and/or reasons for what it does. For it to have an internal logic and consistency that is literally alien from us. The Expanse does this very well as you will eventually find out.
Wooo Hooo!!!! My favorite season. Don't sweat the name change. Think of it as an alias. After Eros and Ganymede the Roci is pretty well known. Also how many shows do you find with 4 really strong female characters in it?
The ABC relationship (Avarsarela, Bobbie, and Cotyar) is very familial with Avarsarela very much the matriarch and Bobbie and Cotyar acting as adult children responding to the matriarch.
I started watching The Expanse during season 2 and after it ended, I picked up the books. I hadn't really read fiction in years due to other hobbies, but I couldn't wait for season 3.
So weird hearing you talk about Amos as I’ve just listened to the Audiobook The Churn. And so glad you’re in season 3. Which I watched for the billionth time recently and currently enjoying season 4 right now And as a doctor, I’ll reiterate Chrisjen’s advice “Don’t forget your antibiotics” 😢 PS. 26:57 my favourite track by Clinton Shorter “what I really wanted”. It gets played a few times in S3. Heck there’s a moment in Book 8 when I imagined it play. They don’t play it enough
I did have to wait for the third series! And while it was maddening, the pain was eased by the fact I had at that point read the books up to Persepolis Rising and I had a good idea where the series was going (in fact, Persepolis Rising isn't on TV... Yet... Fingers crossed)
There’s some missing context regarding Alex and Mars that the show never goes into. There’s an Expanse graphic novel that goes into each character’s back story a little bit if you’re interested. Basically Mars government puts a lot of pressure on families to marry and procreate so that Mars can increase its power via population growth. Most people buy into this because Mars is a very nationalistic society. You have to wonder how many men and women on Mars were pressured into that life when it didn’t really suit them. You can read more in the graphic novel or the books after you finish the show.
It is extremely difficult to create a fission/fusion process. If the geometry of the implosion device is off at all, the most that happens is a conventional explosion. Very low risk of a nuke accidentally going off, even if bbqed by the Roci's engine.
Regarding Fred wanting the protomolecule and why, I'd note that the only nation so far to give up nuclear weapons is Ukraine. Deterrence is a siren song. Weapons of deterrence don't always work out the way people think. And especially in this case because the protomolecule is largely unknown. But people knowing what the Belt has now might change their behaviour. For good, for bad or at all - regardless, Fred made a bet. Oh, and the theme song is in Norwegian.
I love the Razerback design. From the seats that adjust to better position the bodies for the G force direction it is moving (Roci seats adjust their tilt but not direction) , to the history of flight design logo on the side, which takes inspiration and honors Space Ship Two by Virgin Galactic, that crashed. 😥😥
I personally prefer another concept someone did before S3 that showed her as they could get from the books.. Aparently the Razorback does show up in S1 .. in the Footage of Julie celebrating a win with her team (wich Miller is watching) you can see a pointy white ship blurred in the background. I think it was Naren who said that while in S1 they had still not decided yet in the final design they did knew it had to be a pointy white ship so they put that in the background.
Julie no longer in the opening credits, but finally an image of her. Questions about Venus. Find out soon? As for Crisjen and Bobbie, it's fortunate that as one exits her area of competence, the other is able, masterfully, to cover for her -- take over, really. Fun stuff.
Weeks? I went two years between seasons - Netflix only had the first two seasons in 2018 and I didn't get Amazon Prime until El Pandemico hit. Oh, the pain of waiting lol.
Speaking of Ship Names: Razorback is a nickname attributed to wild boars, who run at suprisingly high speeds when suprised or threatened. There are hunting videos on TH-cam displaying their reaction time and speed. For better or worse, they are considered a nuisance animal like coyotes.
If they are non-native, then it's appropriate to consider them pests. Coyotes on the other hand are a natural part of the environment, and them being more of a "nuisance" to people lately is a side effect of wolves being nearly exterminated
@@dapeach06 My designation of nuisance is based on the animal's emcroachment upon OUR environment. I live in the city of Chicago, in the actual city, and we are starting to get coyotes. Not urban myths mind you, on video on the 10 o'clock news.
Yeah, wild boards are a real dangerous problem in many parts of the US. People need to go out with AR-15s and large magazines and just shoot as many of them as possible.
I always thought it was the discussions about Prax's daughter and their search for her that prompted Alex to finally reach out to his family. My personal opinion that that Alex was seeing Prax react to not knowing and wanted to give his family some sort of closure. Of course, that was just my initial take.
I always thought it was Amos commenting last season about Alex not contacting his family. When Amos says something, it's rarely ever a throw away comment.
@@funnylilgalreacts Amos is brining it up to him, and I suppose (narratively) it acts as a form of foreshadowing to remind us that he is in fact married and that he has not contacted them. In seeing Prax, he sees the other side- what he must be putting HIS family through.
One of the nicknames SyFy programmers had for this show was "The Expense". It was a very expensive show to make, and it wasn't earning them enough money due to the details of the deal they had with Alcon the production company. The canceling of the show wasn't a commentary on its quality or anything, it was simply the prudent business decision on SyFy's part. I tend to focus on being grateful that they gave us the first 3 seasons rather than lambasting them for dropping it. Everything ultimately worked out for the best anyway.
When Drummer was doing her inverted crunches, the plan was to use a cable to give Cara Gee an assist. Gee declined and did them unassisted. Respect for Ms. Gee.
Good trivia!

It makes her very relatable.

Amos (or Bobbie in Martian Armour) vs Mando, who would win?
Holden destroying the coffee machine never fails to make me laugh
It's partly not (all) their fault (SYFY),
Back then when they were signing the show for the first season, nobody could have predicted that streaming would blow up as big as it eventually did as the primary platform for millennials ( the key advertising demographic) in how they chose to consume content.
And just a slight small little addendum to why Amazon apparently passed on signing on immediately to a Season 7 (at a higher budget)
Three words ;
Rings of Power.

@Melancthon7332 resurrection spell! All this time I thought it was Protomolecule. 🤷
It’s like getting to watch it yourself, for the first time, again. Kinda like watching your kids watch that one scene in Empire Strikes Back.
Yeah it's funny, reading the books my mind just made the Razorback look like the Swordfish II from Bebop mixed with an X-wing.
And then the show came out and I was like "oh, yeah, obviously that's what the Razorback should look like."
Though they do mention in the book that it has both A: not enough room for more than 2 people comfortably and B: some basic living amenities for longer duration events. So I pictured the interior a bit like a mini camper trailer mixed with the back galley of a 737, with a cockpit that is more-or-less Millennium Falcon. I suppose the Razorback in the show might have a little space down below the seats for a lav and such, but they certainly don't show it.

Man, id love to see this show for the first time again, so good.
Prax _is_ great! There are other good people in the show, but I think he's the only one who is genuinely _nice._ (Alex comes close, but that message to his family may have disqualified him.) We could all use more people like Prax in our lives. "Maybe you should try tea." 😆
Prax is the most satisfying of characters. How this show corralled so much acting talent is a mystery to me.
Yay, time for Bobby and Chrisjen's Happy High-G Funtime Hour!
This season is INCREDIBLE. You're not ready!
I feel like this is right in the middle of an absolute fever pitch this show falls into. Just one banger after another.
Welcome to Season 3
Words cannot describe the utter insanity of awesome episodes you are about to experience.
Nothing else comes close.
Sunday night. Can't sleep. Video drops. I am saved.
This season makes the first two look tame. Just bonkers. You won't breathe through a single episode.
Alex Kamal doesn't want to be a captain. He wants to be a pilot and was finally able to be honest with his family about this. He's also been the "glue" that holds the Rocinante family together (that is what the lasagna is about).
I kept mixing the words captain and pilot. I definitely know that they don’t mean the same thing.
My reaction to my first look at the Razorback "Why, hello beautiful"
"Naomi, sit down!" I laughed so hard.
Loved this episode, great reaction. Nice work, both of you.

Excellent episode - you are going to be in a treat for the next one.
Prax's comment about the tea is one of my favourite lines
When the Arboghast is disassembled it reminded me so much of the "exploded drawings" you used to be able to find of engines and other mechanically complex items to explain what all of the pieces were for and did.
Yes, I love Prax too...
The interpersonal relationships are _gold_ in this series. This grouping was often called "ABC" (Avarsarala, Bobby, Cotyar)
And yes, this whole series is A-MAZ-NG!! Probably my favourite scifi property ever (yes, beating out star wars, babylon5, and battlestar)
I've heard her mention Star Trek and Star Wars, but has she seen Babylon 5?
I have not seen Babylon 5..... YET 👀

Wow season 3!!! Very happy for you!!! Holy 💩!!!
A little more elaboration:
Many P. Contorta populations of the Rocky Mountain subspecies, the cones are closed and must be exposed to high temperatures, such as from forest fires, in order to open and release their seeds.
Good to see Chrisjen get a taste of gravity torture on the Razorback. It might help her empathize with belters.
I don't know if I'd say it's good, but the experience should definitely change her perspective.
Wait for it .... ohh just wait for it .. can't wait to see your face in one of the next episodes 😁
Whoo! Season 3!
It makes me so happy to see your reactions :) I'm glad we have so much left to watch!
The Nauvoo was supposed to knock Eros into the sun, when it missed, it continued towards the inner system, most likely slingshot around the sun and on its way out..
Yeah, I was surprisingly emotional when Holden airbrushed out the Roci's logo too :(
Interesting point you made re Chrisjen in an unprecedented situation of complete helplessness, had never considered that before and you're right, it did make her more interesting, more human. Character development done right.

Bobbie would be a perfect Spartan 😉
34:39 Contorta is a really decent name. Each of the characters burned their own forest down to the ground, so to speak, and a new one is planted. Each of the characters has burned away their old selves and they have grown, a little bit. James and Prax have. Alex has come to realize he can't do it all. I don't think his wife and kid will be appreciative of his growth. Amos has not, he has switched to a new "parent". Naomi, I will say has not. Yet. And, well, Phoenix would have been too cliche'.
This season is great you will love it.
Girl, this season is gonna blow ur mind 😎
Regarding Fred Johnson keeping Earth's nukes and wanting the protomolecule: I think he truly embodies the "si vis pacem, para bellum" philosophy. I think he honestly wants deterrent to avoid being crushed by Earth and/or Mars, and that he is not planning on using those weapons offensively.
But it is still very dangerous that Naomi gave him the protomolecule. He already had a mutiny on Tycho because other factions wanted the nukes, and it was by sheer luck that he made it through that.
Dying laughing at the Mandalorian edit!
Your confusion over the belt needing a navy to be a nation is adorable. You thought they were gonna put everyone in the belt in it like an ark! 🤣
The Mando theme was an Angela request 😬
Great reaction. Yes they can change the ship’s transponder Name back to Rocinante or anything.
Fred Johnson wants the Nauvoo to be the mothership or flagship of the OPA.
Anyone tell you Danica Patrick looks like you? ❤
I used to get that a lot when I was younger
So happey to be in Season 3
Best quote: "Hitch your tits and pucker up, it's time to peel the paint!" said by Bobbie Draper to Chrysjen Avasarala when she was about to take off with the Razorback.
When it comes to The Expanse, it's impossible to pick a favorite episode. There's too many to choose from!
Dude, your expanse reactions are the best.
The writing was definitely on point.
If you ever get to read the books, you’ll be pleased 👍🏽
Wooo Hooo!!!! My favorite season. Don't sweat the name change. Think of it as an alias. After Eros and Ganymede the Roci is pretty well known. Also how many shows do you find with 4 really strong female characters in it?
The ABC relationship (Avarsarela, Bobbie, and Cotyar) is very familial with Avarsarela very much the matriarch and Bobbie and Cotyar acting as adult children responding to the matriarch.
What a f*cking show!
I've seen up to season 4
Love it and you.
Great episode. Drummer becomes one of my favorite characters. The Razorback!!!!
Listening to your analysis. It has me giggling with…An-tici-pation.
In my opinion the best season. You are in for some G’s
I started watching The Expanse during season 2 and after it ended, I picked up the books. I hadn't really read fiction in years due to other hobbies, but I couldn't wait for season 3.
Clicked on this so quick
So weird hearing you talk about Amos as I’ve just listened to the Audiobook The Churn. And so glad you’re in season 3. Which I watched for the billionth time recently and currently enjoying season 4 right now
And as a doctor, I’ll reiterate Chrisjen’s advice
“Don’t forget your antibiotics” 😢
PS. 26:57 my favourite track by Clinton Shorter “what I really wanted”. It gets played a few times in S3. Heck there’s a moment in Book 8 when I imagined it play. They don’t play it enough
The music from The Expanse is available on Spotify.
@@SciFiCatGuy official soundtracks up to S4. Unless Spotify know more?
I did have to wait for the third series! And while it was maddening, the pain was eased by the fact I had at that point read the books up to Persepolis Rising and I had a good idea where the series was going (in fact, Persepolis Rising isn't on TV... Yet... Fingers crossed)
“Heeeres BOBBY” lol
#TeamABC make the best badass comedy trio!!
The music for The Expanse is available on Spotify. 😉
Libya didn't have nukes but did have some other WMD's that they willingly gave up. It did not turn out well for them either.
Not quite, South Africa had them and gave them up when the apartheid regime ended.
@@silgen South Africa is a real mess too, but probably not related.
As for Crisjen and Bobbie, it's fortunate that as one exits her area of competence, the other is able, masterfully, to
cover for her -- take over, really. Fun stuff.
People need to go out with AR-15s and large magazines and just shoot as many of them as possible.
the proto molecule sees everything as a tool or part including people
I always thought it was the discussions about Prax's daughter and their search for her that prompted Alex to finally reach out to his family. My personal opinion that that Alex was seeing Prax react to not knowing and wanted to give his family some sort of closure. Of course, that was just my initial take.
Prax definitely has an effect on every one of our main crew.
That moment when they agreed on Io was sad, as Naomi did not agree, but her vote no longer counted as she had been excommunicated from the team.
I still think this is the best show on television.
love your channel
One of the nicknames SyFy programmers had for this show was "The Expense". It was a very expensive show to make, and it wasn't earning them enough money due to the details of the deal they had with Alcon the production company. The canceling of the show wasn't a commentary on its quality or anything, it was simply the prudent business decision on SyFy's part. I tend to focus on being grateful that they gave us the first 3 seasons rather than lambasting them for dropping it. Everything ultimately worked out for the best anyway.
