Excellent intro album for someone who doesn’t vibe with country or pop bc you start to appreciate her craft and then it isn’t so much of a shock or a stretch to start listening to and appreciating her other albums. This album is satire. So "don't blame me, love made me crazy" Is not what it sounds like. It is actually calling out the press for calling her "love crazy." She is saying, "ok, you all love to call me crazy and in love all the time, so here is a song saying I am when I am just living my life like anyone else. So I will make this banger of a song just to make you all more mad at me for nothing."

Going back through her discography I think it’s important to note how old she was when each album came out since she writes her music. Early albums sound very high school because she was in high school, etc. Just to give you some perspective but there’s crazy lyrics everywhere you look with Taylor regardless of age

Man he pen game is so good that she has an IVY LEAGUE class analyzing her writing, has a doctorate in arts, and has been talked about by people like Paul McCartney to Bob Dylan as being one of the best writers in music history. She’s well regarded solely for her writing, not even adding on the musicality aspects of it all, which is a whole other game. She’s a one and done artist where you will never ever see another Taylor swift.
Seeing this song live at the eras tour (She does 40+ songs for an over 3 hour show) was absolutely mind blowing. Best show I ever been to. Period.

I never paid much mind for Taylor until I decided to watch The Rep tour one day. It was magnificent.
Not sure if you've already/seen or reacted, but her performance of this song recently at the Eras tour... Her voice is even better! But this performance is still my favourite.
She's also kept her same backup singers and band most of her career, so they work super hard together and you can see on stage how joyful they all are.

You should REALLY give her Midnights 3am edition a listen, especially from a production perspective. I think you’ll become a solid Swiftie after that. Timely too, since she’s up for AOTY tomorrow. Rep is one of my favs, but Midnights is spectacular and shows some real growth and maturity in voice and sound. It’s not angsty, Savage Taylor, but it’s smooooooth, reflective, and she’s still not taking any shit and just doing what she does best. Highly rec Lavendar, Maroon, Anti-Hero, and Midnight Rain.
Adding on a request for something a little different from her for you: I’d love to hear your reaction to “My Tears Ricochet” from her Folklore album. Lot of people review her Long Pond version of it, but given you’re an audio engineer, the main studio version may be more interesting for you. Her writing and the production on that makes it one of my favs. But the inflection in her voice on the Long Pond version is in a class of its own. Maybe a comparison reaction of the two together?

By the way. the concept of reputation is a bit complicatedso I'll explain. The show is built like a theatrical unfolding of the story and it's great to watch in order which you've done so far. Basically, she got 'cancelled' in 2016, called a snake after the newest Kanye incident and this was her response album in 2017 to public opinion turning against her. She took the 'evil snake' character/reputation that the media had created for her, and wrote songs from that perspective of the manipulative serial dater they had branded her as, hence the 'toying with them older guys, Just playthings for me to use'. But during that year of bad press, she also found her boyfriend of 7 years Joe Alwyn (who she has now broken up with which is sad because she loved him a lot) and so the album switches halfway into the vulnerable, 'real' Taylor and basically all the songs, even the character ones, like Don't Blame Me are actually love songs about him. So yeah the 'don't blame me' idea is her taking the 'she plays the victim' narrative around her and Kanye and flipping it to make it about how in love she is with Joe, which is the point of the lot of the album - to point out the falseness of her reputation, and show the true her and this love she found. Love your reactions btw.

I've always said, since becoming a fan in 2006, that you don't have to love her or be fan of her music... but don't discredit her just because you think it's cool. She has proven time and again her artistry. She writes, sings, produces, composes, and she puts on one hell of a show. Some days are energized and boppy - 1989. Some days are spicy - Reputation and Midnights. So on and so forth. And every song, if it doesn't grab you right away, it's fine because one day it'll slam you in the face right when you needed it to. It's the great thing about music though, isn't it? It finds you.

Reputation era Taylor Swift is Taylor rising from the ashes after taking some time to deal with the media vitriol and Kanye West situation, and reach a place where she is trying to not rely solely on approval and validation from fans and others. Taylor Swift is very versatile and every album is a bit different, and sometimes very different, but still with her being a master lyricist and story teller. I’m 39, and have liked all versions of Taylor since the start, because in many ways I grew up along with her albums. She’s a 33 year old woman, and matures and evolves, but her music remains so relatable to many.
I know that Taylor may not be everyone’s taste in music, but what drives me crazy, is the degree of unjustified hate she gets from so many people on social media who don’t actually have a clue because they heard a couple of her songs 13 years ago and they assume she’s a no talent teeny bopper who can’t sing and doesn’t even write her own music, when it’s not even remotely true. She has so much appreciation for her fans, and acknowledges they are the reason she is where she is now. She is super successful for a reason, and yet so viciously underrated by so many. I don’t go on pages, posts, or articles about artists who aren’t my cup of tea, posting about how terrible and untalented they are, when I’ve heard like 2 songs by them. It's hard to deny she's talented and hardworking, even if her craft isn't your thing.
