Heritage Turkey Feeding Strategy and Custom Feed Mix

- Here's a custom heritage turkey feed mix that has been working well for year-round feeding. This is much more complete than just plain crumbles. You can make your own ratio- I currently use 3 parts starter, 2 parts scratch, and 1/2 part each of sunflower seeds, oats, and barley.
Poults will still need the plain starter, and hens will still need a calcium source such as oyster shell. They also need access to fresh grass.
Heritage turkeys should also have high-fat treats such as mealworms, and if possible also acorns(and/or olives) when in season.

Mine get a mix of milo, peas, oats, sunflower, flax, & sea kelp. I top with mealworms. They free range & get yogurt making & produce leftovers. Different seeds like pumpkin, squash, millet ect are added when available. They are raised gluten, corn, soy free due to my allergies. I also use a 28% high protein traditional crumble for babies.

Very good. I pretty much do the same in mixing different varieties of food for my chickens. Sure would love to be able to find some baby turkeys. Looking for heritage breed. Years ago I had turkeys, a pet turkey that would gander into the house and jump on the couch and watch tv with me. Good job and video.
Susan if your in the US Cackle hatchery has beautiful turkey chicks available mine from there were amazingly friendly. I also got some of mine from Hoover & they are not so nice in personality most of those were excessively aggressive and no longer with us due to being attacked by them.

I want to start doing/ raising turkey on the farm. My question is
Do they only eat seeds and grains?
What about green vegetables or grass? Do turkey eat that too?
And how much do they eat?
Try fermenting the stuff they don't want to eat
How do you measure the protein level and know it’s accurate for the age of the bird?
Do you also have to give them grit for digestion?
My wife is Mexican and for some reason believes turkeys and chickens should only be fed whole corn like the bags of deer corn you see in stores. She won't listen to me when I point out that they need more than just corn. We use to have 30 chickens now we have maybe 10 counting chicks (she likes to cook the older ones). Someone gave us 25 turkeys (He incubated too many eggs) had over 70 mostly grown turkeys that kept getting out blocking traffic which is why he gave is them. He already talking about giving us more plus a large amount of his ducks and geese. He need to learn not to incubated so many. We live in a small trailer park, not sure where we gonna put them all. Ofcourse my wife don't think of this just think "yes give me total".🤦🏻♂️ does anyone have any cheap feed ideas? I'm between jobs and can't afford all this. I know they need more than just corn.
