Find it funny that Mark, a history of doing the absolute opposite of what he's told chooses this of all games to be the world's #1 tool and follower of authority.
The thing is, the game options clearly suggest that "right" thing to do (or at least the way to get more playtime) is to disobey the Narrator. So in a way, by following "authority", he is not following the actual authority; the developer of the game.

lotta love for jonny in these comments but i think everyone needs to give more appreciation to the princess herself, nichole goodnight, who does literally all of the princess's lines. this will get more impressive as the game lasts longer.
Both Jon & Nichole really do flex the range of their respective talents with each of the Voices and the Princesses encountered throughout the game. I am curious if Markiplier will only do one full playthrough or if he'll try others to encounter the rest of the Princess and Voices. I've only see two separate Let's Play so far of this game, and am very curious to see even more.
@@aidanjackson5084 I hope he plays more, he'd love the Adversary and Tower, the two tall muscular dominant Princesses that can crush him and step on him.
The live playthrough from Black Tabby Games where Jonny and Nichole voice all their lines live is charming as hell and people should watch it! The commentary from the devs and the actors is fantastic too.
From the very first seconds of the game I realized that it's most likely a representation of your anxiety and fears telling you what's best for you. Keeping you away from the things that will actually heal you. First of all, all the voices are the same. That's because it's all your inner voices. The Narrator is anxiety and fear trying to take control over you, convincing you that if you do what he tells you to, you will be happy. But The Narrator isn't just the narrator. He also wants to be the writer, telling you what to do. It's the same way that fear and anxiety sneakily manipulates you into thinking you should do what it tells you. "I care for you" "I'm doing this for you" But the princess is right there. And what's the logic in killing her? The picture for the game has a heart stabbed by a knife. Hearts are a symbol for love. And The Narrator wants you to kill that. Because love can hurt you. It can bring your entire world down. Hero is the voice of your reason. He hesitates and thinks critically. It's like when you're thinking to yourself: "Should I really be doing this?" But fear can quickly convince your reason otherwise if it has a good point. The cold voice is the opposite of the hero. It doesn't care, it sounds empty. And that's because it is. When you feel empty, you don't care. The cold voice is the most easily explained, I think. The Princess is the symbol of the end journey. The goal. To live happily ever after. When main character gets the princess, he has won, everyone is happy, and the story ends. In every story, this is the best outcome for the protagonist. She is a symbol of what you actually need. It'll take a lot more to kill her because love is very hard to kill. The coldest of hearts are able to find love. Your reflection is a symbol of how you view yourself (Shocker) Some ugly dark monster that deserves no such thing as a princess. It's self worth. In the start, The Narrator tells us that the world as we know will end if we don't slay the princess. How does that voice know that? All he wants us to is to kill the only thing that seems to be the best thing for us. Once we kill the princess (love) we get the cold voice. A broken, empty voice who doesn't care whether we live die or kill the princess again. Because once love has been killed once, you won't ever forget that feeling. And it will always linger on in your mind. "Why even bother if they'll leave us again?" "Why bother life if the world is going to end?". That's about all I picked up from it. I did notice some lines like "Is this really what you wanted? Do you hate me so much that you would kill yourself just to deny me freedom?" It goes to represent that fear is willing to hurt yourself directly if it means staying away from love.
If I had a nickel for every time Jonny Simms was trapped in a cabin with a hellish void outside I’d only have two nickels, but it’s still weird that it happened twice.

I'm so glad Mark is playing this game. It deserves the limelight, and while other TH-camrs have covered it and made it fairly popular, having someone like Mark check it out is huge. This game is wonderful, and if you want to explore all of the myriad of dialogue branches yourself, I can't recommend it enough. Even TH-camrs who do "Full Playthrough" and "All Ending" videos of it haven't actually gotten all of the possible dialogue, as the game has so many subtle dialogue changes depending on how you behave as a player throughout. Every little choice matters, even if the game doesn't explicitly label it as a choice that would advance the narrative.
Every time I think I have this game mapped out, I find some crazy combination where some option repeated twice leads to a change in a response two layers deep
@@kelly4187 I want to play this game so badly but why does it scare me sm that there are countless pathways. Maybe I am just finding something out about myself? But maybe playing this game myself will help me heal that fear off the unknown that's seemingly lying inside my unconsciousness....
In my head there is always a right or wrong. Even the instruction to the game states that there are no true endings, or right or wrong decisions.. but in my world, up until I actively try to alter my mind(set), there will always be a right or wrong; due to my moral compass and the way I see Life itself

The reason the Narrator and all the voices sound the same is because all the voices (aside from the princess) are voiced by the same guy, Jonathan Sims! He's a really talented voice actor (he also has a podcast series called The Magnus Archives that he wrote and plays the main character!)
It took me awhile when I first saw a Let's Play of this game that made me think "That Narrator and the Voices sound familiar," and to find out it was Jon the Archivist from "The Magnus Archives" is quite the surprise. Can definitely see the range of his voice throughout this game, especially with the various Voices within the player's head
I came to the comments looking for this. I've been listening to TMA for about a year, and after two lines here I'm like "Is that-? I mean, surely not..." I get up and check steam: "IT IS!!"
Just in case it wasn't clear: the (explore) tag options have means you can *expect* to be able to not progress the choices. It can be useful if you're trying to get information, for example from that hand thing you encountered.
Found that out myself; I was trying to do a completionist run, but I wasn't sure I was getting all of the dialogue. Lots to do in what seems like a simple game.
kind of a mindfuck that I finished The Magnus Archives a week ago and now Markiplier's character seems to be trapped in a Domain, complete with a statement by The Archivist

I’ve played this game before. I don’t understand what there would be spoilers to? I finished it Edit: apparently I didn’t understand the “twist” I played all ending and as beautiful as this game is it was really confusing
The Narrator: "You did kill someone. Greater good or not, something would be very wrong with you if you didn't feel at least a little bit bad." Mark (doesn't feel at least a little bit bad): SLAY THE PRINCESS!
For anyone seeing this game for the first time I HIGHLY RECOMMEND playing the game yourself before watching a playthrough. Making your own choices is very satisfying. Mark is playing this game very differently than how I started, I actually got to see a new "perspective" from this so playthroughs are still enjoyable.
I havent watched Mark in years. To come back and watch that first 14 minutes was just the most "some things never change" moment in my life. I cannot breathe it was that funny. Never change Mark. You are the definition of happy.
I watched Manly's playthroughs of this originally, so I was super excited to get to see Mark's version. The fact that he went for the "good ending" on the first run is honestly hilarious. Also, seeing Manly's name in the credits was amazing. Can't wait to watch more
I saw RTGame's perspective (after beating the game myself) he got my favorite ending. Mark has already hit interactions I didn't even know about, I'm excited to see where he goes
Personally I just started my journey through the Magnus archive. I listen to alot of podcasts at night while I work as the only overnight custodian. So to hear Jhonathan's voice here was a shock in a different way. It was like the podcast had just come to life for a second since it was a different platform I was hearing him from.
I have to commend Mark for being one of the few youtubers I've seen go "Whatever you say, Narrator, time to slay that princess!" and then completely follow through
I'm guessing a lot of people might say this, but there was a lot of dialogue you missed because of not choosing the "(Explore)" options. Whenever an option is labeled "(Explore)" it almost always doesnt change your path or what choices you can make, and mainly just gives optional dialogue, which can be very helpful with piecing the lore together, especially in the final sequence
@@mrksimka1159I know certain explore options in the first chapter can lead to you getting specific chapter 2’s if you try to slay her (I.e questioning whether the princess has a weapon in any way will lead to razor, telling her about her being supposed to end the world leading to tower), and I’m also pretty sure if you exhaust your explore options in razor she gets bored and attacks you without you picking whether to attack her/release her/run/etc, but outside of that I’m not super sure?
i like how mark tackled this one, way back when people started playing this game, they would ask questions, meander around, TALK to the princess, and generally make a mess of things, but mark here got right to the point (of a blade, get it), that feels like the best way to start this before getting distracted(able) and into the weeds of path/ending hunting or lore hunting
In my perfect little world Markiplier likes the narration so much that he looks up who plays the narrator and then becomes a fan of Jonathan sims and then the Magnus archives
@@Nikowo1610BRUH that'd be so good, or better yet a show that can run for a few seasons for all the statements, and then we get The Magnus Protocol after
This game is cool. I like how clear it is the narrator is trying to manipulate you into feeling a certain way about the situation or make a certain choice through his descriptions and dialogue. Basically right off the bat when you get to the cabin he sets a certain tone. Tries to make you feel that this cabin is a bad place with bad things in it, and by extension the princess locked therein is bad too. Deliberateky trying to make you uncomfortable rather than letting you come to your own conclusions. It's the best use of the unreliable narrator trope I've seen in a while. Not just because of how blatant it is, but also the fact that everything else remains unclear so you still don't know what choice to make despite the narrator's obvious manipulation. There's a demo on steam btw.
I wouldn't say he was very obvious, I think he was only obvious since Mark was being so compliant lol. Because of that compliancy he eventually didn't think to put any more effort to manipulating, probably relieved that Mark's just following without _any_ hint of question at all. At the start he was a bit trickier, to be much more convincing. But it isn't perfect, which is why most people, who're in their right mind at least, would be able to pick it up quite easily.

Mark is the first person I've seen to immediately recognize that he's a bird creature instead of just being generally weirded out by his own monster hand. I didn't make the connection until later on.
For real. I was so sure I knew this voice from somewhere and then the credits revealed Jonathan Sims, and now all I can hear is the Archivist talking to himself again
"I think I'm going to play this game to completion": Omg yes, please, there seems to be _so much_ choices and options there, and I'd love to see them all, or as much as can be! This sort of ultra-meta game is always so much fun to watch!
Weird that Mark is only now getting to Slay the Princess with The Pristine Cut right around the corner, but hey, more eyes on Black Tabby Games is only a good thing, their stuff deserves it.
I both love and find it incredibly annoying how shallowly-deep this game's choices are. Mark was extremely get-to-the-point the entire time and so when he was possessed the spectre was cold and distant, just using him as a means to an end, but if you actually talk with her a bit it can completely flip with her actually reassuring you and encouraging you to hold it together and get out. It's basically an entirely different experience, yet it's technically the same ending because things only majorly change on the reset points. The "explore" options are basically what define the entire game, yet they're labled as "explore" options, which implies they're just extra superficial detail.
@@lrose5522tthat is literally the *_only_* thing that progresses the story. If you do not use the xplore options you're locked into a tiny handful of possible endings. So few that I'm not sure it's even possilbe to beat the game at all without eventually being forced to use them in order to get enough different variants
@@lrose5522 I would argue that the better description of "explore" options are that they can change the story (because they give you more information, and by extension change your perception of the princess), but by themselves, they don't advance the current scene.
@@robonator2945 I agree with how important the explore options are, but not so much with the idea of the game not treating them as 'important.' Yes, they're called explore, but that doesn't inherently mean they're superficial, and if someone isn't using them enough to realize how much depth they hold, I doubt they really care enough to explore much of the story and theme to begin with.
At least the game has one section that forces the issue. Mind you, you also have the authority to screw that up if you don't realize what's happening soon enough so... we'll just see what Mark does. We'd be no better than the Narrator if we backseated too much, after all.
Listening to Jonathan Sims narrate a spooky tale for 40 minutes? Perfect (it took me 2 seconds and then I immediately gasped out loud - our archivist!) Also, I'm absolutely loving the flashbacks/references to In Space w/ Markiplier, the themes and story were so so good

Bruh why, your profile picture made me think TH-cam commented on the video
lotta love for jonny in these comments but i think everyone needs to give more appreciation to the princess herself, nichole goodnight, who does literally all of the princess's lines. this will get more impressive as the game lasts longer.
Pretty sure I've heard Nichole Goodnight in the no sleep podcast and I always love her voice these are 3 great voices together in one video
Nicole Goodnight is so good
The live playthrough from Black Tabby Games where Jonny and Nichole voice all their lines live is charming as hell and people should watch it!
This is the critical analysis I needed hahaha

I totally agree!!

I'm guessing a lot of people might say this, but there was a lot of dialogue you missed because of not choosing the "(Explore)" options.

It doesn't imply that they're extra superficial detail at all. They're "explore" options because they don't progress the story.

"WELL... i know the name of the game..!"
*Mark, btw, kinda important, the [Explore] options let you pick other options without progressing through the story while giving you additional paths/context.*
9:24 and 11:42 He's already close to figuring out what the entity is supposed to explain through the [Explore] questions in this round at the end. I want to add that these aren't spoilers or that he's playing the game "wrong", just wanted to comment this because he got mega-confused at the end because he skipped. He might figure it out later, I noticed it's something commonly overlooked in Let's Plays is all.
You should mark spoiler in you comment so mark doesn't see
@@jaysondavis9693 It isn't spoilers, these are just things he missed.
@@jaysondavis9693 plus, he got mega-confused at the end when he skipped through all of them
Shuddup, let him come to realizations on his own. I know you want to help and it's in good faith. But even micro-hints stack up and car ruin his first time. Let's not have another Undertale incident.
@@KaminaCicada they were just trying to help besides we should be grateful that they didnt give any spoilers
I have never been so happy to see a Slay the Princess video!! This game needs more recognition it's so fucking awesome.
I know the feeling, I can barely contain myself around friends just enough to say "If you love stories, play Slay the Princess."
FR FR FR FR I GOT SO EXCITED WHEN I SAW THE NOTIFICATION
Same!! It’s genuinely one of the most thought provoking and beautiful games around right now.
9:22 He immediately worked out how the whole game functions.
Revisiting the video, I was about to comment the same
That was so funny of him to figure out but not realize it!
Proud that Mark managed to avoid any potential spoiler about this game for this long
mark AND johnny sims??? I'M SOLD
Who is Johnny Sims?
@@complex2live jonathan sims is the voice of the narrator in this game. he's also a horror author and the co-creator of the magnus archives, a popular horror podcast
@@fusiongrenade Oh, I mistook him for the fireman, police officer, pizza delivery guy, plumber... really a multi-faceted man.
i love jonathan sims, voice of jonathan sims
@@kido_ You're thinking Sins. This is Sims. Easy mistake. Voice actor would just be another notch on the profession bedpost.
Never in a million years did I think Mark would make a series of my new favorite story game
SAMMEEE
It's so exciting! I really hope this will give the game the attention it deserves!
Considering the choices Mark makes in this run through the game, it'd be a lot of fun to see a run through the Pristine Cut, especially if he gets some of the new routes.
I kinda want to just make the exact same decisions he made before just so he can get most of them
The fact that I started listening to The Mangus Archives because Mark wasn't uploading and this is one of his first games back...
...gods be dammed it's all come full circle
this is a great game, i suggest thumper, jubilee, splasher, nerve, deathmark 2, chaos head noah, and the purrfect apawcalypse trilogy purrgatory furever
also the best ps1 game ever is BRAVE FENCER MUSASHI
Hearing Johnny Sims in a markiplier video gave me such whiplash
Yesss Markiplier and Jonathan Sims in the same video (sort of lol) I was hoping Mark would play this!
WOW, “Slay the Princess”??? this is about to be great
SO GREAT
I know
It’s a great game
I thought I recognized the narrator's voice, so I looked into it and found that the narrator is voiced by Jonathon Sims, who also does the Magnus Archives. Great podcast, highly recommend.
The Paranoid and the Narrator spatting whilst the Hero amateurishly running the autonomic neural maintenance with the Nightmare princess deadass glaring at the protagonist who's having a literal internal dispute is just peak VN game.
The paranoid is the one keeping you alive, not the hero. The hero is the one bickering.
The Paranoid is one of the best voices.
@@squidmom3162They mean when the hero takes over for a while.
"so was it heart? then lungs uhhhh... liver. What's the next one? *checking list aha, nerves!"
@@phasedcloak2835 Heart, Liver, Lungs, Nerves
jonnys voice is so different when he's not playing a spooky archivist
..as soon as I typed this he started getting spooky. as soon as the basement door opened I was like "oh hello archivist"
Hearing Jonathan "The Archivist" Sims voice throughout the whole game gives me life. And Mark being added in makes it so much more great.
agreed bro i love jonathan sims
Mark talking about In Space With Markiplier: ‘Did you find the musical?’
Me *immediately* breaking into ‘Space was so-o co-o-o-o-ol…’
Watching mark then getting a AFK journey Ad with Mark playing it, is peak entertainment
