I respectfully disagree with your take that Sam wasn’t a coherent character.
The reason why Sam switches sides so easily is that he’s having a hard time believing in anything. After being defeated by Armstrong, he’s just accepted that the violence is the only thing he really cares about. It doesn’t matter who’s side he’s on anymore.
I think his goal wasn’t ever to make Raiden feel bad about killing, but the opposite. To bring out Jack the Ripper, and make Raiden lose his moral philosphy, his identity, just like Sam did.
In the end, he let Wolf give Raiden the sword because he didn’t harbor any loyalty for Armstrong. He didn’t care which side won. ”Let history decide who is right”

Another thing to consider for the bosses and something that makes Armstrong unique is that you slice and dice most bosses to pieces after their battle. One aspect you missed about Monsoon’s boss fight is that it teaches you to parry. I bet 80% of players didn’t know how to parry until they got to Monsoon. You could use evading easily up until then, but when Monsoon lobs those smoke grenades, it’s all over. The fight literally forces you to learn how to parry and helps you by doing so. Take Sundower for example, he’s supposed to teach you how to be precise with blade mode, but you can evade his shield moves so who cares? You don’t have to learn! And when you wake up fighting Armstrong you suddenly realize you cannot defend yourself from him lunging pieces of EXCELSUS at you. Monsoon however forces you to learn his niche, unlike Sundowner.

An interesting thing to note from the monsoon fight at 15:28: Monsoon actually has two different lines of dialogue here, one is the "stop it!" that you showed in the video, but there is an alternate line where he says "do as you please." • @Cytonox

I’m pretty sure it has to do with the time you take to kill him or the amount of damage you take. I’ve never seen confirmation of this, but it kinda makes sense so I just assumed that was the case

I know I'm late to this but I'm pretty sure it's explained in the codecs during Excelsus' fight that it was created specifically for head to head combat and it was given the name 'Metal Gear' specifically for fear tactics. They also explain many other advantages that it would have in a warzone; buildings in the way? Just walk over them, regular cyborgs that are commonly used for war? Just watch them try to destroy this thing. Excelsus could literally enter a warzone and destroy everything easily, Raiden was probably the only person in the world who could destroy it single-handedly just because of how insanely powerful he is and even then, he had to slowly tear it apart piece by piece and even use its own sword against it in the end to destroy it.

Although I would have liked it even more if you ranked the Sam DLC boss fights too (MG Ray, Blade Wolf and Armstrong), even though they are very similar to the ones in the main game, they still have some differences (specially the Armstrong one) and they are played differently thanks to Sam’s more patience and heavy attack based move set. It would have been very interesting to see which of the two variants of the boss fight you prefered (which I guess would be the originals but still, you get the point).

EXTREMELY UNDERWHELMING. It's very, VERY easy. The only thing that could be kinda difficult is to cut the shields, BUT YOU CAN LITERALLY SKIP THAT PART. For a Character as treathening and important in the story as Sundowner, you would expect a much better fight, but they gave us this. This fight being so simple and easy would make sense if it was at the start of the game. BUT IT'S LITERALLY ONE OF THE LAST BOSSES. It's not even fun because of how easy it is.
    9. Metal Gear EXCELSUS:
It's a decent fight, but it doesn't come close to the other ones. All the attacks are repetitive and boring. They are just "parry the shit out of this thing, then hit it" or "Run, then hit". At least it can be challenging in VH or Revengeance difficulty. Oh, and the vocals of the OST only play when you're Zandatsu-ing it. That shit made the fight a lot worse for me at least.
    8. Metal Gear RAY:
It's an epic fight, but can be kinda slow and boring in high difficulties because of how weak Raiden is at this point of the story. At least it's kinda difficult on higher difficulties. In revengeance, just one hit of this massive machine can kill you, making you start the fight all over again. Again, is not as near as great as the others but is a good start to the game.
    7. Wolf:
I actually really like this fight, but i gotta say, it's actually nothing special. Is just a mini boss put halfway through the level so the player can learn how to parry. And that's it. It can be actually very difficult the first time you play of course, specially beacuse the difficulty of the game spikes when you reach this fight, but other than that is probably the easisest fight in the game (at least is more fun than Sundowner's fight).
    6. Mistral:
Your first real boss fight in the game. It has 3 phases, each one of them with different moves, so repetitive attacks are not a problem here. My personal issue with this fight is that it isn't really spectacular, and it doesn't has a lot of weight in the story. Sure, Mistral's death is brutal and it's really cool to fight her in the burning refinery, but damn. It's not as spectacular as Armstrong's fight, and it doesn't have the weight that Sam's fight has (you don't know Mistral from anything. She's just a french chick that gives you a short uninteresting talk before her fight, then you kill her). And in terms of difficulty, the little Gekkos can be annoying in VH or Reevengeance but that's it. It's pretty meh and boring.
    5. Armstrong (Sam DLC):
This is, BY FAR, the hardest boss. I can kill every boss on Revengeance difficulty, even no damaging most of them, and i still struggle to beat this guy on Hard. He does a lot of damage. He has A LOT of range. A TON of life. And he nevers give you a break. Really a hard boss. I enjoy it tho, and it's one of my favourites bosses, but i still think the other bosses are better. Really nice and fun boss nonetheless.
    4. Khamsin (from now on, these are the top tier bosses):
Really fun and enjoyable boss. It's like MG RAY boss fight but in reverse. You don't chase the mech, NOW HE CHASES YOU! His attacks can be predictable, and most of them are parryable, but they still can be tricky to avoid, specially because he executes them in succession. Also, this shit is amazing. There's something really cool about this fight. Maybe it's the god tier soundtrack (my favourite in the game, i wish the lyrics kicked in earlier tho), or the really cool animations, or the fact that you're being chased by a big mech wielding a giant turbo axe controlled by a Guile looking soldier while he gives you speeches about freedom. I don't know man. It's just really cool and it maybe even be my favourite boss. Also, this boss could be as hard as DLC Armstrong if he didn't give you so many heal items.
    3. Sam:
Just before the final boss fight, you have one last encounter with your rival. A duel to death between the two most skilled swordsmen in the Metal Gear universe (sorry Gray Fox). This is the fight with the most weight in the game, besides Armstrong, and besides, it's fucking awesome. It's really dinamic and requires you to be focused, because he loves to throw you a ton of attacks and counterattacking yours, so you need to choose really well the moment to get agressive, and the moment to get defensive. Amazing fight.
    2. Armstrong:
This fight is really fucking epic. It's the climax of the game, where you finally face the big boss (no pun intended) of the game, and you both fight like animals, throwing punching at each others to determine who's right. The fight actually isn't difficult at all. In Revengeance it can be hard if you got no heals, but if that's the case you just need to survive and drop his healthbar to 150%, and then you geat a lot of cures. Still, even if it's not really hard, it's fucking awesome. And the cutscenes before and after this fights are the best ones in the game, and maybe even in the whole game industry.
    1. Monsoon:
The best one. Period. If Wolf was the boss in charge of forcing the player to learn to parry, this boss is the one that checks how much you really have learnt. This boss fight is the real wall that determines if you can move forward to the game or keep stuck until you get better. This fight requires you to do a lot of things. Zandatsuing, parrying, dodging, and even throwing objects, all with a kickass soundtrack in the background. Also, i said Mistral was uninteresting because she was just a hot french girl who you barely knew, and felt just like an obstacle more than a character. Well, Monsoon is the opposite. Even if they never give you real context on who he is, he still makes a great job introducing himself and being a memorable character. Those cutscenes are just exquisite, like the man himself would say.

I despise Sundowner. It's because it took me an astonishing 8 hours (40ish minutes per run) of combined gameplay to S tier him and the entirety of his level on revengeance. You have to hold back so much to:
Not break his shields too fast so you can take out two helis so they dont trouble you in the 2nd phase
Not kill him before he can spawn atleast 1 set of enemies
Like no damage doesnt even get you an S tier because he just dies too fast that I often found myself switching to the wooden blade so he can just live a bit longer.

The theory of "It has to be this way" actually being raidens theme makes a lot of sense once you put extensive thought into it. With every other characters theme, you'll notice it almost seems as if they would be singing the lyrics in reference to themselves. Mistral talking about "finding what I was looking for" or Sam not truly knowing what he's fighting for anymore, and even Sundowners beliefs that machines and war will prevail. Collective Consciousness makes more sense as the senators theme as it talks about controlling the masses as you'd expect from a corrupt political figure such as himself. Raiden realizing that both him and Armstrong are fostering eachothers violence without being able to stop without stopping thier own mission makes perfect sense when looking into the lyrics of the song.

Monsoon is definitely my favorite member of the winds of the destruction, but his fight has way to many slow bits that hurt the flow of the fight. I think they should of removed the trash wheel from it completely, it’s unbelievably easy to avoid and it just feels like pointless padding. The part when he throws vehicles at you goes on for to long and it’s way to easy to run away from it. Other then that his fight is perfect.
My biggest gripe so with the Armstrong fight is the part on top of the metal gear, trying to no damage him is nearly impossible because of that.

Overall great video, surprisingly underrated. Your choices are almost 1:1 with mine, my only difference being that I'd swap Mistral and Blade Wolf - the Dwarf Gekkos were a bit of a pain in the ass to micromanage, but I'm more of a one-on-one fight kinda guy, so the difference in choice is understandable.
Also quick sidenote; you can also use Monsoon's Sai to immediately stun him once he enters his immunity phases after his Lorentz force throws! (By hitting the heavy attack button at a distance while locked onto him.)

hey love your review of bosses rank and mostly agree but
when it comes to the Sam rank
I mostly agree at least with gameplay , the main problem with his gameplay is that in his in phase 3 he can randomly shoot rocks from almost any distance and often is straight up an guarantee hit, (I am speaking from experience after fighting Sam on very hard, no upgrades with default sword,) outside of that, I think his fight I think was basically perfect,
however you did write say about how you dislike his character, and while it is fine to have that opinion, I have to disagree with you on this,( it been a while since I played it so I might miss something)
my interpretation of Sam was that he was like Raiden at the start of the main story, Sam denies the truth of the matter and believes he can stop World Marshall and stop the system, however when at first loses to Armstrong and the proganda that both him and Monsoon feeds Sam(much like how they did to Raiden in Denver prior to the Monsoon boss fight) however what separates him from Raiden is the difference in choice, when Sam was confronted by the fact he might not be able to stop World Marshall and such, he decides to join Armstrong and loses his sense of honor only fighting for self improvement in combat because in his mind, there is no significant change that is possible, so might as well join them to improve himself in fighting the only the "he knows for real", because of this, he and monsoon tries to show something that Raiden denies that he enjoys killing and the violence, however unlike Sam, Raiden comprises himself, and decides he may enjoy the violence but he will use it for good and won't comprise his ideals of fighting for justice and improvement of the world even it hurts some people, unlike Sam. moving to the Sam boss fight, when sam fights Raiden it is said in one of the codex calls " it is a battle of the wills" so when Raiden says "I have more enough cause for killing you" Sam realizes he will prob lose(this is why he says "good I like that", as the reason Sam won in the first time was due to Raiden's self conflict. In the end Raiden is given his sword, due to being the one Sam always wanted to be, the one who can make a difference in the world as Raiden fights a representative of government
    Tl;DR
Sam and Raiden have their separate hero journies. Sam fails his, Raiden succeeds at what Sam failed at, keeping his ideals while accepting the problem.
it all suppose to parallel the whole issue with 21th century politics never ending stagnation, Sam is the people who believe no change is possible and stays obediently behind the politics, Raiden is the opposite is willing to change while also understand he is not an ideal person and such
that at least my interpretation, I would like to see an opposing view if you disagree with me.

    • @Cytonox
      @Cytonox  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That sounds pretty on the money to me. I hadn’t considered Sam functioning more as a part of Raiden’s arc as much, which definitely makes more sense than considering his story in isolation. Thanks for the explanation so long after I put this video out

    • @eladrand4866
      @eladrand4866 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Cytonox Thx for responding, and I am glad we can agree.
I also should mention. The whole Sundowner being pussy and being weak makes sense to me, he type of guy who thinks he would be top of the food chain when in reality he would one of the first to fall, he would say "We aren't creating war were are just profiting off it" then the first time you meet he is trying to cause civil war in africa and wants to start war with pakistan, his dishonorable actions and false idenity is why he uses things that have almost no connection to him, for example using samurai armor and using "Sundowner" when in reality he is Alabamian.
I won't fill entire comment section with explaining characters, but if you are intersted I recommend MangaKamen and Meti for their character studies

Actually, if you were to S rabk Monsoon, he has one more chip of dialogue after you beat his face in. "Do as you please!" Monsoon straight up says that you're top dog, slice him down as you like. You beat him good, so it's only natural to give respect to the top dog. You can dig into this a lot more than me, so speak away.
    Edit:
My ranking goes as following, not including Grad and Hammerhead since we know those are the worst bosses.
    9: Sundowner -
Sundowner might be a great marmonger with his "Give War A Chance" mantra, but he feels like he's at the bottom of the Winds of Destruction. He's just a warmonger, that's it.
    8: Khamsin -
Khamsin isn't very far from Sundowner, as his "faceless soldier" persona mirrors the warmonger Sundowner is. The only reason why I put him higher than Sundowner is his similarity to Blade Wolf. Both being ready made killing machines, one quite literally and the other being made into such over time. Plus, Khamsin might be angry at Blade Wolf for attempting to defy superiors, because soldiers should not do that, so he fights Blade Wolf.
    7: Mistral -
Mistral has a similar explanation to your take, but only reason why she's lower down is because of the soundtrack, which spams the "Here I come!" line way too much.
    6: MG Ray -
MG Ray's "Rules of Nature" theme might be one of the reasons it's in the middle. Developed not too much but enough that it seems like a good character if it weren't a fvcking nuke robot.
    5: MG Excelsius -
So uh, Fun fact: MG Excelsius is given the MG title to sell better! This fun fact fits with Collective Consciousness which talks about living in ignorance and purchasing your happiness. (That was intended. This boss was carried by the soundtrack and soundtrack alone, which is a straight up banger.)
    4: Bladewolf -
He's a metal dog, wanting to experience freedom because his creators didn't grant him such a luxury. Why wouldn't I love this character?
    3: Monsoon -
    Literally your reasons.
    2: Jetstream Sam -
He's a being resembling cowboys and samurai if they were combined. His body may be human, but his identity refers to him as a being. Love this character.
    1: Senator Armstrong -
Your reasons. Also the fact that Armstrong actually cares for his people, with his mantra of "Let people fight their own wars."

It's been a while so correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the whole point of excelsis was not to be effective, rather it was supposed to cause extreme collateral damage and be threatening. Though I may be mixing up a few games so take it with a pretty hefty pinch of salt.

As someone who spent a stupid amount of time s ranking the whole game on revengeance with no damage, this is my list. I loved each boss, I just have some least favorites (ignoring the minibosses)
    9. Khamsin (torture on difficulties above hard, but ultimately pretty simple)
    8. Sundowner (Deserved better)
    7. Mistral (Stupid minions)
    6. Excelsus (Idk I loved that one scene so much where you just throw it)
    5. Blade wolf (A very simple boss if you know what to do, but very fun to learn)
4.Metal gear ray (same reasons as the video, but how dare you rate it above Sam)
    3. Jetstream sam (Outstanding boss, I loved everything about it. Avoiding and parrying his attacks becomes really easy after consistent effort, which is my only complaint.)
    2. Monsoon (Using finesse when he hurls military vehicles at you is so much more fun than swinging willy nilly, and he had so many areas for me to improve in that when I finally beat him without damage it was so exciting)
    1. Armstrong (Does this need explaining? Only complaint is that getting the no damage rank requires you to also include not getting hit in his hand-to-hand phase, which was torture)

Adding on to the theory of It has to be this way being Raidens theme, Collective Conciousness is also perceived to be from Raidens perspective of armstrong. Raiden initially believes that armstrong wants to perpetuate the Patriots goals of a unified nation without individuals (as does Jetstream Sam when he fights armstrong, believing the same thing where armstrong wants to have a hivemind) but during the fight on top of EXCELSUS there's a lack of an actual theme and it's just the generic battle music before the final phase where Raiden realizes that armstrong is right, but "it has to be this way" and armstrong inevitably needs to die then and there

Bosses that allow you to land counterattacks can easily be dealt with via a quick Ripper Mode activation as you're moving to land the attack, as it can take a huge chunk of their bar in one attack, which is perfect for the Sam fight on any difficulty. I even saw someone one-shot Sundowner by doing this, the boy got punked HARD.

problems i have with each boss fight:
hammerhead: this fight is just boring really, airborne enemies just don't work very well in this game
grad: not all that bad normally, but in the harder difficulties having two can be a bit annoying at times, main issue is that sometimes they just start running away for ~20-30 seconds which is really annoying, the way that they can't hit you most of the time when you get close also means it kinda just is a button mash most of the fight
khamsin: i haven't actually done blade wolf yet, so i can confirm it is one of the bosses of all time, it was certainly made
excelsus: takes a while, since you cant really parry anything to make it go faster, but is also really easy, so it kinda is just boring, hardest part was when it spawned in some enemies
sundowner: second phase is actually pretty fun but since he dies so quickly you don't get to play very much of it, and first phase is one of the fights of all time
blade wolf: actually just good, sometimes he spams the knife attack like 4 times in a row but it isn't that bad, also just not cutting him at the ending blade mode causes him to just kinda randomly explode at the end of his speech, and its pretty funny
mistral: the little guys are annoying, but their ai most of the time just sits and watches so not much of an issue, they block so many attacks before you're legally allowed to do anything, and the spin move lasts so long and they do it so often, but parrying kinda just says no to their everything and you just skip the annoying parts, so it's fine
jetstream sam: very epic and cool, i only fight it with hf blade, and it's just a really good fight mostly, only problem is when he loses his sword the gameplay just stops, it kinda just devolves to: wait for him to dash at you, block it, then get your one light attack in before he dodges everything, repeat, however i found that with thunderstrike you wont cause him to dodge, and it has more range than he has with his attacks so it can just cheese him to third phase, which is also just epic
ray: it's kinda just an ok fight, there's a lot of chasing it around which can be a bit annoying, but the way blocking it lets you do a blade mode section is pretty cool, in second phase the jumping over the laser hitbox is a little scuffed sometimes, and the part where you run down the tower has some visibility issues sometimes, which caused me a few deaths in my first playthrough, but if you just spam jump there's not much of an issue
monsoon: the theme is my favorite, the song just feels faster than the other ones which is nice, but with the actual fight: the smoke attack lasts a really long time and is comically easy to block, so it gets a bit annoying, in the part where he throws stuff at you sometimes you just can't see them coming because the smoke from the other ones exploding covers them up, and the parry timing feels a bit unintuitive for a lot of the attacks, but overall just a good fight
armstrong: the speech is an absolute classic, but it absolutely saves the first "phases" of the fight, since they kinda just are run away until next cutscene starts, and armstrong does very little during it, main problem being how long it lasts, in the actual fight, the attacks are a bit slow which makes it kinda easy, except for a few attacks that are kinda hard to tell when you have to dodge it since armstrong doesn't move very much during his attacks, qte is fun, blade mode sections also fun, my main problem is the attack where the large walls of lava or fire come up from the ground, because a lot of the time the ai will just sit in the walls and do nothing, so i just have to sit there and wait for it to go away, and it lasts way longer than it should, which really interrupts the flow that the rest of the fight gets you into, kinda ruins the fight for me since he uses it pretty often, the move where he heals can be slightly annoying if he uses it while far away from you but it's not too much of an issue

I agree with the MG Excelsus rank, but one thing that’s stated in game is the fact that it’s only called a “Metal Gear” for the sake of marketing (military companies might be more willing to buy and pay more for them) and inciting fear.

  • @pantuternik

The thing about Sundowner is that he plays into that Southern stereotype, as he is from Alabama; what he says and first seems to be is not what he truly is, as that is only a cover-up to the reverse - his bravado is meant to be hypocritical, he uses all these cheap tactics because he ain't actually that good at fighting, after all he runs away as long as he can because he fears you. Monsoon took Raiden head on, while Sundowner flew to the top floor where everything can come to his advantage - he has special gear in the form of those shields, helicopters, can call in extra enemies and he only pretends to having been beaten, to then surprise attack Jack with the Slider.

I really disagree about monsoon, but I'm talking from a revengeance no hit perspective. In my first hard mode playthrough, he was a really solid B+ tier boss but the amount of randomness in his attacks is infuriating when trying to nohit.
The attack where he throws helicopters at you becomes inconsistent once you get to the third barrage so running is more reliable but it's not perfect, and if you skip phases by abusing the pincer blades his attack patterns become incredibly unpredictable if you don't play perfectly by staggering him enough.
Sam definitely deserved the number 2 spot imo, the ONLY problem with his fight is the rock attack as it's almost impossible to predict if he does it when you're at close range. You have to parry, realise the parry didn't work and then dodge all in half a second to avoid being hit

  • @TheBreadbear
    @TheBreadbear 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I know this video is relatively old but i gotta vent. Armstrong is not the most difficult boss fight in the game. It also ties into what i believe is the truly worst boss fight in the game. I'm talking about Grad. Between hard and very hard it goes from kinda pointless boss fight to introduce an enemy type to the biggest roadblock that is based on annoyance rather than skill. The environment is filled with destructible objects that will explode on impact (except for when they don't and explode on collision with you). If you get hit by 1 shot of its cannon than there is a good chance that it will hit you with the rest of its barrage (depending on distance and even than you must be very far). Camera is especially fucky since there are 2 giant metal zoomers on roller skates so it might just give up and throw itself into a wall. God protect you if you are forced to play this on mouse and keyboard.

  • @oneofevery9365
    @oneofevery9365 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Play the game on hard mode (not revengence that has a luxury of killing someone on the spot with a single parry)
Then you will have a different opinion on grad's mini boss fight, since there are two of them, the one that transforms has a larger health pool, while also trying to not take any dmg for a S rank
And don't talk smack about hammerhead like that, sure it's not really a boss fight, especially when someone plays the game on easy, but the music is a banger
Being chased on a bridge with a theme like that in the background is a chef's kiss

Sam I think is best enjoyed at high difficulty under the unspoken rule of this particular boss. A lot of players (myself included) out of respect for the character and the duel will turn off nanopastes and will only use the HF Blade, Murasama, or the wooden sword against him. You should try it, it makes this battle exhilarating.

As awesome as armstrong is, i gotta say, the move where he charges his fist and hits the ground is pretty bullshit. That move can lead to the ground exploding in a line (which he sometimes immediately does a second time), the ground exploding in the shape of a circle, the ground exploding in a line but lava keeps bursting from the ground forming some sort of deadly wall or he can form cracks in the ground that burst out lava for a moment after a few seconds. All those different moves have the exact same tell and you can never know which one it is except for the very first one at the start of the fight which is almost always the single line version (usually he does it twice). While all the versions of this move are very cool, when playing on revengeance where everything one shots you they feel very poorly designed. Also when he charges at you with his fist for the qte cutscene, to me it seems like its random which one youll get (tho it might be based on the parry timing)
