Aleksandar Vučic has spent his presidency walking a delicate balance between the East and the West by applying for EU membership while also cosying up to Russia and China. But how is he able to manage this geopolitical juggling in such a divisive era?

@1:50 The democratic pro-European party didn't come to power after proclamation of Kosovo's independence. Quite the opposite, it ruled up until around when Kosovo declared independence in 2008, when public support switched to SNS and the old radical party cadre. Up until then, there was hope that turning to the west or joining the EU wouldn't be conditioned by the Kosovo issue, since it was portrayed as such. Only when Kosovo unilaterally declared independence, and the west gave it unconditional support, did the public support drop , and skepticism towards the EU and the West rose. IMHO, very important to note.

Saying there is unconditional support for Kosovo within the EU is lying. Quite a few members don't recognize them.
But yeah, no, saying there was pro-EU sentiments in Serbia before that is lying. Western Europe bombed the country to the ground back in 1999, killing tens of thousands, if not more. Serbs rightfully hate us and our guts, and want to enter the EU to destroy us from within. Which is perfectly normal and understandable after our actions.

Thank you for talking about Serbia, but the video has some flaws that should be highlighted:
    1. Being between East and West for Serbia has way much deeper history and its not starting only with this leader. It has roots in Middle Age Serbia and even during Tito with Non-Aligned Movement.
    2. Democratic changes happened 2000 after Nato bombed Serbia and Albanian SELF-declared independence 2008 breaking UNSC RES 1244 (1999). Its disputed territory and not clear case like its shown here,
    3. Connection with Russia also comes from firm support of the issue of Kosovo, not just because cheaper gas and history,
    3. Besides China and Russia, severe influence in the region comes from Turkey, that is not mentioned here at all.

Correct observation, Serbia has received billions of Euros in non-returnable financial support from the EU and NATO countries in addition to the fact that Western companies have opened 500,000 new jobs in Serbia. Hundreds of thousands of Serbs have left Serbia and are now Serbs living in NATO countries and living wonderful lives there with a high standard of living. Serbia is pro-Putin for the same reason as Orban in Hungary, they do not want to integrate politically closer to the West because then all corruption and crime will be exposed by various Western institutions. In addition, ultra nationalists in Serbia still dream of expanding Serbia in various directions on the map, as their inspirer Putin is trying to do now. Letting Serbia into NATO and the EU is letting Putin's Trojan horse in, Serbia should be sanctioned by the EU but unfortunately France has too many pro-Putin and pro-Vucic people with political power.

not quite true. in here you have a lot of different interest spheres meddling. people per se want to be a part of EU because we are part of Europe. but they are literally holding us down with Kosovo. as long as its "independent" every so often, someone, and by someone i mean greater powers, will use it a bargaining chip. i had an idea for them to declare local autonomy, so we can all apply for EU without problems related to borders or whatever. but, as usual, the world wont be satisfied untill they completely destroy us. i cant speak for Schiptares, but i bet they would want something similar. after all, EU has no borders, so no problems there either. and maybe just maybe God damn world would stop exploating this poor region and people who try to live here. let me make this simplier...i like Russians, kindred. but our geopolitical and geographical space is in Europe. so im against going to briks. of course corrupted politicians have a lot to do with everything. imagine being held on standby and living like an animal for ages just because someone decided this is piece of land for tossing around. God forbids people here actually have a normal and decent life, at least couple of generations.

    • @Quickshot0
      @Quickshot0 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

It's probably because they basically don't border any dangerous powers. The West is powerful, but it never actually invades you so long as you only annoy them a lot. And being more distant from the autocratic powers, they probably can just get away ignoring them thus when ever they don't like the deal.
In which case rather then dancing on the knifes blade, it's more like easy mode and if they ever faced real adversity it might all come tumbling down.

    • @ghmhm5116

Only reason Serbia can do this is because Serbia and Balkan in general are not important to east or west. EU really ignores a lot of things that Serbia does. Goverment is quite autocratic, media is preaty much state controled, mafia is intermingled with everything. Serbian politicians destabilase all countries with a lot of serbs (Bosnia and Hercegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro).

      @paul1979uk2000 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

In a way yes, but that dancing act is holding Serbia back, after all, Serbia is in one of the best positions to join the EU and probably could have been a member by now, so that dancing act is holding back the economy, after all, Serbia is one of the poorest countries in Europe, that balancing act of playing all sides also means Serbia is being used by many of these sides for political gains.
Either way, the eastern EU countries and countries that want to join the EU will likely pull ahead of countries that play games.
So no, Serbia isn't playing this game smart, they are playing themselves, thinking they are playing the others, after all, China and Russia are using them to score points against the west, the US likely doesn't care about Serbia, but the EU, if Serbia becomes a member, would propel its economy that would have a big impact on living standards for all its citizens, so the one that's being played here is Serbia and I wonder how long it will take before they realise that, probably as other countries join the EU and there economy develops faster, or as the eastern EU countries continue to pull away from them in economic development.

Do you want to be a citizen or a peasant? That is the question I ask of people who can't decide between a democratic republic or a strongman government? If you like the decisiveness of a strongman government, then you want to be a peasant with no civil rights, you don't want the strongman to worry about your vote, as that is such an inconvenience when he is making decisions about whether to go to war or have peace! Italy has its own history with such strongmen. The question I ask is do you want the government to serve you, or do you want it to serve itself?
People in government, like Putin, want more power, if they are absolute ruler of a given country, they are still limited by that country's resources, even if they have no opposition in that country, in order to have more power, they have to go to war and conquer more people, they don't care about you in pursuing this objective, as far as they are concerned, you are only a tool they can use and expend to achieve what they want, they will draft you and send you off to war to achieve their military objectives, they don't care if you get killed just so you achieve their objective and take some land!
There is a movie out called Napoleon, Napoleon was the absolute ruler of France, but France was not enough, he wanted to be "Emperor or Europe", he wanted to be the new "Caesar", he wanted his empire and his place in the history books, and the French people were just his pawns to sacrifice in the giant chess board he called Europe. Napoleon wanted to win, and the people were his tools to achieve that victory! There is nothing admirable about Napoleon, he was a leader of the French Revolution and he turned it into an expedition to glorify himself by building an Empire, French people who thought they were fighting for their own freedom from tyranny ended up fighting to build Napoleon's empire instead!
People like Putin, and Hitler want to do Napoleon one better, they think they are smarter than Napoleon, they admire him, but they think they can point to the mistake he had made, and they can convince themselves that if they can only avoid that one mistake Napoleon made, they can accomplish what he achieve and yet not suffer his downfall, this is what I call Napoleonism, and it is a common affliction of many national leaders who are voted into office, and they find ways to remain in office by neutralizing public opinion so that it is no longer a threat to him. If you support a leader that wants to be Napoleon, you may find yourself in the trenches fighting and sacrificing you life to build his empire while he sits comfortable in some distant palace playing chess and admiring his own brilliance!

But it's a choice that Serbia or the ones at the top there can make. The West certainly won't gainsay them that, even if NATO pretty much surrounds Serbia. Unlike the authoritarians they give far more latitude in doing as one wants after all.

@@Quickshot0 No, this is not how they've been operating for much of their history. It's quite the opposite. In both WWI and WWII they were the bravest of allies and possibly the only people in Europe who took to the streets to protest against their government for signing a pact with Hitler. That's why Belgrade was bombed on April 6, 1941. The king had abdicated and left the country while a partisan war against the enemy was carried out in the streets, later also to actively defend and hide the Jews (Germans told me that). Serbian, Jewish and Romani people together were victims of the Holocaust and imprisoned in Jasenovac. Later on, Serbian (Yugoslavian) towns were bombed by the allies, targeting enemy troops and vehicles, with lots of civilian casualties. So, no, history is not black and white, Yugoslavia was a country of brave people proud of their history.

On 11 April 2018, the Appeals Chamber sentenced him to 10 years in prison under Counts 1, 10, and 11 of the indictment for instigating deportation, persecution (forcible displacement), and other inhumane acts (forcible transfer) as crimes against humanity due to his speech in Hrtkovci on 6 May 1992, in which he called for the expulsion of Croats from Vojvodina.

    Energy collapse
We will loose veto voice from Russia and China in UN and support in other organizations (Unesco, Oebs)
No more investments from China (heavy industry, roads, infrastructure etc.)
Turning back to Russia will result chaos and riots on the streets, goverment fall will be instantly

Why would you want investments from china in your critical infrastructure and industry? We don't know how this may go in the future, but the assumption in the west is that china will want something in return sooner or later, and it may not be only their invested money. All this while you guys are surrounded by the west that is neutral at best and opposed to china at worst. So what's the point? EU can do similar investments, and in worst case scenario also expect different types of return, but at least you are in line with countries around you, instead of some country on the other side of the globe. Maybe I'm missing something?
This also leads me to a question why do you need russia and china in the UN? Why not US and EU countries?

Because Us and Eu want independent Kosovo. As long as Russia and China are on our side, Kosovo will be never member of UN. China has their own Kosovo - Taiwan. If they support independent Kosovo, they will shoot in their leg. As same as Spain and Cyprus in Eu.
About China's investments - our steel factory was in hands of US Steel. After couple of years, they went out from Serbia and sold company for 1$. Nobody wanted it, because it had huge depths. Then came Chinesse, took it, made necessery investments and put the factory back in business. The same was with copper and gold mine, just it was previously in state hands. Both companies are now the biggest exports in Serbia. Why Chinesse build are highways and railways? Because their Exim bank give us 2% loan and Eu ans Us proposal was 6 or 7%. They build it in Eu standard and respecting Eu laws. Why we use Russian gas? Because we pay 400$ for 1000 cubics and Eu 4 or 5 times higher. When we made sanctions to Russia, we will pay that price and that's to high for our budget. Ironicly, 67% of all Western Balkans investments are in Serbia mostly from that Eu companies that want cheap gas. As you can see, everything is tight connected so you can't breake those connections so easily.

Note that I am from Greece , a NATO member country that has a lot of criticism for NATO's approach towards Turkey's 1974 invasion of Cyprus , their inaction over what is happening in the last few years in Armenia , its not like they are saints , there is legitimate criticism againt NATO , but dismissing the WHOLE alliance as a whole as exploitative and denying its defensive nature is counter-productive

If you looked at the history, Serbia has thrived when there were 2 or more great powers competing in the neighborhood that Serbia could balance between.
Rome vs Constantinople, Hungary vs Ottomans, Austria vs Ottomans, Austria vs Russia, NATO vs USSR. When one power becomes overwhelmingly dominant in the Balkans Serbia gets wiped off the map. So Vučić is playing the old game, but unfortunately for him Russia and China are far away and EU is NATO's playground.

No one in Serbia with more than two brain cells don't believe in any "European path of Serbia". 80% of Serbian population is against sanction to Russia and China. Automatically that is end for Serbian "European dream" . And investment in Serbia is big lie! Why do people outside of Serbia ever try to cover or comment Serbian politics. Like shit's so useless it might aswell not exist. For a starter Vucic didn't step down as the leader of SNS because of the unrest among civilian population but because the constitution doesn't allow him to be an active president and a party leader. Given that he did this just a few days ago that means that he was in constant violation of the constitution ever since he came to power. Secondly he didn't perfect jack shit, let alone a balancing act between east and west. The only thing he perfected was the act of corruption, media manipulation etc. We had the elections yesterday and one of my distant friends said that he voted for SNS, former Vucic party. When I asked him why he replied that his aunt got a job because she was a low tier member of the party. Let that fucking sink in...Imagine having to vote for a certain party just because you aunt happens to land a job with their help. And ofcourse this isn't only limited to one vote. That same aunt has a mother and a father. She probably also has kids. She might have some brothers and sisters. Her brothers and sisters might have some kids who have a right to vote. And the crazy thing is they are ALL OBLIGATED to vote for SNS...Just leave the Balkans alone, don't try to report on stuff you can't understand.

Anyone who wants to do business, enter into a bi-lateral partnership with Serbia or any sort of co-operation we are more then open to it and welcome it, no matter which country is on the other side of the proposal.
BUT, when we get into blackmail type of relations, threats, conditional benefits for us and unconditional for the other side, then we have a serious problem...
We are a sovereign nation and we will not be dictated to on what we 'must do', 'have to accept', ' must agree to' etc...To us, that is beyond unacceptable! If China is offering the best and fairest deals, that are not tied with 'you must do x' strings, then we will do business and partner with China, its that simple.
When China proposes anything to Serbia, it does not come alongside; 'You must accept that Kosovo is not serbian territory' ' You must adopt this ideology' 'You must teach this in your schools' 'You must promote this and not that...' China does not talk like that, while the U.S., Germany, UK, France do talk to us in that tone every single time!

Look at North Macedonia, and Montenegro, one even changed it country name, they both entered in Nato, but they can't join EU. EU is tolerating him only because he slowly delivers Kosovo independence, step by step. In Serbia he is portrayed as savior of Kosovo in Serbia, but in reality he is slowly boosting Kosovo independence. Only control Serbia has left in Kosovo is education and healthcare in northern Kosovo, he gave away everything else to Albanians. China is useful for Vucic because they don't care about how the money is spent, their companies will do the construction, Vucic will get his share by boosting project price and his companies will be subcontractors for Chinese companies. So if highway cost like 1 billion euros, they will make it cost 1.5 billion dollars, 1 billion will be spent on construction while the rest will end in Vucic pocket, and people of Serbia will be left with debt. Don't be fooled ether buy investors from UAE who are building Belgrade waterfront, they are portraying it as investment from UAE but the scam goes something like this. You get an eye for something valuable in possession of state of Serbia, then you go and find some idiot in UAE who create company on their name and you get your dirty money you stole from Serbia and put in bank account of that company. Then Vucic show on TV and says to people that there is this great investor from UAE who is willing to invest his money in thing they want to steal from Serbian people and that we should sell it for a cheaper price and that investor will invest much more money to develop that estate. Vucic is worse then the devil, he is having a team of people including Tony Blair, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Gerhard Schröder and many others including some top experts for psychology and marketing so he is constantly listening of pulse of people and adjusting his manipulation and zombification of people of Serbia. If you lived in Serbia for a month your brain would be fried if you read newspapers and watched TV. There are constant political talk shows where every Vucic move is portrayed as genius and greatest in history, that show last for about half a day on almost every tv station with national frequency, and in the mean time after you pause from watching News and Talk shows there are Reality tv shows full of whores, ex prisoners, and turbo folk singers. That's the whole point.
That is something that leaves me appalled.
USA doesn't care about Russian restrictions and sanctions, however Europe does.
We are crippling ourselves to please the USA and that's so mor*nic if you ask me.
Every country should first and foremost think about their own population. Doesn't matter "nobility" in 2023 when you have the highest index of homelessness and unemployment. I'm Italian and over 2.000.000 kids under the years of 12 are currently living UNDER poverty (so not even on the level of poverty) and cannot afford educational material for school and their parents cannot afford three full meals per day.
Meanwhile we want to dictate geopolitics? What the H.
I am not justifying the war in Ukraine, mind you, however I do find it hypocritical that people push for freedom in Kosovo while negating the same in Donbas and Crimea and negating the same to Palestine.
I guess that's what we are in the end, hypocrities.

@@clintwestwood3539 Its the USA. They are the ones who control the political and ideological narrative and propaganda in Europe. Europe didn't have much of an opinion about Kosovo until USA declared what that opinion is. EU countries don't have any interest in Kosovo whatsoever, but USA does. Same with middle east, the only ones who truly care about what happens there is USA and they care about their partner, Israel, the country that allows them to reach into the middle east and do whatever they want. Same with Donbas and Crimea. They don't want to give to Russia what they want, so they will gladly sacrifice whole Europe if needed just to show to Russia who is the boss. Serbia is suffering for not playing USA game, although we do have politicians who do listen from time to time their american bosses... Its just that there is a large part of population that is against USA dictating what we should do or not, so they have to move lightly. While in EU, its a little different, but the funny thing is that EU is also suffering, but for listening to USA. Basically whatever you do with that damn country you end up hurting yourself, its ridiculous. But i fear Russia is the same, and China is even worse, its just that they dont have that much influence in the west(for now), so we dont see it. Let them take the wheel and we might as well regret that as well. While there was always big super powers who wanted to control all the others, the reach that they have today thanks to the advancements in technology is INSANE and unfortunately no one is immune to propaganda, even if you try to be careful what information you read, you will end up being brainwashed one way or another. The one thing is for sure. EU could be way friendlier with Russia if it wasnt for USA. Unless Russia doesnt want to go full time insane and try to spread its borders, whole continent would have benefits. But as you said, first and foremost, each country should focus on their national interest. Its sad to hear about 2 million kids who are basically starving, never visited Italy, but i didnt know it was that bad. Hope that your people will start figuring out that they have been played, whole Europe needs to stop acting as a proxy of damn super powers, we always had enough of our own problems...

At least China, unlike the West, does not want to lend money to these corrupt little countries that it knows they will spend on nonsense and then charge them horrible interest rates that it knows they will not be able to repay.

I don't know about you, but this offer is far more humane, honest and good than what most western funders would do.

Many of us in Serbia harbor a strong desire for our country to join the European Union (EU). However, there exists a prevailing sentiment that the EU's support is directed towards a political party marred by pervasive corruption, diverting EU funds away from genuine reformative endeavors. Additionally, a noteworthy concern is the prevalence of individuals within the government who are remnants of the right-wing ideologies prominent in the 1990s, masquerading as EU-aligned politicians. Engaging with the EU feels arduous when our efforts seem overshadowed by a reliance on figures like Vucic, primarily as a means to address the Kosovo issue, as was envisioned during Merkel's tenure. The situation is distressing for the Serbian populace, feeling akin to hostages amid political tumult, perpetually trapped in a state of limbo. At the age of 26, the pervasive sentiment is one of stagnation, with an absence of transformative political and societal changes. We yearn for recognition akin to other Balkan nations and fervently advocate for the amplification of youthful voices and alternative political parties. A reevaluation of the EU's affiliations is imperative if substantive progress is to be witnessed in their direction.

I imagine the EU also doesn't really know what to do. In the end it's not an organization really meant to change who runs countries. As can be seen in even anti-EU leaders at times having power in EU countries.
So they probably feel chained to having to watch and trying to provide some incentives to perhaps change course... But if the power structures in that country don't want to bite, not sure how much they can really do further.
In that sense it's probably for a large part an internal Serbian matter to decide... assuming the general population gets much say in that I guess.

It is a mix of marriage of convenience, some historical ties (also forged in convenience), an adverse opinion against sanctions against common citizens and the understanding that without Russia (and China), Serbia loses geopolitically.
Serbs have a better opinion about Russia than the rest of EU citizens and some extremist political/religious/social groups voice it out loud. But 1) Belgraders are not in love of many Russian expats, especially from Moscow region (the ones from St Petersburg are more welcomed), 2) the biggest manifestation that I saw in Belgrade was pro-Ukraine, not pro-Russia and 3) local business people are more comfortable dealing with EU companies than with Russians and 4) Serbians never look to Russia when deciding to live and work in another country.
