Quick correction here, Vovchansk is a town of 18 000 people. Only 3000 people evacuated yes but that's not the whole town's population, it's not even close. And a lot of the villages captured had no time to evacuate at all.
You'll be expecting the presenter to pronounce Carkey'vv correctly next... ; )
(Report also says nothing about the reason for Russia "just walking in" is that Ukraine had to build the defences several miles back since they were being attacked when they tried to do so on the border.)
Most people have already left before. Vovchansk was already occupied in February 2022, and then liberated in September that year
theres no way it had 18 000 by may 10th , it already seen fighting earlier in the war and has been shelled since liberation in 2022
a lot of them are russians waiting for the liberation.
Shows the incompetence of Ukrainian commanders, the money that were supposed to be spent on the defence line were stolen the very moment they reached ukrainian thieving government
Well this comment section is gonna be a mess. Surprised Russia opened it now rather than earlier, it’s gonna be a tough time for Ukraine still.
really? that is some news. maybe you can explain why russia retreated before from this area when they where in control in the start of the war with 1000 times the equipment. is there a reason for that? use your brain and think, you can do it.
@Lavithz What are you saying? That the whole war was orchestrated by the sith, playing both sides against eachother?
Russia has faster access to armaments at the moment so they might have just been keeping the Ukraine front spread thin while waiting for their supplies to run out, until the bulk of available equipment was stuck in logistics. (It takes a long time for those American bucks to reach the front)
Can't say for sure, but that's my thought on it at least.
@@Lavithz i'm soo confused by the phrasing of this comment..
When Russia evacuated Kharkiv they still had less than 180k soldiers to guard a 1000km front..
and 30k had were still retreating from Kherson...
in the kharkiv area there were apparently less than 2k russian soldiers with no defensive lines at all.
Kiev moved in with at least 10k soldiers (by kiev numbers).. of course the russian retreated to better defensive position, and they actually performed an excellent withdrawth saving more than 95% of personnel and equipment..
But the west gotta propagandise
1. Russia didn't open anything. This is a UK 2017 cast.
2. Why Russia retreated from Kharkiv?: well, look at what's left of the Ukrainian army to get the answer you're looking for...
All this money on defense spending and research but by the end we've gone right back to WW1 era trench warfare
Ukraine and Russia are not the countries that have been spending significant amounts of money on military R&D. Ukraine simply doesn’t have the money to design next gen tanks, fighters, or artillery systems and Russia has too much corruption to make any serious headway as the ARMATA shows. Plus Russian military doctrine actually prefers what is happening since First World War style fronts are simpler and easier to manager when you have a large force of unmotivated conscripts who received light training and minimal equipment. Innovating the way that western countries do with their equipment would actually go against the way that Russia likes to fight wars.
Western countires power in not in m 16 apache f22 bal bla leopard 2 .... western power is in their influence of surrounding and isolate enemy countires and power of world bank (sanction) wich simply destroy enemy economy and cant support their military in battle . You dont understand how war works and dont write crap vietnam war is good example where vietnam economy cant colaps becuse of soviet support and military support and of course usa will lose.
drone tech has given frontline units unmatched visibility of the battlefield supported with accurate artillery and of course more drones. Large formations preparing for an attack would get hit before it entered the battle so trench warfare and small assault units is how this war is being fought. Modern weaponry is very accurate and with a high lethality.
@@CyrilSneer123 surveillance drones are just WWI blimps but modern. bomb/ing drones are a more modern thing but not very far from trench strafers
Modern warfare is kind of insane because never before have both sides been able to have such total visibility of the enemy. It's like playing an RTS game online with fog of war turned off and the enemies all lit up with icons. Oh and the cameras making this possible have fucking bombs attached to them so that's like playing with cheats where you can just click to create an explosion.
"Most analysts are skeptical". Bro all of those analysts were wrong and continue to spout shit while Ukrainian people die...
They've been more right than the media - most analysts were more reserved in their hype for Ukraine's 2023 counteroffensive than the media and quicker to say that it wasn't going as planned. But their biggest mistakes happened right at the beginning of the war, when they drastically underestimated how long Ukraine would hold out.
TAIWANESE Lives Matter 🇹🇼💯
@@Talisguythey were also wrong about Ukrainians Kharkiv offensive, no one thought it would come so soon or happy in the Kharkiv region. It seems analysts just don’t know war.
@@BrightWendigoIn my language anal means anal, while "liz(s)" means lick. That gives you a pretty good idea about what analysts do.
Well, maybe it's hard for modern man to acknowledge, but warfare is too much complex to really be analysed and predicted with any meaningful scope. Warfare is something that i shaped every day by milions of decision of hundred thousands of people who engage in it, not only that, it's also shaped by things like weather, germs and other unpredictable stuff.
We are building supercomputers in order to create very complex weather models, but even the most advanced tech that we have can only predict with some kind of certainty 40 hours of weather in small area. How we can think that any "expert" that sit behind the table in some office can really predict outcome of things as diverse and multi faceted as military offensive?
In Waterloo Napoleon send cavalary to took artilery and destroy it. Soldiers took those positions, but then they couldn't destroy Cannons. Why? Because those of them who had special nails that are used to quickly destroy cannons were those who were killed during cavalry charge. Who could predict that? No one really. But this small nuance changed everything in this battle.

Its not clear that there are fortifications in Vovchansk. Its likely that the river that runs through the middle of Vovchansk will become the front line with Russia on the north side and Ukraine on the south. The Russians may well be able to progress further south before they encounter constructed defenses. The big question is how many troops and vehicles they sacrifice to advance.
Technical point of order, when talking about positions along rivers, the "proper" nomenclature is not to use directions but rather to use the terms right or left bank, referring to the point of view of the river itself looking in the direction that water is flowing towards. So assuming you're talking about the Vovcha River that runs right through the middle of the town and connects with the Donets River, the Russian position would be on the "right bank" (north side in this specific area) and the Ukranians would hold the "left bank" (south side); since rivers meander, it can make north/south/east/west hard to rely on in, depending on particular geography
Pretty sure even with advancing Ukrainians lose twice as more.
There are many people even in the Ukranian side saying the constructed defenses never happened and corruption may have occured.
@homijbhabha8860 I don't think its corruption, I think its misunderstanding. Borders are rarely fortified and anyone garrisoned near the border would likely be forward of any air defense whatsoever. They'd be a sitting duck. The defensive lines are further back for good reason.
I doubt that the fortifications will work. I came across a post of an Ukranian defensive line,it wasnt even a fence. Worse, even Ukranians said that the fortifications wont do anything and that Kharkov is gone. But that is just my opinion🤷
Thank you very much!

Chasiv Yar is the most worrying part. This is to, as the video states, to spread Ukraine's forces.
Western support is still extremely lacking, making me wonder if they actually want Ukraine to win. Them just needing simple artillery shells and not getting it baffles me.
The whole offensive (the one we saw a while back) was a failure for several reasons, but one big issue is western countries almost force them to have another offensive like they had before with the new gear. Almost like to show off, forcing them to do dumb decisions.
Not to mention the rules not to attack into Russia itself limits them insanely.
The Republicans certainly aren't committed to a Ukrainian victory. They've been openly and proudly obstructionist for some time now. And since US aid is so much of western aid for Ukraine...

They have around 50k troops around the Kharkiv/Sumy regions, there's no way in hell that the plan is to take a massive city with such low numbers. Keep in mind that they had around 40k troops around Avdiivka when they took that city, and that's tiny compared to Kharkiv.
So yes, this is 100% about creating a buffer zone aswell as forcing Ukraine to send a bunch of much needed manpower there from the eastern front.
Nope - the Russians are just conducting reconnaissance at this stage - and are encountering very weak resistance! Ukraine is done. Stick a fork in it. Russia will have won by September take that to the bank.
Avdiivka was 15x more fortified, officially had 25.000 defending troops. Kharkov isn't nearly as fortified and RU don't even need to try to capture it. How are you going to mention the new front and not mention that strategically, if Russia is sucessful on this front they could collapse the whole ukrainan donetsk and luhansk fronts. Those areas are where Ukraine has its best defenses too. By forcing a ukrainian retreat from donbass Russia will achieve one its biggest goals of the war! This is also not a small amount of territory they've just captured. Over 200 square kilometers were captured in a weekend this is incredible considering at other times in the war sucess was measured in square meters per week. Also Russia very much does want karkov. It's not far from the border and if Ukraine doesn't divert significant forces they could lose it. We've been hearing for 8 months Ukraine is suffering severe troop shortages and We've seen major blunders on the battlefield especially in donetsk where ukrainans had to retreat due to lack of manpower or where miscommunication and lack of discipline saw huge holes open the front and the Russians make major advances over what was supposed to be hard defense. The attack on karkov does not mean Russia wants "all of ukraine". I think Russia would rather settle for half of ukraine and this recent move toward karkov is something Russians have always known they would need to do.
Russia wants all of Ukraine, point blank. They mentioned that this country isn't supposed to exist. After Ukraine it will be belarus joining russia, then moldova, then georgia, then the baltics...
It wants Kharkov but I'm not sure it wants it right now. Russia want to cause headaches for Ukraine by stretching them even thinner with a new front opening. They also want a buffer zone to nullify further attacks on Belgorod. If successful and the Ukrainians are seen to be struggling then that buffer zone could provide the springboard for an encirclement of Khakiv provided considerably more manpower is added to the new front. I don't think we will see any attack on Kharkiv this year but I could be wrong.
@CyrilSneer123 I think if ukrainans defense continues to crumble we could see karkov lost this year
Kharkiv*
Also. Russian taking Donetsk after 2+ years would be a major victory for the Ukrainians. As nobody before the war expected anything. If ukraine can limit it to just the current gains +donetsk Ukraine got a way better deal than anyone expected in 2022.
@RK-cj4oc karkov. The Russians will rename it. A victory would be Ukraine negotiating in 2022 and saving hundreds of thousands of lives and billions of dollars in property and maintaining good relations between nato and russia. Now all that is lost and for what? So Russia can get even more than they were asking in 2022? "They held off two years". That doesn't count for much when the outcome is the same.

The timing of this offensive is strange. Considering that the best time for the Russians to launch one was a few weeks ago, when the Yanks were wrangling around in their Congress over whether to pass military aid to Ukraine or not.
Either way, I hate to say this. If the next US president is a Republican, then Ukraine should seriously consider the unthinkable: negotiating with Russia simply because there will be no more military aid for them.
The offensive may have sped up the passing of the aid. It wasn't a certainty, either. And it's not like the effects of that aid will magically appear overnight - it'll take time. Makes sense to me.
Maybe they where planing to lauch the offensive later, but launched it early bc of the American aid package
It's happening soon after the inauguration, rather than before it. As cynical as it sounds, it's not out of the area of possibility that timing is about internal reconsolidation of power.
They basically had Orthodox Easter and Victory Day so they waited the holidays to pass then start the offensive.
The timing of the offensive might just depend on when the ground had dried up and hardened.
Ukraine has a very very big problem with mobilization. That is why they are trying to put at least 20.000 prisoniers on front. Maybe Zelensky is waiting for Switzerland summit peace just to ask nato to get involved. 😅

If russia is willing to cause this over Kyiv while being the aggressor. We should be equally willing to do it for our brothers in Ukraine who are in the trenches.
In some fantasy land. If russia was to put down its weapons today. Russia would continue to exist. As nobody in the west wants some needless conflict.
