Here's some things to hopefully clear things up: Pachi-Pachi was meant to be a secret fight in the Dice Palace, once you beat all 9 of the mini bosses, and Pachi-Pachi would take up the Start Over space. He was cut for being too simular to Pirouletta. The Grim Reaper was meant to be a secret fight in the base game, once you stay in a fight or level for too long, the reaper would spawn in, and you have to deal with him in top of the boss you were fighting before hand. The Reaper's code and movement pattern was reused for the Bishop in the DLC. And incase your wondering, Pachi-Pachi's info was given in the Japanese physical release of the game complete with even more concept art, and the Reaper's info was given in a behind the scenes video when making the King of Games' stages.
@@TheRealSuperKirby I wish! Nah, I just follow everything I can about the game. I bought the Japan version of the game, and I watch almost every interview, which is how I got those two nuggets of information.
Speaking of the unused Cala Maria attack unused animation, apparently the blue fish can still be loaded into the game, but it's projectile got removed thus making the squeeze animation loop go on forever.
I love when game companies do this, not only is it fascinating but it also makes you appreciate the amount of effort it takes to make a game like this Really hope they're working on a cuphead 2 that uses some of these scrapped characters!
I really love mugman’s and cuphead’s intro concepts! They really show off more of their personalities than it does in the base game! Also give both of these characters a child like innocence since they literally fighting for their lives!
I totally agree! I always imagined them being around sixteen or maybe younger because (at least according to my brother as I’m not sixteen yet) ‘You feel like you can do anything once you turn sixteen’. I dunno, just a personal headcanon.
Cuphead really is just THAT game, man. I'm so glad they stuck with this idea and made it a reality because all of this hard work definitely DID pay off.
23:37 the Cuphead and Mugman winning animation really reminds me of the Sonic 2 intro pose with Sonic and Tails I wouldn't be surprised if they did it as a reference or a "homage" to the Sonic hedgehog 2.
17:36 the “watermelon bread slice” is a reference to Melon Bread; a mini boss from Gunstar Heroes. The whole King Dice mini boss rush thing was inspired by the dice fortress stage in Gunstar Heroes, where you’d throw a die to move along a board, and have to fight mini bosses based on where iou landed. One of the bosses was Melon Bread, a weird figure that was basically just a floating set of eyes and teeth that almost never attacked, and made that face. Studio MDHR was considering ideas to reference Melon Bread in their version of the dice fortress, and those sketches appear to be various ideas for that. The watermelon bread being an idea to make the boss *literally* melon bread. Ultimately, they used that face on an 8-ball and named it “mangosteen”; another out-of-place name related to a fruit.
I was gonna say this! the concept art is literally melon bread, but if you want stretch this further, Mangosteen closely resembles Jampan from alien soldier , main difference being that he has a body
16:36 The animation we got in the final game is similar, but possibly makes even less sense. Instead of the snake hair opening her eyes for it, two of the snakes loop around to the back of her head, and go through it to hold her eyes out. Yes, the purple things her eyes come out attached to are the snakes. Just throwing that out there for anyone who hadn't noticed it.
23:37 NO WAY!! That's a reference to the title screen of Sonic 2! That would have been so cool to see in the game, it's a shame it was scrapped but it did seem very early on in development
I think the unused salt baker design where he “ looks like a fox” is a reference to the original three little pigs story where they boil the wolf in a cauldron.
All of these things are so cool to see. I’m a sucker for these concept art pieces so I’m glad we were given the chance to see more of these concept sketches!
I think it’d be cool if every boss had their own special gameplay mechanic exclusive to their boss fight like the devil’s scrapped phase one where you climb the chair, it’d definitely increase the difficulty of the game and make it feel less repetitive Happy 10 years dude! 🎉
Not gonna lie, I’m kinda sad that stuff the Coin Op Bop, Pachi Pachi, Beetrice Lutz, Jelly the Octopus (Airship Boss), etc. weren't shown as much as some would want to see (especially Beetrice Lutz). Although what we got was so much, I still wish there was more. Seeing more concept art/animation for Beetrice Lutz especially would have made me happy, but at least we got stuff that answered a few questions. Your videos are amazing Tetra, and I'm glad to see this video especially! Thanks for the enjoyment you've brought to us all!
4:28, I don't think Mugman is blowing a bubble, rather his nose from what appears that his nose is gone in the x of where his nose would be (seen at 4:35)
17:32 This is indeed the 8-Ball mini boss. I guess the slice was drawn as a joke because the original boss' name it's based on is Melon Bread from Gunstar Heroes
9:50 I think they placed Plant Boi, Calamaria and the fantom express guy not has mini boss or goons of king dice but maybe more as a rematch, you fight them when as one faze only with their attacks and patterns changed. And maybe it was considered to have the kingdice fight as something like that just a rematch with a bunch of bosses. that's a big speculation but could have been cool
My theory for why plant boi and Cala Maria are on the wheel depicted in one of the early designs for king dice’s fight is they would be refights considering one of the phantom express phases is seen nearby
Watermelon Bread slice may have been inspired by Melon Bread from Gunstar Heroes on the Genesis, considering both bosses contain wide smiles, a dot for a nose and 2 gaping eyes
The King Dice layout of the board takes strong inspiration from Gunstar Heroes. Especially in the first sketches where the board looks exactly like the One used in that game.
Fun Fact - Mugman loves airplanes and stuff related to flying. Don't believe in me? In the book "Carnival Chaos",multiple times Mugman is refered to love planes,so much so he uses a baby airplane from an atraction on the fair to save his brother and Ms. Chalice from a bunch of bosses trying to catch them and in "A mountain of trouble", in the first pages, Cuphead is dreaming on going to a summer camp, where he dreams his brother flying along side chickens. When i saw the "Mugman playing with a toy airplane",my mind just automatically went to Mugsy's love for flying in the books. It would have been cool to see that on the game or in the series, maybe with an animation of Cuphead fearing flying an airplane due to fear of heights while his brother is just going plane crazy on finally flying.
I originally had an idea of some of the match ready animations being unused idle animations. But i guess you wouldn’t be idle for longer than 5 seconds in this game.
24:14 Oh my god The earliest boss footage/screenshot of that bat boss was actually a separate enemy All this time I speculated it was a scrapped phase in the Devil battle
There was a small panphlet included in the Japanese SUPERDELUXE edition of the game talking a little bit more about Patchi Patchi. Just in case you didn't know about it.
12:52 maybe instead of chef saltbaker being small he just shrunk you down in the 2nd phase after fighting you at normal size. Bro would have been unique to the other bosses by being a regular sized boss though they probably changed that due to his size and the hitbox would probably be a bit small. Just a theory.
10:09 I think those 2 and the ghost from the 1st phase of the train fight would've been rematches against them, but they were scrapped in exchange for the casino fights.
8:429:26 I think these are supposed to be the cards King Dice throws at you, when his boss phase starts. Or maybe not? And the cards he uses is based on the cut boss?
the concept of us playing as cuphead and mugman playing cuphead and mugman in coinop bop is such a cool idea i wish we could get something like that in the future!
