- A Beginners Guide to Static Grass application for model railroads displays, and dioramas. We show several techniques and products for applying static grass to your model railroad. Featuring the War World static grass applicator and static grass, plus products from Noch and Army Painter. Our application is an HO model railroad, but will work well for N scale or larger scales such as O and G. Easy to do, with a couple of surprises along the way.
Isn't it great to have a wife that not only supports your hobby, but enjoys it with you.
Absolutely true. On our second date, I said "I have a confession: I like trains". She said "Oh, that's OK". Here we are 55 years later doing this!
I had to chuckle when you talked about reading the directions. It's something I rarely do, unless forced into it. But, my husband always reads the directions.
Great, helpful video. Thank you.
You never know when the direction can have some REALLY important tips to keep you from waking up dead! Glad you liked the video!
Great tips, I didn't know that it could effect my pacemaker. Cool vacuum. Neat technique for tufts. Really enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing....Wilmer
Glad it was helpful! Just repeating what was in the instructions! Keep up the good work.
Holy Moly Don. Great to see you again if only by video. Thanks for the lesson which was sorely needed on static grass. Miss the store>
Glad you enjoyed it! I too miss the people of the store more than anything.
I miss the store and the people as well as the people.
Nice work and a superb layout....Jim
Thanks for the kind comments. I will try to earn more!
I'm not sure if you know or not but WWS has a TH-cam channel and the owner has been demonstrating how to do static grass the last several videos hes put out. The channel name is WWSCENICS here on TH-cam. They have three different size grass applicators and different size screens for them. You have done a great job on demonstrating how the static grass application works. Nice video. Stay well. -Wil 👍
Really good to know. I must check it out and see how badly I screwed up! Really, all sources of information are appreciated. Thank you for your kind comments!
Good tips. I'll be making my own tufts soon.
Happy that this was of some help. The tufts are easy, and the sizes and shapes can be random and still be useful.
I wish I had seen this before I attempted it myself.
Yeah. Me too. Seriously, a few tips (which I got from others) make a big difference. It's really quite easy with the right stuff.
Great stuff! I'm gonna try it. What size mesh do you recommend for the revision you made? Thanx! BTW, I lived in Tampa from 1959-1966 and 1972-1977. I seem to recall visiting your shop. Where you on Hillsborough Ave. for a time?
This is a link to the product I used:

We were on Church street for 20 years, and the store faced Hillsborough Avenue. Moved to Waters Avenue in 1993, and sold the store retired in 2003. Now I'm just a model railroader!
@@HappyHoboTrains Yeah I'm sure I was there. Great shop. I lived in Town n' Country from '72-'77 (stationed at MacDill for my last couple years). I miss it. Visited again in 2014 and couldn't believe how things had grown! When I was there the west side kinda ended at Sheldon road, now it seems to go all the way to the Gulf! Thanx for doing your channel.
@@mikeychris1989 And thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Awesome show
Glad you enjoyed it, and thank you for watching!
Great job guys, love the teamwork. That vacuum what kind is it please so I can get one.
hank you very much. The little vacuum is one I got from Amazon. Search their description: Keyboard Vacuums Cleaner, KeepTpeeK Portable Mini Electric Vacuum Cleaner
Great guide and Thankyou for sharing. I went for basket liner ..quicker and easier ..just need to give it a trim occasionally.
One of the great things about model railroading is that there so many ways to create your miniature world. Thanks for your comments!
Is basket liner different from "Pot Toppers" that are sold in craft stores? I have also used those from time to time.
Happy Hobo Trains not to sure if you look at my layout you can see it. There's different types some are suitable, some just wouldn't look right.
What are the details to order the vacuum on Amazon?
Amazon calls it "Keyboard Vacuums Cleaner". www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RXFB4BT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Excellent info!! Don wonder if I could ask your opinion. Correct me if I am wrong... Looks like you are using Atlas track and turnouts, what is your experience with them? Any major issues? Do you recommend them? Thanks!!
I have used a mix of Atlas, Walthers Shinohara, and Peco turnouts, and Walthers flex track, all code 83. I have had the best overall experience with Atlas and Walthers, though each have their own quirks. I am not a Peco fan, as they work fine when new, but over time tend to develop electrical problems with their built in jumpers. Maybe something to do with my ballast cement? Walthers and Atlas are not flawless either, and I have also had open jumper issues with them as well but usually are good out of the box or not. Once installed, no big failures. I am planning a video on the subject in the future, to show what to look out for. All benefit from certain tweaks.
Thanks so much Don. Very helpful!!
My answer above is not completely correct. My flex track is Atlas code 83, not Walthers. All else correct. Sorry, don't know what caused me to do that!
Thanks-great job- guess I need to buy an applicator. Question how did you do your roads?
Roads were made with Durham's Watter Putty, and the asphalt ones surfaced with a texture paint that I got at Lowe's, which unfortunately is no longer available. The stuff they sell now is way too coarse. I believe Woodland Scenics has a good alternative to the Durham's, though I've not tried it. Thanks for watching!
Thank you-Looking forward to your next video. My wife also does a lot of my scenery
