This song is the sound of Brisbane on a summers afternoon in the 1980s. Heat rising all day and then the afternoon storm would roll in, with the rain cooling things off. Sat on the decks of old Queenslanders in Paddington listening to this on those very same afternoons. We never knew what we had back then.

So true, Brissy in 80s with the late arvo rain too cool down for the night .use to sleep on the verandah ,no air con or crime. Loved those days

I'm just a lowly American, but I found this song on a Beggar's Banquet compilation CD in a used record store in the '90s, and without any geopolitical context whatsoever, the Go-Betweens became -- and forever will be -- one of my very favorite bands. I own everything they have ever produced. Their sound is timeless.

      J. Craig Anderson A ridiculous cover of this song was used as an ongoing promotional theme for GWN (A rural Western Australian Television Network). They cut the "batters wives" section out. Whoever was responsible for that one is a cultural criminal.

First day in Sydney all those years ago as a young English backpacker!!! Airport straight to the harbour !! And rode a red rattler over Sydney harbour bridge. No health and safety with the doors wide open, head peering out onto the beautiful harbour below on a stinking hot summer day in January. This was the first indigenous Aussie song I'd ever heard just a little later that day blaring out somewhere in down town Sydney. I always give it a play every now and then just to reminisce .. Thanks .

Saw them in a small club in Scottsdale, Az in late 88, maybe early 89. Probably 50 people there. I couldn't believe in a city the size of Phoenix, even back then, more people didn't show up for this fine band. So intimate, it was perfection.

Round and round, up and down
Through the streets of your town
    Everyday I, make my way
Through the streets of your town
And don't the sun look good today
But the rain is on its way
Watch the butcher shine his knives
And this town is full of battered wives
Round and round, up and down
Through the streets of your town
    Everyday I, make my way
Through the streets of your town
And I ride your river under the bridge
And I take your boat out to the reach
'Cause I love that engine roar
But I still don't know what I'm here for
Round and round, up and down
Through the streets of your town
    Everyday I, make my way
Through the streets of your town
    They shut it down
    They closed it down
    They shut it down
    They pulled it down
    ...............
Round and round, up and down
Through the streets of your town
    Everyday I, make my way
Through the streets of your town
Round and round, up and down
Through the streets of your town
    Everyday I, make my way
Through the streets of your town
Round and round, up and down
Through the streets of your town
    Everyday I, make my way
Through the streets of your town

Amazing song-Of course I've discovered it after poor Grant is gone (earlier viewed a video about 80's pop stars who are gone which led me here). Here in the US we were deprived of some great Aussie talent like the Go Betweens and Lighthouse Family. I love the way the melody of the gal follows Grant's vocals. RIP Grant.

Just seen the drummer on a advert on tv. Had to race here and relive this song.
