Heard this song flying into Melbourne on Qantas, and spent my trip looking for this CD....finally found it and now playing it for my friends in Gooding, Idaho, USA.
It is just achingly beautiful. I know a couple of GB fans who aren't keen on this track, for it's 'light, poppyness' They're wrong, it's magnificent. R.I.P. Grant
I accidentally stumbled across this song! Never heard of this song nor was it ever played on USA radio back in the 80s but this is a very nice tune! I wonder why it never got airplay in the USA! I believe it would have been a hit. But, nobody knows how the politics in the music business works!
I only heard the opening guitar played incidentally, very briefly, in the background of a movie called The Black Balloon and was instantly attracted to it. A testament to how wonderful this song is through and through. Love it. Shiiiiiiine.
How the hell was this not a hit here in the UK it's amazing, I have the LTD 7 inch Box set edition with badge, picture sleeve and a 7"x7" street map of Sydney's King Cross area with a note: "Dear Banquet, we all, well most of us, live somewhere on this map. You guess where. Johnny", and would never ever get rid of it.
Still Superbly beautiful, all these years later, and is the most classic of Australian all time classics along with 'Under the Milky Way' and 'Sounds of Then'
I used to go to the Sun theatre in the early 50's for the best & noisiest kids' matinees with a great intermission singalong, anyway what a smooth Qld sounding song, you can feel the warmth & canefields.
Wonderful song. Beautiful video. So sad that the writer/singer Grant McLennan passed away a couple of years ago from heart failure at his home in Brisbane.
@instantkiwiz Streets of your town written by Grant McLennan from Brisbane Indie band The Go Betweens. The clip shows the old Sun theatre which still exists in Yarraville in Melbourne. I fail to see any connection with New Zealand other than the song was very popular there when it was released. The Go Betweens are revered in Aussie rock history, RIP Grant.
I remember watching this video on 120 Minutes on MTV on Sunday Nights. This song brings back good memories of my stepbrother and i chilling on The North Side of Chicago.
Found this song through milkys just the way you are which has a sample of that catchy guitar riff from this, amazing song this. Who ever invented music was a genius becuase each genre I discover and its getting more is just all amazing Long live music
Poxa que musica suave e reflexiva!! Muito bonita, já ouvi numa rádio adulta aqui no Rio de janeiro mas não sabia identificar, não sabia que era "The Go Betweens"
Raimundo Vieira tb me amarro. Ela toca sempre na antena 1 Light fm 103.7 aqui no RJ. Sou do RJ e curto demais essa música. Tive q pesquisar o achar. Uma pena q nem todos gostam desse tipo de música. Um clássico dos anos 80. Amo rock australiano antigo igual a esse. Eu viajo.
Watching a SKY movie yesterday (Motherhood) and this track was heard...... ~COMPETITION TIME~ Which dance track sampled a piece of this several years ago.
I'm kinda pissed I've been watching the old, grainy version of this video for years and here's a nice, pristine hi-def copy. And there's even a completely different, "original" version video. Damn.
I am not sure whether Phoenix (the band) are aware of this song, but I would not be surprised if Phoenix said this song influenced their sound. Very Phoenix-sounding to me. In particular, I find that the song One Time Too Many by Phoenix has similarities to this lovely tune.
Amanda looking very cute in this clip. Milky Just the way you are. The girl in that is so hot! This band is so freakin' awesome - no wonder they named a bridge after them.
It really does not get much better than this. pity the bridge named after them is a toll bridge. Stops me using it.'GBB' on the road near Lang Park means 'Go Betweens Bridge'. Nothing more to say really.
We need to hear more of our local bands as they're far more superior to some of the crap that we hear that has been imported, remember I said some. Some Australian bands are crap as well but I'd still rather hear crap Australian bands than some of the crap that is release here and played that is from overseas. :) :) :)
16 Lovers Lane is a great album from an Australian treasure of a band, never really big band in the states but this yank loves them.
Heard this song flying into Melbourne on Qantas, and spent my trip looking for this CD....finally found it and now playing it for my friends in Gooding, Idaho, USA.

underrated, unappreciated band--so wonderful. Very much ahead of their time.
sheer class! 'dont the sun look good today, but the rain is on its way'
It is just achingly beautiful. I know a couple of GB fans who aren't keen on this track, for it's 'light, poppyness' They're wrong, it's magnificent. R.I.P. Grant
What I wanted from the GBs WAS pop.

One of the best songs to come out of the Australian music scene
Wonderful song. Beautiful video. So sad that the writer/singer Grant McLennan passed away a couple of years ago from heart failure at his home in Brisbane.

Used to have this song as my alarm to wake up in the morning, such a peaceful song.
Heart-breakingly beautiful. Original rural music a million miles away from the conventions and cliches of US country.

A true classic from the 80s.
Gosh, Grant (RIP) was always looking to write the "perfect pop song".
I think he may well have succeeded with this...
Thanks heaps for posting.

(I had originally recorded the version that jteglund uploaded)
And it features the former Rainbow and Districts Civic Centre... which is now The Mecca at 13 Federal Street, Rainbow. Been there too!
Without question the most grossly under-rated pop song of all time
jeez thats good!...
one of my favorite songs... :)

@Breatherable Think of an island - a fairly large one - that's west of New Zealand. ;-)
I'm kinda pissed I've been watching the old, grainy version of this video for years and here's a nice, pristine hi-def copy.

Someone will get points if they tell me the song that the acoustic guitar riff at the beginning was used in. It's a somewhat known one from 2002. :)

Which dance track sampled this a few years back ????
My desert island song.

Milky Just the way you are. The girl in that is so hot!
Unfair.. McAloon wrote Bonny, Appetite and When Love Breaks down.
This is a beautiful song though. I love The Go Betweens.

Whatever happened to fun, lyrical music such as this? Music today is just pathetic.
But I still don't know what I'm here for.
Is this Christian music?
Singer looks like Paul Newman
Pure Kiwi Gold right there
1:15 - 1:22 = :)
The 80s version of Penny Lane...
Blijft een mooi nummer. Ook al word ik er altijd een beetje triest van.
2018 and still loving our Aussie Tuneage xxxx
