2022 here, I came to say that this song is still one of the most beautiful ever written, and it should be FAR more known than it is. Actually no, I take that back. I like it the way it is, one of my little secret songs that I’ll listen to till that day when I’ll finally head to the clearing at the end of the path. Until then, this song will remain close to my heart.
Yes, with the current state of the music industry for the most part, being able to go back and listen to these beautiful and well written songs is just a joy....
Nice
I didn't notice that there are no drums until now, it just flows so perfectly.
Dang you are right
This has been one of my favorite songs for decades and I have never noticed there are no drums
I love how his voice goes up when he says "like" in this line:
"but your memory is here and I'd like it to stay."
He sounds so sad, but I love it.
I always loved this song growing up, but it hits extra hard once you've had some life experiences that kind of mirror the sentiment of the song in some way.
damn.
My first boyfriend introduced me to this song...To me it's all the feelings of first love, feeling "understood", heartache...Somehow listening to this song feels like listening to my life lol. Deep.
the best part of the song is definalty 2:00 till 2:46. I abselutely LOVE James Mercer's voice. This song is perfection.
I really didn't plan on a paper cow making me cry tonight
same
Does anyone ever think a paper cow will make them cry? Gosh, me too. I'm glad I'm alone right now. Thank God for The Shins.
For godsake I'm genuinely tearing up
It makes absolutely no sense. Why is this video so crushingly depressing?
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one
Two days ago I had an lecture with Adam Bizanski, the animator of this clip.
He's a great man, he did this clip just for fun(and didn't made the last verse), he asked his friend who went to their concert at a CD store to give them the CD.
Two months later they sent him an e-mail that they loved the clip and asked him what those he want for this clip(+ last verse), he didn't know what to say, so he said: "mmm 500$?",
the said yes haha :)
This song makes me come incredibly close to crying every time I listen to it.
I almost never cry at anything.
I love this song :D People SHOULD be listening to this. Its better for your soul
As canções do The Shins são maravilhosas. Trazem uma leveza que a música sempre deveria trazer. O vocalista tem um timbre muito especial e o seu jeito de cantar atrai. Enfim, The Shins traz um universo musical novo onde é prazeroso viver.
my fav song of the awesome band, shins. beautiful.
For years I've had the '60's, '70's and a bit of the '80's on something of a loop. So refreshing to have somer newer, great musicians to get into. James Mercer's voice is superb. Discovered Broken Bells first and checked the band members’ music further. The cows add to this (I think), it's just lovely. Thanks for sharing.
Listen to Daniel Rossen -- he channels George Harrison like you wouldn't believe.
Band of Horses!
This song I hold really close to my heart. Reminds me of the time I spent ages one rainy day making 2 cows out of paper. I set them by the window not realizing it was open, and they blew away. You don't know what you got til it's gone.
James mercer is the best poet of our generation. And the shins as a whole... Are a gift
Thumbs up for that chill-ass harmonica Interlude. This song is hypnotizing.
I'm loving that harmonica.
Love this song! Its awsome!!
Awesome and incredibly haunting song. Jazzy vocals. The cardboard cows are super cute, super sad, and sort of creepy. Strange how this tune makes me happy and yet smile at the same time. Sort of reminds me of the old tune "Daydream Believer" in this regard. Certainly a throwback to the days of the late 60s.. I love this song and this band. Bring on MORE !!!
Exactly what it me reminds me of. Well said bro
Beautifull song
Loved this song at the end of high school. Now over a decade later i have really felt the feeling of the song when i was young i just felt it romantically
pure beauty!!
My new favorite song.
wow...beautiful
His voice is pure.
this is really, really impressive considering it was all done by one person.
Amazing
Amazing!
SplitNeedles,
This song actually is from Chutes Too Narrow. It is track 7. Take Care!
Beautiful
this video is amazing
i want to give that cow a hug now
Wow.
Who else dares to visit this desolate place?
This video makes me never want to eat a hamburger ever again.
Gonna see The Shins in 2 days! :D
"When our kite lines first crossed
We tied them into knots
And to finally fly apart we had to cut them off"
Some ppl asked me what this harp part was, so I thought I would tab it here... this is just how I would play it on a C harp.. there is more intonation that i leave out.. (draw) notes are in perens...
Think of it as 4 stanza's...
6 (5) (4)
3 4 (4)
(8) (6) (7) 6
(4) 4 3 (5)
*a movie so crass*
And awkwardly cast
*That even I could be the star.*
cool
This album is near perfect but I'd love to hear some new music from them.
Love this song! That's one sad horse though :D
I think they're supposed to be cows or bulls or something not horses.
First few seconds of intro reminds me of the intro to Small Faces Itchygoo Park (1967) anyone remember?
yeah it's great,
know any cool website that teaches more less how to play it. i've got one and don't know how to use it.
Progressive Metal, Neoclassical, and the like. Symphony X, Dream Theater, Nightwish, etc etc.
"I don't look back as much as a rule
And all this way before murder was cool
But your memory is here and I'd like it to stay
Warm light on a winter day."
these guys make some good fuckin music and videos.
Please do not cuss us fans of The Shins out if you don't know the whole story. Thank you.
wow. wow. that's all i can say. :)
Aw, I LOVE cows!
When our kite lines first crossed
We tied them into knots
And to finally fly apart
We had to cut them off.
I wanna give the cow a hug... he looks so sad :S poor guy
Oh, Inverted World....no question about it:)
@Donnnnnnny thats deep man
its such a sad song and the video is dam sad to :( :)
One Tree Hill
„Make A Difference“
This reminds me of a girl i wish i could have back, deep shit bro :-/
cuz the cool like that (=
So fucking trippy.
@osiris0413 I know this is 7 months old, but I just wanted to say I hope you're doing okay.
cows have feelings too...=(
that was really sad for some reason..
This is a hs song for a 35 yr old. Congrats
jujuju did
either thats one hecka good animation or they took years to make this with a camera
The playbacking cow is crazy as hell
the whole sarcastic undertone of my last comment wasnt as clear as it could have been,ie rattling cages, fuffling feathers,we're talking about pop punk fans, not a people of oppressed sexual orientation, transgenders of victims of racism. there is also a subtle difference between 'peace' and pissing off a fall out boy fans
How the hell does his mind conjure up words that encapsulate a feeling so well?
Umm…drugs?
Talent! A true creative.
James is an amazing poet as well as musician. He reminds me of Paul Simon when he was with Art Garfunkel.
Hey dude love your videos!
Such a creative and lovely song writer
I was just bony hands as cold as a winter pole
You held a warm stone out new flowing blood to hold
Oh what a contrast you were
To the brutes in the halls
My timid young fingers held a decent animal.
Over the ramparts you tossed
The scent of your skin and some foreign flowers
Tied to a brick
Sweet as a song
The years have seemed short but the days were long.
Cool of a temperate breeze from dark skies to wet grass
We fell in a field it seems now a thousand summers passed
When our kite lines first crossed
We tied them into knots
And to finally fly apart
We had to cut them off.
Since then it's been a book you read in reverse
So you understand less as the pages turn
Or a movie so crass
And awkwardly cast
That even I could be the star.
I don't look back much as a rule
And all this way before murder was cool
But your memory is here and I'd like it to stay
Warm light on a winter's day.
Over the ramparts you tossed
The scent of your skin and some foreign flowers
Tied to a brick
Sweet as a song
The years have seemed short but the days go slowly by
Two loose kites falling from the sky
Drawn to the ground and an end to flight
The overwhelming feeling of nostalgia, memories of simpler times when we felt more innocent and falling in love was the biggest adventure in the world, and as time passes, the overbearing burdens of life's realities come to the surface to tarnish that hope and innocence until everything is a bittersweet memory. To me, this tune makes me miss myself and my youth and makes me wish I could just remember how it felt like to be so free and open-hearted.
the comment is written so beautifully
🖤
Well said. Also loss. I'm 42 and I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel profound loss. For a myriad of reasons. Hope you are all loved and well.
Yeah
"When the kite lines first crossed
We tied them into knots
To finally fly apart, we had to cut them off"
This perfectly describes what I'm experiencing right now, the aftermath of a relationship I thought and hoped would never end. When something so powerful and meaningful dies, the only way to avoid being taken down with it is to divorce yourself from it completely. To deny or ignore whatever feelings remain. I can only hope in the end that we both learned something, that it wasn't in vain.
This song is just flawless. The lyrics, riffs, tone, the feel, the video, and pretty much everything about it truly amazes me. This band is just so amazing.
that harmonica solo changes lives
dyelday agreed sassy
angstyday right?!?!
look forward to it every time!
effin gorgeous
100 % agreed cuts through the heart
Is it all so very simple
And horribly complex
You're suffering the thimble and there's nothing coming next
The Shins are a band that I can listen to their songs for years, and never totally get it. It takes a bit to pull apart the meanings but once you do, it's amazing.
For example my favorite song by them is Australia, it took me a long while to find the meaning of that one... it refrences to freedom (I feel like I could just fly) while Australia was a prison continent.
it's such a beautiful thing to have a deep feeling, insightful person share these thoughts and feelings with us and through music. what I love most about the shins is Mercer's lyrics.they're so true to human life, never apologetic and sometimes harsh. but so honest. will love this song and the Shins and Broken Bells forever. and my kids will too lol..
Lol what? The lyrics are often times poetic nonsense. I absolutely love the shins, but they really aren't particularly coherent a lot of the time.

thank you!
It seems he relates to his old school days on many of his top songs, like MANY of us, JR HS and HS could be very confusing and troubling times...
Do not watch when tripping on acid. My bad
Why what happened?
If we're talking favorite lines, "Warm light...and a winters day." It's how I always felt when that special someone was sitting there just waiting for the daily hug. Relationships really are about as thin as paper, and it's so easy for these connections to tear, whether it's disease, misery, differences, etc. Treasure the people in your life and love them for who they are now.
I can't get enough of this song. I've listened to it six times already today. It's just so melancholy and pretty... :,)
2020, and I've been reading in reverse and I understand less as a the pages turn.
welcome , it goes downhill from here from what I've learned.
Or a movie so crass and awkwardly cast that even I could be the star!
***** He should expand his video for "Simple Song" into a movie.
Heather Miaou Bruce I know Heather, I know...
+Heather Miaou Bruce From your verbose and cryptic comment, I'm pretty sure what you are saying it that James Mercer's lyrics are great and that everyone should check out OK Go.
Well, yeah, OK Go is great. Their music is decent but their music videos are *UNBELIEVABLE*. My favorites of their music videos are the ones for "Needing/Getting" and "Won't Let You Down". Everybody should see those videos.
And by the way, I've learned that James Mercer actually did play the lead in a movie, Matt McCormick's "Some Days Are Better Than Others". (www.imdb.com/title/tt1328867/) He co-starred with who else but Carrie Brownstein of "Portlandia" fame. Matt McCormick also directed the videos for "The Past And Pending" and "Australia".
he was in a movie though
"Some Days Are Better Than Others"
This song always reminds me of my friend Diane, who lost her fight with breast cancer. Today is her birthday.
G L I hope you and her the best!
What a beautiful dedication. Know that she is always with you. Trying not to cry...
Crying... but it's ok. Sending love.
I'm sorry for your loss
Late on this..but I hope u have found some peace.
I hadn't heard this song in forever, and when the first note came it took my breath away.
lets me remember, and feel the exquisite pain of my mate dying. It was unbareable, but Im still here, out on the other side. He loved this song, too -- the sad, little, paper cows hooked us from the first time we watched the video. How wonderful that it would come to remind me of him so.
2020 still getting strong vibes and feelings out of this masterpiece
Maybe the most beautiful lyrics I’ve ever heard.
This such a moving video. I love the Shins and their Broken Bells CD. They created their own niche and I was on board in '07!!
Some songs have power that exceeds their notes and words. This is one of those songs, but it’s been a while and so I forgot how powerful it was. I’m sitting at work now trying to hide the tears so my coworkers don’t think I’m weird. Well maybe I AM weird, but I know the Shins would understand.
"When our kitelines first crossed, we tied them into knots...to finally fly apart, we had to cut them off"
That's just beautiful.
Hey it's been 14 years, how are you?
@@aelingalathynius9963Good. Don't listen to the shins much anymore though. Did you just find this comment randomly?
@@TheInfamousBertman yeah, there aren't many recent comments and yours was the oldest one I found. 14 years is a really long time and so I felt I should reply; when you commented this I was just 4 lmao. Hope you're doing well!
"Life is like a book, you read in reverse, so you understand less as the pages turn, or a movie so crass and awkwardly cast that even I could be the star"...
Best line of a song ever...
@@aelingalathynius9963 Cute
The Shins are just so relaxing. On a bad day I hit The Shins on my iPod and I'm almost immediately happy. They make awesome, meaningful music that should be more relevant today. It's just peaceful...
I 'discovered' these guys years ago, but only recently started really enjoying them. I didn't know what I was missing. I would almost go so far as to call Chutes Too Narrow a masterpiece.
*Since then it's been a book, you read in reverse.*
Damn.
Mid 2021 and still listen to this song and your memory is still here... and I'd love it to stay
this song evokes so many bittersweet memories 💙
The look in the cow's eyes at 2:21 speaks to my soul.
Man I love this song. It creates feelings in me I didn't know I needed to express. Poignant, sorrowful, but so beautiful.
Oh how life passes by....
Why does the cow have to talk? It sort of ruins the moo-d!
Hernan Goni Buh Dump chhh
HideFromMaster took the words right out of my mouth
Ha
James Mercer's just too intelligent to make a bad song
This reminds me of the time i toured part of Europe with a band and me and this girl musician spent most of our free time together seeing the sites in the various cities we played at. Her name was Morna. She was really shy and had green eyes. We spent the whole tour together and she friendzoned me so hard at the end I thought my heart was going to explode. She went home with one of the vocalists who looked like a young Dave Duchovny that she barely knew. That's just how it goes these days.
Wonder what happened to Morna and where she is now a days.
@@sinceunati I sometimes wonder that tooo. She's probably making Tiktok videos complaining about men and dating.
