- On Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Julianne Moore talks about renting "Ring Of Bright Water" for her young children, as it was a childhood favorite of hers. There is a very upsetting scene near the film's conclusion, however, that the intervening years apparently erased from her memory!
Virginia McKenna was not a bad actress at all.

They were both great actors and a married couple who also did a lovely film together Born free.

I saw this movie when i was a kid too and have adored it for my whole life, apart from that ending. Now I'm starting to discover that there's a lot of other people out there that were quite heavily effected by this film. I've found it here on TH-cam and will be watching it again shortly, it will be interesting to see how it compares to my memories of it now, 50 years later. Contrary to Ms Moore, the only detail I remember from this film is Midge the otter being brutally killed, which is why I haven't showed it to my kids...

You dont actually see a decapitation as she said ' the guy just hit it hard with the shovel. I remember seeing it when I was a kid , and was upset at the ending.
I just rewatched Ring of Bright Water for the first time since i was a small child. Turns out i just re-traumatised myself.
I've traumatized myself several times rewatching it , a great pure film.
Horrible people discussing such a traumatic scene in this manner. Some of the comments in here are very relatable though. I don't remember exactly how old I was when I saw it, but whatever age I was it was too young. I never forgot the sick, horrified feeling of that unexpected scene
Well the very ending of the movie is rather happy, the couple discover a litter of baby otters - and suggests that the two of them adopt them all. So that’s quite nice.
It's a true story. They used to kill them in the highland because they thought they eat a lot of the wild salmon. I think otter killing was banned after this movie. It was a real husband and wife in the movie and after the movie they got in to animal conservation in Afruca. I think he was killed trying to stop elephant poachers in Africa. He was a big actor at the time and he left it all after ring of bright water to look after endangered animals. My favo6movie as a child too.

You are thinking of George Adamson being murdered by poachers, the man Bill Travers played in Born Free. However, you are correct about Travers and McKenna getting involved in animal conservation.
That was my favorite film as a child!!! We had it on VHS as a kid. I just watched it again recently. MIDGE IS THE GREATEST!!!

i watched it as a teenager on late night cable during xmas break….i cried and cried. years later thanks to google i’ve rediscovered it while touring the UK with my kids….I’ll have em watch it before we leave

Great Movie
A perfect example of why I hate late-night talk shows: They take a true-life tragic scene from a beautiful, excellent movie (the kind they don't make anymore) a scene that was truly heartbreaking...
...and they laugh about it and make stupid, tasteless jokes about it, and the brain-damaged audience laughs right along with it. They miss the entire point of it, goes right over the host's empty head, and instead use it as an excuse for cheap laughs.
I'm glad I don't watch TV anymore.

That one scene ruined the.film for me, to the extent that I can never enjoy it despite its other qualities.
@@davegreene8588 Well, in the story the otter was killed (as in the real-life story depicted in the film), but they didn't actually slaughter the thing on-screen or anything. This isn't a 'snuff' film, in other words.

growing up in england things were harsh for kids. watership down was released as a u certificate in the 70,s and thats 1 harsh film. ring of bright water and watership down and possibly plague dogs were very harsh films that dealt with death but were aimed at small kids, weird.

The movie took a lot of liberties that were not in the book.
The book (the first in a trilogy) is wonderful, and a bit different from the movie. This documentary/re-enactment/ docudrama shows the true story a bit better, although the production values aren't great and it's best watched at 1.25 speed: th-cam.com/video/ppAawATjDM4/w-d-xo.html (but better to read the books!)
