Fingerless Mittens: Absolute Beginner Knitting Project

- This is a super easy beginner knitting project. These fingerless mittens uses only knit and purl stitches, knitted flat with just one seam and no thumb gusset. They will knit up super fast making a great last minute gift, just in time for winter or Christmas!! The free knit pattern is included below.

For these mittens I used a worsted weight yarn and size US 6 straight needle.
Fingerless Mittens Pattern:
Cast on 32 stitches (note: leave an extra long tail for the seam)
Row 1: K3, (P1, K4) repeat within ( ) to last 4 stitches, P1, K3
Row 2: (P2, K3) repeat within ( ) to last 2 stitches, P2
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 7.5 inches, ending with Row
Bind off, leaving a bit of a tail
Using the tail from the cast on edge, and with right sides together seam up the side for about 4.5 inches. With the tail from the bind off, seam the edges from the top down for about 1.75 inches, leaving a gap for the thumb hole. Secure the last stitches of your seam and weave in the ends.

Yes one skein of yarn will be enough. It doesn't take much yarn at all for these.
Hi there! Did you make a slipknot in the beginning? Also for the 6 needle are you using the exact size yarn you’d usually need for a 6? Hope that makes sense lol i am a beginner 😂 So excited to try this!! ❤
Hello and thanks for the questions. When I cast on I do not start with a slip knot. I find that just creates a bulky knot at the start of your cast on that isn't necessary. Rather the first wrap of the yarn over the needle creates that first stitch. For more instructions on casting on you can refer to my video here: th-cam.com/video/YaP6i22sByE/w-d-xo.html
As for the yarn and needle, I'm using a worsted weight yarn (usually identified with a "4" on the package for this weight of yarn). You would normally use about a size 7 or 8 needle for that weight but because I want the mitten to be a bit more dense and warmer for when complete I went down a couple needle sizes to a size 6. That makes for a tighter knitted mitten and give it a bit more warmth. Hope that answers your questions. Have fun.

This is a great first pattern project that I've done after just doing squares etc for blankets. Just wondering how many stitches I'd need if I needed to make a larger size. I like the length but just need to fit a larger hand. Would I add in 5 increments?
Thanks for reaching out. You are exactly right. Just increase your number of stitches by 5. For this stitch you want to cast on a multiple of 5 plus 2. I would start with trying 37 stitches casted on and see how that feels.

Hello and thanks for reaching out. Since these mittens are knitted flat and then simply seamed together the piece is just basically a rectangle size finished piece. So you could incorporate any two color fair isle pattern. (Or any stitch) you choose to produce a rectangle finish size. You would just want to make sure the size of the finished rectangle is wide enough to fit snuggly around your hand and tall enough to reach just below your pinky. Then seam up the sides leaving a gap for the thumb. Hope that helps. Have fun with it and I’m sure you’ll create something beautiful and uniquely yours.

Yes you would simply cast on more stitches and knit for more rows to make for a larger rectangle. When casting on for this stitch you would need to cast on a multiple of 5 stitches plus 2. Good luck!

Wanting to make a pair with circular needles. Having trouble finding a free pattern and video for beginners. Not sure on what yarn to use. I have a lot of Red Heart but not sure it that’s a good yarn for this. For a gift not for myself. Want something soft not itchy. Please help if you can. ❤😅
Hello. I'm actually designing right now a fingerless mitten pattern that uses a circular needle and the magic loop method. Since a mitten is a pretty small circumference you would need a pretty small circular needle to knit in the round, or you would need double pointed needles. The magic loop is a good alternative for this. I will have a video on the magic loop method going live on Nov. 19 (th-cam.com/video/q6CDoOtgOfM/w-d-xo.html) or there are a lot of videos out there showing the magic loop. My fingerless mitten pattern and video won't be available for a several weeks. If you provide me your email address I can send you the pattern as an early sneak peak if you'd like. Raverly.com also has many patterns that might work for you as well. As far as yarn goes, I'm not a big fan of the Red Heart yarn. It is too scratchy for me. Lion Brand and Hobby Lobby Brand has lots of good acrylic yarns that are nice and soft that make great mittens. Hello! I’m using thick fluffy yarn with size 10 needles- I’m starting out and thought it would be easier- is it still okay to make this project? Will I have to do less cast on stitches?
Yes, absolutely you still can. But yes you will need less cast on stitches. It may take a little trial and error to find what you need to cast on. Try knitting a small rectangle swatch noting number of stitches and see if it fits snuggly around your wrists when folded in half. If too loose cast on less stitches. If too tight cast on more.

You are welcome. You know I didn’t really calculate the amount of yarn but it is not a lot. A small skein or about 150 yards should be plenty.
Does anyone know how many stitches to use for 7yr?
If you want to knit a smaller pair reduce the amount of cast on stitches by 5. So you can try first a cast on of 27 and then 22 to see which would fit the best.
Could we pick up stitches, to add a part of the thumb, at this point ? In this pattern ?
That may work. Usually for a thumb you are creating first a thumb gusset which are a series of increase stitches to make room for the base of your thumb so if you just pick up stitches for the thumb it may not fit great. That is an excellent idea. I have not yet created a pattern for fingered gloves or half fingers gloves. I can only give tutorials on my own created patterns. I will have to put that on my list of ideas to develop in the future. Thank you for the suggestion.
